Agreed. It's so stupid that Microsoft only allows users to upgrade their controllers to a rechargeable battery pack BUT NOT officially allow users to upgrade their internal storage (IT CAN be done actually if you know how to use cloning software to clone HDD data to a SSD).
I threw a 2TB evo into my PS4Pro when it first released. Love the load times you shoulda threw some Square Enix titles in there to test. Load screen is literally just a blink
I put a 512Gb SSD into my 1st Gen PS4 from the get go because I knew how slow HDD are compared to SSDs. Playing FF14 online was awesome, Load times for sure were faster than some of the others playing online. Had a 120Gb SSD on my super slim PS3 but that only helps in certain ways, still, HDDs should be more for storage(old tech now), SSDs more for reading/writing/speed & other efficiencies/improvements that help so much.
@Naoto it WAS so expensive and if i saw no speed benefit, i def woulda took it out and put in one of my PCs but thats not the case. So not wasteful i feel
Just a quick heads up for anyone that wishes to be a long term PS4 user still I recommend that you install and download all your games to a big internal or external SSD if you have loads of games in your PS library because there could be a case where PS4 games are no longer available to download. Seems like an overkill but, worth it if you can afford like a huge 8TB SSD. I will lol when I can afford one
I actually used 1TB 860 QVO drive, mostly because it was cheaper and still much faster than the original HD. This was an early PS4 which was heavily used.
Hey mate, thanks for the video! Just got myself an EVO as well and it all went without problems. Would have done it far earlier if i knew it`s that easy. :) Now i just need to wait until Iceborne is installed again to test those dope new loading times.
is there also a noticable difference between hdd and ssd when scrolling through the ps4 menu, going into the ps store, library etc? for me, the worst issue is insanely slow menu on ps4.
We just revived a PS4 Slim from its slow ass HDD. Let’s just say, the SSD shocked both me and my buddy on how fast it ate through a completely new OS from the USB.
I notice in some videos on TH-cam that for those who are upgrading their hard drive that are missing a few key steps to update the Software. I had to find out this myself, that you need to create a folder labeled PS4/UPDATE/ with the PS4UPDATE.PUP file for re-installation from PlayStation website in order for it to load the software correctly. After that, I am now able to restore my PS4. Having to upgrade my HDD to 2TB SSD was the best decision I made. Load time for games will be more smooth and better now. Great video, and always of fan of Samsung products!
5:01 For those, who tried to read... Boost Mode: Experience improved gameplay, including higher frame rates, for some games that were released before the introduction of PS4 Pro (CUH-2000 series). Turn this off if you experience unexpected behavior during gameplay.
This was very useful, plan to do exactly all that today. When it comes to loading time comparison, not sure if less than half is correct, though. Did you compare loading time of the same positions? Fast travel doesn't last same amount of loading time on different locations. Loading in a city may take 45sec while loading on some open plains may take 30sec or indoors 25sec, so I hope your comparison of loading checkpoint matched ;)) Anyway, thanks for step-by-step on how to swap HDD to SSD and restore backed up data. Cheers!
@@zyawillis8040 it's amazing since the SSD in PS3 acts as virtual ram, and even better if the SSD has a large RAM cache in the memory controller, smooths out frames and load times.
A potential reason why horizon zero dawn loaded so much quicker compared to the rest is due to the high-speed cache on the SSD. Since it was a fresh install more of the game would have been still stored there. Loading another game and resetting would put all the games on a more natural playing field. Not saying it the video needs an update or anything but just an FYI.
Was on the fence about upgrading my PS4 pro with an SSD knowing that the system cannot take full advantage of SSD speed due to hardware limitations. After countless hours of research and TH-cam videos, I finally made the jump and threw in a 1tb Samsung 860 evo. I can confirm that the load time improvements mentioned in the video above match each title and at times even come in a second or two faster. The system is snappier and more responsive and rendering issues in some games have even improved. Overall, a good choice with slight improvements. Completely smokes the OG PS4 when comparing load times together and is a good way to get a little taste of the future with the PS5 just around the corner.
@@ZLFT Apply a better thermal paste than generic ones. My PS4 slim still sounded like a jet even after recently cleaned so I bought a better thermal paste and it didn't sound loud anymore.
I need you to know something. Because of you I made this decision🤔. I know not what I do but because of what I do it's all because of you🤫. I got the same solid-state drive that you suggested for my PS4 Pro.... But here is the problem... I don't know exactly how to say this but... Okay fine I think I'll just come out with it and tell you exactly what I need to tell you... My PS4 Pro is much faster now. much quicker graphical rendering thanks to you,... My load times are super fast!! Woooohoooooo ☺️
I would like to see a comparison between the QVO and EVO SSD's. I was under the impression that consoles won't get the full benefit out of an SSD due to the limitations on CPU. I would say that the QVO with 300 odd mb/s transfer would get similar results to the more expensive EVO.
the biggest bottleneck is the horrendously slow hard drive within the PS4 console. That's why even just putting games on an external mechanical hard drive will load them faster, because even USB 2.0 speeds will load faster than the internal drive.
i actually called Samsung before upgrading. i needed to know the difference. in short, the EVO is geared for read & write. the QVO is geared for storage.
For everyone reading this, look PS4 Pro SSD guides online as I've just learned that the PS4 Pros architecture/hardware can only make use of 220MB per second. So they fully recommend ONLY the entry level SSDs. They are already faster than what the PS4 Pro can make use of, so there's no need to spend extra on faster SSDs. They get their benefits on PC architecture/hardware. Definitely worth the £99 by the looks of things!
you should of showed the steps to download the new OS i downloaded the wrong file and teared my hair out for hours trying to figure it out, you have to download the file for a clean install i didnt check properly
Yes and No, you could have slow loadtimes till PS5 comes out or you can have faster load times now lol I guess something to last you a while... You don't have to get a Samsung 860. 1TB is cheap nowadays. I sold my 960GB Toshiba drive to a friend and he put it in his PS4 Pro just fine, I sold it to him for $50 lol but besides the point, you can use any brand SSD, it doesnt have to be Samsung if you're concerned about price.
@@Specialist7 No & no Although a ssd will work in a ps4, The ps4 doesn't have the capability to benefit from the faster read/write speeds of a ssd Btw my ps4 pro has an 860 1tb Samsung SSD inside atm
@Lina Morgana They wont be using SATA SSD but both the PS5 and Series X will be using NVME SSD so much more speed and bandwidth than regular so while like all computer parts will have revision, spec-wise it's pretty beefed up so it'll all depend on the software from here on out.
@@outlawgmr Even if you're going SATA 2 vs SATA 3, going from HDD 5400/7200rpm to SSD will make a good difference. Check this video and others as well as reviews online of countless users shaving off a good amount of time off their loadtimes. It will also depend on the game as some games have their loadtimes embedded onto the loading screen as previous generation consoles have shown when replaced with SSDs. Not only does SSD reduces load times but it also reduces some noise and heat. Even some SSHD shows some benefits over a regular HDD as once loaded a few times on cache it will load a little bit faster. Now PS5 may be a different story as it will use NVME SSD as opposed to SATA SSD and then once developers stop hard coding loadtimes onto loading screens then it can load as fast as PC games #pcmasterrace but if you're not seeing the benefit of an SSD over an HDD on your PS4 then thats unfortunate. So to answer the previous question, is there much point when the PS5 is around the corner? Yes for better load times and enjoying your games faster. If its going to cost you an arm and a leg then no, its best to save up for the PS5 when it comes end of the year? also expect it to be priced slightly higher than last gens MSRP as the specs are slightly beefier... well.. by beefier the performance should be like last years AMD Zen 2 and NVME pushed by PCIE4, should be interesting though.

