Captain America: Civil War was a blast and it was anchored by a truly fun and menacing villain in
Daniel Brühl's Zemo. While it's clear that Zemo is based somewhat on his comic counterpart, there are a lot of big changes to the character that you may have missed. In this video, I take a look at six comic characters that in one way or another influenced the MCU's take on Zemo.

The rest of the video is just a post credits scene
At this point I'm just happy he's putting the mask on.
Yeah, Bucky is getting up there in age. Wouldnt want him to get sick in their fight scenes
Sock mask needs to have goggles or whites it just looks like a ski mask
@@chrisquinn3377 it needs whites and the crown
which I find ironic, because I get the feeling he'd TOTALLY be like one of the anti-mask types

I love Zemo!
Klaue would probably be an arms dealer if he didn’t get his cut off.
now he's just an arm dealer
He’s not very well armed
Now he's armless
it was torn off by ultron. probably gave him the idea to sell more than just vibranium tho.
Or if he wasn't...
you know...

Zemo isn't Zemo, but that doesn't mean he's a bad villain. He's actually one of the best villains in the MCU.
Yep

“Yep, we’re doing one of these again”
Thank you for doing one of these again
Wait he did do one of these again but its a different one hes doing for the one hes doing again?
EDDYYYYY
Helmut Zemo sounds like an oddly specific superhero who saves reckless bikers from street accidents and tells kids to always wear helmets.
A Polish man that wears a lemon themed costume and tells kids to always wear helmets and knee pads
I feel like this came out just a bit too early given we have a full purple masked dancing Baron Zemo now
I was waiting for him to pick up a saber and use it at some point, although i havent seen all of the story, maybe he had.
Take a shot every time he says Zemo
Drink Zima and you won't die from alcohol poisoning
I counted. The man says Zemo 44 times.
it's a vid about Zemo what did u expect?
How did it go
I feel like the Chameleon connection is a bit of a stretch.
So much of this video is just listings of "Oh hey this character did something this other character does". He should be actually listing ways in which Zemo is made up of other characters' traits, not just loosely shared actions.
My thoughts exactly
Oh, and the Tinkerer isn't?
All of them are much more of a stretch than the other videos
Really? The Punisher is believable, but not the Chameleon? Okay.
I do like the fact that TFAWS brings him closer to his comic counterpart. He is still very different, but there is enough overlap to at least count as an actual adaptation of the character.
“Let’s just see who you really are, Mister.”
::pulls purple hood off of Zemo::
“Well it’s Old Man Withers, the guy who runs the haunted amusement park!”
“And I woulda gotten away with it too, if it hadn’t been for you snoopin’ Avengers!”
Snoopers gonna snoop.
@Deadpool Yes.
* pulls off mask, ripping off flesh *
You’re right. Zemo is actually Agatha in disguise, manipulating Cap into breaking up with Iron man to get him together with Bucky.
mephisto
What about falcon, were does he fit in the story
It was Zemo all along
@@novaenforcer1563Now thAt Steve is out of the picture, Zemo wants Bucky to get with Sam. So he’s gotta become Baron Zemo once again to make his ship canon. That’s what he meant by “I have no intention of leaving my goal unfinished”. The whole superheroes shouldn’t exist thing is bullshit.
The ending of Falcon and Winter Soldier:
Zemo: "You see, I am not actually Baron Zemo"
*pulls off mask to reveal Agatha Harkness and It Was Agatha All Along plays*
Nando: "Zemo isn't Zemo"

