To anyone who reads this, My father was in the U.S.A.F. he was deployed to Korea in 1975 for 1-Year. In 1976 when I was age 15, my mother sister and I drove from Austin, Texas to Calf to a Air Force Base to pick him up and we spent our Summer vacation there, but as we went through El Paso and continued driving to Calf, I heard this beautiful song being played on the radio every few hours, I never new the name of this song or the Artist, I just always remember the last few words "FOR YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL" I searched for this today on Feb.7,2014 and I finally found it 38-Yrs later, thanks TH-cam!
Space Dog Hey Space dog it wasn't Elvis, it was Roger because I never will forget his distinctive voice and the way he sung this song, it tells a very beautiful story that I could listen to over and over!!
This song will be played at the funeral of my mother next tuesday. After 96 years of loving it will be the last farewell. But she will always be with us. Forever love you mam
I liked Roger’s voice so natural and easy to listen to, I wonder if he knew the Lord Jesus Christ? But no decision is as important as the one Jesus highlights in Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Sadly unless Roger repented for his sins and put his trust in Jesus he will not be resting in peace he will be in Hell. Where will you be going when you die? Remember none of us no that day when we will die so don’t leave it to late to find the truth!
My mum had this on 7" vinyl single, and she played it often. Eventually it got damaged and the needle kept jumping, stuck in the groove at precisely the point where Roger sings "I shall smell again... " I'll never forget that, it was hilarious to me and my sister.

Roger Whittaker was my adopted Grandma’s favorite singer. She paid for my Brother and I’s braces bc my parents couldn’t afford them and also took us to the Bahamas. Our Lutheran church’s pre-school was named after her bc she was such an inspiration to all the kids and congregation. She had a big blue Cadillac and would drive around town picking up kids of less fortune from all around the neighborhood and piled us all into her Cadillac and took us all to the neighborhood roller skating ring while always playing Roger Whittaker in her caddy. She also paid for all of our admissions and lunches at Roller Ring bc none of us had any money nor our parents. This while she sat for hours watching us all roller skate 🛼 having so much fun. This is in late 70’s. Her name was Marion McMannis; my mum was holding her hand when she passed. We all loved her so much and she too loved us all so dearly! May God Bless her soul!

Was with a coach load of fellow country music fans from the UK on a tour in the US in 1996. We were at a bar at the top of one of the hotels at Myrtle Beach, SC and a duo started singing this song. The whole group joined in and blasted the song out. The duo loved it, and it was a fabulous moment. RIP Roger.
Written by Ron Webster from Birmingham England. A Silversmith, he was travelling home on a bus, one cold and rainy night from Birmingham's jewellery quarter, wishing he was somewhere warmer. He sent the lyrics to Roger and the rest is history.

