  • TEDxKC 2013: Defy Impossible. Anne Mahlum is a social entrepreneur who loves to create and build with purpose. The majority of her focus over the past four years has been on Back on My Feet, a non-profit organization she started in Philadelphia in 2007 that uses the power of running to change the way those experiencing homelessness see themselves so they can make real change in their lives.
Anne regularly speaks at corporate events, academic institutions and conferences. She has presented on leadership, inspiration, the business behind starting a nonprofit, fundraising, social change and of course, the issue of homelessness.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Now there's an intelligent woman, she put two and two together. If you want to change people's life's help them believe in themselves, and wait for them to take the reins of their destiny.
Also, such a selfless act inspired by the love she has for her father. What a great example of what it means to be a human being. Much respect Anne Mahlum!

This lady who is my age presently, 2022, did something amazing with her skill set. I haven't heard of this program and I was homeless in Clevlenad, Ohio and a couple time homeless with my baby boy at the time at the age of 7 yrs old. I had no clue what I was going to do being a now single mother, my home was taken by the bank, his father a cheater and alcoholic wouldnt help keep the home (too much to leave here), and my college education was dropped immediately. The whole world shifted while I had this little boy who is now 20 yrs old, to take care of and raise. It's funny, I use to run everyday before he was born. That's why I'm leaving a comment that will never be read. Homeless people are human. And running is an accomplishment that makes you feel good.

She probably didn't realize when she was starting this but through research she does know more about it. Running and moving and getting your heatbeat up for a little while changes so many good-feeling and good-healthy affects. One of The biggest benefits when you tun is that it highly affects the brain right down to the chemicals that are giving you a runner's high, it also lowers the bad stress hormones. But the greatest scientists have found is that running and other types of movement exercise actually and regardless of age, the exercise stimulates your brain to start building brand new brain cells that carry messages, helps you learn easier, changes you emotionally and mentally. It is a great help to drug addiction. As your brain makes these new cells and the connections between them, you are implanting a new you. If you continue to run for say many years the negative way their brains were working will change over to have more positive ways of thinks. By running you are growing parts of a new brain and while the messed up brain is being taken down due to disuse. There is so very many benefits to running. The benefits are endless. Good for you to start a movement. Get them moving and then the next step should be to find housing for them, Finland or Norway but I think it was Finnland where they no longer have anymore homeless people, you can look that up to see how they do it and the rational behind why its working and then use your running as examples of who needs homes and with homes they can financially get some help from government and other organizations because they have finallly have an address. No address no government benefits. You can blow this up as big as you want too, study the country with no more homeless, and I need you to read a book that shows all the brain changing studies and proofs that brain changing does. But I have to try to find which book that I thought was really good and extremely relevant. I will get back to you on the name of the book. It's an easy read

This truelly is an idear worth sharing and hopefully will catch on in other nations, no matter if privatly organized and/or statessponsored. Those on the sidelines of society should not be ignored or left alone, but maybe at times deserve even more care than others. Can you come to Oregon and get this idea going here?! We have such a huge homeless issue here and the state keeps moving them and cleaning up the messes without ever addressing the root of the homelessness itself. Mental health, self esteem, encouragement, opportunities to feel like a normal part of society. Something needs to be done about the work ethic and the motivation that is lacking to do better and be better. Generational poverty in Oregon has become a choice because the funding is used to support it instead of teach and train and build up the people to a brighter future.

She's a fantastic speaker. Great story. Also, looks like P!nk. And something tells me she would like P!nk's music.
