    This sort of "slice of life" type story is just perfect for a fan film. They give us fans the nerdy minutiae of Starfleet that we don't often get in the official productions. Well done!

    The arrival of the Indianapolis was impressive, leaving me with an impression of size and power. "Who needs a Galaxy" indeed! A good ship with a proud name.
    With a practical joker friend aboard I think Ensign Reed is starting what we all hope will be an interesting (and fun!) tour of duty. This story line is off to a very good start.
    Well done!

      @@SGUDistantHope Well, being a life-long Star Trek Fan, I definitely liked the appearance of the ships. I'm not familiar with the type of ship the Beowolf was, but always a delight seeing the classics like the Constellation class Indianapolis warp in to pickup Ens. Reed. Very Nicely Done!

      I thought the transporter effect was fine. Emma was great and ship models and movement particularly good. Interiors generally good and Transporter room scene standout, could have been lifted straight from next gen! (Hope that's a compliment, it's meant to be.) Shuttle pod window view proportions and slight green screen interface could be tweaked.Great job.

    I'm just discovering your channel through Emma Thorne and I loved everything about this. The quality of the backgrounds and scenes was great. I'm also impressed with the writing and acting because having a character do exposition through talking to themselves is difficult and can be extremely cringey, but this came off really well, in my opinion.

      The scripting when it comes to the assignment transfer, and the fact that Emma's character Reed is very easy to empathise with. Emma's acting conveys the emotions in high resolution, particularly with facial expressions and voice modulation. I feel the sense of personal dedication juxtaposed with inter personal loneliness. WELL DONE, you!
    Ships look great, nice acting, good start to a story!
    A Constellation has never looked better.
    Emma Thorne did a very good job.
    Only feedback, prefer typical TV ratio, it's wasted real estate otherwise. Also would "lock down" the camera, the floaty movement can be a bit distracting, except on the shuttle, that actually added to the "spacey" effect of floating in a small shuttle.
    Overall, very, very good!
    Congrats!
    Can't wait to see what you with your Star Wars project!

    • @Gotham_Gazette
      @Gotham_Gazette 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yah, unless you're literally transferring old 70mm film to fit a tv, it makes zero sense and just makes my tv image smaller. and chopped off the top of her head in many shots. doesn't look more cinematic than the already wide screen of today's modern tellies.
      that's a nitpick, the rest was brilliant

    • @SGUDistantHope
      @SGUDistantHope  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jack,
      All personal preference in things you said there. Some like Anamorphic, some like 4:3...some like movement in their camera, some like tripods and some like full on shaky cam.
      I love the anamorphic widescreen as i think it feels super cinematic and elevates all my work. I have done plenty of fan films in 16:9 and it feels lacking compared to when i design space shots in anamorphic (since i render them at that ratio).
      Personal preference and its fine you done like anamorphic, but i and lots of others do! :)
      yes the SW will be fun!

    • @Jack_Stafford
      @Jack_Stafford 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SGUDistantHope Artistic preference, hard to argue that I suppose.
      But please don't misunderstand, I love Anamorphic... on an anamorphic screen.
      4:3 is also great (if that's the original media). I don't think OG TOS or TNG is "less elevated" by being in that format. Even when I've seen them projected on cinema screens;
      Best of Both Worlds is amazing in that environment! The 4:3 actually adds an "IMAX" feel to it, which in a similar ratio. (Real IMAX I mean, not the cheaper "Quasi Imax" branded stuff.)
      The remaster of TNG ran into so many problems... I mean... why create more issues. Original format is almost always objectively better.
      When converting from 70mm print, so it makes sense to crop, out of necessity since they are stuck with a conflicting media.
      But creating for home viewing, I don't think the slightly wider view adds anything to the production, but the cropped tops and bottoms definitely does detract from the size of the image and serves no logical purpose.
      That's my rationale, I always enjoy your work and have promoted you and your channel for years, and will cetainly continue to! Have loved your work literally for 6-7 years.
      Will keep using the "zoom 110%" button in the meantime, literally missing nothing on the far peripheries, but do dislike the tops of ppl's heads missing sometimes...
      ;)
      KEEP going. Better with every production.
      Particularly am excited about the Star Wars content coming up!
      Cheers!

    • @SGUDistantHope
      @SGUDistantHope  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jack_Stafford Hey man, personal preference and i cant agree with you.
      Anamorphic really adds such a cinematic vibe and its super rewarding to frame my shots in anamorphic.
      I use an anamorphic view on my camera and make the VFX in anamorphic so its all framed for that medium creatively and visually...I love it and lots do.
      But, can't work for everyone :P

      @@SGUDistantHope yes, the acting was very good. This may sound cheesy but I truly felt in touch with the character, and could feel the anxiety and emotions she was portraying. Sometimes on the shows the characters almost seem like superheroes, but you really showed that she was a real person in Starfleet. It was very refreshing actually. I got into the story and was bummed it ended. So very nice job.

      It was just so well-rounded, @@SGUDistantHope.
      A great story, great audio, a fantastic cast, well acted. The CGI is very well done. If I had my choice to change one thing, and just slightly. It would be to back the camera up just a bit, during scenes like we see in this video, at the 05:59, and 07:39 mark.
      I'm subscribed now, and really look forward to seeing what comes next! 😃
      Maybe you could too, sometime in the future. Storyboard out a whole hours worth of video, and then just make them in 10 minute segments. Later, put them all into a playlist. Telling a longer story. 🌞

    Nice! It's good to see new fanfilms since Paramount released strict new guidelines on producing ST fanfilms. So, now we get to see new fanfilms produced within the guidelines. And they'rewell-made and fun to watch. Duty Calls looks like a good one. Looking forward to more!

    • @SGUDistantHope
      @SGUDistantHope  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Alan! The guidelines aren't actually very strict and not at all enforced (As is their right because they are guidelines and not rules). There have been more films released in the 5+ years post guidelines then pre guidelines.
      CBS has allowed all sorts of films to come out after, longer form stories, a feature film and hundreds of short films.
      The fan film community has thrived,

      @@SGUDistantHope I enjoyed the wide eyed "newness" of Ens. Reed, and the "hazing" by her shipmate. Also the leaving her in the shuttlepod, that is how it works in "the real world" military.

  • @CollinGerberding

    Holy wow so good.
    The perspective was great throughout. Particularly that with the lighting in the shuttle pod is I think the best integrated fx work in the piece.
    It very much had the feel of star trek, beyond props and sounds, the pacing, the framing, very on point.
    Subbed and looking forward to more.

    I liked it... it's a nice intro to a character that feels like it could be the cold open for a show or movie. However, I have notes: the framing device of having Emma talk to herself the whole time is a little odd... but you do have her "stop recording" which helps. At 1:53 we are hearing what is actually a personal log but we don't know that until "stop recording." It would have felt more natural is we got a "personal log, stardate..." before that. Also, later on you have an Ensign say "thank you Ensign." Personnel of the same rank don't refer to each other by rank.