You could nearly smell the sea when listening to this wonderful song, rest now Rodger, you deserve it, a voice like dark honey dripping from a spoon, you might have left "the building" but you will always be on my playlist, thank you sir.🙏❤
todas sus canciones son un recuerdo de tu musica tu voz extraordinaria , te recordare por siempre , gracias roger por siempre.....de este lejano pais chile te digo adios , que estes en gloria...
I first listened to this song in the kitchen with my mother and uncle some 40 years ago. They sat there shortly after their mom had passed reminiscing about her life and how they missed her. I never imagined one day this song would trigger such powerful memories and emotions. Time is so fleeting, given the chance to go back i would tell that little boy to savour that moment and tell them both how much I loved them both.
My 97 yr old mother who suffers from dementia, sings all the words to this wonderful song, even though she can't remember what I told 10 min. ago. He was one if her favorites along with Eddie Arnold
Roger had three Top 20 hits in the UK in 1969-70 ("The Leaving" (Durham Town)", "I Don't Believe In If Anymore" and "New World In The Morning"). It was wonderful to see "The Last Farewell" climb to No.2 in 1975.
Dear dad, in these Covid times you lost (or won) your battle to cancer. This beautiful song reminds me of your funeral but most of all of you. You stayed true to yourself and beliefs, authentic. This warm voice of Roger Whitaker reminds me of you. Both blessed souls. A masterpiece of a song. Tears for you.
Ein Gentleman der uns mit seiner Musik stets an die wahren Werte im Leben erinnert. Er stellt die meisten „Musiker“ in den Schatten. Danke für all die starken Lieder ❤😢
I cant get through this song without crying . My dad (and so many others) was only 17 yrs old when he enlisted in the Army. The depression made it nearly impossible to survive and the Military was his way out of poverty. He had 7 Brothers and 1 Sister. WW2 was happening and THANK GOD it ended before he was deployed to battle or, I may not have been here today. He loved this song. He was also a musician. He loved his music, his kids, his life and the fact he worked so hard to give us a great life asking nothing of us in return there was nothing or, anyone more precious to him than my Mom. He loved my Mom more than life itself and for 50 yrs they were together until he passed away on New Year's Eve 2010. For 4 months before he passed away I kept seeing 1111 and I have continued to see it the past 14 years 2 or 3 times a week . Right before he slipped into a coma it came to my mind the number 1111 and I said "Dad please don't die on January 1st 2011 I don't want my New Year's to be sad every year moving forward thinking of you passing away on that day." He passed away 12 31 2010 3 hours before 1.1.11. This was the song that I picked for one of his songs at his funeral. I had the greatest parents a girl could ever ask for and I miss my parents every single day. My mom passed away in July 2016 and what's really strange is my mom died on the same day as my dad's mother did 49 yrs prior to her death in1967! Peace. ❤
My Dad is a huge Roger Whittaker fan too. He's 72 and healthy at present, but I know he can't live forever. My deepest condolences on the loss of your father.
Amen to that! My dads song WW2 Vet! Navy Pearl Harbor his ship was torpedoed and he was one of the few to survive. He was a gunner on the ship! Dec. 1942
@@S_Lancaster_222 Hello! My dad was also at Pearl Harbor. His ship was the Pennsylvania which was in the dry dock and received damage and several of his shipmates died...in April it was repaired enough to sail to San Francisco ...while swabbing the deck he watched a carrier sail by with large planes aboard. A couple of weeks later he found out who / what those planes were! They were the Dolittle raiders!! What history. A long time ago but in your heart it was yesterday.. I miss my dear father like crazy and he comes into my dreams sometimes and I get to talk with him again. Now here I am at 68 years of age crying like a little girl.

