      It took over 5 years of going to old school endocrinologist who prescribed postage stamp treatment of synthetic drugs to break free and get to the root cause. Mine was over stressed adrenals and now after 2 weeks of vitamin supplementation and Armor thyroid I’m losing weight breathing better and have more energy. My hope is that functional medicine will replace standard medicine in the near future as people get better educated.

    My mom reversed many dementia symptoms by following Dr. Dale Bredesen’s program (DIY fashion, with me as her coach). ❤🎉so grateful!!! She passed 3/7/23 after a fractured hip 12/19 made her bedridden (daily exercise was a huge part of her recovery and maintenance). But even with that trauma, she knew me and my sisters til the end, and kept her personality. Forever grateful. ❤

      @MorganReece ปีที่แล้ว +44

      PS Baseline Symptoms as of Summer 2021:
      Age: 93
      A1C: 10.2
      MoCHA score: 16 (decades off on the current year, thought our President was Jimmy Carter)
      Sundowners episodes: thinking she was in her childhood home in MD when in her apartment in CA; mistaking her daughter for a mysterious stranger who must have grown up across the street to know so much about her; too tired/paranoid to sleep in her downstairs bedroom at night; wetting her couch and recliner and not noticing; leaving her bathroom with pants in hand, oblivious to feces dripping down her legs; confined to a wheelchair when leaving her apartment due to falls.
      Symptoms in December 2022:
      Age: 94.5
      A1C: 5.9
      President? Joe Biden
      Before her hip fracture, she attended church services and enjoyed shopping with me, no wheelchair. Cared for her own toileting 24/7. Showed improved scores on Brain HQ. Her PT regimen included marching 20x (holding a grab bar inside the window sill), knees raised hip high. She danced with me as we enjoyed Lawrence Welk. She also repeatedly watched Dr. Bredesen interviews on TH-cam; Dr. Hyman’s was a favorite. 😍
      The Sundowners was still there but much different: she nightly asked where she was to sleep, but always knew who I was. Best of all, she was herself.
      After watching my grandma’s decline from AD (crawling on carpet, eating lint 🤮), there are no words for my gratitude to Dr. Hyman and others who made the ReCODE program so accessible.
      If you or a loved one has Dementia, there is hope! You may not be able to reverse everything. But don’t let that keep you from trying. And if you hit a wall and start declining again, review the program and tackle the next thing. Things that made a difference for Mom: strenuous exercise, AM hydration, ketoflex 16/8, dropping A1C thru diet & exercise, big salad at 5-7d/wk, sardines 2x/wk (lemon-curry & smashed, in keto wrap), bedtime fat bomb (THM Skinny Chocolate), spirometer drills 3-4x/day, side sleeping, nasal breathing. See playlists on my channel for links to Dr. Bredesen info & more. And follow Dr. Hyman! Very smart holistic advice. 🤗

    I see a functional doctor and cannot imagine being a patient in an allopathic clinic. I have gone to two referred specialists ( dermatology and endocrinology) and came back to my doctor saying I wasn’t going back, period, and would he consider being my one stop doctor. He agreed.
    Last visit I asked him why he went into functional medicine and he looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘because my patients were not improving’.

    • @curiouscat3384

      My experience also. I'd been going to a functional med doctor but this year wanted to get on board with a "regular" doctor because they did a great job with testing and treating covid. Plus I'm now on Medicare and can save the high private pay of a functional doctor just to get annual tests when, knock on wood, all my routine labs are normal. Anyhoo - the regular doctor at the beginning said "just so you know, I'm NOT a functional medicine doctor and I won't be doing all that testing and supplements and such" as she's waving her hands dismissively, almost as if she was warding off evil spirits. Then she just went down their routine new patient checklist of questions and gave me a 10 minute lecture each, on why I should get colonoscopy and mammogram but wouldn't entertain the idea of getting a CAC scan. I doubt I'll go back unless I have some minor injury or illness that I need a referral for. But I"m phobic also about specialists so I appreciate your testimonial KaCee! Oh and p.s. the Functional Medicine practice only has maybe one patient in the waiting room at a time. I get at least a 30 minute consultation just to discuss my wellness program. The regular doctors have a packed waiting room of old miserable looking people (I'm 68 but feel about 40) - what an unpleasant experience!

