Crate Training Your Puppy DOESN'T Have To Be Stressful!

  • Crate training a puppy can be challenging. In this video we will give you 5 ways to help your dog love being inside their crate. A crate is a great place for your dog to be safe and comfortable when you can't be supervising them. It's a great way to make sure your puppy or dog is getting good information. And it's also a good way to make sure they aren't getting themselves into a dangerous situation. It also gives them somewhere to go in a busy household that they can relax. With kids, other dogs or other busy environments, sometimes your dog just needs a place to relax. A crate is a great place to do that. Teaching your dog to love being in their crate is also a really helpful way to potty train your puppy. It can help you stop them from peeing in the house, simply by allowing you to monitor what your puppy is doing all of the time. It's really important that the time your puppy spends outside of their crate is quality time, spent with you!

This method saved my life. I got a chocolate lab puppy 5 days ago. Every time I put her in the crate, she whined and barked non stop. Today, i took a chance when she was tired, and played this small game with her in the crate. She started to sit down IN THE CRATE and wait for a treat. I just put her to bed and she hasn’t made a sound. Thankyou so much!

We got lucky with our current pup. We bought the crate, set it in the room, and a few minutes later, the little guy just walked right in and went to sleep without any prompting. In the first two weeks, we never closed the door and the puppy was allowed to choose the crate or other area in the room to sleep (it was about 50/50). We always gave him a treat and praised him when he went into the crate on his own. Now, he uses the crate to sleep at night, we don't even close the door. We also use it for puppy time-outs when he gets too rowdy and uncontrollable (with the door closed, of course). We never put him in there in an angry manner but in a very positive and praising way (along with a treat). He knows it is a place to chill and relax, so he does so...and is let out after about 10 minutes (or when he wakes up) and is in a very well-behaved and good mood.

Hubby and I have had dogs for more than 40 years and never had a crate. We were told by several people this time that we need a crate, so we got one. We had it in the living room and puppy had no hesitation to play in the crate right away. We moved it upstairs to our bedroom and she loves it in there, but we have not shut the door on it yet. The only reason we want to crate train is for if we need to be gone from the home and she can feel safe. Thanks for the great video!

I have a big- medium sized dog(her name is Coco) and she doesn't have a problem with having accidents in her crate(she hasn't had an accident in the house because we always take her outside when we know she needs to go) and we've only had her for a week, she does have a crate twice her size which is way too big for her and I need to get her a smaller one because she is full grown already. She does have a problem with barking in her crate at night, but I've been training her to not do that and shes doing really well(I'm using one of your other videos for crate training). Thank you so much guys!!💕

❤my dog is almost like a cat. She love a basket with a cat bed and that makes he very secure and happy. Not interested in toys or playing either. The sheet trick helps. She is scent trained so she loves the large Carry purse and she can alert from there if the need arises. She has just started running thru the house happily waging her tail. Not quite 6 mo yet but has the scent training down. Still teaching a few new commands if they are needed but behaves very well in public and rather well at home almost all the time too. Nice videos

One of the best things I learned about crate training when my Cavalier was a little puppy was that if you can't have your eyes on your puppy, or they haven't just gone to the bathroom, they belong in the crate. Finnegan used to go out and potty, then we would play. After a while, I'd put him back in the crate which was right next to my desk. Since I couldn't watch him right then, I put him in the crate and he was as happy as a clam.

My dogs love their crate and will go in it sometimes on their own like when they are tired or not feeling well. They stay in their crate while I am gone out of the house. I think they are so used to it that they might be stressed if I was gone and they had the entire house to roam. Not to mention I would worry a bit about them making a mess if I were gone a long time since they are small dogs.

Hi, my puppy is 12 weeks old and he’s been in a crate since we’ve had him and doing really well over night but we’ve had some issues with biting over the past 2 weeks and after watching your videos I realised we weren’t training enough and allowing far too much freedom during the day! We’ve now started keeping him in his crate during the day a lot more so we can actually work but of course he is getting agitated to start with and barks..(seems to settle after about 10 minutes) just hoping you can give some advice on whether to just continue doing this or if there is a point where we should be giving in & letting him out? We are letting him out every hour or so to go outside to toileting / training / playing for 10 minutes at least if not more. Thanks so much finding your videos super helpful!

i have a 20.5 year old terrier - Baxter. As a puppy he was crate trained and it was effortless. We retired 2 years after rescuing him and he no longer needed the crate. We would only use it at night when we visited friends. He was able to stay in the house for 13 hours with no issues at all! He started going deaf and blind several years and has so many health issues, we didn't expect him to live this long and didn't prepare very well. He has been having "mistakes" so we have been letting him out more often. However, we aren't confident he can make it thru more than 3 hours if we're away. He sleeps in the back of our bedroom closet with old clothes on the floor. Last week I stopped making that available to him during the day; with him upstairs, I can be more alert to his needs and start to crate train him. He does sleep most of the day, so we are alert to when he stirs so we can get him outside and then get in some crate training. Now that he makes so many "mistakes" we don't feel we can take him to visit family. we would like to be able to be gone 6 hours. The crate we use to use is too small for him to turn around in because of his arthritis and we bought a crate more suitable to his size. I've found some touch cues on-line to try to retrain "come" and "down". A touch cue for "stay" or "wait" would be helpful. I 've watched (and taken notes) on your videos for crate training. My concern right now is his barking in the crate when the treats or 1:1 time in it is over. He can't hear voice cues or sharp hand claps. if you have any suggestions I'd appreciate it. I can't wait to initiate more of your tips.