I am a 92 year old. Have loved his voice for ever. I to long for the more honest hard working times of the past. People were satisfied with life. They enjoyed simple pleasures and looked after their neighbours in hard times. Now neighbours hardly speak to neighbours. And people want more and more.
One of the greatest songs of the 70's, but this is not the original (and the best) 45 version. One of the greatest singers of all time. Thank you, Bwana, for the fabulous memories of 1975.
There are certain songs that no other should ever try singing and this is 1 of them big time. Masterfully performed by a LEGEND with a beautiful and moving voice.
I am 50 now but would listen to this song as a child when my parents would play it. It always swept me away to fantastic places. The song itself a journey.
I first listened to The Last Farewell in High School in Guyana in the mid 70s ...what dreams we had in a sleepy village in Guyana to dream of England !!! Lol..These were the songs that gave us a peculiar joy of believing that you were special and had some greater purpose in God's good earth !!!!
Never heard this song before, until yesterday 27/11/24. Now will always love this even though it hurts This was my nanas last song at her funeral. She came to England- Germany aged 12 just after the war 1946 Goodbye nana ❤ you are beautiful R.I.P
This song is a classic, sung by a true gentleman, with a great voice, and remember at one time the British were the greatest Ship Builders in the world
I was brought upon on rodger whittaker. My wonderful dad and mum are no longer here but when I go on long walks I play his albums and it brings me peace and takes me back to happy times spent with my family. He has an amazing voice. ❤x
You are shameful, pascal. Remember, what you put out there comes back to you. Be careful of your words today - may they be sweet words, as tomorropw you may need to eat them.
I arrived in London on Apr21, 1970 for a 2 1/2 year tour at RAF Bentwaters. Despite not knowing a pound from a shilling I was treated honestly in my journey by bus, taxi and train to Suffolk. On the train to Ipswich, a British businessman offered to drive myself and the other USAF airman to our base, going out of his way to do so....thank you sir ! About a week later, a group of us went out for a few beers and went to "The Ship" in Suffolk where there was a group of people singing to music played on a piano. What nice people, they welcomed us to join them and shared their sandwiches with us. We were young Americans about 19 years old and far from home, but these people made us feel right at home. I've forgotten a lot about my time in England but their warmth and kindness will always be with me. The memories of the pubs, the beautiful scenery and the friendly people ( not necessarily in that order LOL ) will remain with me always. I was fortunate to meet many people while in England, and I can honestly say that they were nice people with a great sense of humor and I enjoyed their company. This New York City boy says "Thank You" to the people of England
Yes where people helped all the World and men are the best there is nothing better than a white Englisman we are getting fewer and the memories will never be the same as men of the British calibre a few now
john, what a lovely tribute, yes we are a friendly and generous people, as regards pubs, i'm afraid they are closing down at an alarming rate, although i am lucky i guess as i live in a village in lancashire tha boasts six pubs and i'm a regular in all of them. doing my bit for the brewing industry you see.
My grandmothers favorite song. My Grandfather was a sailor who fought the enemy in WW1. My father who was involved with the Fleet Air Arm in the Suez and the Far East fleet of the 50's. My great great great great Grandfather who was a whaling ship Captain who navigated, charted and explored Antarctica and her Grandson (me) who did his bit in the Gulf of the 90's HMCS Regina. She was proud of us all. Love you Granny.
Sang this watching a Royal Marine band concert in Portsmouth with lads from other ships A few months later we were in the cold seas of the Falklands. Some of those lads didn't come back. Gone but not forgotten lads !!!

