I just wanna say how thankful I am to have a channel like yours to help me do my own maintenance. I was quoted 450$ for a motor mount swap, bought the part for 38$ and had it done in less than an hour by myself because of your video.

Just did this today on my 2011 Ranger. I even bought the same fancy disconnect tool. Turned out I didn't need it. Everything is just a push type disconnect.
    Keep up the video's.

Taylor F. Yea, Chris makes good vids but Kilmer's tips have saved me thousands of dollars while chris's has saved me hundreds. But keep in mind Kilmer has been doing it for 40 years and the guy never seems bummed out. Any how, both channels are awesome. They should both team up every once and a while. Chris can hold the camera and do the video editing while Kilmer fixes everything...lol Ohhh, or better yet do a mechanics jeopardy challenge.

Great video. From replacing the fuel pump yesterday on mine I found a new way to get off those lines. Those two small lines you used the tool on can be removed by just pushing in on the hose (toward the filter), then while doing that push in on the orange clips with your finger, then just pull the hose off. No tool needed! Seen several of your videos, always quality stuff.

you made that look way to easy. Every time I work on my truck there is always some thing that does not want to cooperate. I changed out the coolant housing. It has two coolant sensors. Pull the clip out, pull out the old sensors, drop in the new and put the clip back in. Sounds simple, First off they sold me the wrong sensors. I tried to put the old one's back in. The two little clips Refused to go back in. After four hours of praying to swearing I said to the hell with it and used paper clips. So far it is working with no leaks. Had I gone to the Ford dealership and got the OEM parts I may have gotten the right parts and not have had to go through this torture.

Great video. I changed the fuel filter on my 99 Ranger yesterday. The only problem I had was that the auto parts store gave me the wrong filter. When I thought I had it installed correctly and tried to start the truck, I had gas pouring out all over my driveway. Several attempts later I notice that the filter line was slightly smaller that the old one that I had removed. Once I got the correct filter it literally took less than a minute to install. thanks for the video. Keep making these videos.

For days now, I have been searching for the correct way to remove these clips, all I've come across are people breaking the clips, then paying a ton of money to have a mechanic replace the fuel line, or some hillbilly rigging to keep the fuel filter in place. Nice video as usual, Chris! One tip I have found that seems to help with stubborn fittings of this style is to give them a good shot of Kroil or WD-40 before removal. I try to kind of blast out any dirt or grime in the fitting and they seem to come off a little easier...especially the one with the plastic clip. Thanks again!

I replaced my fuel filter last month. I did it according to what the manual said...sort of. Take off gas cap. Park on hill with engine pointing uphill. I drive with the tank mostly full all the time since I have lots of kids. Negative wire off the battery. I had bought the cheap plastic disconnector tool set. If you live in a place where they salt heavily those don't work. The filter was rusted in and, the plastic broke. For some reason there is a clip near the fuel lines. I clipped them up to keep from getting gas everywhere. There's a hole in the wheel well I use for the same reason to hang the brake line when changing calipers. (Don't ask. Just picture a couple of my sons taking the car one night while I was sleeping after seeing Fast and Furious. I almost killed them the next morning. ) I borrowed a scissor disconnector from a friend. Filter was off in three seconds. If you live some place they salt heavily make sure to check for other stuff while you're down there. I found some things that needed repair from rust while I was working. I don't go under too often since the neighborhood idiots always stop by with moronic comments about women or like to skid by to blow road dust in my face while I have my shoes poking out from underneath.

It's worth noting that an alternative method for killing the fuel pressure on certain Ford vehicles is to locate and disconnect the inertia switch. It's usually hidden up near the firewall just barely behind the dashboard in the passenger side of the cab. It's easy to find since it's the only thing back there with a big red button on it. As an added bonus, you get to push a big red button to reset it once the job is done. I find this to be strangely satisfying.
Also, I encountered this on my '03 Ranger, and it seems other Ford trucks (especially from around that time) have different size fuel filters available. This confused me since the one I bought was significantly smaller than the original one. Ford references these as the "old style" and "new style" fuel filters, but I have yet to discover the details of the difference, aside from the obvious of the diameter reduction. But as far as I can tell, they're totally interchangeable. The smaller ones at least tend to come with a smaller clamp to fit them, and that's just a small bolt holding it to the frame rail. Easy stuff. But that did throw me off at first.

