It happened to me, too. I got the black magic pocket, and the footage was so much better than everything else I have used. It looked like a movie, and that is all I wanted.
When you said "and then I took myself a little bit more seriously..." I swear I thought you were going to say "...I got myself a big, wholly hat". My bad.
I suffer from gas, and I’ve looked at the camera so many times and you hit the nail on the head as to why I’ve never bought it, auto focus. stabilisation is another lesser issue but not having both has always made it a dealbreaker for me. Great video and see your perspective.
@@JamieFenn oh it’s coming, no doubt. I think the next camera will be a Sony mount and chip. I think they’ll do a deal with Sony. I would not be surprised to see the highest end Sony’s with BRAW.
And for me as well. To anyone wanting to see a great discussion of the SIGMA fp, I would recommend the TH-cam video entitled "SIGMA FP | Deep Dive with Pawel Achtel ACS". In it, Pawel Achtel, a cinematographic professional, compares this tiny sub-$2000 camera, specifically in terms of color accuracy, against industry big names like RED Monstro, Panavision DXL2, Sony Venice, and Arri Alexa LF. Pawel's favorite camera for color reproduction had been the Sony Venice, but his test results showed the SIGMA fp to be more accurate. It is surprising how little attention this little gem of a camera has received.
If you really want a camera with AF, you can get the S5iix as a B cam which has great AF and class leading IBIS. It also shoots open gate and records ProRes to SSDs directly. You can also use all the L mount lenses on it.
@@JamieFenn Almost the exact same sensor is used in the FX9, S1, S1H, S5, S5II, S5IIX and this BMCC6K. Blackmagic always uses 16:9 or 17:9 sensors. Why do you think they use a 3:2 sensor here? And yeah, ProRes isn't RAW but you can get BRAW or ProResRaw from the S5IIX with an external recorder if you really need RAW.
Excellent! After at least sixty hours of research, this is also the camera I decided to buy. I have several Canon lens from my photography days. I’ll buy a good adapter for that. I don’t need auto-focus. I plan to do audio separately. Love that I can use a SSD. I’m going to fashion my own battery with a 50 amp hour 14.8 volt lithium ion battery to give me at least twelve hours of constant use.
It's funny... listening to all your requirements (dual ISO, RAW, false colors, peaking, 10-14 bit rates and WON'T break the bank! etc.) ... and I am like, "Oh, are you talking about my EOS-M & Magic Lantern?!" My EOS-M crosses all those specs. LOL Of course, there are extreme limitations to it, but it is as close as we can get to a true BRAW cine cam in a budget as we can get. That has been my A Cam since last year. Regardless, awesome video! Great tempo, video and audio visuals. Thanks for this! If I ever could afford this I would jump ship.
Continuing from my previous comment, I am a solo shooter, and the most important thing for me is equipment suited for run-and-gun filmmaking. I love Blackmagic Design; I think they make great products. Most importantly, they are not resting-they're always developing. Right now, for someone like me, Sony offers the best value for the money. However, I believe that in the near future, Blackmagic will deliver a proper camera for solo shooters.
My friend has shot me on a Black Magic, it’s beautiful what comes out but too heavy and not one man band enough for me filming myself If they ever start making smaller cameras I’d be down to try one out with continuous af of course :)
OLPF(Optical Low Lass Filter) is more for helping your frames not have moiré and false color, that rainbow effect you see on mostly man-made objects like clothes. It blurs the image slightly to remove some of that sharpness and in doing so stops the effect. The one in this camera works fairly well also.
As a long time Blackmagic shooter, I am moving away from Blackmagic Pocket cameras, you might want to check out the Panasonic S5iiX. I think that is the best of all the worlds. It's full frame, can shoot BRAW, ProRes RAW, great autofocus, great low light performance, can shoot to SD and SSD, incredible IBIS, great dynamic range, etc. The only thing it is missing is built in ND but I am ok with putting ND on the lens. Also, pricing is really great considering what you get.
@@OrigEntertainmentOfficial I am still using the s5 as my work horse, it hasn’t let me down yet.. from brutal heat, rain, mud, it just keeps on working through all the extremes. And the video that comes out of it is really great.
I’ve been super happy with the FX3 & A7siii. Over 3 years old and they are still great performers. Great video, black magic raw is really great to work with in post.
Been using the A7siii since the day it came out. Love it as well. But I am addicted to the raw workflow in DR. Both awesome cameras, and happy I have both for the jobs they’re designed for 🙏🏼
I went from this camera BMPCK6K Pro to the Canon R5C because of its hybrid design which includes cinematic capabilities and has a full frame 45mp sensor for stills. It’s honestly the best of both worlds, had it for over a year now, used it in studio, out in the field and travelling and honestly couldn’t be happier with it. I’ve decided to keep this even after considering the recent R5MK2.
I did this with audio recording stuff when I was younger and a ton of other things that are similar! Now a days I only buy what I really have to have or need. Or if something gets me excited and can spark my creativity! Ive been using a canon rebel t7i and my samsung galaxy s21 for a few years and looking at getting a Sony FX3 or FX30 or A7i_iv. But i just switched to davinci from fcpx and been looking at black magic cams and just cldnt decide whats right for me from them....
Thanks for the video. I just ordered the camera from CVP for €1.750.(1.900$) A little correction 4:45 An optical Lo pass filter helps avoid aliasing, not IR.
I got a similar story starting out. But I don't regret 'most' of my purchasing decisions. GAS is part of the learning curve. I learnt a lot from the tools I used the least cause it gives me better contrast to the tools I use the most. If I had not had that experience I would not truly know the tools I have. Everyone has to go though it. Consider it part of the cost of your education.
Not sure how much it contributed to mine or how crucial it is to learning how to become a better filmmaker. If I had someone to guide me and say "HEY! This is what you'll use almost every time don't waste your money!" Then I could have spent the time and money elsewhere furthering my talents and money in other/better ways.
