    This was an awesome fan film! It was absolutely true to Star Trek and Voyager. I loved the sets! But also the uniforms were very accurate, I liked the EVA suits which I think were a lot of work. The acting was very good. I found especially the Captain to be very believable but I could also sense the anger in the voice of the spiritual leader. Samuel's CGI was stunning as always. The music fit perfectly, however strangely enough it seemed a little too close to the Voyager original. All in all the film was excellent and very enjoyable. A thousand thanks to the cast and crew of this film for putting so much effort into it. I hope we'll see more from you in the future. Keep on trekking! Isn't that giving away knowledge to a less advanced culture, though? Natural development would have to mean everyone back on the home world watching them fry, basically? Even transporting them out at the last second would still be interfering, I think. It's a great question, is the Prime Directive really ethical or does it just prevent problems for Starfleet later on. Really an outstanding production here, writing, sets, all the background details; I hope there's more of these.

    The best thing about all of Star Trek's conflicts with the Prime Directive is that everybody can have a valid opinion. We've come a long way from the rebellious heroics of Captain Kirk's quite serious exceptions for the Prime Directive. All these big issues were appropriately mellowed in The Next Generation. Beyond The Sun brings back some of the genuine realisms that we haven't seen in Star Trek shows for a long time. Thank you for your thoughtfully superb fan production. 🖖🏻🖖🏼🖖🏽🖖🏾🖖🏿

      I'm going to go against the grain here because, as often happens with the network productions, it's forced. They're not sending anyone to their deaths. They're allowing them to do what they want. So, while I'm loving everything else about these, I'm standing firm here, against popular opinion.
      Due to my background in social psychology, I know what's going on here. When "Daddy-Government" or anyone we view as representing it says A, the _VAST_ majority of people have an enormous desire to mentally curl into the fetal position & start lying to themselves.
      The reason this breaks down so often in ST & can is that The Captain is only (nearly) unquestionable in combat situations. The discomfort of that makes people want to to cling to Unquestioning Authority. Morality though? _That_ is something people feel is more a decision of the group. While here on present-day Earth we don't get to play a part in that discussion, in this show, as well as all other versions of it, one can feel the hypocrisy of having a Single Authority Figure dictate what's right for all start to erode at how the captain is viewed.
      This almost happened recently. Justin Trudeau made the huge mistake of meeting with the leaders of the Canadian Trucking convoy, in public.
      From the distance of one's TV, politicians can say or do anything & even the most ardent opposition will crumble under the time it takes to act against policy. The Peer Pressure they'll feel every step of the way erodes at people's courage & learned helplessness takes over.
      Ahh, but the leader of the convoy was not emotionally equipped to take advantage of the situation. 'Government' _is_ Daddy to adults in Western society & they instead used this meeting to emotionally spew about how disappointed they were in 'Daddy.'
      *_Huge_* mistake.
      This reinforced the totally false notions that _'politicians' _*_'ARE'_*_ somehow 'Government Itself.'_ If they are, & this _is_ a crisis or highly stressful situation, then people will automatically revert to pleading with Daddy to rescue them, forgetting immediately that the _Daddy_ they are pleading with are the very politicians they are against! Because they feared losing or upsetting Daddy through upsetting mere corrupt _politicians,_ they sought the comfort of believing again that their Daddies in office would Protect Them. & went right back to allowing them to do whatever they want with total impunity, just like the framers of our constitutions wanted, right?

    Great work creating a legitimate eighteen minute Trek episode. I can see a big debate resulting over the central question.
    I think although Starfleet has gotten it wrong more often than right when it comes to the Prime Directive in this instance it was correct. If Ba’den had the right to choose his own path then so too did everyone else on the ship and it wasn't Starfleet's place to interfere provided there was no coercion involved.

      That sort of thinking is exactly what led to the events in the TOS episode “Patterns of Force”.
      If some "elder race" stepped in and "helped" every time humanity was about to do something stupid we never would learn anything. If they did it openly there wouldn't even be a "humanity" left there would only be a copy of that "elder race". Picard gave a speech on that very topic.

But Starfleet has tractor beams and could have pulled the ship off to the side first without beaming people aboard to deal with unfamiliar controls and technology and possibly risk their lives as well. I know the argument that might be made, but if the stars electromagnetic radiation was strong to interfere with the tractor bean it also would have interfered with the transporter beam as well.

