Technically, the most "dressed up" people are the most superficial and shallow and sad inside. They have to dress up to make up for the lack of substance inside themselves. People dress up to hide the fact that they have empty bank accounts. Never judge a person by their cover.
He says 'We' a lot. Also, besides his obviously informal choice of clothing, his speech is very casual as well. In sum - he is the holy grail of humility and authenticity. He's not trying at all, not asking for anything from the audience, just sharing. This may be one of the best Teds I've ever watched.

''We" is acknowledging that he isn't the only wheel in the mechanism.. he acknowledges other people's work and sacrifice. Seems like a legit genuine dude..

The reason why he's been so successful, is because he had a "go with the flow" attitude - he never had much ATTACHMENT to the OUTCOME. He put in his effort, but then he LET GO to wherever life took him. And it seems like that's what made all the difference :) It's like what Audrey Hepburn said: "I decided, very early on, just to accept life unconditionally; I never expected it to do anything special for me, yet I seemed to accomplish far more than I had ever hoped. Most of the time it just happened to me without my ever seeking it."
Success is freedom. Magnus , you’ve ignited a spark within me- quit school at 15, driving a tractor trailer at 16.. open road freedom. On the road fell in love with skyscapes and went on to get a pilot’s license ( for small airplanes) which was easy to do in the 80’s. Then fell in love with the sea. Moved on to sailing. Loved the freedom. From there ( for no particular reason) I studied to become a neuroscientist. Got the big office with windows but stuck at my desk glued to the computer, watching the clouds pass by. I felt trapped. Quit job, became a visual artist and am presently teaching myself quantum mechanics. Hard to say what’s around the next bend. Thank you:) my gut feeling is to get a job with SpaceX
I turned down a collage scholarship. The day after high school graduation I got on a bus from DC to Florida with no clue where I was getting off. I was homeless for a bit while training to become a pro wrestler. After 3 years of blood sweat and tears I made it to the big leagues and traveled the world. Did some more cool stuff after that. I’m current traveling for fun. I love the freedom. I also create visual art and I love quantum mechanics. I also had a user name “sky of blue” haha go for space x!!
If you watch Magnus' body language throughout his talk, it perfectly explains why he has had such "luck" as some call it. He is constantly giving signals of indiference and curiosity. This combination leaves a person with vastly more options then having a predetermined outcome of how success need be found. Less boundries = more oppritunities. Most would have considered getting the wrong size pants bad luck or a negative experience. He did not. He simply made an adjusment so they would serve his needs better and went on with his day... make any sense?
+SS Minnow He leaves everything a bit open, like there is more to him that what shows. It keeps you wondering and paying attention. He is sneaky good at marketing his differences. The trick in all of how it has worked is that he has always had a profit motive lurking just enough to finance the crazy part.

this guy is amazing. i like how he mentioned how "we never asked anyone what they thought" and I think that's really important. because when you start to ask and you start to care, you're no longer doing it for you.
Also, the interesting thing about 'not' asking the opinions of others is that you don't have to listen to the "nay-sayers" and the "doom-predictors" ... whether or not someone is coming from a place of loving you or not, sometimes others cannot see the unique perspective that you may add to the world :)
He's not bragging about he's success, he's just giving he's success as an example that following your gut feeling will bring you success you just have to believe yourselfs!

Magnus can tell a story well. And I like how candid he was when he said he didn't even know why he was invited to speak. But I think my favorite part was when he finished. He simply walked off the stage. He came, he conquered, he left. About as honest a presentation as you can have.
all people saying it is just luck, if you do research you will find that many many success stories, maybe even all of them, come from people following their guts and doing what they love. this was the way steve jobs worked, and what he believed in. you may not know what it is like to have gut feelings because you have been ignoring them for so long, so just go out and live and do things you think you might like until one day you will feel it. it seems scary to follow your gut at first, but when your truly living vibrantly, you can really feel it and it's not that scary anymore, it's just exciting and fun.
Emma Lillian In order to make any type of decent evaluation however you would need to see how many people followed their gut and failed miserably and then compare the numbers. Then you can say if there's no luck involved or not.
It's really strange how Magnus' Talk feels so uncoordinated, but it fits the topic of "gut feeling" so perfectly. I think this talk fits the topic just perfectly. What an amazing guy.