But no decision is as important as the one Jesus highlights in Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
Sadly unless Roger repented for his sins and put his trust in Jesus he will not be resting in peace he will be in Hell.
Where will you be going when you die? Remember none of us know that day when we will die so don’t leave it to late to find the truth!
Anyone else listening to this lovely classic on 3--11-2021? My father liked this guy's style of singing. Miss my Dad.
I'm here on the 12th. Story of my life. Day late and a dollar short.
@@garyfuiten5126 A day late??? Well, I TOTALLY forgot about this song and the guy that sings it! Happened upon by accident. What was the year? 1973---1976? He did another song (if I recall correctly) that my father liked. Dad speaking to me from some place else ???Hmmmm!
I am. It is March 16, 2021. Greetings from the Philippines!
Me, love it
Docked here in Old England on the 20th March 2021!
A fitting tribute to Roger Whitaker, may he rest in peace.
You could nearly smell the sea when listening to this wonderful song, rest now Rodger, you deserve it, a voice like dark honey dripping from a spoon, you might have left "the building" but you will always be on my playlist, thank you sir.🙏❤
What a terrific posting...thank you!
Agreed. A great paen to the Royal Navy. I swear that"s Captain Aubrey in the video
I'm South African. My great grandfather was from County Cork. Great song.
todas sus canciones son un recuerdo de tu musica tu voz extraordinaria , te recordare por siempre , gracias roger por siempre.....de este lejano pais chile te digo adios , que estes en gloria...
One of the most heartwarming and heartbreaking songs ever sung. And no one could have sung it better than Roger Whitaker.
YES!!!
I agree. The mix of emotions.
My father loved this song. When I start missing him alot, I'll play it and it just makes me smile and feel closer to him. 💙
I totally understand and may I say. You have a very big heart.
Wow, I just peeked at you page. You like good music. That tells a lot about a person. Plus you are very pretty.
Me too. It was also my father’s favorite. May 14th was the 2nd anniversary of his passing.
@@thomascoon1235 wow, May 16th, tomorrow, is the anniversary of my dad's passing
My Dad did too
This was my grandpa's favorite song. He was a pearl harbor survivor.
Salute. to Brave Soldiers!!🌹
Wow, how special is that. I'm sure that pain stayed with him forever but also how gratefuk he was that he survived.
Vale Roger. This song will be my main funeral song!!!
Rest in peace, Mr. Whittaker. I grew up listening to your records, my dad was a big fan. Thank you for the memories
He was one of the best singers of the world
My grandma died around 35 years ago when I was young. She played this song to me once and I always remembered the repeated line. Found it years later.
My 97 yr old mother who suffers from dementia, sings all the words to this wonderful song, even though she can't remember what I told 10 min. ago. He was one if her favorites along with Eddie Arnold
How wonderful in the kindest way!!
Dennis, this song is kind of sad, but to your mother it probably has a fond memory. 😊
God bless her.
beautiful how a terrible disease give some solace
✨🕊✨
Very, very touching a Tribute. 🙏
🙏🙏🙏
we also played this for my fathers funeral last month. A great song and i'm sorry for you loss.
Amen amen
I have loved this song since I was a teenager when it came out. It’s just so beautiful!
Fantastic tune and lyrics.
Rest in Peace - you have indeed made som fantastic music, Mr. Whitaker ❤
Ein Gentleman der uns mit seiner Musik stets an die wahren Werte im Leben erinnert. Er stellt die meisten „Musiker“ in den Schatten. Danke für all die starken Lieder ❤😢
Most underrated singer ever. I love his singing. Clear voice, beautiful songs.
He passed away now :(
I cant get through this song without crying . Peace. ❤
My wee dad passed away last week, and i find myself sitting here listening to his favorite songs which is quite comforting.
Rest easy dad, rest easy.
xcvzxdv...all will be well.
live the life he gave you to the full, and enjoy,
My Dad is a huge Roger Whittaker fan too. He's 72 and healthy at present, but I know he can't live forever. My deepest condolences on the loss of your father.
That's a nice sentiment. A good way to remember your father and to keep him in your heart. God Bless.
***** nice thought Paul. Our parents pass on hundreds of interesting and valuable thoughts when we are young , and much gets lost and forgotten.
What a haunting song of bygone times, truly a classic by a master with one of the richest voices of our times............
My late husband was Navy
For 30 years I lived this ever time he shipped out. Love this song.
Amen to that! My dads song WW2 Vet! Navy Pearl Harbor his ship was torpedoed and he was one of the few to survive. He was a gunner on the ship! Dec. 1942
I’m addictted!😊
@@S_Lancaster_222 Hello! My dad was also at Pearl Harbor. His ship was the Pennsylvania which was in the dry dock and received damage and several of his shipmates died...in April it was repaired enough to sail to San Francisco ...while swabbing the deck he watched a carrier sail by with large planes aboard. A couple of weeks later he found out who / what those planes were! They were the Dolittle raiders!! What history. During the war he flew rescue planes...We had heros for fathers🇺🇸🇺🇸🦋🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸☺️☺️☺️☺️🎶🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Suzanne Lancaster 👍🏻🇺🇸1941. My Dad also, Navy. Fought in the South Pacific, WWII.
My dad was a big Rodger Whittaker fan so I was reared on his music I now am a big fan.. love his voice..and all his songs..
Brilliant
My Dad used to sing this to me..he died 40 years ago when I was only a kid..but when I hear this,he's singing to me again.
God has blessed you BOTH!
With our special music, one can close their eyes and MAGIC, we can be with our loved ones if only for a few minutes, but how wonderful
@@geraldnovak5042 - That was potentially the most beautiful sentiment I've ever had the privilege of reading in my 50 years of life!!!!!!! CHEERS!
A long time ago but in your heart it was yesterday.. I miss my dear father like crazy and he comes into my dreams sometimes and I get to talk with him again.
Now here I am at 68 years of age crying like a little girl.
@@Araconox - May the good Lord above bless you while He keeps the company of your dearly departed father until your time comes (whenever that may happen) for you to go and join him in eternity!!!!!!!
I pray for the both of you.......
I’ve been listening to this song with a 96 yr old widow. He sings all the lyrics and it brings a tear to my eye 🥲
Gods peace be with you both.
Thats so special. Giant Hugs to him
I am a 92 year old.
And surely this should have been the main theme for either Hornblower or Aubrey
Despite all the current dificulties,England remains the land of hope and glory.great to have you by our side.I salute you from the netherlands😊
I grew up on the song and just learned the singer recently bid us farewell. Rest easy Roger 🙏🏽!
There are certain songs that no other should ever try singing and this is 1 of them big time. Masterfully performed by a LEGEND with a beautiful and moving voice.
R.I.P. Roger Whittaker !!!
@@jamesparker4727 He isn't dead.
@@jeaustardeau5718 TY. You are correct!
Agreed mate.
The first version I ever heard was by Elvis
Godspeed Roger, may the wind forever fill your sails..
I am 50 now but would listen to this song as a child when my parents would play it. It always swept me away to fantastic places. The song itself a journey.
Same
Me too!!!