      My husband's new Dr just told him to drop Salt intake (we use iodized sea salt & pink salt in ACVinegar) - read up on how vital salt is and they're telling patients to drop salt without asking about their carb/sugar intake & checking insulin resistance etc

    • @curiouscat3384

      @@c4caffeen134 Ugh! So I guess he didn't test him for sodium? We need at least 1500 mg per day. I learned this when I quit eating processed foods, I need to ADD 2 tsp salt per day. And balance that with 4700 mg Potassium! Nutrition is complicated and sadly, countless doctors have just learned a mantra of reduce salt intake to battle high blood pressure. Us educated people here know that salt is not the enemy, SUGAR is !!! I love Dr. Berg's channel because he spells all this out.

      Can Adrenal Fatigue or chronic inflamation be fixed? Is there a protocol to reverse fatty liver? Do prescription drugs compromise the liver, things like Vytorin, diuretics, antidepressant, and anxiety pills. Is it possible to sustitute them for natural medicines instead of chemicals pills that ruin another part of the body?

    • @johnfly9564
      @johnfly9564 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gloriadearellano7442You will first need to get off the prescription drugs, one at a time, starting with the SSRI’s and anxiety medication. I would personally stop the anti-anxiety medication first, because if it’s not a benzodiazepine then it’s only working through the placebo affect, and if it is a benzodiazepine, it is disrupting too many natural body and brain processes to count. Benzos can require a very, very slow tapering process, especially if you are not able to stay at home while you do this. The easiest method would be to step your dosage down as minimal an amount as possible, even if you have to use volumetric measuring, and then staying on that lower dosage for at least 21 days until you step down again. When you are finally off, wait another 21 days minimum to let your body adjust and to avoid having to start on the medication again. If you do have to start back on it, that is fine, just go to the lowest comfortable dosage and try again. This process can also be used with the SSRI but the tapering may can go faster. Both the anti-anxiety and SSRI can have a lengthy detox process even after you have gotten completely off. Know that even though it may feel like it, this detox process will not kill you. For the most troublesome parts I had to utilize complex meditation techniques and very small doses of psilocybin mushrooms, but I was suffering from complex childhood trauma. After I was able to get off the psychotropic meds, I was able to start on the physical body meds. I am now on zero medications from up to 9 at one point, and am only showing mild autoimmune symptoms, which decline in intensity the longer I go without eating gluten. I did have to completely change my mess of a diet before starting this process, while making small changes along the way, to compensate for all the systemic disruptions within my body. Before I started this process I was on the cusp of a permanent Hashimoto’s diagnosis along with a possible fibromyalgia diagnosis. Those symptoms are now gone. Good luck, message me if you require more information.

Honestly, when my doc kept telling me the same thing, and I kept asking him "then why do I have tons more energy and I never have the crash or lows that I did when I ate carbs?" and he just looks at me like I'm the idiot I got a new pcp!! The fact that he could see the weight loss, see the incredible changes in my labs, see the complete cessation of my symptoms along with the fact that I look so much healthier and vital, yet still didn't even have the sense to stop and consider, even for a moment, that maybe he doesn't know everything was just too much for me to trust him with any other health issues. Dr.Hyman you and others like you are a blessing to us all. You don’t just think outside of the box, you took the box apart and made something beautiful out of it.
    As for saturated fats I noticed that the people I know (knew) that lived on saturated fats lived into their late eighties and into their nineties. That got me questioning all the hype around saturated fats. Ate mostly saturated fat but not every day. My wife’s grandmother cooked with and in lard three times a day and her husband died at 89,
    Her mother who lived with her was 95. Of course they worked every day and had a very low stress level.
    I think your work and way of thinking is so far advanced and independent, I really wish more (all) doctors would step away from big Pharma and investigate the root causes the way you and your colleagues have.
    Love you man!