@@JamieFenn Ya, but TH-cam is filled with budget kit and essential guides. We just fall victim to all the 'extras' that everyone posts too cause its how they make their living and it makes us feel like we will be better for having it. I know when I bought my GH5, I knew exactly what 2 lens I need, and the essential accessories. I knew right down to the penny what I needed. Fast forward and I have a bunch of stuff. But my original purchasing decision was spot on. I just had to play with the gimbals etc.
True but not everyone has your path. I feel like the majority of people see videos “incentivizing” every piece of gear out there. And not enough people saying “this is really all you need” probably because they want to drive sales.
@@JamieFenn Your correct. The only way to make it a living online is to sell something. Funds from the viewers need to transfer in some way to the creators. The only ways that work that don't require selling something are subscription models. However, not many people subscribe to what they think they can get for free elsewhere, even if that free content means they must be sold something too. People feel good buying stuff they don't need.
If this will be your only camera though, I'd say the a5ii is a better bet for doing photo as well. And if you absolutely need Braw you can get a video assist which is an absolute beast of a monitor.
A camera shooting Braw wont give you the same image texture the black magic will give you though. Like look at other cameras useing black magic Externally on youtube. It doesnt hit the same. So if you adore the image it produces get the black magic.
I absolutely love my black magic pocket 6K. The footage is beautiful! My only gripe is that the body is so wide that it is difficult getting it to balance on a gimbal.
Thanks for your videos! Im currently using a A7SIII with 55mm F1.8, 24mm F1.4 GM and 24-70 F2.8 GM for car videography. Came from a BMPCC 4k which didnt fit well for me because i need a gimbal and good AF for rolling shots.
I also ended up with an A7SIII. I used to have a "speed boosted" G1 Pocket 6K. I couldn't stand the rolling shutter jello on the P6K, so then I got an UMP 4.6K. Incredible picture, but it was just too bulky for me. I'm loving the A7SIII, but sure, I miss BRAW sometimes. Maybe I'll give ProRes RAW a try with a Ninja V+.
@@JamieFenn "Insane" is a stretch hah. BRAW is definitely handy to quickly fix footage in Resolve. Gives you a lot more leeway to shoot run & gun with BMD cameras. But BRAW is still debayered, so it's not "true" RAW (whereas ProRes RAW is not debayered). Just wish I could use the latter in Resolve, yet you can still convert the footage to ProRes 4444 to use in there. ProRes 4444 being a familiar staple in Hollywood.
@@katlis It's amazing that I LOVED my GH5's with the Ninja V+ and the Inferno's and thought I would never change but the P4K convinced me several years ago with BRAW and Resolve and now the FF 6K definitely are where it's at for me fortunately.
06:20 where are these stairs at? Dude if any skater or hell anyone was man enough to send it on even just part of this concrete monster it wld be historically epic!!! Guessing its a residential area? Or alwayz freezing... Snowboarders wld prolly do it too! Im seeing like plywood on the 1st set for speed then 50-50 down the 2nd set and across the flat, then try to ollie over the next set or have some more plywood or hell any trick, even on a razor scooter wld be out of this world!...
I think all of the BM 6Ks are the best camera for the money hands down for professional video. Everyone has different needs but it's crazy how good this camera is for about 2 grand.
I switched from Sonys to a BMPCC 4K 3.5 years ago and have never looked back. I use Zeiss milvus lenses (with and without a metabones) and that combo is a killer - such a beautiful image for a fraction of the cost of the Sony hybrids. The more you practice shooting without autofocus, the better you get and the more you hate the look of autofocus when you see it! There are loads of features I'd put ahead of it if BMD asked my opinion!
I agree! The color science of BMCC’s is my favorite now. Not having continuous autofocus is not a deal breaker but I know it is for a lot of people. Price wise - nothing touches it. I can’t believe not more people use it.
Yeah,. same with Resolve. Why is anyone on Premiere? I'd definitely urge you to try some Zeiss superspeeds - the image on that full-frame sensor will be stunning! If you adapt the nikon versions you have a de-clicked manual apeture °¬)
@@tds3653 Yes.... Practice LOADS! Rig it out - weight is your best friend. A rigged out camera gives a much nicer look that IBIS. I also use heavy lenses(Zeiss milvus f1.4s) so even without my rig I can hold it stable. Practice though, you'll get better before you know it. I have a gimbal which I never use. Too much faff. I have a tripod which I barely use - too inflexible. I love handheld - just shot an entire doco hand held and it looks great.
I just bought a BMCC 6k FF after a lot of angst, trying to decide between GH6 (having previously made all my gear choices centred on the GH cameras), Sigma FP and this camera. I was totally sold on it for 2 simple reasons: 1) that image is just sublime, and 2) the BRaw codec with integrated proxies workflow in DaVinci is unbeatable. The GH7 just came out, and I still don't have any regret (though the camera looks awesome). The BM user interface is a joy to use, and I feel it lets you just focus on your image not the camera. The FP image is lovely too, and I'm sure I'd have been happy had I gone that route, but I suspect the user experience and workflow would have had more friction in it. And as for autofocus, I've bought the PDMovie LiveAir3 Smart - it's more compact than the superb but bulky DJI system and does what I need. I'll gradually buy more full frame glass, but my APSC Sigma Art zooms can meantime cover full frame at their longer ends of the zoom range. And I just bought my first full frame anamorphic lens...
IMO the bmcc6k and all BM cameras are far superior than a lot of cameras out there. Especially in value. There’s just something about the look of BM footage that I’m addicted to 🙏🏼🔥
@@JamieFenn Yes agree completely, I still had an original BMCC up until a year ago... And I feel that their hardware and software benefit from integrated development in much the same way as Apple products, with their depth of know-how of image-processing pipelines shining through. To my eyes, this 6KFF camera is special in the same way the original was...