Some advice i would give is to remove the clamp/clip that holds the brake lines and fuels lines so u can pull the fuel filter all the way down for easier access to the filter clips

Did this on my Ranger but all you need to do is push the red and green tabs inwards on the fuel line and pull outward. The tool does look easier though!

Good video....but the tubes on the INLET-side are QUICK DISCONNECT. Thus, you do not need a BANJO tool for that (as shown). Just press firmly on the colored 'stripe' and it will pop-off. I used a flat-tip screwdriver to press with on mine.
Now, on my 2003 Explorer SPORT (the 2-dr Explorer), a Banjo tool was indeed required required on the output. Mine looked different than yours. Well done on the video.

Fuel Filters, such a little inexpensive thing - and so much trouble if they get clogged! In the last 33 years, I was only stuck twice! Once, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike with the car going slower and slower, the more gas I gave it, the more it wanted to stall. That was a costly repair, including towing. Figured it would never happen again, but it did, on a used car, on the way home from the lot. I managed to get to an auto parts store, had to change it in the parking lot! Now, I change them on every used vehicle I buy, and then about every other year regardless of symptoms.

You can push in the orange piece by hand to make it disconnect also.
Too bad the parts today are crap. The lines are a bear to get on/off my new filter (old filter was easy). I had to verify that the pump was working by taking off a line and, now, it won't lock back on because it is too hard to push in place.

I was unaware there was a tool for these lines. Was replacing my fuel filter on my 07 Focus a few months ago, ended up breaking one of the clips (the ones they include with the filter don't fit and you have to shave them down). If you ever need to replace one of the clips with a new one, go to the store and look inside the boxes of the fuel filters, I cannot remember the company that makes it, but one of them has the line clips and they're a perfect fit. You can order them online, or just spend an extra $10 to get 2 clips instead of having to wait on shipping or have to replace the whole line.

....and new fuel filter in. Spent 6 bucks on the tool to take the metal side off coming from the pump, but something was clearly broken inside it, as it never came off. Ended up replacing the hose and using a hose clamp. The engine side came off fine, however. Go figure.

You do not have to pull the pin out on the disconnects and while I often forget this you don't need a disconnect tool at all. The truth is you just have to press your thumb or something hard against the little "button" then move the hose toward the filter and then away from it and it will disconnect. I bought the disconnect tools for a ridiculous $20 just so I would have them, and was able to use them for 1 of the 3 connections on my Jetta fuel filter. It wouldn't fit in either of the other two because they were too close to the filter. So after trying really hard to pull the pin out as you showed, I gave up and tried pushing against it since it looks like a button and after it came loose I remembered the two other times that I had figured this out on my wife's Ranger.
I see that briteidea08 said something similar and maybe they aren't all like this but from the 2002 Ranger to my 2014 Jetta they both are simply push on the button and then push toward the filter and then pull it loose.
I will also mention that on the Jetta they fail to put any fuse diagram in the manual so I couldn't pull the fuse for the fuel pump and while a little gas did come out, I can't say it was really much, if any, worse than it would have been if I could have pulled the fuse while it was running.

    Chris,
it's me again with yet another question. I've been told I have a possible fuel system issue and here's what's been going on. My ranger starts up with no delay in the morning but if I go somewhere and come back to turn the truck back on (while its still warm) it seems to lag alot, sometimes cranking for 5 seconds before turning over. I've been told it may be a fuel pump issue but I wanted to see if you might have any input. Maybe the fuel filter is getting clogged? I just got the truck a month ago (128k) and not sure what's been replaced. I appreciate your videos and they've been my number 1 source of information for my newly found desire to learn about my truck. Thanks!

      @chrisfix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Glad to see this Ford filter change. But...sometimes it's not so easy.
My Excursion sees a lot of dirt roads. Dirt packs into these fittings and makes them a bear to get off. I've taken to hitting them with the pressure washer before trying to get them off. And as mentioned below, a soaking of WD40 helps as well.
Ford...not always a better idea. Gimme band clamps on a filter under the hood!

I wish I would've known that trick before I did mine. I bought the tool took one end of the filter of but there wasn't enough space to get around and underneath the line so I had to grin the lips of the tool to about half the size. worked but took an extra 30 minutes to get the right size. my fuel line didn't have the clip either. 1992 ford explorer
