Thank you this was the exact problem.... Had green corrosion on the contacts with the red wires that I believe they call the clock spring.... I brought it to my local garage 1 year ago and they said the clock spring was fine cause they put it on the computer.. They did not take it apart like you and I did... Because of your knowledge my horn is now working... It has taken 2.5-3.0 years to figure this out... But I guess if I were smart enough to watch your video in the first place then it would have been fixed long ago... A big shout out and thank you again, Jon in Maine

Thank you for this video demonstrating how to evaluate the possible issues of a non-working horn. The horn in my 2003 Chevy Suburban stopped working and through the viewing of this video I found the dirt built up in the assembly. I am really glad it wasn't more!

Worked great! I cleaned everything as you mentioned and that spring contact didn’t look too bad. I just stretched the spring a little instead of the solder trick and it worked perfectly. Thanks!

  • @corder13

For those that have done this and the horn still doesn’t work, it’s possible the multifunction switch is at fault. That was my issue. There is a small button on it that touches a ring on the steering wheel. Mine was worn down. Once I replaced the switch, it worked perfectly. However, make sure to go with a factory part on this. Otherwise the buttons wear down VERY quickly. The first one lasted a few months before it wore down (made of soft brass on the cheap ones, I believe).

Great video! I was shown a long time ago to use an eraser to clean electrical contacts. It removes any corrosion or tarnish (on silver plated contacts) by burnishing them without damaging them. Sandpaper can remove plating, and possibly embed silica from the paper, into the contact, damaging them.

Thank you for this! Fixed my horn issue. Tested horn by using the alarm first and worked so knew it must be at the wheel. My contact at the end of the spring had a hardened glue like substance on it that i sanded off. Also looked like the same in the slot, so wrapped a bit of sandpaper on a small screwdriver and rotated it in the slot till the contact looked clean again. Voila! Thx

Casey, thank you thank you, thank you!!!! You just saved me another trip to the mech shop where he "supposedly" had fixed it before at a cost of $132.00 pr hr. BUT, taking that center hub on the steering wheel was sooooooo easy, thanks to you!!! I wiggled around the center wire with the brass tip and it worked. When I'm back from holidays I'll see about adding a touch of soder to it to improve the contact. I suspect that's likely the problem.
Again, I really appreciate your clear instructions. Invaluable.

Thanks for the great tips. You directed me well in fixing my 2007 Silverado horn issue. I plead guilty to not disconnecting the battery or the airbags. I know that would generally be wise and a good safety measure. i do live on the edge. Nonetheless you got my problem taken care of.

@Casy (or someone who knows), I suspect I have the same issue you did. Can you elaborate some more about this brass ring that power comes from the turn signal assembly and out to the assembly behind the air bag through the white plastic plunger with two red wires (which seems to be the source of most peoples problems - or the actual spring loaded contact points). I anticipate
    1) I have to remove the clock spring from the steering column to get at the brass ring
    2) the white with red wires plunger assembly goes through the steering wheel contacts one side of the brass ring.
    3) there is a plunger on the turn signal assembly that touches the other side of the brass ring bringing part of the horn relay circuit out to the ground contact assembly behind the air bag.
    4) do I need any tools to remove the brass ring so I can clean both sides of it and clean the contact on the turn signal assembly? or does it simply lift out once the clock spring is removed?
    5) did you solder tip of the turn signal assembly plunger pin to extend it, or the tip of the white plastic assembly with two red wires, or both? (once I have gotten that much apart I intend to do both - given they are both spring assemblies it cant hurt (other than the worn filaments of solder getting into something else).
This thread goes a bit beyond what is covered in the video: www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/254800-horn-not-working-replaced-steering-wheel-horn-contact-still-no-horn-clock-spring/#google_vignette
I did like the video, lots of useful diagnostic info, just not enough to solve my horn issue.
Note that while the horn circuit runs through the clockspring - the clockspring is not part of the circuit. Don't let anyone mislead you there. At least that is the case on a 2001 Tahoe.

So, it turns out mine had the exact same issue. The ground to the relay wouldn't work because the contact was worn down. I put some solder on it and it was good to go. I did get sidetracked on the wiring, found out my 2005 Sierra has dual horns. The left horn is behind the left headlight assembly just down a bit. That needs to be mentioned as both my wires on the right horn read less than 1 ohm because the left horn was still connected. My truck is fixed now. Thank you

Great video. My horn only works when the steering wheel is in the 1 o'clock position. I looked at the contact with the spring, and it was clean. I did stretch the spring, to give it a little more contact. I haven't yet used sandpaper to clean the 4 other contacts. If cleaning the 4 contacts doesn't fix the issue, should I replace the clock spring? Thanks in advance

Fuses and relays are working perfectly. I can get the horn with another method so it’s not the horn, just no ground in the steering wheel. Any advice? Thx
