X-Men: First Class is a treasure and Kevin Bacon's Sabastian Shaw is an excellent villain for the film. Buuuuut he isn't really the Sebastian Shaw from the comics. So let's break down the nine other characters that make up First Class' Sebastian Shaw.

Facts. Same here. Just solidified how Fox didn’t know how to handle the X-Men franchise.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this exact way.
They should have just made Shaw Mr. Sinister instead. And then not killed him. Maybe Magneto puts a penny right through his head. And we think he's gone. Then, after the end credits; we just see a room full of Sinisters; in tanks. And one of them opens their eyes.
Then they could have killed Sinister AND saved him for later movies.
Perfect moment for the forehead diamond!!! Wow.
That would have been awesome, honestly they should do that more with comic book film villains since their reoccurring nature is a big part of the comics, but there's really only a handful of villains in both the Fox X-Men films and especially the MCU films that actually last more than one film, and that really needs to change.

@@mawinstallation6626 I mean we're getting Kang, Doctor Doom and Mephisto (probably) as well as all the Spider-Man villains they've done so far (Mysterio probably isn't dead) and I think all of them would make for great reoccurring villains.
Of course, Sebastian Shaw is the actor who played Anakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi.

In the comics Darwin does explode like he does in this film BUT it's later revealed that he didn't explode rather he became pure energy as it was the only means of survival and I was determined that THIS is what they'd do with Darwin in the X-Men films and it never happened.
I only hope Darwin is put on the main X-Men team in the MCU to make up for this crime

Personally, I was holding out for an end-credit scene of him rebuilding himself from a single cell, and that glimpse of him turning grey/silver before he blew up was permanent - giving him the comic look!
And then they didn't do that, and I realized that the flash of comic accurate look he got before he died was just the filmmakers being unnecessarily cruel 😑
@@Ashen.Elixer Yeah that was just salt on the wound. They didn't get any of the characters and it showed whenever they had minor X-Men characters, like Spike is credited as Kid Omega and one of the Ravagers is credited as Psylocke in the credits for Last Stand.
1. The villain mentioned is Unus the Untouchable, he's one of the first X-Men villains in the 60's. He can make a small force field around himself (I know this because I read my X-Men encyclopedia like the bible).
2. Number 8 is hilarious, because that act was a punishable crime.
3. Magneto's theme in First Class will always rule.
Unus had on THE saddest stories and honestly showed one of the earliest nuances with the Brotherhood in The Blob. Since he was the only one able to resist Unus' force fields. He died because his fields were so powerful they pushed away the air itself.

Well, he isn't. Justin Hammer in the comics is a scheming evil old guy who is extremely smart, even his evil plans have evil plans, nothing like the God's perfect idiot we saw in the movie. Justin Hammer in the movie is more similar to Morgan Stark and Tiberius Stone from comics.

Though Darwin didn't die in the comics, he went incorpereal after his conflict with Vulcan, right after his introduction. So you might say that Shaw is also Vulkan, because he brought Darwin closer to death than anyone else?
I guess Krakoa also fits the bill, as Darwin was supposedly killed in his first mission in Krakoa, until we learned that he survived.
And Movie Shaw and Vulcan have similar abilities, albeit at very different levels
I think you missed one. Shaw's inability to be hurt by anything but having a glaring weakness to psychic attacks that he needs to protect against with a helmet fits Juggernaut to a tee.
yea that doesnt make sense to me and he is strong yet he somehow cant defeat professor X easily, and cant just completely knockout Magneto to a point that even if he does take the helmet off Magneto wont up to do anything?

In early drafts of the script, the villain was supposed to be Mr. Sinister so that's why it feels so much like it should've been Mr. Sinister ... because originally it was.
I have the feeling that this video was made to just talk about how cool Mr. Sinister is in the comics and why he should appear in a movie

Yeah, he's more like that Friends of Humanity guy, Graydon Creed I think was his name. And of course he runs Weapon X so he's........ wait, who runs Weapon X? Although his origin with his son is somewhat comparable to Reverend Stryker, and his plan is very similar.

I was actually re-watching this film recently and during that opening scene between Shaw and young Eric it hit me, that's totally a Mister Sinister scene.
Definitely agree with "the black guy dies first" segment. I love Mathew Vaughn, but why? Studio intervention probably.
He didn't die first altogether, as far as characters go, but he was the first team mutant in the movie to die first.

The X villain I want to appear in the MCU is: Mastermind. He's quite simply a dark Xavier. A man with the same power and level as professor X. He would manage the brotherhood of mutants completely unseen, and prevent Charles Xavier from being able to stop them, and ultimately it would be revealed he was working to restore Magneto to youth using a mutant with that ability. There would be several psychic sword fights.
He's technically been in the X-men films; but was changed so much that he was unrecognizable. Striker's kid from X2? That was apparently supposed to be Mastermind.
@@frick_____you oh yeah, I forgot about that. This version I imagine would look less like a supervillain, I'm imagining Jo Lo Truglio or Charlie Day in the role, someone who doesn't look imposing but is quite sinister in the way he behaves.

With all the opportunities that Fox could of had with implementing Mr Sinister into their X-men cinematic universe, I wonder if Marvel will chose to utilise him instead for when they eventually introduce the X-men into the MCU? I would personally love that and it would be very refreshing to see a new character/villain from the X-men universe, who isn't just Magneto, Stryker, or the Dark Phoenix. I also think X-men villains like Sinister, Mojo, Omega-Red and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants should get their time to shine.

