  • The long barrel 1873 in 38/357 has so much going for it. This new Winchester is superbly made. It is actually better made than my grade 2 '73. The long barrel makes it very quiet, easier to shoot at distance and still easily packable all the while carrying 13 rounds. It's no wonder this length barrel was the most popular originally.
    Low cost bulk 38 ran flawlessly and 357's recoil was hardly noticeable. The '73 action especially with 38 special is really fast. Other than a semi auto it is the fastest rifle I've fired. This all resulted me carrying and shooting the rifle at every chance I had. It is my favorite old west gun.
    I got mine on sale but honestly at this point I'd get one regardless.
    Winchester Model 1873 Sporter Octagon Pistol Grip.
    All shooting done on public lands.

    I keep coming back to this video. Something in the music, the lever cycling and the reverberation across those rolling hills that speaks to me. It settles me right down and I start feeling warm inside; its the strangest thing.

    After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!

    Now that I’ve been shooting mine a few months I have to say your video really captures how fun and rewarding this gun is to shoot. I just love it. 38spc is fun plinking, but the 357 is PERFECT! Very accurate for me to 300yds and extremely satisfying feedback from the gun. The recoil and report feels really pleasant actually.
    At 38spc it’s almost none existent, with my 1892 44mag rifle it’s fine, but a bit heavy on extended shoots....with the 357 it’s just right.
    Thanks again for the video. It helped me figure out this gun was for me and it’s still a joy to watch when I’m unable to get outside.

      44-40 is nearly impossible to find, but so was 6.5 Grendel for awhile. Good news is all five of ammo makers producing 44-40 in 2019, still list it, they just haven't made any as long as they are selling all they make of other calibers.

    I bought my Miroku Winchester 1873 saddle ring carbine in 357/38 about a year or so ago and love the hell out of it. It’s the first and only (so far) Winchester I’ve bought that wasn’t made in Connecticut. I have to say I’m impressed. I wish they were still made in the states but the Japanese craftsman are masters at building these guns. I hope to own many more.

      Hey Lighthill …. I was having some issues with 38Spl as well. I was shooting some factory Western Munitions 158 gr TC FMJ ammo that was loaded somewhat short OAL (had trouble feeding as well). Then got some different ammo ( in my case some Federal 158 gr round nose lead) and I went from a 6 shot 8 inch group to a 6 shot 1.5 inch group at 50 yards. I also tried some S and B 158 gr FMJ RN and it shot at the 2 inch mark. I was amazed how much better just changing the ammo improved the accuracy. To date all the 357 Mag I have shot shoot 1.5 to 2 inch at 50 yards.

    Whenever I tire of urban Nevada, all I have to do is watch these fine videos to remind me peace and tranquility is not far away. Really hope to get on of the 13 rounders one day and would like to have not just .38/.357, but also a .45 Colt. I have a Rossi R92 in .45 Colt and really like the accuracy and smoothness of the traditional side gate, top ejector, however that Winchester is just smooth as glass and shorter throw. I do enjoy my Henry .38/357 Magnum brass receiver carbine especially as you pointed out when sharing with others who would like to shoot them at the range. Thanks Mr. LeftThumbBreak. (Now I just need to buy some scabbards).

      I could not have said it better myself. There's nothing like sitting on a rock plateau miles away from anyone with a fine rifle with you. I can pretty much say I've never met a lever action I didn't like. I really do appreciate Miroku, Uberti keeping the spirit alive, but it would be something for Henry, Standard Mfg., Smith to start producing classic levers and classic wheel guns (aside from the original Henry rifle). I really would like to get up north in that big area between Elko and Caliente and around Great Basin. Being out there for a month in Fall would be something and really nice folks up there.

    I havent owned an 1873 Winchester as of yet. A 1873 Short Rifle in .45 Colt is the next firearm on my list.
    When I bought the latest 1892 (the one in .44 mag) I thought long and hard about an 1873 at the time too. Ultimately the strength of the 1892 and the .44 mag chambering was the deciding factor.

    Very nice gun! Looks fun. I shoot a Marlin 30-30 lever and enjoy it but would really love to have one of these. I'd also love to spend a week out there hunting with it in that country. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

      I do love the 44-40 but since I had my carbine in 44-40, and I wanted easy cheap ammo, I got the 38/357. If this were back in the day, I'd for sure get the 44-40 only.

    Got one last month, Christmas present to myself, only difference is I got it with a straight stock. Love it, replaced it with a Bullseye sight, better for my old eyes. Love the long octagonal barrel, love my Old West Guns. 👍🏻🤠

      Love this gun so much, know want one with a 20” or 16” barrel also 38/357. Did pick up a 1866 Yellow Boy in 44-40 to go with my Original Henry 1860 in 44-40. (Saving for the ‘73, hopefully get it by July, Birthday to myself 🤠). Happy Shooting.

    Pickup my 1894 Marlin Cowboy next week. Put an 1860 Henry 44-40 and 1866 Winchester 45-70 (same model you shot your video on) on layaway. Should have those in hand sometime in November. Have my sites on this 1873, maybe next year. Thx for the awesome vid, that action is light and smooth.

    • @LeftThumbBreak

      Thanks Georgiaboy. The pad is a Kirkpatrick, BC. It really is a lot better than the soft or thin leather ones out there. You can put the butt on rocks and not worry. I ordered it through Taylor's and company. Nice folks.

    • @LeftThumbBreak
      @LeftThumbBreak  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Rossi 92's are good guns from my experience (there is a vid on the channel). The 73's and 92's feel quite a bit different to me in weight and action.

    • @LeftThumbBreak
      @LeftThumbBreak  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The '92 action, I have also handled the Miroku 92, have a lot more going on. There's a feeling of a lot of parts moving. The '73 action feels very simple and direct. It's a little like a mauser/model 70 vs a tikka or r700. The '92 and the marlin 1894 are noticeably lighter and smaller feeling to me. The handling is a bit quicker. Sorry, I can't remember what I said on the popularity because i agree with you, the '24 was the most popular. It might been in reference to the 44-40 caliber.

    • @clinteastwood9115
      @clinteastwood9115 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeftThumbBreak but the 92 may have more parts but its stronger! It can hold up to 60000 psi loads like 454 casul which puts it very close to 45/70.

      I was amazed at how accurate the rifle was at any great distance so that must be a tribute and respect to the fine folks in Japan that take a great deal of pride in the making of those rifles !!! I'm looking at one that was 1 of 300 produced with maple wood stock and forend and 24 in. barrel by Miroku with Winchester stamping of course for $1400 dollars !!!! I'll probably bite the bullet and get it sometime early next year !!!!