Yeah i have read a few negative comments about this fella now and i think it is probably just down to jealousy sadly. The way that he has pretty much just gone with his "gut feeling" roll with the punches attitude is really refreshing in this day and age, and i immediately relate as i am English and Northern like him so knows where he comes from "literally".
I second that thought, seeing this name pop up on TEDx was an immediate click on the video, coming from the car world, he is well known, and ive followed him for little under a year after hearing about his character in need for speed 2015, all the people in that game all became car legends in some way, and thats my goal. For the majority its just some homeless looking man. But hes actually a living " I dont care what you think about me" attitude. It makes life alot easier and makes you become a leader, a boss, and not a slave to something bigger then you.
For those of you who think this man "stumbled through life and got lucky" I would suggest watching his movie. The full length version is on youtube. This man is focus and passion personified. He was not afraid to learn something new and use that focus and passion to do it better than others. He is a self made man and a role model regardless of how you think he looks.
The secret is that he consistently works to move his top dreams forward... He aligns his own stars, so to speak, because he is driven for his own reward. He next applies his success as a platform to reach higher and higher. We all have this capability but it requires complete discipline and resourcefulness to get to this level. Being your own genuine person helps a lot... Happy looking humble winner. Good on him.
I don't think so. He is not focusing on goals or "reaching" for anything. That is the point. He just does what he does and accepts whatever comes along and makes the most of every situation. Someone else above (later) wrote that he is not attached to the outcome of anything he does. That may well be true. Maybe it is about creating freedom for yourself. None of these things he did would have happened if he'd been in a 9-to-5 office job, clean-shaven and never had the guts to ignore that kind of traditional "security". He's a bit like Steve Jobs.
I stumbled onto this video wondering what this homeless guy was doing on a TED talk. Little did I know he was a guy where everything he has touched in his life has turned to gold. I don't think it is just a matter of going with your gut feeling because he never had to chase any of it, THEY ALL CAME TO HIM! I'm sure that you need to have all the ingredients in place to make things happen, like passion, hard work, talent and a fearlessness to jump in to something new. But this is just laying the groundwork for creating the conditions so that when luck comes your way, you are ready for it to jump in and take it. For most, that luck comes along only occasionally, but for him, it seems, lady luck has been chasing him down all his life. Good on him.
Magnus's inspiration he exodus is that he follows his own road by being him self. Follow his inspiration not his road! Happiness comes from being satisfied within ourselves on our own path, not with external material success and having possessions we desire just because others have them.
The coolest TED I've watched. I have a tendency to go against my gut feeling and do the "safest" bet. This is probably the time to do the leap of faith.
Wow! Never thought I'd stumble upon this comment again. Well, one thing's for sure, I did, and I put myself out of misery. This will be a bit long. Before, I was practically dragging my feet to work. I stayed because it was a full-time job (with retirement benefits and all). But I have terrible bosses, not all of them but most of them. They won't believe you when you call in sick, they will ask for your opinion just to tell you that theirs is right (they tend to resort to their "tried and tested" methods but they're expecting different results, and for that reason, us young ones just kept mum during meetings even when we can offer other ways of doing things), and you always have to justify your overtime work even when they just gave you the work when you're about to clock out. I resigned not knowing where to go next (I wouldn't recommend it, though). I just got lucky that when I talked to a former mentor, she immediately offered me projects. Sure, I wasn't a full-time employee, but my salary doubled and I got to travel the country (as part of the job). Fast forward to today, I love my work now. I consider my workspace as a safe space where I can express myself freely and where my opinions were considered.
As an artist for more than 4 decades. The is nice to hear a story of a creative follower of one’s gut who has been lead into prosperity, more of us find something different than that. I cant even begin to express the reality of the artist’s path, the continuing production of new art and the dust it all collects as it takes its space in a corner of another room of my house. The stacks of written material that has fueled hope and despair, the sense of doing, doing, and accepting the small radius of impact my work effects....its good for me, its therapeutic I suppose. I remember years ago when singer john melencamp, had a story done about his paintings, already a “super star” and one touch of a paintbrush and boom, acknowledged painter, while I’d been hunched over oil paint for 15 years....that line of thinking does nothing positive. So it was great to listen to Magnus this morning, during this pandemic, these strange days. I will hike in the frozen upstate New York woods today, light the old pot belly stove in my studio and sand wood for the 5th straight day, shoot some target archery and be grateful that I continue to stay on the artist’s path, my die has been cast a long time ago. I am an artist, I don’t follow, i prosper enough mowing lawns and plowing snow all the art-glory is fun to imagine but not what most of us will get, do it for your gut.
He makes me feeling like getting my dreames to be a reality is simply easy. And just love how he doesn't lose the Porsche out of his focus. Stay focused on your dreams.
This guy is a good example of being open to opportunities that present themselves and taking advantage of them. He is ultimately an extremely flexible individual.