    Just played video 5/9😱Damn!...nearly passed on watching this video. What a huge disservice I would have done myself (Seriously said and 100% meant). 🏆👍That was an EXCELLENT informative and helpful hour well spent for me this morning. Damn, that was some fantastic information I heard -"heard",...and to think I was about to mark it as save on my phone. And maybe never get back to it to watch later on, but saved it in case I might. I was truly primed and ready for all you spoke about leastwise all that resonated that "I" could hear. WOW! Will be re-playing this video again this evening! Taking notes this time! Thank you for making and posting this video. I am so grateful to have watched it. 🏆👍

    I did most of my work around end of life with lots having dementia,
    I cared for them and I’ve also done therapy work with people with dementia.
    If I was having a awkward moment where anger and frustration was involved I’d keep calm and tell alexia to put music on from their era and it instantly changes the energy .
    I always wondered if there was a way to reverse dementia, so hearing this is brilliant I definitely will be taking is and sharing this with families .

    I work in an assisted living, most of my 13 years is working with people who have dementias. I’m just the person who hangs out with them, daily activities, music and to help them keep for a little longer. We no longer take anyone with Lewy Bodies, doesn’t respond to “conventional medications/treatments.” I had one man with it, the saddest dementia, he was tortured in what was happening to him, his hallucinations were real to him, it pulled his face into a mean look, he wasn’t. He was a lovely man in between episode, ran a New York City hospital, hallucinations had a lot to do with his work. My people break my heart, I love them dearly. They pay a ton of money, the food served is just dead empty processed food with a few exceptions. A ton of medication, tiny people with a pile of pills. It scares the hell out of me, hence my listening to your podcast. I teach a class for new hires, many stories, reasons why, etc, football head injuries, head banger bands causing some to suffer CTE. I’m in MA so the Patriots Aaron Hernandez is part of my discussions.
    Oliver Sacks, Alive Inside, is one of my heroes, music is magic. Thank you for what you are doing for dementia treatments

It went out of use when anti-seizure medications became available. Then it was "rediscovered" decades later. You are 100% accurate on the composition of the ketogenic diet. Dr Hyman resonates so well with me. I was unaware of the term "Functional Medicine" before, However, I am quite the supplement nerd and always trying to improve my health. About 12 yrs ago, I had no energy. My blood was tested and there was no iron, low sex hormones and very low thyroid hormones. The lab tested my blood 3 times and called the Dr in alarm. I was severely anemic and my thyroid had been failing. I also had scary high blood pressure and was heading into menopause. I was put on meds. Fast forward - I am wondering if I will ever be able to have a naturally functioning Thyroid again. I am already doing many of the things he mentions he does/takes. This video is inspiring me to look into other tests and medications - thank you Doc!

NO SUGARS! SUGARS, I BELIEVE, are the Main Culprit of my memory loss!!! I struggle every day with words and certain phrases, but I believe it is because The GUT is not being fed well with the appropriate balances of WHOLSeOME FOODS AND LIQUIDS! I am getting back by listening to my gut now, and I believe it is helping me quite a bit! I don't blurt out names and other phrases that I cannot control any longer, and make it a point to use either The Ketogenic Diet, which is difficult, as well as taking better care of my GUT! She had edema in both legs when I took over her diet. Edema gone within a month. She was prediabetic, not anymore and her Vitamin D went from 19 to 51. First thing when we wake, is a walk in Nature. Little did we know it was junk food, and more and more fast food came along. It tasted worse and worse, and people got fatter and fatter. I lost 65 pounds on keto. I was going on 4 years keto, the third year cheating some but getting right back on it. Well, here I am, I don't blame you for giving permission to eat other things once in a while, but I tried different foods and they didn't do bad like it used to. Ezekeil bread, then it went to deli meats for the bread, then rice wasn't so bad. All of a sudden I couldn't do a whole shopping trip. My legs and feet are cramping up. I'm buying healthy granola bars that in reality are candy bars. The carbs and sugar tricked me, just like they say happens with alcoholics.
    So I made the date and started at the beginning again. Beef and veggies is what my body responds to very well. I will let my husband see my results. He's the one who brings the garbage into the house.