@Follow the howl I was guesstimating. I didn't benchmark but I found the times to be much quicker in many games. The process of doing it is easy and it helps greatly with load times. PS5 doesn't look like it's going to be available anytime soon so may as well make the best of it! Now if I could just fix my loud ass fan.
Idk if I should throw that kind of money on a console that’s on its last year of relevance. I need a 2TB and its around $330. Considering the PS5 will already use SSD and will be backwards compatible with PS4 games, I’m not sure if it makes sense to do that.
I feel at this time (PS5 release upcoming) It does not make sense to buy a huge 2TB one for the sole purpose of putting it in to a PS4. Here is what I did: I had a 250GB 850 EVO SSD laying around. Thats what i put into my PS4 Pro and were I installed the Playstation Firmware + a few games. The boost in perfomance IS indeed significant and really impressed me. Playstation menu e.g. is much smoother. The 1TB Playstation HDD i then used as an external drive.
Doing this upgrade today... got the new Xbox and the SSD speeds make the PS4 Pro seem pedestrian. No chance of finding a P55 in stock anytime soon, so getting a 2TB SSD delivered this very afternoon!
Just got my 1st paystation4 pro, got the Crucial ssd to load, I am 70 yo, I can use all the help I can get. I want to just slip it in and use a ubs to finish it up, but having hard time using usb. I would think it would much simpler to do this operation then the new sss is empty, the hhd has the info, why cant they just transfer one to the other.
When you format the USB (Make sure it has nothing important on it, because it will be erased) make sure to format it with FAT32. Also You need to create two folders in all caps. Then you need to place the update file that you download into the correct folder. It's not too bad to do. If you want to backup and restore your saved games and data then you need an additional external USB drive with enough storage. You can do the backup under settings, then restore when you have the new hard drive installed with the new operating system.
The reason for that is the lack of TRIM support. By overprovisioning with a larger drive you go longer before hitting write slow downs from write amplification and trimming. Many claim "modern SSDs have garbage collection" yes they do, but if they aren't filesystem aware they won't know what is garbage. It's a bit like having the ability to defragment, but never using it
This was good video as you brought up the issue of having to reinstall the ps4 software when changing the hd other ones I've watched didn't mention this, I know it might be obvious to some but not to everyone. So well worth the watch. 👍

