If anyone is watching this 2 years later, it is definitely still worth it. Nvidia has been so good about updates. I'm using the 2017 model. As far as I know, the 2015 model still gets updates. Who else updates something for 8 years?

Killing it on the quality videos. Nice work. Also, one of the huge upsides to the Nvidia Shield (Reg or Pro) is its game streaming (particularly if you have an Nvidia GPU in your main rig).
I've had a shield for a few years now and I'm continually impressed and impressing my friends. I even learned a few new things from this excellent, well produced and informative review. I look FWD to all your videos. Ignore the naysayers, Russ.
I got the Nvidia Shield TV when it first came out back in 2015. I use it for everything from streaming TV shows, Playing android games, Streaming PC games. However it was the emulation capabilities that sold me on this machine back then and in my opinion it is still the best Android TV box you can buy

Android TV box gold standard, sure. But Any decent Android phone is going to perform better. I like mine and the A.I. upscaling is nice. I think I went into it with too high of hopes for GameCube emulation though.
It's hard to agree with that, considering a high-end phone like Galaxy S20 or S21 can run Gamecube games at 1080p with no issues, PSP games at 10x resolution and Wii games at full speed..
It's 6 years old tech. It's lasted the course. Of course phones have overtaken. It's 6 years old. And one sixth of the price of a latest phone. As a streaming unit, it's great, feels quick enough. Does emulation up to psp and Dreamcast. I'd love a update version. But I couldn't be ass'd waiting. So got a 6core i5 mini pc for 200 bucks. Now I flip between them. Pc for newer emulation, shield for steaming and the rest
I have 3 of these... I bought one in 2017, before amazon was available in Australia. It came with a US power pack, which i still run off a travel adapter. I bought another one later when amazon finally launched in australia, and then bought the 2019 pro when it released. Still the best box to have plugged into your tv, 6 years after I first bought one. Nice video - found it while looking for some emulation tips.
I know this comment is a year old. But the AI upscaling on this device is extremely impressive. I had the device for a while but didn't have a 4K tv until recently. I finally hooked it up recently and was blown away by the AI upscaling when watching 1080p content on the 4K tv
Thanks for doing this video. I've never actually seem one of these in action so it's a real help! I ended up buying a small Lenovo PC (M93P Tiny) which I installed Batocera on, and it's a treat! For me it's better than the Shield as it can run GameCube no problem. Only caveat is setting your emulation to run at 720p. 1080p is just too much for it sadly, but at 720p it's absolutely awesome, and for the price I paid (£100 with a 250gb Samsung SSD) a complete bargain. Now, back to F-Zero GX!

It's a solid device even if I do just use it as a moonlight streaming machine. I use mine all the time. Still, we could really do with a chipset refresh!
Does it have too much controller delay on Bluetooth? I tried moonlight on android TV devices and it always has some 50ms delay, meanwhile moonlight on a small PC has almost zero controller delay. I want to buy a shield pro for moonlight mostly buy I can't find the answer to my question.
I got a galaxy note 8 that screen got damaged. I'm gonna get a typeC usb hub with hdmi and make it into an android tv box. Its powerful so itll be great.
@@LizardDean In my experience the console controllers over Bluetooth does feel a bit laggy. The native Shield controller feels best, followed by Xbox controllers, DS4 feels terrible on most things, but oddly works really well in Steam Link.
I've got two pro's. An older model that's in the kitchen and the newer model that is now in the living room. Gamming wise I use them to stream games from my PC. They are brilliant devices and the upscaling on the new pro model is brilliant bonus.
There’s several important emulators that don’t have a 32bit version which to me is far more important than the onboard storage or ports of the smaller shield
Another bit that may be important for emulation on the Shield TV vs the Shield TV Pro, is the Shield TV (Tube) is only 32bit Android where the Shield TV Pro (And all past Shield TV/PRO's from 2015/2017) are 64Bit Android. And the only Shield TV That has a onboard HDD is the original Shield TV Pro from 2015. However the best thing to do with that model is to replace the onboard 500G HDD with a 500G SSD which greatly improves performance and completely fixes any slowdown that often seemed to happen with the original Pro. Updates that used to take over an hour now take minutes with the SSD, and overall it continues to be an absolutely fantastic TV Box that my family uses daily.
is emulation better on the Nvidia Shield now? Im thinking about getting one. I know each year companies typically update and improve their yearly models.