I starting a new project creating content for a construction company, so imagine outdoor living spaces, which shows before, during and afters and some talking head. The camera will be constantly moving so Im a little hesitant not having the continuous AF and internal stabilization. Do you see that as an issue for this type of filmmaking?
Well, it can go both ways and it depends on a lot of factors… let me explain. Auto focus isn’t always the best for everything. It can lock on to different things if you’re walking around in the frame. For talking head if your moving back and forth and putting things up in front of you and you want it to focus on it, then yes autofocus will be your friend 90% of the time. But with fully manual focus you can always make sure you get what you want in focus every time (as long you stay in the proper depth of field). Something I didn’t mention in the video is that you can connect to the camera with three Blackmagic app and monitor things that way. For filming yourself doing daily tasks I find myself putting my Sony cams in manual focus more than not.
Really looking forward to the Nexus (formfactor). Built in NDs are more important than autofocus, in my opinion. There are several amazing older cams on the market in this price range.
My husband has used the DJI pro 3 and weight isn’t the factor. The question is can the DJI handle the weight attachments? (For pro I’m sure and I know it is heavy) He plans his next run to have a harness when need to be hands free, to 2nd shoot if necessary. Will this also strain more on the DJI gimbals battery? Just planning if he needs to switch out the DJI battery after 3hours of wedding running.😅 does the camera use l series lens? By the way subscribed! ❤
i use an external npf battery (about 3hrs continous shooting) and a speedbooster for my old ef lenses with the 4k (costs about 1200) but if you can afford the 6k for double the price, its an even better deal. im fully sattisfied with my 4k so far though 😄 and a cheap gimbal for 300 (weebill s the weebills pro has even a follow focus included for only 100 more) solves the problem the internal giro function that the 6k has even better :)
Totally agree...I got a bmpcc4k and love it and I got a gh5 abd love it, I could care less about sony digital looks, I t a about the image bot autofocus abd all these bells and whistles...its all abo7t the idea and image
I was choosing between Blackmagic 6k, Canon R5C and Canon R3. I was testing all three of them in pre and post production. Blackmagic can be riged in a true cinema camera. And it gives great pictures.
I still got the OG BMPCC6K and paired with Sigma 18-35 I have awesome images. Colors are WOW (graded in DR), latitude for correction and grade is far more than 10-bit 4:2:2 Slog-3 (compared by myself on a project where we used BMPCC6K and A7SIII).
I have a pretty solid workflow to make sure the footage works for both cameras. I feel like I have more latitude with raw footage because of how far I can push it
@@JamieFenn Also the flexibility - i can set a rough white ballance for the shoot and rough exposure deciding between the two basic ISOs that we can change in post easy said :) I love these cameras!
I agree if you are willing to manual focus on every project, otherwise if you are one man band like myself on many gigs, specially jobs lately that most clients want fast cheaper productions for Social network type work. The BMPKCC is just over kill for projects like that. Not to mention having to manual focus.
Agreed. Just a different tools for a different jobs. Im addicted to the look the BMCC puts out though. I had the OG pocket years ago and have missed the color science ever since. Stoked to have this in my hands how! Fingers crossed for prores and continuous autofocus in future releases.
@@JamieFenn Yes the files are stellar... But I ended up selling it bc my clients did not notice the difference and I was always stressing and worrying about being in focus which is mandatory in my line of work which is fashion, retail and advertising and often not much of a budget for AC or even grips etc etc.. But the image was gorgeous and worked for my slow pace personal projects..
@@ekphotography Grab the DJI Lidar with RS3 then you can mount the lidar to the BMCC 6K and have INSTANT focus after attaching the gimbal just to calibrate the Lidar to the lens or of course use it with it. In my case I have multiple rigs and can do this with 3 units where I have 2 units on sticks and another on the gimbal.
I am looking for a cinematic 4/6k camera that fits in your pocket. Actually with one lens and absolutely small too 😬 I don’t think this one is produced..
@@JamieFenn 😬 i am using the Fujifilm xt4 with the allround lens 2.8 16-55mm. I bought the camera to photograph with it at cemeteries. It works great for me but sometimes I miss the ability of 60-85mm and f1.4-f1.0 with this lens. But in the meantime I want to make films too. I have watched a lot of videos about cinematic lenses and best cameras. I want to make documentary style & cinematic elements films, a combination of them. Just for creative ambitions, i’ll film myself but the most of the time others and the places which I will visit. What can you recommend? 🙏🏼🤷🏻♀️
I watched your video and I owned my bmpcc 6k pro for 3 years. You said it's only comes in L mount, that's not true. I have the ef mount on my camera, and I brought it that way. But I love the video.
Hey Jamie, I would love to get a little more insight on the gyro stabilization. I don't intend to walk or run with it, but I would love to know how satisfied are you with the stabilization on some simple handheld pans or tilts movements. I use my A7SIII on a ronin but my little and fragile arms wish to never hold a gimbal ever again.
Im pretty satisfied with it. For hand held shots without any running or walking it does a very good job. My default is to use the gyro data now on clips filmed with this camera but I sometimes test the other options before finalizing my choice. I usually stick to the Gyro option as it looks the best 90% of the time.
@@JamieFenn Thanks for that. Let's say you had a budget of $3,000 left after buying the camera. What lenses would you pick ? I think that adapting old lenses would be a smart move since there's no useable autofocus.