A lot of times, if you’re open to it, and meet it half-way, you find yourself enjoying content that speaks to you in profoundly satisfying ways-this talk by Magnus did just that for me.
This guy builds sweet porches, I have seen a video on him and his cars years ago, and shows that you must want it, really want it, no matter what you're need is you must not let anyone take you off the track you know you should be on.
This guy is totally out of the Matrix. I loved so much this talk, it's my new Ted fav; I saw it twice today, one by myself and another with my 16 year old son and he also loved it and loved Magnus.
I have watched hundreds of Ted talks given by people who speak publicly for a living. This man was the most articulate, easy to listen to and comprehend, confident and well-delivered of every single one of them!
I'm trying all along as I heard Magnus tell his story to catch my breath. My pulse was racing as I realized that what he was saying was something I knew about (the 'gut feeling'), but never really went with it. This has really hit home for me. Thank you.
Magnus says it at 11:49-12:02: "I had passion... if you've got the will, desire, put motivation in [determination], and are focused, things tend to happen. A little bit of luck and a leap of faith help as well." Do not judge a man's character by his looks. I have worked in the corporate world and met many traditional looking people whose values I do not respect. I had the pleasure of accidentally meeting Magnus and his lovely wife Karen once. They kindly invited me, a total stranger, to join them at their cafe table sharing their food, drink and conversation. I was not dressed in any manner that communicated I was a production manager for this event. I believe his success is also based in something additional to his comments above, he explores unknown situations with honesty, curiosity and willingness to share.

I think he left out that Magnus has great intuition and self discipline. Clearly he lacks something (what man doesn't?), but whatever it is, it's not substantial enough to impede his progressive successes
been living this way my entire life. Sometimes successfully, sometimes unsuccessfully. The key is the balance between believing in yourself and being realistic when something isn’t working. Having multiple interests doesn’t hurt either.