I originally got an nVidia Shield TV for the purpose of playing videos & music from my PC over the KODI app, which allows access to shared folders off of your PC through the network. KODI is probably the best app on an nVidia Shield for playing your own media & also has it's own emulator plugins, so I play most older emulators through the KODI app by accessing them from shared directories from my PC. Not all ROMs will work flawlessly with KODI, but the majority that I've tried work without any problems at all. Additionally, you can use bluetooth gamepads, which works with very little response latency if you are playing realtime games on the nVidia Shield itself, however it's better to use an input device connected to the PC itself if you are streaming from the PC to the Shield (as I've found with the Steam Link app); an additional note regarding the Steam Link app is that if you are using a keyboard/mouse that is connected to the PC (like a bluetooth or wired keyboard/mouse) rather than connected through the nVidia Shield TV, it not only reduces (or eliminates) input lag, it even allows you to FULLY remote access your PC through the Shield (some keys on the keyboard will function differently when connected to the Shield & not allow full PC functionality if not connected directly to the PC). So it's not technically necessary to have the games on the device itself, provided you are using an app that has network functionality (like KODI), nor is it necessary to attach a USB drive or insert an SDMicro card to use those games on the Shield, even transferring through the network is possible with other downloadable apps (like Network Browser) if you simply need to transfer the game to the Shield prior to using it (as I've found is the case in KODI when you are attempting to mount disc images, not being able to mount them in ISO format).
I have the old school Nvidia Shield, the first model they put out. I have the Pro model of that which came with an internal 500 GB hard drive. I've loved the thing. I mostly got it because it was capable of playing back all my really high quality media, which the Raspberry Pi Kodi setup I had been using up till then just couldn't. The emulation performance was just a plus for me. I also like it for the Nvidia Gamestream, and the Shield was the only option for a while till the Moonlight project came along.

I love my Shield and it's a joy that I can enjoy Dreamcast, a console that I've never had back in the days... But at the same time got me a little sad that GCN is the hit and miss point... (I didn't owned that one either so I have a huge backlog there). I have my SD 865 phone for that I guess...
Great video as usual mate,I have the 1st ever shield they made still working well today also came with 2 USB ports and an SD card slot. only use mine for streaming altho I should use it for emulation but I use a Pi 4 for that.
I have the 2015 Nvidia shield tv, and it has been great. That said, we are way over due for new generation instead of a refresh. I think I would like a mini PC if I could figure out a way to switch it on while my butt stays on the couch.
While Snes9X will run special chip games like Star Fox at full speed 60fps, cycle grade emulators like bsnes and Messen-S will run Star Fox at about 40-50fps with audio issues on the Nvidia Shield Pro. Not a big deal but worth pointing out.
I really love my envidia shield TV, I have the 2015 version of it. Would buy another if they come up with another one with an up to date processor for ps2 emulation.
I've been emulating on the Nvidia Shield (2017) edition, and I have not had any problems. Finding the best front-end has always been the stocking point with my Shield. But now that the LaunchBox front-end has returned to Android, my experience will be much better.
I always have problems with not having specific romsets for front ends, Retroarch etc. They end up not being found, or thumbnails not working etc. I gave up with making my collections look nice in the end How do you approach all this?
@@DuckAlertBeats The ROM sets I always use are the ones labeled "No Intro", and they can be found on numerous web sites. I've used them for years with builds on my Shield and other Android devices, my oDroid XU4, Raspberry Pi's, and my PC LaunchBox and Batocera set-ups. Those ROM sets scrape very easily with very few misses.
I love the Nvidia Shield TV! I got it for free when I signed up for an internet plan thru Google Fiber back in 2018. I couldn't believe it! I love to play Steam games and the emulation as described in this video runs pretty well.
As someone who got in on the Shield TV when it was new, it's kinda sad that it's still arguably the best in the game as a dedicated emulator box for the tv.
