How *not* to change fuel filter (i.e. how i did it): 1) 1 hour of pulling on fuel lines, trying to figure out how the clamps work. 2) 1 hour of trying different household pliers, screwdrivers and whatnot to undo the clamps. 3) Fuel lines undone at last, drench everything around (yourself included) in petrol. Bonus points for petrol in eyes, mouth and any open wounds sustrained during point 2. 4) Inserting new filter real quick and suspiciously easy, expecting the car to catch fire for next week or so. 5) After surviving the one week period without any major fire and/or sudden fuel line defect, filter change can finally be called succesful.
I am a self taught mechanic and these videos are just great, I wish they would have been around some 10-15 years ago when I started playing with cars, they would have saved me a lot of headaches lol
Me too I suspect that my fuel filter is faulty it's cheap enough to try that first mechanics didn't relieve the pressure and it squirted all over they were doing a fuel pressure test they put it back together and it ran fine they don't know what was wrong next day it broke down and traffic and I had to pay $140 tow bill to bring it home so I'm going to replace a fuel filter cheapest place to start

I just did this on my '82 VW Rabbit and it worked great! I'm really impressed at how the acceleration improved! Even when downshifting the engine runs noticeably smoother. For $13 (cost of the Bosch filter), that's the best bang for the bucks I could get! :D Also, the trick of removing the fuel pump relay was smart, I only got about 1 tablespoon of gas spilled! The only unexpected thing I had was that, after changing the filter, even after turning the key to the ON position for a few seconds, I had trouble starting the engine, I had to press the gas pedal for the engine to start. I guess there was air in the filter, because after a 20 minutes ride, the car restarted without any problem. Your videos are great. My brother refuses to take his vehicles to a mechanic. He has had vehicles that would have an issue and he would change parts to try and find which part is bad. He would sometimes find the problem right away and other times he would spend a lot on replacing several parts before finding the problem. There are some things he has to let a mechanic do, but he always try’s to figure it out himself. I told him to watch your videos. He drive trackor trailer and is home one weekend a month and so his truck sits most of the time, I would be surprised if he puts more then 500 miles a year on it. His biggest issue is regular maintenance. He believes that since it sits so much that he doesn’t need to do regular maintenance on it. I just told him to watch your videos, he could learn a lot.
Thanks so much for this. First time I've had to remove a fuel filter today and I think the original had been left on the car it's whole life! (19 years). Absolute nightmare I was about to give up on until I found this vid and you mentioned the hook/toothpick idea. After a bit of brute force and jiggery pokery - she's off and the new one's in! Also renewed the screws and nuts holding it on (thanks to my mate with a jar of PC spares) as the originals were so ancient. The tool we used wasn't perfect and we slightly damaged the end of the fuel hoses getting them off, but with the new retaining things on nice and tight it doesn't seem to have had any ill effects. I'm gonna invest in a hook tool for this purpose now! Thanks again!
Just changed my fuel filter yesterday on my 1997 Suzuki Baleno 1.8L and nothing exploded. So thanks for the tips. It was easy but I was still concerned that I might mess it up but I took my time and it went flawlessly.

Great video as usual =] My one suggestion is that next time you explain how to loosen the hoses with pliers (when necessary), please be sure to also emphasize caution when twisting and applying pressure - because sometimes you can break/crack the hose (as I'm sure you know). Thanks!