The overall message I got from this, other than trust your gut, was be yourself! Do what you enjoy and like. Damn he went to LA at 19, homeless, no support system, not even a citizen, no plan at all, and managed to be able to quickly be able to support himself and then run his own business in 3 years. This was before everyone had cellphones and internet access.
Wow. OMG Ive got so many parallels with Magnus. I grew up in Sheffield in the 80's too. In fact I went to the same school as Magnus (Silverdale Comprehensive), but 3 years later than him. I never knew him. I also went to America on a "Camp America" (actually Work America) programme, and had some amazing life changing experiences, and fell in love with heavy metal at the same time. Later on, back in the UK I bought a Porsche 924, and fell in love with Porsches. I didnt have the same level of success as Magnus, but I have no regrets, and I absolutely followed my gut.
I believe Magnus engineered his luck. Better yet, he was given the opportunity and he did not waste it. Other people try to study people like him. He must be doing something right to be satisfied in his life. He was also fearless. My take away from his talk was not so much as just "go with your gut feel" but more of: 1- "know what you really, really, really want", 2- be courageous when the opportunity comes that'll let you get what you want, 3- sometimes it might not even be clear where the opportunity will take you, but be smart, be brave, do your best to work with what you have. See, he's not just incredibly lucky. He figured out what to do with what he has even if he may not be actively figuring out what to do next. I guess this is what you get when you live in the moment. My only comment on his appearance is that, sadly, it distracts people from listening to his message. We have not yet evolved to look beyond what's in front of us.
I don't think he was fearless, who of us is unless we're a sociopath. What he did was regardless of the fear, he moved forward to see what was around the next corner and what he found was excitement, and he did things with his passion and he got other people excited. And people with money bought in, and here we are talking about what? HIM -
The only thing you've missed is that he knew how to cut a deal. Possibly the most important factor in business/financial success? You can have all the other ingredients but without that sense of entitlement that you're worth 150% profit for minimal effort, you're not going to get anywhere. I would probably say "here you can have the jeans for 5 bucks, they don't really fit, etc..."
A younger version of himself with that appearance didn't hinder him like it does now. Back then it suits him and looks wacky. Now he just looks homeless, lol!
beberoo I actually think his appearance sets him apart and adds to her persona and character. He can pull off the 'outlaw' image with it and it's one of the reasons why he's interesting. Like Steve Jobs' reluctance to wear suits. Magnus doesn't fit in he stands out.
savedfaves I agree with you that he stands out. As another person said here, he looks homeless. Think about it. Perhaps that will be next fashion craze. I remember back in the 60's everyone was wearing army fatigue shirts and jackets and looking poor was cool. Then, if someone wore bright shinny silk looking cloths they'd have looked like out casts. As they say, what goes around comes around. I kind of have never grown out of those hippy days myself. My grown children usually buy me a flannel shirt or a tee shirt for summer since I'm retired. Yes, I had to go through the days of wearing office attire, but always thought khaki pants, shirt, and a tie wasn't at all comfortable.. The only place you saw cloths that are fashionable today was perhaps at a ski resort, which reminds me of one of the things we still laugh about today. It was in the early 90's and I'd decided to take my two boys skiing. We're standing in line to catch the lift and I noticed that they were whispering to each other, smiling, and looking at me knowing I was going to ask why. I had on blue jeans, my old fatigue jacket, and a plain black wool ski hat. I kind of looked like Joe Pesci in "Home Alone." Well, one of them spoke up. "Dad, you look like a bank robber!" That's when they got my friendly lecture. I said " Listen to me sons. I grew up in the days when we didn't judge people by what they wore, but by who they were." Also, I might add, it was not fashionable to talk about ourselves in the 60's and 70's. I'd love to see those days come back. Today, the young are sometimes called the "me generation," who can never seem to have enough STUFF. I hope I haven't offended anyone.
A lot of people may think Magnus' success was luck and passion, to some degree absolutely, but the most priceless lesson from Magnus is the fact that a heavy metal guy can sew and redesign pants just because he had to.
What an incredibly narrow scope to see the vast expanses of humanity through. I imagine that could become very lonely and boring limiting one's view in such a way, and to be self imposed feels tragic to me.
I've always followed my gut feeling. It's taken me to 3 different states and back to 1 of them. I dont know why I'm still here, I want to head to another, my gut tells me no. I love this guy's layed back attitude, yet he's gotten so far. Enjoyed listening to him