If this doesn't spawn a spin off called "Finding Zemo", I'll be really let down.
> Nando starts talking about the "Civil War" comics.
ok
> Nando notes that there wasn't really a villain pulling the strings from the shadows within the story of the "Civil War" comics, like Zemo does in "Captain America: Civil War".
ok
> Nando refers to what happens in the "Civil War" comics as "a completely natural conflict" that "naturally progressed" from the Stamford Incident---
whoa hey, hang on now, let's not overdo it there, Nando.
(Seriously, ain't _nothing_ "completely natural" about _any_ part of the events in those comics. Really, there arguably very much _is_ a villain pulling strings from the shadows to force all those characters take such, well, uncharacteristic actions; it's just that his name is _Mark Millar._ )
(Meanwhile, also, it's always super duper weird to me how Garth Ennis hates superheroes and loves writing stuff like "The Boys" about how "of course" superheroes would be self-absorbed monsters, when a couple of stories during his run on "Hitman" showed that he can, when he really wants to, write a _phenomenal_ Superman.)
It seems Garth Ennis is more into anti-heroes he doesn't like characters that have science fiction fantasy elements or little bits of fantasy like Captain America however he did say the only characters that he likes from DC is Wonder Woman Superman and John Constantine. And from Marvel the only characters he likes is the Punisher and Nick Fury.
Wasn't Walter Declun kind of behind it?
Ennis likes Superman because he saw him as a metaphor of his views on nationality.
I approve of the idea that “Zemo” is coming back into the MCU
Everywhere
You’re here again. Wow you have everything in common with everyone on TH-cam.
I feel like we watch the exact same people.
I approve of your approval
@@BreakfastSnack it’s not the real him, I subscribed to the real one and this one ain’t him
i actually like the rumor that the new reason for zemo for having that purple mask is inspired by thanos and he is sending a message or just taunting the people and heroes
I was about to say he looks like he’s wearing thanos’s skin
Update: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have made him a sort of "anti hero" (so far). He was revealed to be a baron as well before Ultron destroyed his country. I like this take on him, but have a feeling he'll betray Bucky and Sam later in the series. Cause it's Zemo
Oop didn’t age well! I’m honestly surprised he didn’t. I mean he kinda withheld info for a sec but that didn’t last long. I like the route they took with him tho
@@thedestroyasystem Yeah in some ways they basically turned him into human Magneto (although he's MUCH more chill than Erik lol), and I'm here for it tbh. Hope we see him again.
surprisingly he didn't
@@thedestroyasystem late but I was shocked too. I liked how he kept his word though. However I doubt we've seen the last of him. He'll probably be back as a main antagonist again with what he did in the series finale
I know Zemo isn’t like the comic Helmut Zemo but I love both versions. He’s one of my favorite Marvel Villains and MCU Villains.
You sir just read my mind.
I just told a friend of mine that this video already existed, but couldn't find it. And half an hour later, here I am, watching a video I thought I already watched.
I love these amalgam characters. Its like an Easter egg for fans, and gets in minor characters who might otherwise never be included
Helmut Zemo is one of my favorite Marvel villains. He was just a bog standard egotistical mad scientist, but his time with the Thunderbolts transformed him to a strategist trying to prove his superiority by saving the world, then reinvented again to a villain trying to punish heroes for glossing over their flawed pasts.
@PainCausingSamurai any comic recommendations to read on Helmut Zemo?
Honestly Zemo was so not Zemo that I didn't even realise he was meant to be Zemo until one of my later rewatches.
Ikr I was kind of disappointed
Was his name not a giveaway? The only one, but at least a very obvious one.
@@AntonioCardenasT His name only comes up in a single scene, at least spoken as I recall. If you're not paying close attention it is very easy to miss.
I legitimately didn’t know who he was supposed to be until I heard someone say his name again towards the end of the movie. Then it clicked, and I was like “ooooh it’s purple sock man, wait where’s the sock?!”
@@redgiant7747 your gonna see it in a couple of weeks
Now that the show has been out, is Zemo... more Zemo now?
He is a Baron, so definitely more Zemo
Curious how black panther 2 handles Chadwicks death.
They have an opening scene with his funeral and then replace him with a female Black Panther like what was planned originally.
@@Elfenlied8675309 ....you mean like Shuri?
On #4: We already met the Tinkerer in Spider-Man: Homecoming, he was the guy who made the tech for the Vulture and the Shocker.
I like how the MCU adapts things so they make sense in this more realistic universe and keep continuity. MCU Zemo is one of my favorite characters and I think TFATWS will only heighten that as he becomes Baron Zemo. Yeah, civil war could’ve gone on without him but I think it was great to put him in to do some worldbuilding and introduce someone who can come back later as the more “comic-accurate” one serious fans would want. No, he isn’t Zemo as you know him, but he fits the MCU and does a really good job, especially because of Daniel Bruhl’s performance
@Jackson Alvis
And he did indeed come back as more comic accurate..... Kinda
I loved the Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes zeemo
Same. It's the media that introduced the character to me in the first place.
Yeah and that design was excellent
Yea same that’s the main reason I love Baron Zemo
I loved him in that as well

