Thanks! But please correct your title. You are upgrading a PS4 PRO! Both the PS4 and PS4 SLIM have different HDD access, and neither have rear USB ports. I'm sending you $10 thanks tho because your video still made me realise that the PS4 Slim at least also blocks regular USB sticks from being electrically-inserted - as in you think it's in but the PS4 cover is blocking the USB cover from letting the contacts insert far enough. Absolutely ridiculous and I bet many have thought their PS4s were bricked because of this. I don't know about the PS4 [original] but with the Slim you have no option but to get a USB HUB / extension cable / skinny stick. I just happened to have a skinny stick laying around, but 98% of USB sticks will not fit!!!
Thanks so much! Yeah I upgraded a ps4 pro but the same general process applies for the pro, regular, slim, etc. That said, yeah the fitment of the USB might vary. I'm glad the video helped you!
Thanks, really helpful video!! I only have one question. If I'm using an external HDD for extra storage for my games, after I start using the internal SSD, the games inside the external HDD are going to run from there? Or is the internal SSD the one that will run all the system and games no matter where they are located? If do upgrade to SSD i should stop using the external HDD for games to profit from the SSD upgrade? I'm not sure how that works :(
I'm glad it's helpful! The games run from wherever they are installed. I would recommend getting a fairly large internal (this 2tb is only $120 - amzn.to/3STKw2M). And if you need it, an external SSD. Otherwise you wouldn't see the gains you'd expect with the internal SSD and an external HDD.
I am going to do this today with the same exact hard drive the Samsung evo 870 but I got the 4 tb , Amazon prime day did me well. I have a secondary ps4 slim with a sandisc ssd 2tb I upgraded 3 years ago and have a huge ps4 library so I want to stay within the console play with best performance among console line.
I put in a 2TB SSD on my PS4 Pro and at first it didn't work. Then I realized I downloaded the "install" file instead of the reinstall file. Then it worked.

Happy to help. Backing up was in this video. I used a USB drive. Just select the items you want to back up. I decided to just re-download a lot of apps instead of backing them up.
Don't compare with an online game. Because the connection speed and server will be a big factor. Try using an offline game like Witcher 3 that boots a long time.. no issue with internet connection or server loading..
The console reinstallation file is pretty small, so basically any USB drive will be big enough. That said, if you want to use the same USB drive to back up other things, you can get bigger ones. But even a small 16 gb one would be big enough for just the console reinstallation file.

Honestly yeah you can back up your data. Personally I'd just get a 128 gb usb drive and just use that for the main stuff, then restore from backup your games and game save data.
Can I use an (old) 1TB HDD for just backing up the games? And for the USB-stick and SSD, can I just buy any of them or do I have to look into some specifications to work on a PS4?
A HDD should work fine for backing up. Regarding the USB and SSD, any USB should work fine as long as it's a high enough capacity for what you're wanting. For the SSD, you want to make sure you get one that is the right size. I have a couple linked in the description that are the correct size and are all around great - good price, highly rated, etc

How have you found the 870 evo so far?? I wanted to upgrade with the 860 evo, but cannot find anymore.. I have heard that the 870 evo have been having a lot of issues and failing really fast on people??
Question about profiles and losing data. I have my Main profile for me, and I added a few local profiles for my kids. Will I loose the stuff (saves and trophies) from my the kids profiles if they are just local profiles?
Hmm that's a good question. I haven't personally tested that. Playstation's site talks about syncing trophies with the PSN. There is a note though on Playstation's website stating "Please note, users who have never signed in to PlayStation™Network (PSN) can restore saved data to only the original PS4 console that was backed up. To restore saved data to another PS4 console, you must sign in to PSN before backing up data." Since the new drive makes it like a new PS4, I think it could cause an issue. Check this - www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps4-back-up-and-restore-with-external-storage/
Thank you for the video! I have a USB docking station and I was wondering if I could just do the backup directly to a new drive in my docking station and then install it in the PS4? It would save a step.
Hi, great video! I followed the same steps but for some reason I can't get the controller to move to the "Ok" option on the "Connect a USB storage device" screen though it does recognize when I press enter or back. Any tips?
@@TechnicallyJeff yes :/ troubleshooting this has been tough. My USB indicates it is fully inserted(light indicator on USB) but I'm going to try a slimmer one in hopes that maybe it isn't fully inserted
Hi my ps4 pro harddisk make flickering sound and I think it is gone . I connected to pc but it won’t recognise any drive . So I believe I have to do new fresh installation without back up correct? With no back up . Thanks
I bought the same SSD but it doesn't work in my PS4 Pro. It wouldn't let me install the system software from the USB flash drive i copied the ps4update file and it wouldn't install. I even press the power button for like 3 or 5 seconds and click on initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) and that didn't work either. I was gonna see if my games will have faster load times i'm very disappointed in this SSD.
