Peter is one of our greatest storytellers. He is a prolific writer and musician and if you get the chance to hear his music it’s well worth every second of time.

Near the Nat Youth Science Camp is a motel called the Boyer Motel with a river and a gas station right next to it. I bet that's where they sat when this story was first told. I can picture it.
If intelligent extraterrestrial life contacted us then what would they have to say about humanity and our planet? Would their motives be benevolent or malicious? Would they give us direction for a better future? Would we see signs of their extraordinary technological advancement compared to ours? Considering that the universe was probably far too chaotic for life in its first couple billion years, if we consider that a sufficient home planet would have to exist to support life, I would say that other life would exist now more than ever. In other words, despite our short lifespans, the odds we are alone are skewed by the first quarter or so of the universe being useless... Just a thought.
lynx tamer In other words, if the most basic forms of life have existed fro about half of earth's life (or about 2 billion years), that makes up a large portion of the useful time since the universe cooled enough for it to be catalyzed (13 billion years - ~3by = 10 by and 2by is a fifth of that!).
That is a compelling point. We assume intelligent life is evenly distributed across time, when a moment's thought makes you realize that can't be true.

Peter, every time I see / hear this.. I am mesmerized. One of the best spoken words pieces EVER!
A perennial favorite of mine. Always brings me back to center.

You have the most wonderful speaking voice. It has resonance and power and you use it incredibly well. Thank you for sharing your story.
You. You keep up the good work, Uncle Peter.
Miss your sentience... and oh so honored to have spent some moments in time.
Best,
Liza
Thank you for spending every day shouting out why it is worth it anyway!!!!
Wonderful, Peter, to have one of your stories recorded so well on video!
Great story. Brilliant presentation. What a way to explain a highly complicated concept in terms easily understood.
A beautiful, thought-provoking song from my favorite PM album!
Loved watching you do this! Thanks for sharing it.
Simply awesome speech ..wow!
Beautiful Peter…
Beautiful writing!
This is exactly what I have thought. Time is the bigger divider than space.
At the distances we are discussing, time is space/space is time.

@@MrApplewine Exactly my point! 👍🏾
Astropoetry from a master! A tiny slice of time is all we get, and then it ends. This is not a rehearsal...

Great!
Great speach! Such letters are a great idea!
(But I'm wondering about the left-over robots from such civs.)
As a Muslim, this reinforces my faith in the One Creator.
hilarious
+Ziyaad Gurhan You just listened to instrumental music m8
absolutely haram
Same here. I'm a Christian. This also reinforces my faith in The Creator too.
as an atheist, this confirms my complete absence of a any sort of belief in an 'invisible being' and I am more than happy with that
I wonder if Steven Spielberg knows about this.

I wonder what Seth Shostak of SETI thinks of this, it kinda makes his work obsolete.
That's like saying an archaeologist's work is obsolete.

Yes. But we only travel on moon there is 50 years -> it changes the scale ! ;)
That's one small step for a Man, one giant leap for Mankind. A fly dropping for The Big Universe :D.

Hey man, the neck on that guitar joins the body at around the 14th fret. Who makes it. I want one!
William Skinner Martin and Co I believe, not sure what model
It's a CF Martin OM-15, made around 2000. They don't make them anymore. But a 000-15 is roughly the same guitar.
Why hasn't intelligent life tried to contact us? Because they are way too intelligent. That's why.
Loving the insult embedded into the question.
*I can't hear it?
Why does he have the guitar?
this was just an exträçt. he played previoußly.
Sounds true. Too bad
What if he is an alien?
people need to learn how to deinterlace video :(
To my mind this was 8 minutes of wasted time.