And suddenly this video is almost completely invalidated.
The way you put it it sounds like Zemo is a whole Masters of Evil roster all rolled up into one person
Well, after FATWS, Zemo now shares the royalty part of the comic version. That’s about it.
(And he wears the sock in one scene I guess)
Daniel Bruhl is a great actor, he was also great in another movie where he does F1 races with Thor.
Love your work and perspective Nadno. You have me over here looking at aspects of a film I never would’ve.
Hes actually a great take of the character though which is nice. Could you do a Hawkeye isnt Hawkeye as well as they're very different

"I don't see no Barony" Apparently you just needed to wait a month :-D
I think Zemo will get his Baron title in Falcon and the Winter Soldier through his Leadership of the Flag Smashers.

And also, "Zemo" is like the least German name ever.
for real its like people don't know "Helmoot" come on now!
I didn't watch this video when it first came out but I'm here now after watching this Zemo dancing
Well you got your wishes, he's a baron now and we're seeing more of his Zemo-ness in TFATWS
Let’s be real, the name Zemo was used in Civil War because he’s Cap’s other archnemesis, and it was his last film and they hadn’t used him yet, so they went “let’s just call this normal guy Zemo.” And Civil War (the movie) is freaking amazing so cudos to them!
Zemo is an utterly pointless character in Civil War. He's just a reason for the plot to push forward.
@@Elfenlied8675309 And that's pointless? He literally is the reason why the plot exists.
@@Elfenlied8675309 You just contradicted yourself. You cannot call a character pointless if they serve a pivotal role. You may be looking for the term "plot device", but I personally feel that the term cheapens his great character work in the movie. (In my opinion of course)
Fist pumping, dancing Zemo is the best meme/gif of 2021 so far
No way they're gonna do this when they're already doing it with the Mandarin
Based on the reveal at the end of Far From Home, I think it’s really easy to assume Dimitri is a Skrull, and therefore could still be Chameleon.
so good to see you figured out you have a youtube channel :P
Making that connection to The Punisher was incredible!
Yeah...riiiiiiight...I'm honestly just happy you uploaded again. You, and many others with similar content, are *criminally* underrated.
Great video. Zemo in Civil War may not have been Baron von Sock Mask, but he was still a compelling antagonist by merit of his actions, his more grounded motivations, and Bruhl’s screen presence. The Avengers were already chaotic and dysfunctional, and Zemo exploited their power by exposing the flaws that were already there. It’s not far off of the Joker’s manipulation in the Dark Knight, but there was more of a concentrated reasoning behind Zemo’s methodology. He’s already proven to be a calculated mind capable of action (he did manage to exacerbate the divide between the heroes), and provide another perspective to the Avengers’ actions. I don’t know what Marvel has planned for Zemo in FatWS, but he’s a great embodiment of Bucky’s past coming back to get him (like “No Escape” in the comics), and we will likely now see a more fully-realized Baron Zemo more akin to his comic counterpart.
Nice mention with Lukin. He was an instrumental part of Bucky’s story in the WS comics, and since he ultimately becomes the Red Skull, who also exploited Bucky’s brainwashing and the fallout after Cap’s death and the SRA, is an excellent representation of what Zemo’s function has been within the MCU. Cheers Nando!
I'm only a minute and a half into the video and Zemo doesn't sound like a word anymore
There was also an alternate Civil War comic where it was revealed that the skrulls had been manipulating the whole thing
My favorite Zemo is Heinrich Xeno from Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
I love these videos please do more