ChrisFix , I would respectively like to suggest an alternative ,for those who may not have a dental pick,which has worked for me in a few occasions.I used a very wide flat screwwdriver at the same spot where you inserted your pick and pryed out the hose a few centimeters just enough to break the initial sticking and after that just used exactly your twist and pull technique. Thank you Chrisfix for your videos and I just want to show my gratitude to you by sharing a few of my experiences.
Your videos motivate me sometimes. The one on my Mazda is over due and I've been putting it off. I didn't realize how cheap they were so I bought mine today. Not looking forward to dealing with the quick disconnects. I had enough of those when I installed a/c on the truck.
Those additives don't clean filters just all the gunk in your fuel system. I was dumb enough and forgot to replace my filter when i just put gumout I'm buying a new one today
+Paul Wilkinson diesel filters are the similar as Chris said but the fuel line needs to be bleed out depending on how quick and how much fuel you lost during the change. Some vehicles have come with such bleeders from factory but a bleeding kit should be cheep
+Paul Wilkinson - The filter in a diesel engine is even more important than a gas engine. Mainly because people neglect it, and there are more gelatinous bits of crud in diesel fuel than gas. They are generally recommended to be changed twice as often as a gas filter. More times than I can count, I've miraculously made a diesel-engined truck suddenly run like new because I replaces the filter. People tend to neglect it, and it gets all clogged up with crud. If you've never changed your filter on a diesel engine, go change it whether it needs it or not. Then write down the mileage on the filter itself with a permanent marker, and the date. And write it in the book. Then change it regularly, as recommended.
Chris I'm back yet again with another video suggestion! lol I was searching TH-cam for a how to on "tune ups" and could not find a good tutorial on it. Your videos are the most in depth and you seem to be one of the best, you should do a tutorial video on how to do a proper and thorough tune up. I'd like to see one that covers how to determine error codes n stuff and how to find out what they mean to each specific vehical.
+ChrisFix Not on my civic hatch no, to change a front blinker/turn signal you had to remove the wheel well trim, to change the front fog lights you had to drop the bumper. But the car looked like a UFO which was awesome.
I was working in a few auto repair shops in the 90's. Staring somewhere in the mid-80's, for most cars, they suddenly tended to develop severe engine problems for no apparent reason - and the fix for this, about 90% of the time, was to simply replace the fuel filter. Because people would neglect changing it, and that caused fuel-pressure problems for these "modern" engines that (most of the time) used throttle-body fuel injection. It was a surprising development for those of us who grew up in the age of carburetion. Those of us who learned these experiences passed this knowledge on to younger mechanics, and I think most people understand now that it's a vitally important thing to do. You cannot neglect your fuel filter, as you probably could have back in the 60's or 70's or 80's. NOW it's one of the things you must pay attention to, since most cars had moved up from about 7 psi fuel pressure (for a carburetor) to about 40 psi to run the TBI. Today, many of them run 60-70 PSI, and if the filter is blocking the fuel pump's efforts then your engine may behave very erratically. So this is an important point to make to your viewers. If your car's engine is behaving strangely, or just generally running badly, and you've never changed the fuel filter before - this is one of the FIRST things you should do before considering more expensive repair options. In fact it's something that people should do just to see if it improves the engine's performance, simply because it's so cheap and easy to do. If you haven't replaced your fuel filter before, and you've put more a few thousand miles on your car, you REALLY should change the fuel filter - just because you don't know when it was last changed. And if you replace this filter as soon as you notice that your car's engine isn't behaving well, there's a pretty good chance that this will suddenly cause your engine to behave much better than it was before...
Thanks for the great video, I have been trying to change the fuel filter for quite a while using the so called quick disconnect tools. To make long story short, your video gave me the insight and knowledge to finally accomplish the task.
I did this along with spark plugs and intake filter, oil change ect the first week I got my bugeye subie, the fuel filter style wasn't on this video. the in and out were on top of the filter. Nice video man as usual

+Rounak Gandhi I think most modern cars do. In some there is access hole below rear seat, then the job isn't too bad. In others you'd need to drop a tank :/
+Rounak Gandhi I've done a few it's not fun. Most times you can get to it under the rear seat but you'll need a special tool to get the securing ring securing the sender unit to the tank. Then you have to partly dismantle the sender unit to replace the filter and put it all back together.
depending on the type of Toyota/lexus vehicle. the fuel filter can not be changed because it's part of the fuel pump it's self unless you replace the whole fuel pump. the fuel filter is a life time filter and should not need To be replaced unless you are experiencing some problems like if your car won't start that would be the only reason on changing it I own a 2001 lexus is300 and like I said to replace the fuel filter you have to replace it with a new fuel pump so if its not causing any problems don't even worry about changing it
+Pie 4life Cutting one open can be dangerous as the paper part inside usually catches fire in the process of cutting the metal case open. (I've done it- that paper burns for a LONG TIME) They are typically paper folds like an air filter or the inside of a oil filter. Many modern cars have a paper oil filter or cartridge type. This is basically what the guts of a fuel filter look like.
+Pie 4life I am cutting them open dont you worry! My van has the original fuel filter with 300k miles on it!!! I will also do my Vette which is well maintained and has 30k miles on it, and the truck which has 130k miles.
+ChrisFix yeah I wonder how thick the metal casing is.. it could be pretty thin in older ones but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a regulation about how thin they can be, since in a crash they basically throw a fistful of gas on the impact if they are compromised.
+Bruce Boyles Easiest way is to cut a flap with angle grinder to access it without dropping fuel tank, then welding it back. Just make sure you are low on gas or without gas at all. No seriously, don't do that. You should never work with anything hot and sparking on any fuel tank that had some gas before. EVER. Even if it was empty for a long time.
Nice and easy, unless you own a Grand Vitara and the fuel filter is part of the pump assembly which sits inside of the tank and you have to remove your exhaust, rear driveshaft, drop tank, remove pump assembly, change filter and pump and put everything back together.