For my first and only cinema camera is the BMPcc 6K. Got a DJI RS2. with lens and battery pack it was huge and heavy. Now comes multiple trips to The EU and beyond. Way to much heavy equipment and getting onto Ryan air with checked luggage good luck. So I came up with perfect run and gun cinema set up for travel. Smallrig cage, top handle, Samsung 2TB SSD fitted into top mount, left handle attatched to cage, NPF90 Battery attatched to small rig mount on handle with small cable to port, can turn on and off with little red button. Use one lens Sigma 18-35 with Peters ND filters. All this fits nicely into Shimoda X70 bag. This bag also held my clothes for 2.5 weeks. I was able to compress and make it look small to get onto 5 flights with Ryan air in the upper storage bin. I brought 3 batteries and one day left it turned on most of the day went through 2 batteries and used the 3rd one to charge the Iphones which we used for secondary shots so the entire trip was recorded 2 times. Use a camera strap for lugging around camera and dumped the DJI RS2 as the BMPCC 6K now has gyro stabilization. Filmed the entire trip in 6K. Used same setting from Flo in Of Two Lands and everything came out great! Use Jamie Fenn for learnig Davince Resolve going on a few years now. Thanks Jaimie. It only makes sense to use the same camer made for the editing sofware. Color grading is a breeze when you over or under expose can fix in Davince as it has all the metadata from the camera. Which Davinci wont do with other cameras.
12 bit BRAW is a different thing in color retention, even in BMPCC4K, I can't look on traditional mirrorless cameras even if they have IBIS or autofocus. Colors of blackmagic is outstanding. RED and Canon C70 can be better with internal recording.
@@curtdp EXACTLY!! #1 for me is can it record RAW with good Color as that's the point of me having a camera to begin with in my mind in a cinematic universe. Would I like it to do other things if it could, SURE but I need a camera for narrative and docs that I can push around and not have a compressed image right out of the gate or extra expenses or external recorders. Imagine how all the ASC camera ops could debate about this years ago and it was about film stock then not autofocus or external recording. CHECK THE GATE!
The Blackmagic is a good camera but I will go fot the zv e 1 to film my outdoor adventures because of size and weight, the sony also has 15 steps of dynamic range i guess. Both incredible cameras for sure🤠💪👍 keep the good work man
It technically has 12.4 stops regardless of what is advertised. That number has come from official tests. Where as blackmagic advertises actually usable dynamic range. 13 stops is legit. And it’s 12 bit raw.
i looked at the price and yes you might be right it is a great camera for sure but it´ll also build up with the lenses and a gimbal and and and. i bought me a pocket 3 from dji and i have to say for real starters it is a beast!
Hey Jamie, great video as always, I wish I saw it before I bought my GH6.. But about they gyro data that it contains I belive you can use gyroflow software with much better use than Davinci. I use it for all of my gopro footage and its actually insane! You should definitely give it a try!
Awesome camera review, I went thru the exact same thing previously from canon to sony and now hmmmm got me contemplating lol of switching again, is there a L mount adapter for e-mount sony lens with minimum focus breathing?
Doesn't record internal raw... gotta buy an atmos to record externally. This has proxy recording as well fyi. But at the end of the day, it's all up to your use case - like I say in the video. I still think this is the best valued camera for what it does.
@@JamieFenn The s52 has proxy recording, gimbal like Ibis and even better AF now since 3.0 update but it does not have BRAW without a monitor and the 6K Full frame BM pocket is now under $1600 so if you do not need Ibis or continuous AF it is the better choice over the s52. I am old and shaky now so I need the Ibis for my handheld work but I am considering this to replace my S5 B camera which is usually set stationary on Tripod or floor for low angle
I moved from the BMPCC 4k to a used Panasonic S1H and a Blackmagic video assist last year. Better camera than the new bmpcc 6k. Better low light performance, smaller form factor. IBIS. Easier to balance on a gimbal. And if you look for deals you can get a used s1h for $1500 and a Blackmagic video assist for under $500. Less money, better camera. It has autofocus for those who need it. I use manual Anamorphic Lenses with the DJI Lidar for that. Great strip for solo Guerilla filmmakers. Currently shooting a no crew feature and short with it.
You're still not getting BRAW with that camera. IMO the BMCC 12 bit raw image is significantly better and like I say in the video, we're basically spoiled with the value this camera brings. Both are great cameras, but two totally different tools for the job. AND you get DR studio with it...
@@JamieFenn not to the video assist. It shoots 5.9k 16x9. But it has better low light performance. Which to me is more important. It's strange, because from what I understand, they have the same sensor.
Thanx for the review and also the info about this camera..I think ill wait for the Autofocus since im big on that and also a stabilizer. I own the studio version of Davinci but ive been shopping dor a camera to do more run and gun music videos type deal cinematic b-rolls and for that stabilizer and autofocus is pretty important. Great canera but at this time ill hold off on that. Thanx for letting me know how good this camera is and also whats missing and wish we had in this camera.
Great camera. Two problems: 1. No Continuous Autofocus. That is a MUST in 2014, no matter if you use it or not. It simply has to be available. 2. No stabilization. Again, it is 2024, every camera and lens simply has to have that option. You may say "I don't need it", but trust me, you do. Thx !
It really comes down to what you're filming. Gimbals are always an option + post stabilization for the lack of ibis (which works fine for me) and for the autofocus, yes It would be nice, but not a deal breaker. Now if this camera was more of a hybrid cameras (like the two other sonys I own) then yes I would say that's a deal breaker. But this camera offers advantages where others lack. Different tools for different jobs.
Too bad it's only 4:2:2 10-bit and can't record raw internal. I used to LOVE my GH5's I had 2 GH5's and 1 GH5S and sold them all for BMPCC4K's. Took a loss but whatever no longer needed an external recorder and had all the cine love I needed. I am interested in the best image quality not autofocus or stills and fortunately the BM cameras are about it plus I don't ever just shoot a black scene as I'm a cinematographer and light my subjects even if it's just dimly lit and have no issues with noise. Just got the BMCC 6K FF and it is pretty epical and even an anamorphic 75 to go with it. Now 3 BMPCC 4K's and the 6K FF and wouldn't change a thing!