Calling it now: The Power Broker is... Justin Hammer after 5yrs of working behind the scenes. The dancing Zemo scene gave it away to me when I remember Nado’s love for Hammer’s dancing. Power Broker is an eccentric billionaire arms dealer living off the grid, in a cyber punk 24/7 rave city.
I highly doubt they would wait this long to bring Justin Hammer back considering Iron Man 2 is like 10 years old.
I remember when they first introduced him one of the writers at a convention were talking about how he is the grandson of the original baron zemo and that one of the ideas they had was that instead of him finding the other winter soldiers he was originally supposed to be looking for his grandfather's hidden base that stored cryogenically frozen hydra soldiers and weapons. I prefer the way they ended up going with it
I saw the title and thought I jumped a month into the future again
Video Idea: Fox Quicksilver isn't Quicksilver
Video content: "He's an adaptation of Tommy Shepherd/Speed, but just named Quicksilver instead." *video ends*
But tommy is just Quicksilver but with a new name speed
I love the Zemo of the MCU but he's a completely different character than in the comics, to the point he's almost the opposite (in the comics he's hydra and MCU he's anti-hydra and fascists in general), I think the writers just really love his name... it is an awesome name :D
Zemo intensely dancing while watching this
6:14 - You forgot that most of the characters on Ironman's side were skrulls in disguise. Hank Pym is a prime example. Number 4 is Skrulls.
you're right, he's not Zemo.
He's the best dancer on the planet, protege to Bully Maguire.
his outfits are on point. if he used several of them in a movie shot right he would be legit!!!
1 month later: Zemo dancing for 1 hour.
I can't wait to see Zemo return with that mask .
These "x isn't x" are my favorite types of videos of yours! I hope we see more soon.
At 6:43, you can see Ed Brubaker in the background, writer of Captain America's comic series at the time, and the one who brought back Bucky as the Winter Soldier. Also, the co-creator of Aleksander Lukin, who you talk about in that very moment.
WOO CLASSIC NANDO TITLE
'Age of Ultron isn't Age of Ultron' could be the next, since they share almost nothing but some characters(probably days of future past have more similarity with Age of Ultron). What we have in Age of Ultron is more like, origin of Ultron(Consider Ultron's death scene is ambiguous )
Zemo doesn't feel like a word anymore after listening to you
Nando V Movies: "Zemo, isn't, Zemo."
Me: "We got what we came for. Time to head out."
Nando v movies. I haven’t heard that name in a long time. A long time.
Is it me or spider-man has a lot of russian villains?
yeah
just makes me think that zemo would be best friends with billy butcher
demitri in far from home also could just be the stereotypical spy guy named demitri. or that has some vaguely euro name and looks intimidating and is a spy
For civil war, Wolverine tried to hunt down the guy that started the whole problem. He gets to nitro and finds out he was boosted by a drug that was given to him by someone. I believe that someone was a higher up at damage control and he did it to gain money out of whatever destruction followed. I guess he could kind of be blamed for kicking it all off
I thought in the comics it was stated that Crossbones had been behind the Superhero Civil War or at the very least had set some stuff up to help it happen.
Zemo is the best club dancer.
At least Zemo's suaveness was on point tho
Daniel Bruhl is pretty much perfect for the role
Yeah I’ve always had the thought as well. Don’t get me wrong I love the MCU‘s version of Zemo, he’s a really interesting character, but he has very little to do with the comic book inspiration. Honestly I almost feel like they should’ve just made the MCU Zemo an entirely original character. Keep everything else the same about him but just change his name to something like “Zander” or something like that.
Plus that way you can have the best of both worlds by having this fascinating character who sees the avengers as no better than the villains they battle while still having room for a more traditional Zemo to be out there wreaking havoc from the shadows.
Wait, so was that Punisher run the inspiration for the comic "Wanted"? I am guessing yes, given how that writer also wrote the Civil War comics.
Heinrich Zemo’s mask actually inspired Cobra Commander!
WAT THE HELL I WAS JUST WATCHING U AND JUST THOUGHT THIS WAS ANOTHER OLD VIDEO BUT IT JUST CAME OUT GAHSHDBDU
This Zemo is more like of a Billy Butcher
9:20 "why me?" awww so sad.
So your point of these videos are that the MCU villains are amalgams of various comic supervillains?
Yes, but it's interesting to discuss which ones exactly. This show is about celebrating characters, not complaining about how they were changed.
Helmut Zemo and Thanos are the best villians in the MCU by far.
As long as they remain true to this interpretation, I'll be happy.
The thing I loved about zemo in civil war is that he didn't throw a single punch and beat the avengers.
exactly he actually won he did what no one up to that point did he beat the avengers
Little did he know.