I’ve had a Shield TV Pro since the refresh and shockingly I only just recently tried out GeForce Now and I am blown away. I focused my shield gaming sights on retro emulation since I brought it home and I’ve been very pleased. But connecting a keyboard and mouse and playing games from my limited Steam library (I haven’t had an actual PC since like ‘07) with the 3080 tier GeForce Now on my 4K panel has been nothing short of stellar.

@@YAHWEHBENEVOLENCIA the Shield TV Pro is still a great android tv box and will handle all of those legacy consoles and ROMs fantastically. You will want the PRO version, as it has USB ports necessary for additional storage. Now, it's worth noting that your list of intended consoles to emulate do NOT require much power, so even cheaper options may do fine for your uses. And there are of course newer similar android tv boxes that can also function this way. I still really like my Shield TV Pro. The only other boxes we have currently are some Chromecast Google TV ones, which aren't bad but they aren't as feature-rich as the Shield. Hope that helps!
@@YAHWEHBENEVOLENCIA OH! and I recommend and use Retroarch when it comes to most emulation. Do some reading about it if you've never heard. It can be a little confusing at first but it's well worth the dive to set it up properly as it makes retro emulation SO accessible nowadays. also check out things like "bandit's no clutter collection" which is occasionally still available from P2P sources.
What sucks is that before the GPU insanity you used to be able to get a SFF Optiplex and a LP 1050ti for around $200 on the used market. That would have made an interesting challenger.
LIST OF SYSTEMS THAT THE NVIDIA SHIELD PRO CAN OR SHOULD BE ABLE TO RUN THROUGH EMULATION :
HOME CONSOLES Atari 2600 Magnavox Odyssey 2 Intellivision ColecoVision Atari 5200 Vectrex Sega SG-1000 NES/Family Computer (Famicom) Sega Mark III/Sega Master System Family Computer Disk System Atari 7800 PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 Sega Genesis/Mega Drive TurboGrafx-CD PC Engine2/SuperGrafx Neo-Geo AES Super NES/Super Famicom Commodore 64 Sega CD/Mega CD 3DO Atari Jaguar Neo-Geo CD Sega 32X Sega Saturn Sony PlayStation Nintendo 64 Dreamcast PlayStation 2 Nintendo GameCube Wii (I personally have zero interest for this Wii, so others will be more qualified than me on this subject, but according to the results of a basic research, it seems that maybe 40 to 50% of the games should run with full or near full FPS, especially if it is a 2D game...) HANDHELDS Game Boy Game Boy Colors Atari Lynx Sega Game Gear Neo Geo Pocket WonderSwan Game Boy Advance Nintendo DS PlayStation Portable (PSP) Nintendo 3DS (only a portion of the 3DS catalog will run, and not always very well; but it would certainly be possible to make a decent playlist of playable titles for one's NS Pro) ARCADE 99% of the games released before, and including, Capcom CPS3 (1996 I think?). And quite a lot that were released after that too. It also includes, obviously, ALL Neo Geo titles. This category covers SO MANY games, from the past 50 years, so... But in my opinion, almost everything people have in mind, when it comes to the pinnacle of arcades games, will play perfectly. Even harder to emulate games, such as SF: The Movie (if anyone cares lol :P), do work perfectly. The one exception, for me at least, is Killer Instinct, but I am actually working on it and believes that it could be playable.
Really hoping they come out with an updated model that has 8 GB of RAM instead of 3, and all around better support for certain codecs, acceleration, better cpu on the SoC, slightly more GPU cores, etc. We are due for a refresh already.