    The sets look small and cramped...which is exactly what you would expect on a tiny ship like the Nova class!
    I actually like the CBS Trek (imperfect as it is) and I enjoyed the last movie, Beyond. But I do really really miss the older episodic Trek, and it's exploration of complex moral and ethical themes. And this fanfilm reminded me of that. Anson Mount, who is playing Captain Pike in the new series, Strange New Worlds, will return to that more episodic style...while at the same time hopefully showing character growth and change (which sometimes the episodic style of Trek neglected...which is why Harry Kim stayed an Ensign for 7 years. WTF!?)

    Reduced in rank to ensign? That is quite a drop in rank. Hopefully confined to quarters and subject to a review board for *possible* demotion. I know that's not what happened here, but what would be done. This is not Voyager where they are 75 years from Federation space. I'm sure there are nearby outposts and Starbases where a proper court session can be held if the Captain believed the Lieutenant was in dereliction of duty.
    Captain had one possible point of view, that the death of 12 people would signal to the others of their race that the destination was a deadly one. It is only a point of view however as she and that ship did not know this statement as fact, as I'll explain in a bit. Also if the ship did not return, wouldn't that tell the "fleet of ships" back home that they made it to the place of perfection? There were more steps they could have taken to know for sure.
    Lieutenant's actions, granted maybe not thought this far out as he was focused on saving lives, was another alternate course of action. It is likely that in the 20 years the ship was traveling to the star that their technology back on their home planet would have also increased. What took that ship 20 years could be traveled in a much smaller time by their newer ships.
    So the older ship would have more than likely met some of their other ships, seeking perfection, in the journey back. Those on the older ship would have gotten a much closer view of that destination as they narrowly missed it, and maybe had a few new thoughts on this "place of perfection" which they could have spread to the newer ships.
    As the episode liked to flaunt, the Federation ship was a superior exploration vessel. With the crew on the other ship saved, why not trace the flight path back to their home world and learn more about them? Maybe make mention the Federation ship met the other ship after their 20 year trek through the stars so they can find their long lost brothers and sisters?
    There is a lot about this episode that honestly in the end has me routing for the Lieutenant as he had two choices 1) follow the “our hands are tied we can do nothing” Captain’s orders and know he let 12 people die or 2) Follow his convictions and act to save 12 lives.
    I think the Captain put the Lieutenant in a difficult spot through inaction. A lot that could have been done with what they had.
    Explore the species home world as the ship continued to the star. With Warp technology they could have been there and back again by the time the species ship reached the star.
    Or been with them as they reached the star to be there for rescue of others as they realized on their own that the destination was a fatal one. Give them one more chance to save them. Looks like they were in a trance before. Now awakened if they were traveling into the star while awake that might have been a different story.
    I also liked the idea mentioned by someone else in the comments of Federation ship firing a probe into the star. They could have simply said "we are explorers, we just so happened to be checking out this star you are heading to, wanna watch?" And then the other species could have witnessed the probe be destroyed. People of faith might not be swayed seeing even that, but it might have gotten a few of them thinking. Others might have simply thought of the Federation as deceivers. But not important as they were "doing exploring work off to the side..."
    Lots of things we could Monday morning quarterback here. But ultimately, this is why a unbiased review board would need to determine the actions of this Lieutenant, the Captain, and this ship in this situation of a possible Prime Directive breach. And while the Federation values other cultures and beliefs, the Federation also values life. We've seen time and time again where the Federation did what they could to avert planetary disasters, move primitive cultures to places of safety (even without their knowledge), and other acts of compassion.
    Also kudos to the Lieutenant for following his convictions and owning up to them. I see a young Kirk or Picard in this guy! :D
    Conversation with another Captain in a similar situation of dereliction of duty :
    *Lt. Commander Data* : "Captain, I wish to submit myself for disciplinary action. I have disobeyed a direct order from a superior officer. Although the result of my actions proved positive, the ends cannot justify the means."
    *Captain Jean-Luc Picard* : "No, they can't. However, the claim 'I was only following orders' has been used to justify too many tragedies in our history. Starfleet doesn't want officers who will blindly follow orders without analyzing the situation. Your actions were appropriate for the circumstances. And I have noted that in your record."
    [Data acknowledges with a nod and turns to leave]
    *Captain Jean-Luc Picard* : "Mr. Data... Nicely done!"

