    Hi Jude, I hate adding to anyone’s problems after your wood staining story, but I feel that I need to pass on a bit of advice (as one who lives in your area). At this time of year when the geese fly in for the winter, we go to the hardware store and get some mousetraps. (You can get humane ones) We get field mice every year and we have lost our food, dog food and they chew through wiring too. My house is over 100 yrs old and lath & plaster like yours. You will easily know that you have them because you will hear them running up and down inside the walls, or see tiny shiny black droppings (my terrier lets us know when they arrive). Storing food in sturdy containers is a good plan too. I love watching your videos❤ It reminds me of when we first moved into our house. I must have been wearing those rose tinted specs that people talk about but we’ve been here over 40 years now and love living in the countryside.

    • @rewildingjude
      @rewildingjude  หลายเดือนก่อน +54

      Ohhh that is VERY good advice, thank you! (Getting a cat is also on my list but none of the ones I’ve seen in shelters can live with dogs, and I am desperate for a dog!) I’ll stock up on some humane traps - I’ve used them with peanut butter in the past (there was a terrible few months where we had rats in my kitchen at university 🙈🤦‍♂️)

    Open water buds are not only leaves collectors, Jude, but also breeding places for mosquitoes. All my water barrels have fine-mazed bug screens on top of them to prevent them from laying eggs in the water. You don't need a mosquito plague at your house. Just a tip when it comes to raking and hauling leaves. Instead of raking smaller piles of leaves and then picking them up and putting them into a wheel barrow, take an old bed sheet, lay it on the ground, rake the leaves into it, pick it up by the four corners and haul it like a big sack back to your leaf compost bin. You can take many more leaves on each trip and take many less trips to the bin instead of pushing a small wheel barrow back and forth! My husband has done this for years and it's very convenient and fast! Give it a try!
    I'm really looking forward to Winter and Spring at your 150 Year Old Scottish Cottage! 🙂

    Hi Jude. May I suggest you have a few of those leaf bins dotted around your property, I think you're going to need them. You might also find that they'll need lids, to stop the wind blowing the leaves out again. May I also suggest using the lawn mower to pick the leaves up. It helps speed up the process of them breaking down by mulching them somewhat, and as an added benefit, saves time and effort from all the raking.

    • @rewildingjude
      @rewildingjude  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think I might make another leaf bin - I’ve seen a couple that are just mesh pulled into a circle with wooden posts - and I have lots of leftover mesh, so I might tuck another one into a corner somewhere! The current one is pretty sheltered, so I think they should be okay without a lid - although there’s a lot of wind and rain outside tonight, so who knows!

    love the leaf mould frame, even if it took a couple of attempts!
    My mum stores the leaf mould in bags, and then halfway through them breaking down she empties them one at a time into the chicken run, the chickens have a good dig through it all for any stuff which also gives it a turn and exposes it to the air so it rots down a bit more, then she collects it back up into (fewer) bags to use as and when she needs it! Lots of ways to do it, hopefully yours works out well for how you need it!

    For years I lived on the outskirts of a major Australian city on acres of bush. We had to collect rainwater for house use, not water laid on. As you may know Australia is a dry continent, and we used to hold our breathe hoping our rainwter tanks would last a dry summer, if not we paid for the water tanker to fill that huge tank. I know everything that can go wrong with this system of getting and keeping water. From dead possums getting into the tank, rendering the whole tank unusable, to dust turning to concrete in the guttering and not only finding no water in the tank but you need to replace all the guttering around the house. What a wonderful life it is living rural! You are learning, and with learning comes joy. I'm now 77 and live close to the city, but my rural life is still loved in my heart.

    I bought my house a little over two years ago. It was structurally sound, but in dire need of an update / lots of TLC. I enjoy DIY but have to take it slow/work in small increments due to health issues. Still, I’m making progress. Just today I finished taking down an ugly suspended ceiling downstairs. Yay! It looks so much better already, even though I still need to repair the holes in the ceiling and repaint ceiling, walls and woodwork. Right now I’m just grateful I managed to get one project done.

    Hey Jude, me and my partner have been loving watching your videos!
    Quick note as to why you might have been struggling with your drilling though- there are 3 modes (screw, drill and hammer)
    ‘Screw’ is for putting in screws and the drill stops spinning when it gets to a certain resistance level.
    ‘Drill’ just makes the drill bit keep spinning (which is what you need to use for wood).
    ‘Hammer’ makes the drill bit spin but also hammers/moves the drill bit in and out of the drill (which is used for concrete/masonry).
    At about 7:58 when you’re drilling the wood, Your drill appears to be in ‘hammer’ mode which is the wrong mode- you just need to turn the selector to the drill shaped icon.
    It probably explains why you were struggling with those little blocks you were putting on the guttering and it kept breaking when you were drilling it despite the pilot holes!
    Hope that helps, we’re really enjoying watching and looking forward to seeing the further developments!

    • @rewildingjude
      @rewildingjude  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ahhh thank you!!! That’ll teach me for not checking things properly! 😂😂 I don’t tend to use that drill for masonry (I’ve got more powerful ones for that) but I probably thought ‘well it’s not going in, so maybe hammering will help’ at some point 🤣🤣