This is a well timed video. Just a few days ago, I started getting sluggish acceleration below 2500 rpm (almost feels like turbo lag, but I'm NA). I think it's bad gas because it happened after refilling at a 7-11 instead my usual chevron. But I'm at 52000 miles and hadn't even thought about the fuel filter. I'm going to have to do some work on the brakes soon, so I'll grab a filter, too. Thanks, man.
+ExaltedDuck ... and after looking it up, gen III hemi -> no inline filter. Just a screen on the pump pickup in the tank for gross particles. Apparently, between having a plastic tank and the gas station double wall tanks that started getting installed during the MTBE days, fuel tends to stay pretty neat, and particulates are small enough to pass through injectors. So they say...
Turns out the gut feeling was right. Bad gas. I don't *think* I accidentally filled up last week with 87, but that's kind of what it felt like. But after I topped off today with 10 gallons (a little over a half tank) of 91 from the gas station I usually go to, it was running like it should within a just a few minutes. (the variable valve and ignition timing de-rates it to run on 87, but the 89 and 91 run smoother, stronger, and bump up the mpg enough to pay for themselves.)
I just wanted to confirm... I just replaced the fuel filter on my BNR32 GTR 1992 Nissan Skyline, and the HOT RAG trick does work, surprisingly well. I first pulled the fuel pump fuse from under the steering column, then attempted to start the car. Once that was done and the fuel somewhat purged, I disconnected the battery, located the fuel pump, unscrewed the clamp and attempted to pull off the hose but it was on there TIGHT. I read that a hot rag would help get it off, but I didn't believe it. I actually grabbed a hair dryer as I was going to use it as a sudo-heat gun... however, I ran a cloth under some really hot water just to give it a shot, came out, applied the rag to those, held it there really tight all the way around for about 10 seconds, then twisted and pulled and it came off rather easily, with light to medium force and a slight twist it came right off. I'd say be prepared with an additional rag or two to soak up the little bit gas that spills out and don't let go of the hose or it will throw more. Repeat with the bottom hose the same way (hot rag trick) but place some extra rags underneath,, it comes off easier but also leaks quite a bit more. I placed a rag over the open hoses, the fumes are not fun, they give you a headache after a minute or two. I put the new filter in reverse order, checked for leaks, put the fuse back in, then primed the fuel pump 2-3 times and it started right up no problem. Then I did another check for leaks, took it on a test drive (to my surprise there was a noticeable difference in response and even sound). Looking forward to your Ford fuel filter change vid. I have a Mazda b3000 the only difference it is a single line out and in, but it does have the quick disconnect fitting which requires that tool you showed in this video. Nice work on the videos and thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise.

Brilliant work again mate! All the info needed for s weekend warrior to do their own maintenance. Some info tho: Nissan recommend every 40,000km unless in tank type; and Jeep/Chrysler/dodge are every 40,000km unless in tank. Also if doing this to a diesel 9 times in 10 you will have to hand prime the filter yourself as some don't have prime pumps (comes on with ign). Be careful with fuel filters too and make sure they are the correct filtration. Diesels with an injector pump with fuel lines to each injector usually takes about a 5 micron filter and a common rail will usually take about a 2 micron filter as they are more temperamental with dirty fuel. Some food for thought :)

Chris, I learned a handy trick for breaking loose rubber hoses. Spray some WD-40 on the end of the rubber hose where it meets the metal. Wait about 20 seconds, wipe off the excess, and with a firm grip, crack it loose. I've done this on radiator hoses, heater hoses, pretty much any rubber hose that has seized to a metal part with great results. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.
This helps because my chrysler shut off across town where i dont live at not knowing what was wrong with the car is because the filter was old..... Embarrassingly as it sounds i was all forward with spending how ever much i would to learn of fixing a car myself. Love learning lol

Its actually pretty fun to tinker with the cylinder head and see how everything works. i also ordered some rocker arms to replace worn ones. Should be some smooth idling and better performance after that! Still gotta change my distributor cap and arm when the cam and rockers are in place. Maybe you should make a video about replacing valve lifters or that kind of work on the cylinder head? :D

Also renewed the screws and nuts holding it on (thanks to my mate with a jar of PC spares) as the originals were so ancient. The tool we used wasn't perfect and we slightly damaged the end of the fuel hoses getting them off, but with the new retaining things on nice and tight it doesn't seem to have had any ill effects. I'm gonna invest in a hook tool for this purpose now! Thanks again!