I like this. That's what I have always done, aside from addiction that had to be overcome, I can relate. The "leap of faith" and "going with the gut feeling", I have not yet been as "lucky" and my success is more in the satisfaction of the "freedom" derived from just doing what I like, and what I want. I love the talk from Magnus, especially that he is very humble, considering his accomplishments.
You are what you think you are. I tell people around me what I intend to do. That solidifies my intentions and it lives in other people's heads. That motivates me to follow through.
All these negative comments I read here.. no one can just take things for what they are. There's always something negative to be said about everything, apparently. What is the need for this? I mean, I understand constructive criticism but come on, some of these comments don't even apply to that. This guy is just on here telling his story. If it's boring or lacking of certain nuances you feel "necessary," don't effin watch it! It's pretty damn simple. There are millions of videos on these here interwebs.
it's simple... people are jealous, ungrateful and cannot understand that Magnus did the most simple thing: he lived his dream, and with dedication and luck (one always needs that) achieved more than the average sucker! ;-)

Agreed, will sipp. The main thing the internet has accomplished is to show how many angry, MEAN, vicious, rude, bitter, unhappy, ignorant, terrified people there really are in the world. A whole lot of people out here in cyberspace seem desperate to spread as much rage as possible before they die, as if that will make their lives better and make a positive contribution to the world.
I hope people realize that his story wouldn’t work in any other time, place, or with anyone else but him. It’s nothing short of amazing and impressive!
He has a very special vibe about him. He reminds me slightly of Johnny Depp's energy. They both embody this energy of living in your own world, not trying to seek attention from the outside world, and when your behavior isn't based on trying to prove something to the world, that is authenticity. This man is absolutely the personification of a laid-back, innocent energy. Love it, love it!!
I have said for years that if my head isn't happy with making a decision, then I'll ask my gut. Your presentation has just reedified that process. Terrific story Magnus.

I have been self employed since I was 19.. First a house cleaning business for 18 years because it was better than being stuck in a building every day doing office work.. then a book keeping business that I only had for a year.. then started a home based business 15 years ago and I travel the world and run my business on my phone!

This idea I believe originated with Socrates, who believed that the "gut feeling" or strongest thought in your head was essentially GOD telling you what to do
The "gut" feeling is actually poorly understood. Most people don't realize that their entire body has neuronic connections, and while your brain is the clustered center of neurons, it is not the only part of your neuronic system. Your "main" brain thinks in its own ways, but so too does the rest of your body in its own way. To ignore your gut feeling is to ignore an important part of your thought process that you dismiss because the "feelings" don't seem concrete enough to hold their own in the face of reason. Its basically the same as ignoring the "voice" in your head when you think and making decisions based on only the "logic" part of your brain. Like Spock.

The reason why he's been so successful, is because he had a "go with the flow" attitude - he never had much ATTACHMENT to the OUTCOME. He put in his effort, but then he LET GO to wherever life took him. And it seems like that's what made all the difference :) It's like what Audrey Hepburn said: "I decided, very early on, just to accept life unconditionally; I never expected it to do anything special for me, yet I seemed to accomplish far more than I had ever hoped. Most of the time it just happened to me without my ever seeking it."

Success is freedom. Magnus , you’ve ignited a spark within me- quit school at 15, driving a tractor trailer at 16.. open road freedom. On the road fell in love with skyscapes and went on to get a pilot’s license ( for small airplanes) which was easy to do in the 80’s. Then fell in love with the sea. Moved on to sailing. Loved the freedom. From there ( for no particular reason) I studied to become a neuroscientist. Got the big office with windows but stuck at my desk glued to the computer, watching the clouds pass by. I felt trapped. Quit job, became a visual artist and am presently teaching myself quantum mechanics. Hard to say what’s around the next bend. Thank you:) my gut feeling is to get a job with SpaceX

I turned down a collage scholarship. The day after high school graduation I got on a bus from DC to Florida with no clue where I was getting off. I was homeless for a bit while training to become a pro wrestler. After 3 years of blood sweat and tears I made it to the big leagues and traveled the world. Did some more cool stuff after that. I’m current traveling for fun. I love the freedom. I also create visual art and I love quantum mechanics. I also had a user name “sky of blue” haha go for space x!!

If you watch Magnus' body language throughout his talk, it perfectly explains why he has had such "luck" as some call it. He is constantly giving signals of indiference and curiosity. This combination leaves a person with vastly more options then having a predetermined outcome of how success need be found. Less boundries = more oppritunities. Most would have considered getting the wrong size pants bad luck or a negative experience. He did not. He simply made an adjusment so they would serve his needs better and went on with his day... make any sense?