Hey Jeff, was wondering if I've screwed myself. I purchased a 500 GB SSD, as I'm in Canada, and spent $90 on it and realized I can't restore as I've got over 600 GB to restore. Can I put my original 1 TB hardrive back into console, and redo the process? Thanks
It should improve those speeds since the read/write off the drive is much faster. I just had a pretty big update to mw3 and it copied it in much less than an hour.
can you tell me about 1 (for the backup USB, what is the format? FAT32, NTFS, exFAT?) and 2 (did i need to backup the game (not a game data) ? can i install after replace to SSD, cause waste too much time)
USE the D-Pad !!!!After hours of messing with this, I could not get the playstation to even try to accept my USB, I had #7. as X options but could not click ok...just cancel. Analog stick wouldn't move over. I tired reinstalling to USB over and over making sure I had UPDATE and everything spelled correctly. FML D-Pad right arrow would have saved me literal hours
Hi i just bought the ssd but was wondering the life time of the ssd in general? Am i going to need to replace it anytime soon? Also i bought a flash drive with fat 36 format and 3.1 usb. Is that ok?
SSDs generally last a while if you get a reputable brand like Samsung. It depends on usage, but generally 5-8 years is expected. And yeah fat32 should be fine.
If im fine with my current save gb amount do i need a big external or wont matter? 😅basically when using SSD does it download all game from already installed or acts independent
The external won't really speed anything up since it has to be transferred over usb. If you get a SSD internal, it will speed up load times since everything is saved there. And you can back up games that are already installed or just reinstall them. I reinstalled them to save time on the backup process.
I took PS4 Pro apart--cleaned out thoroughly with an air can as well m, it was nit super dusty or dirty but no fan noise at all --but now COD freezes on me on and off-upon turning it on, and here and there while the game is on, character freezes then it straightens out in about 30 seconds again…..but when I try to turn off PS4, it does not turn itself off now…I have to unplug it to turn it off….should I just get a PS5 slim and be over with it.
@@TechnicallyJeffno I just ordered today m…the sane one you gave us on your channel, cones in Wednesday….i thought all I had to do, is pull out the hard drive install the new Samsung and wait for load up. I will send this video to myself…wish me luck please 👍🏽
Hi there. So my ssd came today. I installed it, chose reinstall, named it PS4, created another folder UPDATE, then copied the file to UPDATE, and called it PS4UPDATE.PUP put ps4 in safe mode and chose option 7. Then error message its corrupt showed up. Tried a different thumb drive this time it said file not found. Any suggestions? It would be appreciated. I don't need to plug external hd where my backup is do I? Thanks
Did you download the console reinstallation file? And when you say you named it PS4, did you rename your thumb drive PS4 or did you create a folder in the thumb drive like I did and name it PS4?
So there is lack of detail on the files for usb. You say create folder called ps4 then inside that folder create one called update, then you left a big detail out… inside that file create another folder called updateps4.pup … is there 3 folders? Or what? Lack of detail. Im lost on that portion ive tried 100xs and this will not work for me.
I just got the same exact SSD, plugged it in and tried installing the PS software but it failed. Do i have to format the SSD first? It's basically stuck at initializing and never loading the installation itself. Any idea?
Obviously, you always want a back up, but certainly you understand what a clone is? If I have to explain this to you, you should change your name to just Jeff. @@TechnicallyJeff
question if you're starting with a "blank" PS4 Pro do I need to back anything up or can I just go ahead with the installation? if not is a 128GB memory stick enough to hold the basic OS? figured I would ask before starting anything.

Concerning the online game loading, I think your console has to wait for the other players to have their slow HDD PS4 to be loaded.
I think that is a part of it. Though I have been playing ranked lately and it loads into the matches REALLY fast. Like within 5-10 seconds.
Correction, as of COD:CW, everyone loads in at similar speeds and it just waits for the last person, so if someone is slow, everyone waits.
Ah interesting

Just wanted to confirm this will not update the Firmware correct?
Correct
thank you so much
I'm glad it's helpful!
Do i download the ps4 console file to the same usb drive as I backed up my data? Or a different USB.
You should be able to. Just make sure to select the right file.
Nope did not work, I did install a new Samsung SSD I only play 1 game so I will connect ps4 pro without the software and go from there
What didn't work?
@@TechnicallyJeff the installation from the laptop to the usb
What did it do when you tried?
@@TechnicallyJeff ps4 comes on but the screen is black and it is asking me to insert the USB…the screen says safe mode…because I installed the SSD and it is blank
Oh you didn't install the update software
DONT FORGET AFTER INSTALLING THE OS SYSTEM BACK AND YOUR IN SETUP TO REMOVE THAT USB BEFORE RESTARTING AGAIN TO AVOID CORRUPTION
Oh yeah?