@@RetroGameCorps I think its sad there isn't any competition in this market (high-end AndroidTV Boxes), so Nvidia have really been dragging their heels in either the performance or the price (or both). I feel like the Shield TV Pro should be a solid USD $99 price since ages ago (max 2019 ?). What do you think? Here is my reasoning: Because at the $200 price-point you could get a Used, Refurbished, or even New Console. Such as the Xbox One S, or even the Xbox One X. Both pretty competent consoles compared to the Shield TV, and they support all the same Streaming Apps. And if you use Dev-Mode, you can use RetroArch on these and the performance is slightly better than the Nvidia ShieldTV Pro. Two limitations, first no Android Apps/sideloading. Second being that it will require a weekend to tweak everything so that it is setup, and you can get Dev-Mode sometimes free, other times from Discord channels, or might have to pay a little bit of money, but it seems worth it. Again, you can pick up these consoles for very cheap, and lots and lots of games also cheap, whilst it doubles as a Media Box. So instead of an Nvidia ShieldTV, it seems more "value for money" to recommend an Xbox One S or Xbox One X. Also a PS4 or PS4 Pro seem great, competing for the space in your TV Cabinet, albeit not quiet as "direct competitors". The real value proposition is the Xbox series S. At only USD $300, it's got more hardware than any PC you can buy for the same price. With the new Browser, and Dev-Mode, it is shockingly flexible. Not to mention it supports Xbox, 360, and One games superbly. It's also an emulation power-house. All of that for just a $100 more is a no-brainer. Skip the Nvidia Shield, grab the Xbox S-S instead, and have ability to play all new AAA-games for the next 5 years. And its a Media Box too. Really the Shield is poor value for money in comparison. If the top-end ShieldTV Pro was RRP priced at only USD $99, then there would be an argument to be made. That's my opinion, what do you think?
@@ekinteko Xbox Series S is not gonna be able to play AAA games for 5 years, at least not with the same content as X. Games have to be trimmed and downgraded to fit on S. A newer version of S will be out in a year or two. The rest is pretty true.
@@valentineli305 Well, that's not true. The Xbox Series S, has enough SSD, RAM, and CPU performance to power the same AAA-Games as the PS5 and XSX. The main difference is the big (x3) difference in GPU hardware. And that is fine. Games can scale things like resolution fairly easily. And that makes sense for their strategy (replace/phase out Xbox One/S/X out as fast as possible). The XSX has been designed as a 2160p/60fps machine for most of its lifecycle and games. Which is minimum until 2025, but more likely to be relevant until 2030. The XSS will be similar, but actually a little better performance. The caveat being that games will be a 1080p/60fps experience instead.
You forgot the two other reasons why the Nvidia Shield TV Pro is the best when it comes to Android TV Boxes. Exclusive optimized GFN support and the AI video upscaler. That is what gives us the very best 4K video support on this thing for common video streaming apps. I just wish Nvidia had included a video app that could use it for local videos. I hope Nvidia releases a new one with a good bump of performance. It being able to do gc, Wii and 3ds would be a huge deal.
@@SoukaDeezNutz Well, yes. That is the only way to use their AI Upscaler right now. There is a video app coming that will let you do something similar for locally stored videos. But it will be a paid app and who knows how much it will cost. So, hopefully Nvidia will release a new version of the Nvidia Shield this year that let you do that.
My thing is, I have an Nvidia Shield TV Pro and a 5TB HDD. However, due to how ironclad the Nvidia Shield TV Pro is, when I install Retroarch, it WILL NOT LET ME ADD FILES TO THE SYSTEM FOLDER FOR RETROARCH due to it being in the Shield TV Pro's internal folders. This means no Ninja Baseball Batman, no Playstation Emulators, no Neo-Geo, no nothin'. How the hell do you get access into the Shield TV Internal folders?
Hi, just make a new system folder somewhere else (like on your HDD) and then go into Settings > Directory and change the system directory to the new system folder you created. Then save your current configuration file in the Main Menu, and it'll now look in there for your bios files.
The shield is absolutely worth the money. It's very flexible, you can do a lot of different types of things on it. I've had mine since 2018 and never worried about the gaming aspects of it. Mostly use it for plex, streaming, movies in general...... Decided to grab a controller and take it to the next level though so I'm about to unlock its gaming potential and steam link and all kinds of great stuff. I still haven't even done a home security system set up on it but I have investigated how to and it would be glorious if I chose to pull that trigger. The right software for that is already in the Play Store, it's up to me when I want to add a few cameras around my property and get that going. Being in a small town there's not a huge need to do that though but perhaps one day. I completely disagree with the devices you claim are its main competition. It stands alone in it's category and doesn't really have good competition. All of those alternative devices are cheap Chinese boxes that are junk. Not officially supported, don't get updates, not nearly reliable long-term like The Shield is.
had the pro for like 6 years and never really thought of using it for emulation . and the restricted google play store was kind of annoying ... but I think I'll set it up as an emulation powerhouse because it seems amazing,
Good video, keep going! I got the 1st version of shield from 2015 and I’m loving it from the 1st day and now will make it useful for my nephews and my daughter. Thank you
I have the original NVIDIA Shield and it has more than paid for itself in terms of the usage it gets in my household from media streaming and gaming. I have my old home movies on a usb thumb drive attached for easy viewing as well. I honestly use it more for video playback than gaming but it is a great value especially since it comes with a dedicated gaming controller that feels comfortable and constantly gets updates from NVIDIA to optimize the experience. Unlike Android phones that lose support after a few years, this device remains viable. It doesn't get yearly hardware revisions so you can feel comfortable that it will last you a good while too.
