I bought one of those used for $250 back on 27 January, 1967. I was eighteen, and it was my first car. I was a green kid, and I did not know very much about cars, especially used ones. The road locomotive had 111, 000 miles on it, and it was a worn out piece of junk. Both tailpipes and mufflers needed to be replaced. The power steering had lost its power. The freeze plugs were leaking. The automatic transmission leaked. The radiator needed replacement. The tyres needed replacement and the front end needed re-alignment for $9.65. It was a mess. When I had sold it back to a dealer in October of that year, I had invested over $500 beyond the original price and by then the front end was about to fall out. For selling the old lemon, I got back $50. Old clunkers are not worth having.
Oddly, in these modern times, cars seem to last much longer. I bought my currently owned 2006 Ford Ranger pickup new on the day after Christmas, 2005. The heater no longer works and would cost into four figures to repair, but the truck runs like a top with more than 151,000 miles on it. It is using the original spark plugs and the original muffler and tailpipe.