@TechnicallyJeff never know people might leave it there and when they update and restart the Playstation might corrupt windows again
Yeah probably smart
Thanks for the video i do the format and everything en my flash drive with a old Android phone😂😂😂👍🏼👍🏼 i dont need a PC or Mack
Oh nice haha
Thanks ❤
Happy to help!
Sorry I'm a bit late here, but was wondering if replacing with an SSD is going to prolong the life of system? The shorter load times nice and all. Thanks for the help.
It should. It runs cooler and has less moving parts to fail, unlike the hard drive.
@@TechnicallyJeff that's enough for me. Thanks for the reply, you just got yourself a new subscriber. 😊
Just wondering if 1 Gb is enough to dl the software?
Thank you!
The reinstallation software is right around 1gb. You might need at least 2gb to be safe. Honestly I'd recommend just using a usb drive.
How have you found the 870 evo so far?? I wanted to upgrade with the 860 evo, but cannot find anymore.. I have heard that the 870 evo have been having a lot of issues and failing really fast on people??
Oh really? Mine has been great. No issues whatsoever. It has a lot of good reviews too.
Can you use a 32GB USB stick to back up the PS4 Pro?
As long as you don't have too much data
Hey Jeff,
What do you use to record your videos?
Generally my S24 Ultra (S23 Ultra at the time of this video)
@@TechnicallyJeff oh wow the capture quality is great
Yeah it's great
Question about profiles and losing data.
It works perfect, I have 8 profiles in my ps4 and the restoration was with the profiles too.
@Eliocall awesome glad to hear it
I have one question can i upgrade my ps 4 pro internal storage from 1TB to 8TB? Because i have an 8TB SSD
I'm not sure an 8tb ssd will fit inside. Do you know the dimensions?
Yes 8 tb is the maximum size storage and it will work if it's a 2.5 inch form factor hoped that helped you.
As long as it's not too thick
Thank you for the video! I have a USB docking station and I was wondering if I could just do the backup directly to a new drive in my docking station and then install it in the PS4? It would save a step.
I believe you can. I haven't tested that, but I have heard of people doing similar things.
Thank you for the reply. I'm going to try it. @@TechnicallyJeff
Good luck!
Hi, great video! I followed the same steps but for some reason I can't get the controller to move to the "Ok" option on the "Connect a USB storage device" screen though it does recognize when I press enter or back. Any tips?
Hmm I'm not sure why it would recognize it when pressing enter or back but not moving it. You have it plugged in right?
@@TechnicallyJeff yes :/ troubleshooting this has been tough. My USB indicates it is fully inserted(light indicator on USB) but I'm going to try a slimmer one in hopes that maybe it isn't fully inserted
Good luck I hope it works
Thanks this helped.
I'm glad it was helpful!
Hello. I just swapped out my harddrive and everything seemed to work just fine until after the initialization now im stuck on a black screen
Hmm you installed the console reinstallation software?
thanks jeff your video was very help full i have now replaced my new hard drive in my ps4 thank you for your help
Awesome, happy to help!
What are some well priced ssds that are compatible with the PS4 pro?
There are a lot on Amazon. Personally I recommend the Samsung I linked in the description.
Will this help with loading graphical textures fast in Warzone? That's the biggest problem I have with Warzone PS4.
Yeah mine definitely load faster.
Hi my ps4 pro harddisk make flickering sound and I think it is gone . I connected to pc but it won’t recognise any drive . So I believe I have to do new fresh installation without back up correct? With no back up . Thanks
Yeah it doesn't sound like a back up would be successful. You can redownload games and game save data.
Can you use the extended storage to install the update file?
Extended storage as in a portable drive?
I'm guessing that it would also save the profiles on the console?
Yes it does
Will this process work with the ps4 or it’s just for the ps4pro? Thanks
It's essentially the same process for both
Can I use the same usb drive for both the backup and the update software?
Yes, I did
How many GB are you left with after installing the 1tb ssd?
Good question. IIRC around 940 gb or so, but I'm not 100% sure.
Oh wow this is a very common SSD. You sure you didn't miss any steps? Everything is named correctly and in the right folder?
Hey Jeff, was wondering if I've screwed myself. I purchased a 500 GB SSD, as I'm in Canada, and spent $90 on it and realized I can't restore as I've got over 600 GB to restore. Can I put my original 1 TB hardrive back into console, and redo the process? Thanks
Oh that sucks. Yeah you should be able to do that. Maybe get a 2tb to be safe.