Thanks for making this. Crazy how one of the better tv emulators can just barely manage the performance of a handheld that was released in 2001? GameCube und Xbox also feel long overdue. 🤷🏻♂️
Watching this in 2024 because I'm considering turning my Shield into an emulation machine and the references to Stadia made me sad because I was one of the few who absolutely loved that service.
I have this machine and I’ve spent a lot of time with it, I still can’t get it to play the games like you showed before. To be honest I was doubting about selling it and buying an Xbox series S. But I think the media streaming is gold
I wish Nvidia had stronger competition, so they'd come with a proper hardware revision every once in a while. I'll buy one of these for the living room instantly once GC plays flawlessly.
@@westleyjohnstone4719 yes, I'm waiting for the next generation AMD apu with rdna graphics, so I can emulate everything out there with ease + some upscaling.
i think it's also the fact that emulation is an edge case that nvidia doesn't need to cater for. for most people this is going to be for video and game streaming and the processor is still perfectly fine for that.
@@ChrisHaupt I think it's a missed opportunity. Emulation maybe was a niche, but since the start of retropie the retro gaming scene has really exploded. If you want a media box, for most people a cheap android box with netflix license will do, such as the Amazon sticks or the Xiaomi mi box. The added value of the shield for me is its gaming capabilities, which I think should be upgraded over time. Also from a business point of view, Nvidia should convince their customers at some point that it's time to upgrade. If you bought a shield in 2015, you still have no need for a new shield. I just don't get it.
@@gvanderlee2703 good point on the upgrade thing, i normanly get a upgrade bug, but saw no point going from my 500gb 2015 model. My mini pc does my emulation needs with a front end. I got a haswell SFF desktop PC (HP) with i5-4590 and 4gb ram, 128gb ssd for $20. Best emulation station for $20 (actually $10 more for the DP to HDMI cable and needed to supply my own power cord) even run PS2 games. Now just hunting for some cheap used Xbox controllers.
@@RetroGameCorps I'd assume Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition is harder to run. Do know it was a port of the version on PS2 and Xbox. But I think L.A. was the one people liked more.
I used to use retroarch on the shield in the past but trying to get more into it. I put my retroarch rom library from my PC onto a USB drive to use on the shield but retroarch doesn't see the USB drive. I see posts online that android 11/13 changed file access and that you need to change the config file so that retroarch can read from the USB. I followed x-plore guides but when trying to get into the file I need to accept a permission for the drive through the x-plore menu. When I try, I can see the name of the drive and an eject button but it's not selectable. Any ideas how to get this working in 2024?
I hate that they still use a proprietary wall wart power supply and still don’t sell replacements. When these weren’t as popular, you’d typically see them go for $60, up to like $100 used. The tiny version of the remote was always lost, out of battery, or both and I’m glad to see they’ve changed it to something more substantial. I haven’t seen mine in years, and just navigate with a gamepad or the TV remote via HDMI control. Android TV has been hit or miss over the years but Nvidia has done a good job making sure my many years old box hasn’t been left behind and the current iteration seems to be as good as it’s ever been. The Nvidia remote play component is extremely impressive. On a wired connection, I can stream a rhythm game like Crypt of the Necrodancer and not perceive any latency. Given that it’s trying to tie to together Android, Windows, Steam, etc. architectures, weird things can happen when launching or closing games. Things like Origin games can be really problematic, others just don’t work at all. It can be really frustrating and it’s just not going to replace the convenience and ease of playing a console on the couch. If you’re up for tinkering and troubleshooting, the idiosyncrasies of pushing things in ways they were never really meant to function, there are about a thousand ways this thing will impress the heck out of you. But this is very much the same company that made you create an account to use their video card driver update manager, just to log you out every month or so so that you could log in with a CAPTCHA to train their self-driving car algorithms.