@@dangerrayy I have 7" AndyCine external monitors for each as it is a lot easier to pull focus on my aging eyes so I don't rely on the built in 5" monitor most of the time. I shoot indoors and out with short films, interviews, features & docs. I have 2 BMCC 6K's and 3 BMP4K's with 2 being dedicated gimbal cameras.
Honestly, if the pocket series had the same AF as Sony I think I'd be moving all my gear over to L-mount. Replace my a7iv with the S5IIx and my a7siii with the pocket 6k full frame
Totally understand. I'll make sure to put in the word with BM. It's not that bad without it though to be honest. Just depends on your use case for sure. Fingers crossed they make cameras in the future with it though. Let me talk with them. Ill see what I can do :)
I am still hoping BM adds PDAF to a new camera. While most Hollywood productions don't use cameras with AF, as an indie/low budget filmmaker I look to AF to help speed up production and save costs. Autofocus can save a lot of time when filming, for obvious reasons. I think even Sony realized this when they released the new Burano camera. If I had $25K to play with, I'd jump on the Burano right away. But, I would love for BM to come out with a camera with AF because I love working with 12-bit BRAW. I had the BMPCC4K, and loved the imagery I captured with it. But, I switched to Sony for the AF power. That being said, I've also looked at the Panasonic S5iix and combining it with a BM Assist monitor to record BRAW to an SSD. I have a feeling that if BM does come out with a camera with AF that it may be 2-3 years before we see it given that the BMCC6K didn't come out that long ago. If BM does develop a camera with AF, I will definitely jump on it.
if autofocus is so important to you, why not use lidar? It's definitely cheaper than Burano and has been long time. I shot a few years ago on RS2 with lidar (3D-focus) for manual anamorphic lenses.
The major mistake one can make is wanting to have open gate to crop for social media. Although is a feature that can hep you it is not a good practice. Vertical content should be shot vertically for several reasons and reframing is a big mistake that will never cut. A least if you or the company you work for are not serious about social network. There is a learning curve when shooting vertical that people tend to avoid but will cost you the quality of your work when it is for social networks that base on vertical video since you did not frame you shot for it. You will always and up with a content that you lose important things and will always feel like that is cutted video. The focal lenght will be wrong all the time you will never be able to tell a story the way you suposed to.
never really saw cameras as whats most important.. its all about the lenses in my opinion i mean come on directors literally making movies with phones now.. lenses and lighting are the only thing you need to study.. budget cameras are not the problem
I had 6k pro. Due to low cost it's built quality is not that good. Plus there are limited options for repair. You can't exchange sensor for example, only buy a new camera. Space it takes...ufff. Youll easily spend that amount of money on ssds, especially if you wanna back your projects up. Customer service here in EU is very limited, people are waiting for months for warranty repairs. I think people need to talk more about that issues, which make the product very hard to consider outside of US. 🙏🏼 The image is great tho, no doubts abt it.
Agreed. It makes you very particular about how you film and how long you film. And I like that. It has a carbon fiber composite which I like. Build quietly seems to be the same as my other cameras but I haven’t owned it as long so I’ll need to do an update video this year.
It was a median price range option. But when I typed it out I had the sigma art 24-70 in mind. Link is I the description under camera A. (I actually bought it and will be arriving today!)
Honestly it’s not a dealbreaker for me. Not having it isn’t a big deal. It does have autofocus though. You just push a button. It just doesn’t have continuous autofocus.
@@JamieFenn Yeah I almost bought this.. but my style of filming being.. one man crew.. i need a proper autofocus as many of the shots I like to do are using motion while focus is locked on.
Saying the 80D "had like no video features" is wild. The greatest irony is that the 80D had incredible, world class auto focus in video mode for the time and this camera doesn't even have continuous auto focus 😅 Everything is relative I guess.
It did have video feature’s but it was extremely limited compared to what was out on the market at the time for the price. And yes this camera doesn’t have autofocus, but it’s comparing apples to oranges.
It was a meh camera. Especially for video. No log shooting. Low frame rates. I loved it don’t get me wrong, but I outgrew the camera in a couple weeks. Felt very limiting for what I wanted to do and explore.
@JamieFenn Casey Neistat, arguably one of the most successful photographer/videographers on youtube, used it for years. If your main concern was just how flexible it was for color grading, then yeah, it was not great. But that was well known from its release. We've all bought gear that didn't end up meeting our needs.
I was also traped in that deep rabbit hole called „cinematic“ once you realise its all in the lightnig of the scene and atmosphere..you will forget about the camera…just my two cents🥳
It's a great camera, but I felt very limited as a creator for the things I wanted to do with the camera. Starting off with color correcting and grading. There was no wiggle room with rec 709 straight out of camera...
Why is he adding up the prices when he already sold all of his gear why not subtract the gears he sold and add the gear he bought 1:26 . just for the content only???
3 main problems of this camera: 1. Crazy Rolling Shutter (Sometimes not fixable in post with gyro data) 2. No ProRes, only BRAW 3. Huge file sizes + No internal ND filters
@@JamieFenn When you shoot TV series and the director does 20-minute takes, a camera with ProRes 4444 or ProresRaw becomes a more profitable and convenient solution. If you work in Davinci - it's only ProRes 4444 or ProRes 4444 XQ(or 422 in some cases).
after looking into this camera enough i’ve basically put sony behind me. at this point, the comparison im most interested in is between this black magic pocket cam and the lumix s5iix. what do you people think? thanks for the review man
I have the S5II. Color science way worse than the BM. Not only that, it's just 10 bit, you have to make sure you do your WB every time you shoot (otherwise it's much harder to fix in post). Honestly, for me the S5II is good for photos and for quick video stuff but doesn't have the same beautiful filmic look that the BM has. Also, the greens on the S5II are so weird.