Will doing this upgrade speed up download speeds? Specifically copying? No matter the file size my console nearly takes an hour to copy a game update
It should improve those speeds since the read/write off the drive is much faster. I just had a pretty big update to mw3 and it copied it in much less than an hour.
can you tell me about
1 (for the backup USB, what is the format? FAT32, NTFS, exFAT?) and
2 (did i need to backup the game (not a game data) ? can i install after replace to SSD, cause waste too much time)
FAT32 or exFAT. And yeah if you can reinstall the game, that's fine. I did that for most of my games. I just redownloaded them.
Can a SSD be installed in a PS4 without going online or backing up data?
No you need to install the console reinstallation software on the ssd. If you put it in without software it won't work.
Do I need two USB sticks or I can use my external hard drive for the back up file and the system software
You can use just one. I used one usb drive.
Oh really? That's frustrating. Sounds like you got it to work with the D-Pad though?
video was perfect, steps worked exactly as needed once I got to the ok button.@@TechnicallyJeff
Awesome I'm glad!
After switching to ssd, online game are still playable?
Yeah I re-downloaded mine
Hi i just bought the ssd but was wondering the life time of the ssd in general? Am i going to need to replace it anytime soon? Also i bought a flash drive with fat 36 format and 3.1 usb. Is that ok?
SSDs generally last a while if you get a reputable brand like Samsung. It depends on usage, but generally 5-8 years is expected. And yeah fat32 should be fine.
@@TechnicallyJeff sorry yeah I mean fat32 lol. Thank you for answering
I figured 😀 glad to help!
How big should the usb be? Is 128gb enogh for the files plus software?
Yeah that's big enough if you download the games from the cloud
I took PS4 Pro apart--cleaned out thoroughly with an air can as well m, it was nit super dusty or dirty but no fan noise at all --but now COD freezes on me on and off-upon turning it on, and here and there while the game is on, character freezes then it straightens out in about 30 seconds again…..but when I try to turn off PS4, it does not turn itself off now…I have to unplug it to turn it off….should I just get a PS5 slim and be over with it.
Hmm that's weird having those issues. Have you replaced the hard drive with a SSD?
@@TechnicallyJeffno I just ordered today m…the sane one you gave us on your channel, cones in Wednesday….i thought all I had to do, is pull out the hard drive install the new Samsung and wait for load up. I will send this video to myself…wish me luck please 👍🏽
Ahh gotcha. Hopefully the SSD fixes it. Good luck! Mine is working great still 😀
Yes we are same EVO 870 subs for u
Sweet!
do you know if this works for the regular ps4?
Yes it does
In that folder you put the update.pup file you download from the Playstation site
Sir did it increase the fps too?
I don't think so. But it will help with heat which can cause drops in fps I suppose
thanks
Glad to help!
Can you do the same thing with a regular ps4 (not pro)?
Yes you can. It's a great upgrade.
It is also possible to clone the hard drive with a docking station.
Yeah? I hadn't thought of that.
Does anyone know if it is possible?@@TechnicallyJeff
Oh I thought you were saying it is possible. I'm not sure honestly. I hadn't thought of that route.
Maybe I was unclear because I translate with Google Translate.
@@TechnicallyJeff
possibly - sorry I couldn't provide more info.
I just got the same exact SSD, plugged it in and tried installing the PS software but it failed. Do i have to format the SSD first? It's basically stuck at initializing and never loading the installation itself. Any idea?
Hmm you could try formatting it first. You downloaded the console reinstallation file right? Not the regular file?
@@TechnicallyJeff Yeah it's the PS4UPDATE PUP file. Guess i'll try formatting on my PC first. Thanks for the speedy answer!
Good luck! Let me know how it goes
Is there a way to just clone or image the ps hd straight onto the new SSD...that would be nice
Not that I'm aware of unfortunately.
Yes you can ... omg!
@@TechnicallyJeff
Yeah? Clone it completely with no issues and have the PS4 recognize it? If that's possible and not difficult, why isn't that the recommend method? lol
Obviously, you always want a back up, but certainly you understand what a clone is? If I have to explain this to you, you should change your name to just Jeff. @@TechnicallyJeff
Haha I do. I just don't see people cloning PS4 hard drives to SSDs. Usually it's a method like I shared. Why wouldn't cloning it be the preferred way?
Can i downgrade my PS4's firmware while changing the HDD to an SSD??
If you have an older reinstallation file, I don't see why not.
question if you're starting with a "blank" PS4 Pro do I need to back anything up or can I just go ahead with the installation? if not is a 128GB memory stick enough to hold the basic OS? figured I would ask before starting anything.
I think you'd be good to go with the installation. And yeah I think that's way more than enough from what I remember.
thanks! one less step makes it easier. already put the PS4 reinstall folder on my 32GB stick and used your process which is easy to follow 🙂
Awesome glad to help!
Why not just clone the drive. It should work without any hussle. No updating no backups necessary.
Some people have talked about doing that but that's not the recommended process by playstation. I personally haven't ever tried that