"Your age does not matter. 👀😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
@@johndavid5618 Well within the context of my story it does :) But generally age doesn't matter, agreed.
A place in my heart at this time ghana and you
We played this at my Fathers Funeral last year over a montage of pictures of his 89 year life as RW was his favourite.
Never heard this song before, until yesterday 27/11/24. Now will always love this even though it hurts This was my nanas last song at her funeral. She came to England- Germany aged 12 just after the war 1946 Goodbye nana ❤ you are beautiful R.I.P
I have loved this song since Roger Whittaker recorded it; no other cover comes close 💖
Elvis did a really good cover of it.
@@donwenger2616 But Elvis wasn't in Roger's vocal league. Jim Reeves was another one in a million singer. Check out his song, Guilty.
@@donwenger2616 Elvis destroyed the song...absolutely terrible version.
@donwenger2616 yes Elvis is a great singer I love ❤️ all his 🎶 music 🎶,
Roger's voice keeps me calm when life is stormy and heaving around me.
This song is a classic, sung by a true gentleman, with a great voice, and remember at one time the British were the greatest Ship Builders in the world
Yes and the Irish/Scottish as well, yes? ❤
I was brought upon on rodger whittaker. My wonderful dad and mum are no longer here but when I go on long walks I play his albums and it brings me peace and takes me back to happy times spent with my family. He has an amazing voice. ❤x
Merry X mas shelley! 🎉😊
RIP to a superb singer.
I am only 30..but accidently got this song..how beautiful..when its compare to today music...excellent ----thank you...
How does one accidentally get a song?
This is a timeless beauty
you have Classy taste!
Yes Roger Whitaker makes this a masterpiece, but the orchestra is soooo full and rich. It's a perfect mix.
I think this was also a well done video. Have a wonderful day! 🕊️
Knappe compositie... knap gezongen... mooi lied! Evergreen!
So many memories in this song. I’m smiling and quietly crying at the same time.
RIP Roger. This song and your voice have brought years of joy to millions of people. Thank you Roger.
I am 70 years old and this man's voice brings back many fond memories for me. I could listen to him all day.
None of us get prettier as we get older but we can be beautiful. You have a long long way to go.
im not agree there, many of us get prettier as the year go bye. same as the old good wine. . bye from Norway
more to life than that
You are shameful, pascal. Remember, what you put out there comes back to you. Be careful of your words today - may they be sweet words, as tomorropw you may need to eat them.

One of the most heartwarming as well as heartbreaking songs ever. And no one sings it better than Roger Whitaker.
That is the country we are
John D well said
Yes where people helped all the World and men are the best there is nothing better than a white Englisman we are getting fewer and the memories will never be the same as men of the British calibre a few now
john, what a lovely tribute, yes we are a friendly and generous people, as regards pubs, i'm afraid they are closing down at an alarming rate, although i am lucky i guess as i live in a village in lancashire tha boasts six pubs and i'm a regular in all of them. doing my bit for the brewing industry you see.

Tearfully beautiful song - absolutely haunting. Heard Roger in concert decades ago - a truly remarkable entertainer.

Many thanks to you sir, and your illustrious ancestors.