Magnus can tell a story well. And I like how candid he was when he said he didn't even know why he was invited to speak. But I think my favorite part was when he finished. He simply walked off the stage. He came, he conquered, he left. About as honest a presentation as you can have.
all people saying it is just luck, if you do research you will find that many many success stories, maybe even all of them, come from people following their guts and doing what they love. this was the way steve jobs worked, and what he believed in. you may not know what it is like to have gut feelings because you have been ignoring them for so long, so just go out and live and do things you think you might like until one day you will feel it. it seems scary to follow your gut at first, but when your truly living vibrantly, you can really feel it and it's not that scary anymore, it's just exciting and fun.

Yeah i have read a few negative comments about this fella now and i think it is probably just down to jealousy sadly. The way that he has pretty much just gone with his "gut feeling" roll with the punches attitude is really refreshing in this day and age, and i immediately relate as i am English and Northern like him so knows where he comes from "literally".
I second that thought, seeing this name pop up on TEDx was an immediate click on the video, coming from the car world, he is well known, and ive followed him for little under a year after hearing about his character in need for speed 2015, all the people in that game all became car legends in some way, and thats my goal. For those of you who think this man "stumbled through life and got lucky" I would suggest watching his movie. The full length version is on youtube. This man is focus and passion personified. He was not afraid to learn something new and use that focus and passion to do it better than others. He is a self made man and a role model regardless of how you think he looks.
The secret is that he consistently works to move his top dreams forward... He aligns his own stars, so to speak, because he is driven for his own reward. He next applies his success as a platform to reach higher and higher.
We all have this capability but it requires complete discipline and resourcefulness to get to this level. Being your own genuine person helps a lot...

I don't think so. He is not focusing on goals or "reaching" for anything. That is the point. He just does what he does and accepts whatever comes along and makes the most of every situation. Someone else above (later) wrote that he is not attached to the outcome of anything he does. That may well be true. Maybe it is about creating freedom for yourself. None of these things he did would have happened if he'd been in a 9-to-5 office job, clean-shaven and never had the guts to ignore that kind of traditional "security". He's a bit like Steve Jobs.
I stumbled onto this video wondering what this homeless guy was doing on a TED talk. Little did I know he was a guy where everything he has touched in his life has turned to gold. I don't think it is just a matter of going with your gut feeling because he never had to chase any of it, THEY ALL CAME TO HIM! I'm sure that you need to have all the ingredients in place to make things happen, like passion, hard work, talent and a fearlessness to jump in to something new. But this is just laying the groundwork for creating the conditions so that when luck comes your way, you are ready for it to jump in and take it. For most, that luck comes along only occasionally, but for him, it seems, lady luck has been chasing him down all his life. Good on him.

Wow! Never thought I'd stumble upon this comment again. Well, one thing's for sure, I did, and I put myself out of misery.
This will be a bit long.
Before, I was practically dragging my feet to work. I stayed because it was a full-time job (with retirement benefits and all). But I have terrible bosses, not all of them but most of them. They won't believe you when you call in sick, they will ask for your opinion just to tell you that theirs is right (they tend to resort to their "tried and tested" methods but they're expecting different results, and for that reason, us young ones just kept mum during meetings even when we can offer other ways of doing things), and you always have to justify your overtime work even when they just gave you the work when you're about to clock out.
I resigned not knowing where to go next (I wouldn't recommend it, though). I just got lucky that when I talked to a former mentor, she immediately offered me projects. Sure, I wasn't a full-time employee, but my salary doubled and I got to travel the country (as part of the job). Fast forward to today, I love my work now. I consider my workspace as a safe space where I can express myself freely and where my opinions were considered.