Great video as usual =] My one suggestion is that next time you explain how to loosen the hoses with pliers (when necessary), please be sure to also emphasize caution when twisting and applying pressure - because sometimes you can break/crack the hose (as I'm sure you know). Thanks!

You don't need a special tool for the Ford style. Plenty of DIY vids on making it from a Sharpie pen cap.

ChrisFix , I would respectively like to suggest an alternative ,for those who may not have a dental pick,which has worked for me in a few occasions.I used a very wide flat screwwdriver at the same spot where you inserted your pick and pryed out the hose a few centimeters just enough to break the initial sticking and after that just used exactly your twist and pull technique.

On some cars the fuel filter is integral to the fuel tank. They generally last the life of the vehicle, assuming your area has clean fuel.

Those additives don't clean filters just all the gunk in your fuel system. I was dumb enough and forgot to replace my filter when i just put gumout I'm buying a new one today

Diesel is similar but the air needs to be bled out. I wish I had a diesel car to work on.
+Paul Wilkinson diesel filters are the similar as Chris said but the fuel line needs to be bleed out depending on how quick and how much fuel you lost during the change. Some vehicles have come with such bleeders from factory but a bleeding kit should be cheep
+ChrisFix my f250 has two fuel filters. one in the engine bay, and another inside the pump. you have to take the pump apart to get to that one.
+Paul Wilkinson - The filter in a diesel engine is even more important than a gas engine. Mainly because people neglect it, and there are more gelatinous bits of crud in diesel fuel than gas. They are generally recommended to be changed twice as often as a gas filter. More times than I can count, I've miraculously made a diesel-engined truck suddenly run like new because I replaces the filter. People tend to neglect it, and it gets all clogged up with crud. If you've never changed your filter on a diesel engine, go change it whether it needs it or not. Then write down the mileage on the filter itself with a permanent marker, and the date. And write it in the book. Then change it regularly, as recommended.
i change mine every 10k miles, or about every other oil change per the owners book recommends.

Your videos are the most in depth and you seem to be one of the best, you should do a tutorial video on how to do a proper and thorough tune up. I'd like to see one that covers how to determine error codes n stuff and how to find out what they mean to each specific vehical.

I was working in a few auto repair shops in the 90's. Staring somewhere in the mid-80's, for most cars, they suddenly tended to develop severe engine problems for no apparent reason - and the fix for this, about 90% of the time, was to simply replace the fuel filter. Because people would neglect changing it, and that caused fuel-pressure problems for these "modern" engines that (most of the time) used throttle-body fuel injection.
It was a surprising development for those of us who grew up in the age of carburetion. Those of us who learned these experiences passed this knowledge on to younger mechanics, and I think most people understand now that it's a vitally important thing to do. You cannot neglect your fuel filter, as you probably could have back in the 60's or 70's or 80's. NOW it's one of the things you must pay attention to, since most cars had moved up from about 7 psi fuel pressure (for a carburetor) to about 40 psi to run the TBI. Today, many of them run 60-70 PSI, and if the filter is blocking the fuel pump's efforts then your engine may behave very erratically.
So this is an important point to make to your viewers. If your car's engine is behaving strangely, or just generally running badly, and you've never changed the fuel filter before - this is one of the FIRST things you should do before considering more expensive repair options. In fact it's something that people should do just to see if it improves the engine's performance, simply because it's so cheap and easy to do.
If you haven't replaced your fuel filter before, and you've put more a few thousand miles on your car, you REALLY should change the fuel filter - just because you don't know when it was last changed. And if you replace this filter as soon as you notice that your car's engine isn't behaving well, there's a pretty good chance that this will suddenly cause your engine to behave much better than it was before...

+Rounak Gandhi I've done a few it's not fun. Most times you can get to it under the rear seat but you'll need a special tool to get the securing ring securing the sender unit to the tank. Then you have to partly dismantle the sender unit to replace the filter and put it all back together.
depending on the type of Toyota/lexus vehicle. the fuel filter can not be changed because it's part of the fuel pump it's self unless you replace the whole fuel pump. the fuel filter is a life time filter and should not need To be replaced unless you are experiencing some problems like if your car won't start that would be the only reason on changing it I own a 2001 lexus is300 and like I said to replace the fuel filter you have to replace it with a new fuel pump so if its not causing any problems don't even worry about changing it

+Pie 4life Cutting one open can be dangerous as the paper part inside usually catches fire in the process of cutting the metal case open. (I've done it- that paper burns for a LONG TIME) They are typically paper folds like an air filter or the inside of a oil filter. Many modern cars have a paper oil filter or cartridge type. This is basically what the guts of a fuel filter look like.