      Thank you for your comment! You're right in that there is so much process and investigation as to what happens next that we could make a whole other film on. We were actually hoping to pick up where we left the Engineer character in a future film but unfortunately the pandemic has put a pin in that plan.

    This was a thoughtful well produced episode. The sets were impressive and the actors really hit the mark.
    Considering all sides of the question, the possibilities for future animosity between these people and the Federation is certainly in play. When making such a momentous decision you would have to be able to accept the consequences, including being dishonorably dismissed. I am very curious about his fate.

    This is really quite good considering Star Trek of past eras! Captain Kirk might have made love to all the women and beat the all men senseless with his fists and phasers set on "stun" (as per the American way). Captain Picard might have muddied the waters with his self righteous philosophical commentary and chose weak inaction. Captain Janeway as a complete bitch (and admittedly my personal favourite) might have made her point with a full spread of photon torpedoes! It is quite an accomplishment of storytelling that a junior officer chooses to sacrifice his career without regret for the nobler ethics of preserving sentient lives that are not of his own culture. Sometimes despite best efforts there is no right way, only lesser degrees of doing wrong. Kudos to the cast and crew that brought us this very fine production! Cheers! 😃

Once again I am absolutely floored by how a fan made production with 90% less a budget than the fools who make Discovery with writers who make possibly six figures, and multimillion dollar budgets, and produce absolute CRAP! While fans who have shoestring budgets who write, produce, and direct better than what CBS has turned out! Shaking my head and applauding the fans who continue time and time again to produce REAL STAR TREK, and give us fans what we want and deserve! Alex Kurtzman, you need to watch all the fan made films to see how to make Star Trek!!

    This was a very good episode. The acting was spot on and believable. The plot? Superb! The Special FX were VERY good. BUT, your set designers need to spend a little more time working on the sets. It looked like it was just thrown together. Bad paint jobs, uneven cutting, jagged edges, etc. You all have a bright future ahead of you. I can see it. You're end result on set productions are directly related to how much time and attention to detail is used. Please keep improving. I want to see more of what your writers come up with.

    • @voyagesfanfilm
      @voyagesfanfilm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, but our sets were not 'just thrown together'. This is a fan film, made with a minimal crew, donated time and talents, and paid for out of the pocket of one person. We appreciate feedback and constructive criticism, but ignorant comments on the reality of what this project is - no.

    • @ToddHofer
      @ToddHofer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@voyagesfanfilm I think you need to re-read and, reinterpret my comment. I did not say you threw it together, I said it "looked like it was thrown together". It was NOT meant as an ignorant comment. It was written as constructive criticism. As creators, you need to understand that you will get criticisms you do not like. It doesn't mean you should be bashing the person making the comment. You should be thinking and learning from the criticism. That's how you perfect your craft. You can't expect everyone to be "Yes" people. I can tell by your comment that you are quite a bit younger than me. As you get older, you'll understand what I mean. Live long......

    This is really beautiful and I love that it starts right away and the style is perfect.
    One note, though, at 2:16 the line "you were too busy kumbayah" makes no sense. This is a 2020 thing and the word and its origin don't mean what you think. It's an African American spiritual song with its root in the suffering of slavery! It has nothing to do with people sitting in a circle meditating, that's a recent perversion into mockery and one that isn't going to stick around hundreds of years in the future in space. Because hopefully, the word of star trek isn't going to populated by a bunch of right wingers trying to score points mocking the left with a song they only know from a Disney cartoon.

    • @KentonBenfield
      @KentonBenfield 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree that one line seemed a bit demeaning and culturally insensitive for a Starfleet trained on-duty crewman; then again, he did end up demoted in the end, so clearly the Academy did not polish this one as well as others.

    • @voyagesfanfilm
      @voyagesfanfilm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.
      From a character perspective, the Engineer referencing 'Kumkayah' and a few other quips he throws out (like 'crispy bacon' etc) was put there to show just how tactless and insensitive he was towards the Pilgrims and their culture. He is just plain ignorant and that carries on throughout the film until he is reprimanded for his actions.
      From a production perspective, we're trying to recreate the look and feel of the era in which Star Trek was produced and that often involved throwing modern colloquialisms and phrasing into a show that is set hundreds of years into the future where you would expect them to be long gone, so that's why it was included in the script.
      However, thank you for taking the time to re-highlighting to us the history of the word, and your comment will certainly encourage us to think carefully about using 'modern phrasing' in future projects and how to better contextualize them if we place them in a story.
      Thank you for watching :)
