  • This is the intro video for my most recent project, a 1958 Chevy Bel-Air 4 door hardtop. In the video I describe how I got it, and the plans for the car. Keep checking back for updates!

    the reason the radio takes so long to start is because its a tube type and it has to "warm up"

    Old tube radio! the tubes have to warm up before it plays that's why there was a delay...also the extra tires and rims were probably for snow tires back in the day the didn't have radial tires.

      I'm impressed that the vibrator in the radio wasn't stuck! That's a real plus! A really beautiful car. When I was a teenager we had it's bigger cousin, a '58 Buick Special. It wasn't extremely fast but on the highway it was hard to beat the ride.

    I had a '58 Pontiac back in the mid '70s. Getting clips to reinstall the chrome trim as quite an ordeal. Hopefully, someone makes them now. Nice car!

    I know it's before your time, but the tubes in the radio have to warm up to work. Back in the day when you turned your tv on, it would take 15 to 20 seconds before the picture came up. The tubes had to warm up!

    I notice at 6:00, you had the key on the "on" position. Use the "acc" position to the left of "off" when you want to listen to the radio when the engine is off, otherwise it may harm your ignition system. "On" is only for when the engine is running.

    I normally don't care for 4 doors except for the '58 Chevy. Yours looks very nice. I bought a '63 Pontiac Grand Prix which has 67K miles. It came out of a Pontiac Collection. The owner pssed and the widow sold the collection. I had to fix a valve in the A/C and 2 weeks later, the trans took a dump. Got an adapter and installed a 350th. The motor was rebuilt to GTO specs 3K miles ago

    Fix the rust on the passenger side fender so that it matches the driver side.The floor pan and chassis are very solid and it was never driven North of the mason Dixon line or the road salt would have caused extensive rust damage.Great car and should make an awesome cruiser.

    Cars like this are hard to find and should not be fitted with "upgrades". Keep it as is with maybe a respray. the chrome looks great as does the interior. Drum brakes are fine. You wont be doing 80mph and doing emergency stops in her so not necessary.

    very rare factory A/C and in a 4-door hard-top at that .... I've been fixing & restoring cars since 1950 guy and have never seen one on any '58 Chev. Has the early Harrison Freon compressor first seen on early Cads. Car does have the more common PS with the pump on the back of the generator which when it freezes-up, shears-off the back of the armature shaft and it is now junk. Probably has a Turbo-Glide trans which should be changed out and a reliable Power- Glide installed. Nice find.

    My very first car was the same but white with aqua accents. I was 15 and was ecstatic. The car LOOKED flawless - cherry and paid $50 from a dealership. I drove it home (no problems) and parked it in front of our house and ........it never ran again.
    I had my sister's expert mechanic boyfriend check it out and he said the compression was shot and there was sawdust in the transmission.
    I decided to save my meager wages and replace the engine and transmission but never got that far.
    My mother got tired of it sitting in front of the house for three months and, after I flatly refused to get "rid' of it, she put it in neutral, rolled it down the hill and smashed it into a stone retaining wall.
    She really LIKED my second car though - a 1960 Black Sunliner convertible with red leather interior and every bell and whistle. She ended up driving it more than me!

    Super nice '58. You will have a lot of fun driving it, and it won't need much to be a fun driver. IMO, you really don't need to change to disk brakes. As long as you remember it is not a newer Corvette, and drive it like Chevrolet engineered it, you will have no trouble with safely stopping. The original state of the car is what will be the most fun. I have a number of cars with drum brakes and have no issues, just leave a little more stopping distance. I'm not really a Chevy guy, even though I have an all original 1973 C 10 Cheyene Super that is a great truck and only sees summers, but I have always really liked the '58 Bel Air's and Biscaynes. Great find. Post more videos of the old girl!!

      I had a 58 Biscayne 4 door 1968-70 when I was in college. It was also coral and white. None of us had any money (poor students), and we all drove 50s "beaters". If it died, you just got another one (usually for less than $100). My roommate had a 59 Ford Galaxie that was so bad on gas he called it Captain Pig. At the time, nobody thought to restore those old beasts. Today, they are art on wheels. Nice to see young guys like Ben taking automotive history seriously.

    In 1970 a friend of mine was working in a gas station and told the owner he needed to buy a used car. The owner told him about a "Little old lady that used her car to go to church and the grocery store". Really. It was that color and had Very low mileage on it. The Original tires still had the little "Hairs" on them from the mold and the cardboard in the truck had never been touched. He got it for cheap and drove it for a long time.

    Nice car! I just picked one of these up today. 58 4 door sport sedan with the 348. Mine has a lot more rust since it was stored outside for awhile before being moved into a garage and the drivers door window was left down so unfortunately the interior and floor pans on passenger and drivers side are rusted through and will have to be replaced. The trunk is also pretty bad. But I got the car to turn over today with the ten year old battery that was in it, so I am confident it will start with a new battery. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you spend for this one?

    Factory or dealer installed air conditioning?

    • @TheCorvetteBen
      @TheCorvetteBen  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is factory air. There are two ways you can tell. First it says AC on the firewall tag. Also most aftermarket systems had a huge ugly box installed under the dash, looking like an afterthought. The vents on the dash as you can see look like they belong.

    • @gojoe283
      @gojoe283 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheCorvetteBen Cool. I drive a '66 Corvair 4 door hardtop which has the Fisher body code and engine suffix indicating factory air. These old A/C Chevys are very rare. Keep in mind that people bought hardtops so they could open all the windows and get convertible-like ventilation, so such cars with factory A/C are RARE! Enjoy your car, it looks like a real beauty :-)

    I just don't see why people don't care for these cars anymore! The newer generation cars don't even have wings like these cars do, such a shame to see these cars rusting away in junkyards.

      i love em, i even love 4 doors too now, and no i wouldnt consider converting then to 2 door anymore. theyre getting so old and rare, that 4 doors are looking almost as beautiful as 2 doors, and are waay too old to just hack up, especially when theyre as nice shape as this one.

      Vanboneio \ | GTA 5 and other games community channel | / wow, thats a pretty rare cool looking car man. they just dont make em the way they used too. cars used to have elegance and style,but now they are just appliances.

      Exactly! but since the auto industry didn't sell many of them. (don't know why) they just cancelled the entire project and started making newer cars with more Tech and low style. And i did more searching and according to the sale's list and factory line-up only 3673 Of these were made! so definitely these are RARE :D

      A lot if people bitch and say to destroy all 4 doors. Those are the people who for one, are not real car enthusiasts, and two will be the death of classic cars. 4 doors are still just as badass as a 2 door in my opinion, especially on a belair

    Esse veículo chevrolet não é um Bel-Air, e sim, um Chevrolet Biscayne 1958.

      It is a Bel-Air, says so on the rear fenders and on the glove box. Look at the video.