My ps is so slow right now and every few minutes/hours it tells me “the data is corrupted please restart your PlayStation”, do you think I have to replace my harddrive to fix this issue or is there other solutions to this problem?
try booting up in safe mode and rebuilding database. turn it completely off. press and hold the power button until you hear the 2nd beep. hardwire your controller and go to the 4th option I believe. rebuild data base might say it’ll take 3hrs but it’s usually a few minutes or so. that’s how long mine took on a ps4 with stock HDD. it sped up my ps4 by quite a bit. I recommend doing it at least once a week. hope it helps

Another benefit is no moving parts means far less heat so hopefully allows the PS4 Pro to run cooler.
Ya hard drives don't really produce much heat it might make it run hotter if it can do more not waiting on the hard drive
also ZERO spinning disk noise - that was something my friend I installed an SSD in his ps4 noticed immediately - the only noise you hear when under load is the incredibly obnoxious 'jet fan' as I like to call it lol

It adds up a lot over time though. Kind of a waste of 100 bucks but if you play a lot its pretty nice.
Always loved the ease of upgrading internal storage on PS, Xbox is a train wreck if trying to upgrade internally.
Agreed.
It's so stupid that Microsoft only allows users to upgrade their controllers to a rechargeable battery pack BUT NOT officially allow users to upgrade their internal storage (IT CAN be done actually if you know how to use cloning software to clone HDD data to a SSD).

I actually have it in my ps3 and ps4 and I am happy on how they perform to be honest

Isn’t it worse for downloaded games on ps3?
Just a quick heads up for anyone that wishes to be a long term PS4 user still
I recommend that you install and download all your games to a big internal or external SSD if you have loads of games in your PS library because there could be a case where PS4 games are no longer available to download. Seems like an overkill but, worth it if you can afford like a huge 8TB SSD. I will lol when I can afford one
I just upgraded mine. It works great with an SSD. I upgraded to a 2TB drive loving the extra storage.
Very important factor is the enormous improvement while using the ps4 menu for example closing apps an opening other menus.
I actually used 1TB 860 QVO drive, mostly because it was cheaper and still much faster than the original HD. This was an early PS4 which was heavily used.
Your doubly smart because the With the PS4 pro hardware setup you won’t see any difference from the QVO drive and the normal 860
Eric Hall is that really so?
Hey mate, thanks for the video! Just got myself an EVO as well and it all went without problems. Would have done it far earlier if i knew it`s that easy. :) Now i just need to wait until Iceborne is installed again to test those dope new loading times.