@@srstriker6420 Agreed, but if you haven't seen Legion before, I highly suggest you watch it as Shadow King is represented nearly perfectly as the main villain and is truly terrifying in the metaphysical and sociological manifestation, though despite the fact that I do not know the name of the actor that portrayed him, he still did wonderful job.
It would be very nice to see him return in the MCU or at least hinted at, when the X-men/mutants are introduced. Because Shadow King and Professor X have a very complex rivalry and Storm used to be abused as a thief for the Shadow King, which would be quite interesting to explore and to get a better understanding of who Storm/Ororo Munroe was and the turmoil she endured before being saved from the Shadow King by Charles and building ties with Wakanda.

I was really upset at X-Men first Class. Set in the 60s. Avoided addressing race like the plague. Killed the one black character unceremoniously. Happened to also be the one unkillable character.
I _know_ it’s the best X-Men movie. That just doesn’t speak well for X-Men movies.

Doesn’t mean they were planned, written or green lit the same year. The planned Magneto origin film wasn’t cancelled till 2009, and replaced with First Class, which was made in 2010. I think he meant that when they were planning First Class, they couldn’t use Zola, because the MCU had acquired the rights to use in Captain America which at that time was slated to be released a year later. They couldn’t have decided who the villain was in 2011 and have a May 2011 release date on a movie like this.

Shaw creating the Magneto helmet always seemed strange, considering the visor is shaped like a big 'M'.
Other odd stuff in 1st Class includes: Baby Mystique and her weird mass-shifting powers that somehow don't carry on into adulthood.
First Class rewrite with Nathaniel Essex as the main antagonist!
Y'know, when your script starts with "there are 9 villains Shaw's more similar to than Shaw,", and then 3 of those villains are Mr Sinister and one is nobody, it might be worth doing another draft. You could've run through all the others then built up to one big Mr Sinister segment, for instance.

The only thing I disagree with is "The best shot at faithful costumes" That closing shot (from I think Apocalypse?) In the danger room, is the best they've ever looked. And then they immediately drop them for the next movie.

@@nachoprime9649 Cyclops and Nightcrawler were perfect, and Mystique's was basically just a uniform version of her classic white dress, it looked fantastic. But yeah, I'll give you that Storm and Quicksilver's weren't very accurate.
Fun fact: Sebastian Shaw is named and modelled after Robert Shaw who played Quint on Jaws.
Top 3 crime in the X-Men movies is that Sinister was shoehorned in to be the "Thanos" instead of apocalypse. The death of Darwin, and yes, the fact that they didn't wear yellow spandex

Just wanna point this out! In the scene where Shaw is forcing Magneto to use his powers, the scene where you referenced how much he's like Mr. Sinister in the comics, Shaw is actually wearing a blue suit with a red tie. (Mr. Sinister's colors!)
The First Class theme is one of my favorites in any comic book film. The soundtrack overall is underrated.
Shaw's theme is too short. You gotta get the extended one.

8:23 Is sorta is sorta like Shaw as well. In First Class after Charles takes control of Shaw, he tells Erik that he can only hold him for so long.
Henry Jackman is the H. Jackman who has done the most for superhero films. Controversial opinion, I know.
Another character also contributed some elements to this version of Shaw: Juggernaut, whose helmet was designed to block out Charles from entering his mind.
Jackman's Magneto score is still the best villain score ever
So glad you brought the Darwin issue up in the video, along with the other black mutants throughout the XMen universe.
It's really insane when you go through the list. The other crazy thing that wasn't worth mentioning is that they are the same with Asian mutants. Blink, Agent Zero, everyone in The Wolverine, Jubilee both times. It should be so easy to make him work since Sunfire was one of the first mutants, but they don't even bother to include him.

The mutants have always been a great allegory for discrimination, yet they keep treating their diverse and sometimes their best characters like they don’t matter. Still upset about the Jubilee misuse! Hoping the MCU version rectify these mistakes!

The first time I heard about Magneto's helmet having the ability to deflect psychic attacks was the first time I was aware there was a "Magneto": in the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends cartoon. :) I wonder if the comics followed suit or it was established there beforehand?

Being a bit of a fan of the Hellfire Club, I knew Shaw wasn't accurately portrayed as Shaw, but listening to the massive list you came up with for just how NOT Shaw Shaw was, makes me want to watch the movie again, just to laugh at him.

My general assessment of this video: Mr. Sinister should have been the villain of X-Men First Class. Or if they were going with The Hellfire Club then they should have leaned all the way into it

Honestly though, I think the idea of any mutant/human that can resist psychic powers by "sheer will" without that being a perk of their mutation/super power is just dumb. Whats the point of super powers at that point? Now being able to outsmart or mentally torment a psychic intruder based on intelligence and will I could agree with.

I like how Darwin was killed off because it makes Sebastian Shaw more menacing and magneto that much more threatening and menacing when he kills Sebastian Shaw
Personally, it doesn't really matter to me if characters are accurate to the comics, as long as Logan doesn't have like Cyclops' powers or something like that. I like seeing their own takes on characters and things. Like they shouldn't change the core of the characters, but other than that I'm usually fine with that.

First class is underrated, personally it's my favorite x men movie
Completely agreed about the soundtrack. I've been listening to it since the movie's release. It's just incredible. Heck, the main reason I went to see the movie in the movie theatre TWICE was because of how incredible "Sub Lift" track sounded in combination with what was happening onscreen. It's a masterpiece.
Also overall - great video, agreed about Darwin. Never read the comics but I disliked how quickly he was killed off.

Thanks for mentioning the score. Obviously, WS and Civil War have fantastic music, but First Class is sooo underrated on that scale. Magneto’s theme is incredible.