Hey Russ, could I use the Shield along with the Kinhank portable HDD drive? I was thinking of doing a setup like that or a laptop. Seems like this will be cheaper, but I'm thinking the Drive would work better with a Laptop or a Mini desktop.
I use pro for everything. I bought my mother one too so she could cut out shaw cable and installed Kodi tv for her so she can watch anything she can think of
I did emulation on the shield and my only complaint was that the bluetooth was not the best. Wireless controllers often lagged or momentarily dropped out. YMMV, but you might be better off with wired controllers on the shield.
Good review. Personally I hate the 2019 revisions' names. The tube should've been called the Shield TV Lite since that's exactly what it is. The "Pro" should've just been called the standard Shield TV just like it used to, while the Pro name should've been retired. To me, only the one with the internal SATA drive can be called the "Pro".
It's really interesting that this device from 2014 is still considered among the top of its class. Your Shield Pro is updated to 2021 but old owners can tell you it hasn't been upgraded that much. They probably got the most out of it because they even got to play PS360 games ported natively to it, that storefront has been shut down since
@@goeland4585 LOL yes, I mean games that came out in the 7th generation of consoles, on PS3 or 360 or both. Some of the games that were sold on the Shield include Metal Gear Rising Revengeance and Doom 3.
Great vid, but to clarify, I have 4 yr old shield, has HDMI, and 2 USB ports, but no micro SD, I used 2 128gb USB sticks for content, it is an amazing device, for the price, Since moved to xbox1s for daily use. But you have inspired me, to start fresh, and mount it to the back, of found free, flat screen tv,( 27 Max,) and just dedicate it, with both storage drives to be just emulator s for what you have shown works best on this I have the Xbox like wireless shield controller,so will be cool, then I'll find someone to give it away to, thanks for your vids.
It's also probably the best living room solution for GeForce Now, which I used (on a low spec PC) for the GOG version of Cyberpunk and had a great 80 hours with it after I steered clear of the PS4 version. :P
Now with the steam link of the shield and the Retroarch included in steam there are fewer limitations (there are still a lot of cores missing on the retroarch steam but new ones arrive regularly)
One question, how you would compare it with an xbox series S (considering the +100 but that it has the controller, not the fact that plays... xbox games)
Xbox emulation is much better, especially if Wii or GameCube are important to you, or crisp 1080p PSP for everything but God of War (that game is such a pain!). But the user interface is very RetroArch-dependent, and even with the most tuned-in tweaks the UI experience is not as nice as the NVIDIA Shield. So if you don't have a controller already, and GameCube/Wii are must-haves, and you don't mind getting in the weeds with RetroArch, then it might be worth the extra $100 to go with the Xbox.
We have two hooked to our main TV's. One original 2015 pro started acting up after the latest update was pushed and was un-usable. Everything I read pointed to the 512GB hard drive dying. Seemed like too much of a coincidence with the patch just being pushed. But, I thought I'd play around with it and replaced the hard drive with a 512GB SSD. I cloned the original drive to the SSD, cleaned out all the dust inside, and replaced the thermal compound. It runs amazing now. I'd say faster than when it was new. Highly recommended mod.
How can you connect the HDD to your PC? Isn't it using some non-sata connectors? And how do you burn the image to make sure the device boots normally? I also have the OG 500GB Pro model. Now I'm worried to update the OS.
@@valentineli305 Basically, I searched TH-cam on videos about "Nvidia Shield SSD replacement" and watched several. The shield drive attaches with a proprietary SATA adapter. But, the drive is a standard Seagate SATA hybrid drive. I said 512GB, as you said it's actually 500GB. The SSD needs to be the same size for a straight clone. Although, I gather it is possible to go larger with some editing skills. There is a cloning utility mentioned in these videos which I did not use. I have a docking station that has a stand-alone cloning capability (Inateck SA02003). I used a "Samsung SSD 870 EVO" as the replacement. But, I've seen many different 500GB SSDs that would work. It was a pretty easy mod if you're comfortable working with PC hardware. A note of caution. Ribbon cables and wires are taped and glued. They are easy to remove as long as you are aware and don't just start pulling on things. Also, be aware the ribbon cable latches need to be released. In one of the videos, they just pulled it out of the connector without releasing the latch. In the end, it was a fun project.