Need to have 25 hydroxy blood level at 140ng per mL for optimal dosing. am taking Vitamin D3 30,000 IU a day for me with 300 mcg K2 and Magnesium 400 mg to 600 mg helped me have it only mild. I added Quercetin, NAc and colloidal silver in lemon water and lots of hydration when I got hit with covid in November. I also had my Iveremectin ready and took 30 mg daily for a week. Am glad I had it mild. body malaise was the worse feeling. I helped out a lady with covid last month without any precautions on my part except hand washing and never got hit again. I was expecting a sniffle but zero. Keep supporting the innate immunity and it will deal with any variants . No vaccine-induced wiping out of my innate immunity for me.

    I'm commenting after watching the beginning of this video. My friend was diagnosed with Parkinsons and Lewy body dementia at the age of 53. After 5 years it has advanced to the point where he is now in assisted living. Currently he is experiencing hallucinations, and is aware of them. He lives 3 states away so I don't know anything about his diet. I would like to see the assisted care places changes the diets of their residents for their health. There needs to be more regulation in this area.

    I loved this video and many of your other videos. I feel pretty heathy at my age of 77 years. But when I was younger in high high school and college and before l had stomach problems. The cause was food allergies and lactose intolerance. Avoiding milk, ice cream and cheese solved the lactose problem and the food allergy was corn and it’s derivatives a big problem. Doctors would prescribe Mmylanta 2 for my stomach problems. And a swig before solved that problem, but if I stopped taking Mylanta. At 37years old I got married and my stress level went up, butI was able to stop taking the Mylanta that puzzled me bu I never had to take Mylanta again.

    Dr. Hyman, you very frequently recommend nuts and seeds but what about the phytic acid that disrupts the absorption of minerals? And a small volume has quite a lot of carbs. 1/4 cup almonds has 6 carbs. If you are eating low carb, that adds up fast.

    • @aminachaoui3881
      @aminachaoui3881 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you have to soak your seeds and nuts, there is a specific chart for that, add sea salt to the water, dehydrate them the day after or roast them, it will remove the phytic acid and you will benefit from this food :)

    I remember my first Alzheimer’s patient. Aggressive behavior at times, Alzheimer pts did the opposite actions. He was in the shuffling feet stage and began to cuss like a sailor. I was trying to get him from bed to chair. His wife seemed embarrassed, but was very helpful. During our conversation she mentioned he liked to dance. 🎉 I led him to the chair as we danced shuffling feet and slight garbled conversation. He chuckled. In nursing school we were taught about organic brain syndrome. Not Alzheimer’s. Life is full of new science findings. Evolution of the body!

      Several years ago I lasted less than 2 weeks on thyroid medication for the under active thyroid due to the awful side effects. I did not want to continue on with medication to have to see if this or that dose was going to work. Fortunately, I able to contact my retired Master Herbalist (also retired pharmacist), as well as another one where I live. They both told me thyroid problems are the result of adrenal stress and you must nourish the adrenals. I went on a "Adrenal Support" which is a combination of herbs: rhodiola, holy basil, schisandra. Twice per day I also take kelp and alfalfa powder (1/8 level tsp.). Before bed, I include 1/8 level tsp. of ashwaganda powder. After using these, my blood tests came out normal. I even received a personal letter from the oncologist congratulating me on whatever I'm doing. This doctor was very aware that I had already began the herbal route when I had my blood tests again. Plus, to be on the safe side, I usually avoid all cruciferous vegetables, and if I do have them, I steam them first.

    Having moved from keto to almost total carnivore, there no longer are the ‘mini gastric reflux’s’, where talking has to stop for that quick swallow to keep stomach contents distal to the cardiac sphincter. During this podcast the good doctor displayed body language - of perhaps a gastric issue or excessive salvia……which does not entice me to reintroduce veggies- (which some ‘violent vegans’ preach)…. I’m concerned- being new to carnivore- but having so many veggies I can’t tolerate - I feel lost without a firm footing in one ‘diet religion’ or other. Recently I realized that as far back as I can remember most foods,did not sit well or hurt….like raw carrots, tomatoes, now it seems the oxalates(chocolate,coffee), and oats are implicated for frequent itchy rashes. Thank you for your attention!