@@madsonit man thank you so much for the well-written reply. i’ve been suffering from indecision.. with the amount of variety and money one can spend in the world of cameras, it’s important to make educated decisions. because of what you said here i’m definitely putting lumix on the back shelf and leaning towards black magic. i only have 2 concerns - the autofocus and the stabilization. i want the filmic quality of the blackmagic, but at the same time, when I go to the world’s end for the shot of my dreams, I want to make sure I get the shot successfully - in focus, and stable enough. its a conflicting.. I also think many of us are frustrated that the pyxis just changed the form factor but recycled the exact same sensor without addressing these same criticisms blackmagic fans have wanted to see improved. i’ve considered even using an fx3 and just putting in the extra hours with dehancer on resolve to get the look i’m going for with not risking having captured unusable footage
@@krisangelo727 FX3 is a better choice than the S5II. But the price is more than 2x now. Is it worth it? I think if you build a rig and you learn how to shoot steady handheld you won’t have micro stuttering. Every time I look at some of my Pocket6k footage i feel something. It feels real. Exactly like I remember it. Every time I look at S5II footage it looks like a phone video taken through a good lens. Of course, I’m exaggerating but you get the idea. For me, autofocus and ibis are not as important as beautiful colors and images. Sure, the ibis in lumix is so good. But it’s not worth the compromise. After all, we all shoot a video, and the video is the most important. If it’s a bit shakey… it’s fine.
It happened to me, too. I got the black magic pocket, and the footage was so much better than everything else I have used. It looked like a movie, and that is all I wanted.
What did u have b4 a sony a7? Or pani gh5?
When you said "and then I took myself a little bit more seriously..." I swear I thought you were going to say "...I got myself a big, wholly hat". My bad.
😂
I suffer from gas, and I’ve looked at the camera so many times and you hit the nail on the head as to why I’ve never bought it, auto focus. stabilisation is another lesser issue but not having both has always made it a dealbreaker for me. Great video and see your perspective.
Fingers crossed we'll see a camera in the future with it. And thank you so much I really appreciate it!
@@JamieFenn oh it’s coming, no doubt. I think the next camera will be a Sony mount and chip. I think they’ll do a deal with Sony. I would not be surprised to see the highest end Sony’s with BRAW.
That said, what do I know, but that’s what I would do if I were both companies.
Ehhh we’ll see haha.
Yes sur
A thing to consider.... Sony Advertises Total Dynamic range. Black magic Advertises Usable dynamic range.
Doesnt matter with Sony's weird digital lookign colors
For me its the Sigma FP. Great for photos and great for video. And small.
Pro res is not raw. Totally different sensor as well
@@JamieFenn Almost the exact same sensor is used in the FX9, S1, S1H, S5, S5II, S5IIX and this BMCC6K. Blackmagic always uses 16:9 or 17:9 sensors. Why do you think they use a 3:2 sensor here?
And yeah, ProRes isn't RAW but you can get BRAW or ProResRaw from the S5IIX with an external recorder if you really need RAW.
When I brought it up to my contacts at blackmagic they said it wasn’t the same sensor at all.
LOL
Of course, there are extreme limitations to it, but it is as close as we can get to a true BRAW cine cam in a budget as we can get. That has been my A Cam since last year.
Regardless, awesome video! Great tempo, video and audio visuals. Thanks for this! If I ever could afford this I would jump ship.
How long will the EOS-M continuously record?
Continuing from my previous comment, I am a solo shooter, and the most important thing for me is equipment suited for run-and-gun filmmaking. I love Blackmagic Design; I think they make great products. Most importantly, they are not resting-they're always developing. Right now, for someone like me, Sony offers the best value for the money. However, I believe that in the near future, Blackmagic will deliver a proper camera for solo shooters.
I would love to see a more solo shooter centric camera come from blackmagic. Fingers crossed 🙏🏼
My friend has shot me on a Black Magic, it’s beautiful what comes out but too heavy and not one man band enough for me filming myself
If they ever start making smaller cameras I’d be down to try one out with continuous af of course :)
The image out of the blackmagic cameras just makes me feel a certain way. Blackmagic all day for me.
10/10 I own S5iix and it's just perfect. The new 6k BMPC is great as well tho.
@@OrigEntertainmentOfficial I am still using the s5 as my work horse, it hasn’t let me down yet.. from brutal heat, rain, mud, it just keeps on working through all the extremes. And the video that comes out of it is really great.
I like it's look and colors, but it has heavy noise reduction, smudging details and texture.
I’ve been super happy with the FX3 & A7siii. Over 3 years old and they are still great performers. Great video, black magic raw is really great to work with in post.
Been using the A7siii since the day it came out. Love it as well. But I am addicted to the raw workflow in DR. Both awesome cameras, and happy I have both for the jobs they’re designed for 🙏🏼
BRAW is absolutely fantastic! I miss it every day :D
It really is... Like I say in the video, I feel like I'm in a totally different world with the footage. Its insane.
and i suspect that the noise reduction in davinci is made for black magic sensors. its so great with braw :D
After being spoiled with BRAW and Davinci Resolve there's no looking back and always thought nothing would ever beat the Adobe suite with PP and AE.
@@WhyCallMeLordLord
Yup. It's just that good.
They’re two totally different cameras. Cant go wrong with either :)
Jamie, spending on a "wrong" camera and lenses is part of the growing process, wee all did it 😅
Hahah well this was a little heads up for everyone ;)
@@JamieFenn of course and as always you did a marvelous job.
Much appreciated thank you so much
Thanks for the video. I just ordered the camera from CVP for €1.750.(1.900$) A little correction 4:45 An optical Lo pass filter helps avoid aliasing, not IR.
Me too got mine for $1600 and some change.
@@chrisklugh Now we have to worry about having a C6 or a Huracan or Aventador or maybe the GTR.
I just wish they would get on the global shutter technology. The rolling shutter always gives this camera away.