I bought the PRO based on this recommendation and it has been quite a headache trying to get it set up. ATS Launcher Pro doesn't work because it says widgets aren't supported by the box, and I let the Shield format my external hard drive to use it as storage but now my PC won't recognize the drive. I can tell the box is of a high quality, but so far not a single feature is working as I expected.
You don't have to set up your shield pro exactly like the reviewer did. You don't have to use the ATS launcher. Just download the individual emulators from the play store, and run them separately. I got a 128gb USB, formatted it on my pc first (NTFS or Fat32), and then put all roms in separate folders and plugged it in the shield. Finally, you don't have to run your games at 1080p, 720p (or the emulators default graphics settings) will work ok too.
Thanks for the tips. I'm mostly up and running. I didn't realize that the Shield has two options for formatting the external drive, one of them leaves the drive accessible by PC and the other does not. I had to reset the box and start over to get the launcher to work properly and to get apps to sideload. Now it's just a matter of tweaking individual emulators for optimal performance.
I connected a Kingston disk on key then I formatted it and it took a lot of time and still not finished I removed it from the streamer during the formatting and still a message appeared that he formatted then I removed the streamer from the power and everything is fine now it is not terrible I removed the power while the streamer was running?
If anyone is watching this 2 years later, it is definitely still worth it. Nvidia has been so good about updates. I'm using the 2017 model. As far as I know, the 2015 model still gets updates. Who else updates something for 8 years?

Shield has been the gold standard in android emulation for a while now…primarily due to community support.
And the lack of real competition. The other boxes do Dreamcast at best.
I was thinking about getting a similar mini pc running batocera or retropie, or the shield option

Yeah I was surprised too! It's super good.
This needs a updated look
is emulation better on the Nvidia Shield now? Im thinking about getting one. I know each year companies typically update and improve their yearly models.
I've been using a shield for about 4 years now and it's been perfect. I use arc browser as a front end and it's been great

Amazingly thorough and well thought out video. Best one I could find concerning this topic. Quality content, thumbs up :D
Now I got another best retro games channel. Love you mate ❤️ coz of you I’m able to play all my childhood games on my ipad

I think its sad there isn't any competition in this market (high-end AndroidTV Boxes), so Nvidia have really been dragging their heels in either the performance or the price (or both).
I feel like the Shield TV Pro should be a solid USD $99 price since ages ago (max 2019 ?). What do you think?
Here is my reasoning:
Because at the $200 price-point you could get a Used, Refurbished, or even New Console.
@@valentineli305
Well, that's not true.
Yo. It's got You Tube. I don't know what OTHER local videos you are talking about. LoL.
@@itsyeeoledskoolfurry3208 I meant that it is a shame Nvidia don't provides an app that let's you use their AI upscaler with your own videos.
@@AlexDiaz-gw5ov Huh. Cool Okay. =o)
@Alex Diaz Would uploading your videos to TH-cam and watching them from there work?
Unless they're the naughty kind of videos.
Planning to get me an Nvidia Shield Pro for my TV to play some retro games 😀
Good stuff as always Russ.
Not officially supported, don't get updates, not nearly reliable long-term like The Shield is.
had the pro for like 6 years and never really thought of using it for emulation . and the restricted google play store was kind of annoying ... but I think I'll set it up as an emulation powerhouse because it seems amazing,
Sideload and install apk from your nas or usb or whatever media you have connected
@@RIMHQ-YT cheers man thanks for the advice got my main pc set up as a server so i'll use that 👍👍
Good video, keep going!
The level of support for this device is very impressive!
Thanks for making this. Crazy how one of the better tv emulators can just barely manage the performance of a handheld that was released in 2001? GameCube und Xbox also feel long overdue. 🤷🏻♂️
This was an amazing video. Thanks
I've had mine for years. I love it.
Reset Collection is awesome. Super easy to add your own artwork
It really is!
The remote is the best thing about the shield. I love it. I miss it.