As an artist for more than 4 decades. The is nice to hear a story of a creative follower of one’s gut who has been lead into prosperity, more of us find something different than that. I cant even begin to express the reality of the artist’s path, the continuing production of new art and the dust it all collects as it takes its space in a corner of another room of my house. The stacks of written material that has fueled hope and despair, the sense of doing, doing, and accepting the small radius of impact my work effects....its good for me, its therapeutic I suppose. I remember years ago when singer john melencamp, had a story done about his paintings, already a “super star” and one touch of a paintbrush and boom, acknowledged painter, while I’d been hunched over oil paint for 15 years....that line of thinking does nothing positive.
So it was great to listen to Magnus this morning, during this pandemic, these strange days. I will hike in the frozen upstate New York woods today, light the old pot belly stove in my studio and sand wood for the 5th straight day, shoot some target archery and be grateful that I continue to stay on the artist’s path, my die has been cast a long time ago. I am an artist, I don’t follow, i prosper enough mowing lawns and plowing snow all the art-glory is fun to imagine but not what most of us will get, do it for your gut.
The return for your efforts sounds fit reward. Enjoy your shoot.

This guy is totally out of the Matrix. I loved so much this talk, it's my new Ted fav; I saw it twice today, one by myself and another with my 16 year old son and he also loved it and loved Magnus.
I have watched hundreds of Ted talks given by people who speak publicly for a living. This man was the most articulate, easy to listen to and comprehend, confident and well-delivered of every single one of them!
I'm trying all along as I heard Magnus tell his story to catch my breath. My pulse was racing as I realized that what he was saying was something I knew about (the 'gut feeling'), but never really went with it. This has really hit home for me. Thank you.

Do not judge a man's character by his looks. I have worked in the corporate world and met many traditional looking people whose values I do not respect. I had the pleasure of accidentally meeting Magnus and his lovely wife Karen once. They kindly invited me, a total stranger, to join them at their cafe table sharing their food, drink and conversation. I was not dressed in any manner that communicated I was a production manager for this event. I believe his success is also based in something additional to his comments above, he explores unknown situations with honesty, curiosity and willingness to share.

I always listen to my gut , and the few times I didnt ended in regret ! This man is truly living the dream ,
been living this way my entire life. Sometimes successfully, sometimes unsuccessfully. The key is the balance between believing in yourself and being realistic when something isn’t working. Having multiple interests doesn’t hurt either.

Wow. OMG Ive got so many parallels with Magnus.
I grew up in Sheffield in the 80's too. In fact I went to the same school as Magnus (Silverdale Comprehensive), but 3 years later than him. I never knew him.
I also went to America on a "Camp America" (actually Work America) programme, and had some amazing life changing experiences, and fell in love with heavy metal at the same time.
Later on, back in the UK I bought a Porsche 924, and fell in love with Porsches.
I didnt have the same level of success as Magnus, but I have no regrets, and I absolutely followed my gut.

I believe Magnus engineered his luck. Better yet, he was given the opportunity and he did not waste it. Other people try to study people like him. He must be doing something right to be satisfied in his life. He was also fearless. My take away from his talk was not so much as just "go with your gut feel" but more of: 1- "know what you really, really, really want", 2- be courageous when the opportunity comes that'll let you get what you want, 3- sometimes it might not even be clear where the opportunity will take you, but be smart, be brave, do your best to work with what you have. See, he's not just incredibly lucky. He figured out what to do with what he has even if he may not be actively figuring out what to do next. I guess this is what you get when you live in the moment. My only comment on his appearance is that, sadly, it distracts people from listening to his message. We have not yet evolved to look beyond what's in front of us.
I don't think he was fearless, who of us is unless we're a sociopath. What he did was regardless of the fear, he moved forward to see what was around the next corner and what he found was excitement, and he did things with his passion and he got other people excited. And people with money bought in, and here we are talking about what? HIM -
The only thing you've missed is that he knew how to cut a deal. Possibly the most important factor in business/financial success? You can have all the other ingredients but without that sense of entitlement that you're worth 150% profit for minimal effort, you're not going to get anywhere. I would probably say "here you can have the jeans for 5 bucks, they don't really fit, etc..."
A younger version of himself with that appearance didn't hinder him like it does now. Back then it suits him and looks wacky. Now he just looks homeless, lol!