I don’t find it to be an issue
If this will be your only camera though, I'd say the a5ii is a better bet for doing photo as well. And if you absolutely need Braw you can get a video assist which is an absolute beast of a monitor.
A camera shooting Braw wont give you the same image texture the black magic will give you though. Like look at other cameras useing black magic Externally on youtube. It doesnt hit the same. So if you adore the image it produces get the black magic.
I absolutely love my black magic pocket 6K. The footage is beautiful! My only gripe is that the body is so wide that it is difficult getting it to balance on a gimbal.
Yea it barely fit on mine. But I also had a cage
@@JamieFenn I also have a small rig cage for mine.
Understandable. Different tools for different jobs. Both amazing cameras!
I bet you miss Braw. It’s insane

💯 agree with you. I love it..
Freaking slick! Proxy’s in camera wow! I'm still tossed was thinking of a c200 II
Yea it’s amazing! The workflow with braw is so nice in DR. Game changer
Any tips on shooting handheld with the BMPCC? I've been a Lumix shooter for ages and am used to IBIS. I shoot handheld about 90% of the time.
So helpful as always!
Thanks jamie 🫡
You're so welcome!
I do not agree with the full frame thing, you can get GREAT images with an apsc or another sensor.. light/framing/story is what matters the most
To a certain degree. Because if that was the case everyone would just their iPhone. This camera is a tool for many jobs, just not all of them.
What was that lens again , the 35mm ?
@@JamieFenn THank you
No problem. Let me know if you have any other questions
Really looking forward to the Nexus (formfactor). Built in NDs are more important than autofocus, in my opinion. There are several amazing older cams on the market in this price range.
Built in nds would be great. Not a deal breaker.
for battery you can also get a DTAP adaptor and carry a absolutely massive battery in a backpack or on a belt and wire it to the camera.
True. But I like to keep my rigs as small as possible. That just seems like a headache
I have the 1 pocket6 k with the Tokina 14-20 and other vintage lens its a movie combo for me
My husband has used the DJI pro 3 and weight isn’t the factor. ❤
Are you talking about the Ronin RS3? The battery should last the same amount of time no matter what camera is on it as long as it’s balanced well.
Yes camera uses L mount lenses
i use an external npf battery (about 3hrs continous shooting) and a speedbooster for my old ef lenses with the 4k (costs about 1200) but if you can afford the 6k for double the price, its an even better deal. im fully sattisfied with my 4k so far though 😄 and a cheap gimbal for 300 (weebill s the weebills pro has even a follow focus included for only 100 more) solves the problem the internal giro function that the 6k has even better :)
I honestly don’t have an issue with battery life. But sounds like a sweet rig ya got!

Autofocus can have an impact on color, so there are parts where autofocus is not used. That's why Lumix insisted on contrast autofocus
Yea I don’t mind not having autofocus. But would be nice to have it when needed
The footage is SO insane to grade. Im in love with it. After grading it I don't want to go back to slog hahaha
@@JamieFenn You know, also the margin for error is lot bigger. I'm sure You're familliar with the Raw tab on the color page :)

I watched your video and I owned my bmpcc 6k pro for 3 years. You said it's only comes in L mount, that's not true. I have the ef mount on my camera, and I brought it that way. But I love the video.
I’m pretty sure I said mine came with an L mount. Not that it exclusively comes in L mount.

Awesome camera, are you still using it now days?

That’s so awesome to see such a great comment. I agree it’s about time I have a damn BM camera! Haha I love it. Can’t wait to make more videos with it
Apart from the low pass filter, the s5ii X can do all of this and more.
But this is without a doubt a sexy camera, and that footage just looked 🔥
How does the footage hold up against the 6k? All cameras are great now, but the 6k just feels really close to the Arri look to me.
Hey Jamie, great video as always, I wish I saw it before I bought my GH6.. But about they gyro data that it contains I belive you can use gyroflow software with much better use than Davinci. I use it for all of my gopro footage and its actually insane! You should definitely give it a try!
That’s another step I don’t wanna take haha. The one in DR does just fine for how I will use the camera for now.
Awesome camera review, I went thru the exact same thing previously from canon to sony and now hmmmm got me contemplating lol of switching again, is there a L mount adapter for e-mount sony lens with minimum focus breathing?
None mount to L mount as the flange is so short. I bought a sigma 24-70 lens and that’s my only one for the BMCC 6k. Selling my prime 35
hey the Lumix s5ii has most of these features but has great af has open gate 6k has proxy recording. cheaper
8:00 slow motion?
4k 60 is really all I need. I rarely shoot 120.
Easy to use bro 😉
woo, love the quality! great content and vfx.
Glad you like it!
@@JamieFenn I'm shooting 12 bit Braw on the Blackmagic video assist.
@@Henchproductions ohhh gotcha. But doesn't shoot 6k open gate right?
@@JamieFenn not to the video assist. It shoots 5.9k 16x9.
But it has better low light performance. Which to me is more important.
It's strange, because from what I understand, they have the same sensor.
@@JamieFenn I'm hoping BM reheases a camera this year that doesn't have that big bulky form factor that's easier to balance on a gimbal.
Canon eos r6 mark ii?
What about it?
Thanx for the review and also the info about this camera..I think ill wait for the Autofocus since im big on that and also a stabilizer. I own the studio version of Davinci but ive been shopping dor a camera to do more run and gun music videos type deal cinematic b-rolls and for that stabilizer and autofocus is pretty important. Great canera but at this time ill hold off on that. Thanx for letting me know how good this camera is and also whats missing and wish we had in this camera.
I plan to get the Pyxis and the DJI Lidar Pro and call it a day
Great camera.
Lumix S5iiX - "....Hold my beer"
@@WhyCallMeLordLordpeople are using Black Magic Video Assist with these Panasonic cameras to get 12 bit BRAW.
@@WhyCallMeLordLord what about the monitor brightness on the 4k? Do you shoot outside at all?
