When I was young, a friends father would play Roger Whittaker records on a very expensive sound system. I was knocked out by the quality of this mans voice, and it's stayed with me for 40 years. I saw Mutiny on the Bounty in my 20's and marvelled at Brando's ease (and apparent fun) in playing an English naval officer in the age of sail. At work 15yrs down the line, I became friends with someone who'd been on the island at the time of filming - she'd only been a girl - but she said Brando's charm was just indescribable.... Thankyou for whoever put this together.

Beauty, innocence and love so gorgeously interwoven and from a time when love was from the heart and the human voice could stir the heart. This setting and this song with Roger Whittaker's peerless voice tops anything else I've seen on You Tube. Thank you Music Video Vault.
Love this song and movie. I remember this song playing on the radio in the 70's and it really paints the lyrical picture well. This song also resonates on a personal level as it depicts a story very much like ones handed-down through my family background. the only difference... the English sailor came back & married my Grandma, settling down on the family Island in the end 👌. Though the song has been covered by other artists, I think Roger Whittaker's voice/version is by far the best. Thanks for posting this video and song 😇👏
Thanks for sharing that Ellen. Music will always have that magic within itself to not only provide memories we each have, but bring ppl together with an unseen connection that starts from within each of our own hearts. I just wanted to say that, and wish you all the positive vibes and a blessed life as well.
Gorgeous orchestration and Roger Whittaker has a great voice with perfect inflection and such a smooth delivery. Always one of my all-time favorites. David
I immigrated to Thailand 6 years ago, I have used the lines, Far away from your land of endless sunshine, To my land full of rainy skies and gales, numerous times to explain to friends and family in the UK why I will never return to England. Unlike the character in this song, I would never leave my wife and this wonderful country to return to a country I no longer view as my home.
A magnificent gem from an incredibly fabulous year! Roger’s only charted U.S. hit. There are countless remakes of this song floating around the Web but the best of them all is this one - the elusive, original 45 version that played on the radio. THANK YOU for it. Released on March 22, 1975 reaching #19 on June 21. It i not from 1971!
When I was watching the biographical "Listen to Me, Marlon Brando" and it was showing his love of Tahiti ( and other Islands ) I swear I was thinking of THIS SONG! I am so glad someone made a video of it. Brilliant. I loved that song even as a youngster and I still do.
Video shows scenes from the film "Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)" with Marlon Brando. I have never seen this film myself so I checked it on Imdb. The Hawaïan female playing opposite Brando was Tarita Teriipaia. She married Brando in 1962 and though they later divorced, she bore him two children.

This is my interpretation of this song: To me it is about a 19th-century son of an English nobleman who is living in a British colony in the tropics (this is the heyday of the British Empire) and has fallen in love with a native girl (just like the characters in this video!) He has just received word that his father has died and therefore must return to England because, among other things, per the customs of the time he must marry a proper English woman in order to provide the next heir to the title. He believes that regardless of whoever he marries, he will never be able to love her like he loved that native girl. The war references refer to him serving in the British military when he was a few years younger and experiencing active duty. The song has a generic setting meant to be a general era and does not refer to any historical events.
I heard of this song but I didn't see this movie version of the Bounty. I thought this was 1980's as the quality seems to be 80's or even 90's. So this is actually a 1962 movie and that actor is Marlon Brando? Unbelievable.

I was on 4 ships on both the East & West coasts, 2-1/2 yrs in Guantanamo Cuba, from Virginia to Beirut, thru the Panama Canal to California, and as far from Calif to the Persian Gulf. Stationed in Maryland, Florida and Colorado as well. I was 84 yrs old in July. Yes, I was a young 17 when I enlisted in the US Navy.
Tarita Teriipaia, who played Brando's love interest in Mutiny on the Bounty, became his third wife on August 10, 1962. She was twenty years old, 18 years younger than Brando, who was reportedly delighted by her naïveté. Because Teriipaia was a native French speaker, Brando became fluent in the language and gave numerous interviews in French. Brando and Teriipaia had two children together: Simon Teihotu Brando (born 1963) and Tarita Cheyenne Brando (1970-1995). Brando also adopted Teriipaia's daughter, Maimiti Brando (born 1977) and niece, Raiatua Brando (born 1982). Brando and Teriipaia divorced in 1972. Both never married again.