Muchas gracias, fantástica review. :)
Thanks Alfonso :)
So crazy I wanted to see if I could play Killer Instinct on the shield before I buy it. Kept watching your vid, and nope lol. Thank you for the vid!🤘🤘
I wish Nvidia had stronger competition, so they'd come with a proper hardware revision every once in a while. I'll buy one of these for the living room instantly once GC plays flawlessly.
I went down the mini pc route to get just that. Shield is 6 years old, not often you get tech and get 6 years of solid updates
Saying that for streaming from my main pc, the odd bit of geforce now, streaming from my nas box and youtube etc, i still use my shield
That's quite a deal! I would expect to pay at least $100 for that setup, so $20 is crazy.
If you really got it for 20 bucks you got an absolute steal.
For PSP in the future can you test the Midnight club games? They are a good benchmark and fan favorite
I can certainly try to add it to the rotation. Which one is preferred for testing and demonstration?
@@RetroGameCorps I'd assume Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition is harder to run. Do know it was a port of the version on PS2 and Xbox.
But I think L.A. was the one people liked more.
The one I have been waiting for
I used to use retroarch on the shield in the past but trying to get more into it.
I've connected my NAS over SMB to the Shield and i play all my ROMs from there. Also tried out Reset anf the other frontends, it's really worth it.
Sounds like a nice setup!
I'd be really interested to know if this can output either 240p and/or 480i over the HDMI, I could totally see this being my CRT emulator
It's really interesting that this device from 2014 is still considered among the top of its class.
Your Shield Pro is updated to 2021 but old owners can tell you it hasn't been upgraded that much. They probably got the most out of it because they even got to play PS360 games ported natively to it, that storefront has been shut down since
Hmm ps360? Playstation 360? Wut
@@goeland4585 LOL yes, I mean games that came out in the 7th generation of consoles, on PS3 or 360 or both.
Some of the games that were sold on the Shield include Metal Gear Rising Revengeance and Doom 3.

NVidia shield is my go-to for video streaming- it’s the only box compatible with disc-based Dolby atmos. Psyched to try out Saturn games!
Great vid, but to clarify, I have 4 yr old shield, has HDMI, and 2 USB ports, but no micro SD, I used 2 128gb USB sticks for content, it is an amazing device, for the price, Since moved to xbox1s for daily use. But you have inspired me, to start fresh, and mount it to the back, of found free, flat screen tv,( 27 Max,) and just dedicate it, with both storage drives to be just emulator s for what you have shown works best on this I have the Xbox like wireless shield controller,so will be cool, then I'll find someone to give it away to,
thanks for your vids.
I hope one of these appeared out of nowhere in my room x.x I really want one! For family game night
It's also probably the best living room solution for GeForce Now, which I used (on a low spec PC) for the GOG version of Cyberpunk and had a great 80 hours with it after I steered clear of the PS4 version. :P
Now with the steam link of the shield and the Retroarch included in steam there are fewer limitations (there are still a lot of cores missing on the retroarch steam but new ones arrive regularly)
plz check if the samsung fridge can run emulation. It can pretty much run doom though
Hello. Could you please update your experience with this device?
What controllers do you use for N64? My issue, I can’t find an N64 controller that works in Shield.
RetroFighters has a wired usb N64 controller. I still gotta get 1.
@@RetroGameCorps thaaanks!
@@RetroGameCorps BTW, with God of War I literally had problems with my... original PSP...

Can you post some tutorials of how you did it?
NVIDIA Shield FRIEND I'M LOOKING FOR A CONSOLE JUST TO PLAY (( NINTENDO, SUPER NINTENDO, ATARI, MEGA DRIVE AND MASTER SISTEN GAMES )). CAN YOU CONFIRM FOR ME IF THIS IS THE BEST CONSOLE I COULD HAVE IN TERMS OF STABILITY OF THE EMULATORS OF THESE CONSOLES THAT I SITE AND OLD GAMES? ME AND MY DAUGHTER HAVE THIS DOUBT TO PURCHASE THE BEST AND MOST STABLE CONSOLE TO RUN THESE OLD GAMES. CAN ANYONE HELP US AND CONFIRM US? OR DO YOU RECOMMEND ANOTHER RETRO VIDEO GAME MODEL? THANK YOU AND BIG HUG TO ALL COLLEAGUES HERE!