Did you need to format the SSD prior to installing it in the ps4?

When it comes to loading time comparison, not sure if less than half is correct, though. Did you compare loading time of the same positions? Fast travel doesn't last same amount of loading time on different locations. Loading in a city may take 45sec while loading on some open plains may take 30sec or indoors 25sec, so I hope your comparison of loading checkpoint matched ;)) Anyway, thanks for step-by-step on how to swap HDD to SSD and restore backed up data. Cheers!

Get a PS4.. your living under a rock.

Evo is better qvo has bad speeds
i actually called Samsung before upgrading. i needed to know the difference. in short, the EVO is geared for read & write. the QVO is geared for storage.
Hmmmm got me intrigued. I'm glad the SSD's are not too bad on the pricing. I was expecting it to be so much more.
I had no idea u could do this if I knew I would've done this years ago 🤦🏻♂️
Right wtf man I can't believe I'm just finding out about this 😥
Dude Thank you, I'm gonna do the very same. My xbox series s is super fast but now its time to Focus on upgrading my PS4.
if I have my games on an external hard drive, will replacing the internal get the same results?
Keep games on external ssd because you won’t have to reload them if something happened to the console

Is there much point when the PS5 is just around the corner?....I mean an ssd drive still isn’t cheap, a Samsung 860 QVO is £100 for a 1TB drive,
Yes and No, you could have slow loadtimes till PS5 comes out or you can have faster load times now lol I guess something to last you a while...

No & no
Although a ssd will work in a ps4,
The ps4 doesn't have the capability to benefit from the faster read/write speeds of a ssd
Btw my ps4 pro has an
860 1tb Samsung SSD inside atm

Hi! Hope you see this- Sony/PS4 recommends backing up data to a storage device with at least 2 times the amount your original hard drive has? What did you use to back up? I know you eventually put it on your ssd, but what do you recommend? Or what do others in comments recommend?
Trust me, the upgrade is wroth it. I did it myself with a Samsung 860 1TB and it is SO MUCH FASTER. Ghost of Tsushima is like 8 seconds to fast travel across the map lol. Worth it do it.
Here is what I did:
I had a 250GB 850 EVO SSD laying around.
And the ps4 is still a beast of a console, until more ps5 games come out then it’ll be 100% worth it imo
Is this a joke? Not trying to be mean, but I just saw a lot of mistakes like ubs, sss, hhd, and what you said about transferring info to the other.
Damn, thanks man :D this is absolutely amazing! Been trying to get a PS5 ever since they released but no luck. This is absolutely amazing!
For everyone else who has upgraded theirs- what size device did you do the backup to? Sony recommends 2x the storage of the hdd you’re replacing?
The reason for that is the lack of TRIM support. By overprovisioning with a larger drive you go longer before hitting write slow downs from write amplification and trimming. Many claim "modern SSDs have garbage collection" yes they do, but if they aren't filesystem aware they won't know what is garbage. It's a bit like having the ability to defragment, but never using it
This was good video as you brought up the issue of having to reinstall the ps4 software when changing the hd other ones I've watched didn't mention this, I know it might be obvious to some but not to everyone. So well worth the watch. 👍

Yes, your hard drive is failing
try booting up in safe mode and rebuilding database. turn it completely off. press and hold the power button until you hear the 2nd beep. hardwire your controller and go to the 4th option I believe. rebuild data base might say it’ll take 3hrs but it’s usually a few minutes or so. that’s how long mine took on a ps4 with stock HDD. it sped up my ps4 by quite a bit. I recommend doing it at least once a week. hope it helps