As another person said here, he looks homeless. Think about it. Perhaps that will be next fashion craze. I remember back in the 60's everyone was wearing army fatigue shirts and jackets and looking poor was cool. Then, if someone wore bright shinny silk looking cloths they'd have looked like out casts. As they say, what goes around comes around.
I kind of have never grown out of those hippy days myself. My grown children usually buy me a flannel shirt or a tee shirt for summer since I'm retired. Yes, I had to go through the days of wearing office attire, but always thought khaki pants, shirt, and a tie wasn't at all comfortable..
The only place you saw cloths that are fashionable today was perhaps at a ski resort, which reminds me of one of the things we still laugh about today. It was in the early 90's and I'd decided to take my two boys skiing.
We're standing in line to catch the lift and I noticed that they were whispering to each other, smiling, and looking at me knowing I was going to ask why. I had on blue jeans, my old fatigue jacket, and a plain black wool ski hat. I kind of looked like Joe Pesci in "Home Alone."
Well, one of them spoke up. "Dad, you look like a bank robber!" That's when they got my friendly lecture. I said " Listen to me sons. I grew up in the days when we didn't judge people by what they wore, but by who they were." Also, I might add, it was not fashionable to talk about ourselves in the 60's and 70's. I'd love to see those days come back. Today, the young are sometimes called the "me generation," who can never seem to have enough STUFF.

A lot of people may think Magnus' success was luck and passion, to some degree absolutely, but the most priceless lesson from Magnus is the fact that a heavy metal guy can sew and redesign pants just because he had to.
What an incredibly narrow scope to see the vast expanses of humanity through. I imagine that could become very lonely and boring limiting one's view in such a way, and to be self imposed feels tragic to me.

I like this. That's what I have always done, aside from addiction that had to be overcome, I can relate. The "leap of faith" and "going with the gut feeling", I have not yet been as "lucky" and my success is more in the satisfaction of the "freedom" derived from just doing what I like, and what I want. I love the talk from Magnus, especially that he is very humble, considering his accomplishments.
You are what you think you are. I tell people around me what I intend to do. That solidifies my intentions and it lives in other people's heads. That motivates me to follow through.

All these negative comments I read here.. no one can just take things for what they are. There's always something negative to be said about everything, apparently. What is the need for this? I mean, I understand constructive criticism but come on, some of these comments don't even apply to that. This guy is just on here telling his story. If it's boring or lacking of certain nuances you feel "necessary," don't effin watch it! It's pretty damn simple. There are millions of videos on these here interwebs.

Agreed, will sipp. The main thing the internet has accomplished is to show how many angry, MEAN, vicious, rude, bitter, unhappy, ignorant, terrified people there really are in the world. A whole lot of people out here in cyberspace seem desperate to spread as much rage as possible before they die, as if that will make their lives better and make a positive contribution to the world.

I hope people realize that his story wouldn’t work in any other time, place, or with anyone else but him. It’s nothing short of amazing and impressive!
He has a very special vibe about him. He reminds me slightly of Johnny Depp's energy. They both embody this energy of living in your own world, not trying to seek attention from the outside world, and when your behavior isn't based on trying to prove something to the world, that is authenticity.

As of my commenting, this vid posting is 8 yrs old. This thought reminds me of "great songs are timeless". The "gut" feeling is actually poorly understood. Most people don't realize that their entire body has neuronic connections, and while your brain is the clustered center of neurons, it is not the only part of your neuronic system. Your "main" brain thinks in its own ways, but so too does the rest of your body in its own way. To ignore your gut feeling is to ignore an important part of your thought process that you dismiss because the "feelings" don't seem concrete enough to hold their own in the face of reason. Its basically the same as ignoring the "voice" in your head when you think and making decisions based on only the "logic" part of your brain. Like Spock.