@@dangerrayy I have 7" AndyCine external monitors for each as it is a lot easier to pull focus on my aging eyes so I don't rely on the built in 5" monitor most of the time. I shoot indoors and out with short films, interviews, features & docs. I have 2 BMCC 6K's and 3 BMP4K's with 2 being dedicated gimbal cameras.
Honestly, if the pocket series had the same AF as Sony I think I'd be moving all my gear over to L-mount. Replace my a7iv with the S5IIx and my a7siii with the pocket 6k full frame
This camera is lighter than I thought it would be. People mention it being heavy but not the case to me
Jamie is that Arizona??
I just can't seem to understand why Blackmagic is refusing to make fully articulated screens!!
It would be really nice to be able to swing out the screen so we can see ourselves.... Hopefully in the next camera.
What about the Canon R5 C?
Totally different camera. A 1000 bucks more as well
Once they will have a proper auto focus, I will buy without thinking twice.
I’m joining 😂
Same!
Exactly
Totally understand. I'll make sure to put in the word with BM. It's not that bad without it though to be honest. Just depends on your use case for sure. Fingers crossed they make cameras in the future with it though. Let me talk with them. Ill see what I can do :)
Internal NDs, continuous AF, and a non-slanty body or weird form factor (just make a box Blackmagic) will make me switch in a heartbeat.
Insane
Thank you !!! You are the best !!!
I agree with all of this. I’ll put in a good word and hopefully we’ll see autofocus soon on new BMD cameras 😀
if autofocus is so important to you, why not use lidar? It's definitely cheaper than Burano and has been long time. I shot a few years ago on RS2 with lidar (3D-focus) for manual anamorphic lenses.
I have two other Sonys that have autofocus so I don’t care that much. But if this was my only cam, it would be nice to have it.
anyone know what song is used during the starting sequence ?
God! I’d hate to add up my journey to where I am now lmao!
😂😂😂
I bought the pocket full frame but resold it 2 weeks later. As as former pocket 6k pro user I was very disappointed about the low light capabilities!
This isn’t the pocket this is the new 6k FF
@@JamieFenn sorry i meant the 6k FF. For me its still a pocket cinema camera :)
Did some filming tonight in low light. We’ll see how it performed
@@JamieFenn how did it perform?
Once noise reduction was applied it looked as clean as my Sonys. (The Sonys have built in noise reduction) so it makes sense
Hey men¡ I have the ZVE1, could you please compare both of them ? :D
Thanks¡¡
Maybe :)
Is this camera netflix approved?
@@FocalFlow no. 👍
If you’re a beginner just starting out, and you want to buy this camera and still want auto focus, get a DJI Ronin RS3 with Lidar kit.
I second that!!
It's a cinema camera, it's not supposed to come with autofocus.
The canon c70 has it..
never really saw cameras as whats most important.. its all about the lenses in my opinion i mean come on directors literally making movies with phones now.. lenses and lighting are the only thing you need to study.. budget cameras are not the problem
You missed the point. Ultimately if you’re going to spend money on a “cinema camera” this is the best valued camera out there.
The image is great tho, no doubts abt it.
Agreed. It makes you very particular about how you film and how long you film. And I like that. It has a carbon fiber composite which I like. Build quietly seems to be the same as my other cameras but I haven’t owned it as long so I’ll need to do an update video this year.
Glad I’ve been using my dji pocket… egos need big crap.
I bet it’s perfect for what you film. No need to be a dick.
@@JamieFenn hahaha.
What lens are you suggesting for $1100?
It was a median price range option. But when I typed it out I had the sigma art 24-70 in mind. Link is I the description under camera A. (I actually bought it and will be arriving today!)
Ive always wanted this camera.. but the autofocus is a dealbreaker for me.
The greatest irony is that the 80D had incredible, world class auto focus in video mode for the time and this camera doesn't even have continuous auto focus 😅
Everything is relative I guess.
It did have video feature’s but it was extremely limited compared to what was out on the market at the time for the price. And yes this camera doesn’t have autofocus, but it’s comparing apples to oranges.
@@JamieFenn i completely agree. But there were way better ways to describe shortcomings of the 80D.
Yea I know he’s the reason I bought it. For basic camera work, yes it’s a great camera. But now I’d rather use my iPhone instead of that camera
Starting editing directly from the ssd... no back up ? Dangerous !
I only edit on SSD’s. Been working for years.
@@JamieFenn ok, it works, but you need a back up... just in case !
True.
I was also traped in that deep rabbit hole called „cinematic“ once you realise its all in the lightnig of the scene and atmosphere..you will forget about the camera…just my two cents🥳
Absolutely 💯 agree… but there’s just something about BM cameras that feels good.
those titles man...i thought i will see any fancy camera whatever and it was just the bmck 6k...
Sorry to disappoint 😂
Lol 5d mark 2 was amazing i dont see how 80d wasnt good. Of course we may need more but there are dolks who have done wonders with 5d2 and 7d1
It's a great camera, but I felt very limited as a creator for the things I wanted to do with the camera. Starting off with color correcting and grading. There was no wiggle room with rec 709 straight out of camera...
What about the z8
Why is he adding up the prices when he already sold all of his gear why not subtract the gears he sold and add the gear he bought 1:26 . just for the content only???
Fair, knock off a couple thousand...
3 main problems of this camera:
1. Crazy Rolling Shutter (Sometimes not fixable in post with gyro data)
2. No ProRes, only BRAW
3. Huge file sizes
+ No internal ND filters
Honestly- none of that matters to me as a filmmaker or creates problems with my workflow
Zcams use the same senors
Haha no they don’t..
How come no one talks about Final Cut Pro anymore?
love my 6kp
I'm sure you didn't feel like this when you were buying all the previous gear. That stabilization was awful 😆
Not sure what you mean?
Sigma fp is the king !!!!