+ChrisFix yeah I wonder how thick the metal casing is.. it could be pretty thin in older ones but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a regulation about how thin they can be, since in a crash they basically throw a fistful of gas on the impact if they are compromised.

+Bruce Boyles Easiest way is to cut a flap with angle grinder to access it without dropping fuel tank, then welding it back. Just make sure you are low on gas or without gas at all.
No seriously, don't do that. You should never work with anything hot and sparking on any fuel tank that had some gas before. EVER. Even if it was empty for a long time.

Nice and easy, unless you own a Grand Vitara and the fuel filter is part of the pump assembly which sits inside of the tank and you have to remove your exhaust, rear driveshaft, drop tank, remove pump assembly, change filter and pump and put everything back together.

This is a well timed video. Just a few days ago, I started getting sluggish acceleration below 2500 rpm (almost feels like turbo lag, but I'm NA). I think it's bad gas because it happened after refilling at a 7-11 instead my usual chevron. But I'm at 52000 miles and hadn't even thought about the fuel filter. I'm going to have to do some work on the brakes soon, so I'll grab a filter, too. Thanks, man.
+ExaltedDuck ... and after looking it up, gen III hemi -> no inline filter. Just a screen on the pump pickup in the tank for gross particles. Apparently, between having a plastic tank and the gas station double wall tanks that started getting installed during the MTBE days, fuel tends to stay pretty neat, and particulates are small enough to pass through injectors. So they say...

Turns out the gut feeling was right. Bad gas. I don't *think* I accidentally filled up last week with 87, but that's kind of what it felt like. But after I topped off today with 10 gallons (a little over a half tank) of 91 from the gas station I usually go to, it was running like it should within a just a few minutes. (the variable valve and ignition timing de-rates it to run on 87, but the 89 and 91 run smoother, stronger, and bump up the mpg enough to pay for themselves.)

I just wanted to confirm... I just replaced the fuel filter on my BNR32 GTR 1992 Nissan Skyline, and the HOT RAG trick does work, surprisingly well. I first pulled the fuel pump fuse from under the steering column, then attempted to start the car. Once that was done and the fuel somewhat purged, I disconnected the battery, located the fuel pump, unscrewed the clamp and attempted to pull off the hose but it was on there TIGHT. I read that a hot rag would help get it off, but I didn't believe it. I actually grabbed a hair dryer as I was going to use it as a sudo-heat gun... however, I ran a cloth under some really hot water just to give it a shot, came out, applied the rag to those, held it there really tight all the way around for about 10 seconds, then twisted and pulled and it came off rather easily, with light to medium force and a slight twist it came right off. I'd say be prepared with an additional rag or two to soak up the little bit gas that spills out and don't let go of the hose or it will throw more. Repeat with the bottom hose the same way (hot rag trick) but place some extra rags underneath,, it comes off easier but also leaks quite a bit more. I placed a rag over the open hoses, the fumes are not fun, they give you a headache after a minute or two. I put the new filter in reverse order, checked for leaks, put the fuse back in, then primed the fuel pump 2-3 times and it started right up no problem. Then I did another check for leaks, took it on a test drive (to my surprise there was a noticeable difference in response and even sound). I hate the filters that are in the fuel pump like in my jeep. Fun to watch this video and wish I had an easy filter to change.
I'd recommend using needle nose pliers with rubber tubing over them to grab the lines. Old fuel lines can tear with the metal on rubber contact.
Brilliant work again mate! All the info needed for s weekend warrior to do their own maintenance. Some info tho:
Nissan recommend every 40,000km unless in tank type; and
Jeep/Chrysler/dodge are every 40,000km unless in tank.
Also if doing this to a diesel 9 times in 10 you will have to hand prime the filter yourself as some don't have prime pumps (comes on with ign). Be careful with fuel filters too and make sure they are the correct filtration. Diesels with an injector pump with fuel lines to each injector usually takes about a 5 micron filter and a common rail will usually take about a 2 micron filter as they are more temperamental with dirty fuel.

Chris, I learned a handy trick for breaking loose rubber hoses. Spray some WD-40 on the end of the rubber hose where it meets the metal. Wait about 20 seconds, wipe off the excess, and with a firm grip, crack it loose. I've done this on radiator hoses, heater hoses, pretty much any rubber hose that has seized to a metal part with great results. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

Its actually pretty fun to tinker with the cylinder head and see how everything works. i also ordered some rocker arms to replace worn ones. Should be some smooth idling and better performance after that! Still gotta change my distributor cap and arm when the cam and rockers are in place. Maybe you should make a video about replacing valve lifters or that kind of work on the cylinder head? :D