I'm glad I watched this video. We're getting an 8 week old Great Pyrenees/Spanish Mastiff cross on Saturday and so I went out and bought a giant crate for him to grow into. Thanks to this video, I now know I need to look into a way to make the crate smaller while he's still a pup.
We're hoping that we can teach the pup that crate time = quiet time, as Pyrs have a reputation as barkers, especially at night.

I got a new 4-month Lhasa and we live in an apartment (4 people sharing) and no access to the lawn or the rooftop. We have a wire crate that has a catch bin underneath and my husband and I want to train our puppy to use the crate as his potty area since he is on the loose all the time inside our room whenever we come home from work. Do you think it's a good idea? If yes, can you suggest how we can train him? Thanks in advance.

This is excellent, thank you so much for thanking time to share this valuable info with us.
Q: is it important crucial to have a crate in the car? I’m most of the time alone with the dog (no husband or kids with me) so if I need to do errands, would this be an alternative for me and my dog to leave him in the car in his crate for short time?

I'm doing research in preparation of bringing home two Havanese puppies. I've seen videos and websites about setting up a pen inside the house (that include a crate and toys). I'm seeing that pens can provide them with their own special area to play and sleep if the humans need to be outside the room or even at work. What are your thoughts about using pens for puppies (I'd gladly watch a video too)?

Do you guys recommend using a puppy play pen along with/attached to the crate, or do you suggest just using the crate? Is it something that comes later, or should we just stick with the crate? Thanks so much, love your videos!

So glad your puppy is so comfortable in their kennel, Erica! It’s so nice for a puppy to have a safe comfortable place to be when you can’t be supervising them. Thanks for watching ~Ken

Question....when I have to go back to work. Can I put the kennel in a play yard in the house to give her more room?
      She is 9 weeks

Love all of your videos--my partner and I are first time dog owners and they've made all the difference so far! I was watching the "Puppy Training Schedule Week By Week" Train Station replay, and y'all mentioned that you put the puppy crate on your nightstand in your bedroom--how long do you do that for? We've had our 8 week old Australian Shepherd for three nights now and that tip has really helped keep him settled in the crate at night, but we're wondering when we should relocate it to somewhere else in our room for sleeping time.
Thanks! Keep up the amazing work and hello from Portland, OR!

Hi there, Kristen! Thanks for joining us from Portland! Once your pup is a little more settled overnight, you can move them into a location that's a little farther away. 3 nights may be enough, but make sure that you're able to communicate with your puppy for a little while longer. Another spot in your room will allow you to hear the puppy if he starts to fuss during the night. This may be a sign that he needs to go out, or that he needs to be told to settle. That's something you'll start to learn. Keeping it on the floor within arms-reach could be a good spot as the next stage so you're able to tap the crate if he really gets fussy. We have a video that talks about overnight barking in the crate overnight that you'll find helpful. Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/jQTpS4SAWI0/w-d-xo.html
      Thanks for watching! ~Ken

Great videos. Thanks. I am getting a new puppy soon and need to fly with him after a couple of days and he'll need to be put under the seat in front of us :(( Never did this before so I'm a bit nervous. If he barks and is scared, what's the best thing to do. Flight is 3 hrs. :((( and he'll be 9 weeks old.

With this and all of your training tips, how much time do you train your dog/puppy per session? Till they tire and lose interest or are there other indicators that I should look for to know they have had enough for that session?

Hello Kayl, I am an avid fan of you and Ken's work. I can see that this vlog was done some time ago. I wondering I am to collect an 8-week old puppy miniature schnauzer. My question is: Is it a good idea or / not to place puppy/potty/pads at the front of the crate during the night for those unwanted accidents???

Thank you for the tips. Nice video. I have two dogs and I am hoping you might have some advice. One is a French Bulldog boy who will be 4-years-old in a a couple of months. I adopted him when he was 2 and a half and had him neutered a few months later. He was crate trained, and I used it for a while, then at our second apartment he did well if I kept my bedroom and bathroom closed off, but now at out new home he started marking more. I did get a dog and kitten (and have two other cats) since we moved in, but do you feel I should go back to more strict crate use? I have his crate out and use it at night, and I have also gotten him washable doggie diapers. Is this helping to teach him to pee outside and not mark in the house, or am I going about it the wrong way? I also have a sweet Lab mix who has been through trauma. She turned 2-years-old a few months ago and can chew on the rug at times. I got her a crate, but she is very scared of it. I can be patient if it will help her, but I also don't want to cause her more trauma. It took a couple of days but she now will eat in the crate, but won't really go in for treats. I'm trying to make it a positive space but she was scared of it even in the store. When I use treats she comes closer to the crate than when I first introduced it but she won't go in yet. I just wonder if she really needs it and don't want to scare her. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks again!

We plan to crate train our puppy who we will welcome into our home on Wednesday! She will be 8 weeks on Thursday. I'm having trouble with the concept of having nothing in the crate with them. Obviously for feeding purposes that is fine. But what is the suggestion at night? I had planned on placing a sherpa crate mat (waterproof) overnight along with her Snuggle Puppy. Is this not advised? Also, I was not going to put the crate in my bedroom and keep it where it will be on the main floor. Although I did reconsider (from watching a video) and may put it in the bedroom for 2 nights. What is the best suggestion? Especially for someone who does not want their dog in their bed...for the first couple of years at least! Haha! Thank you for any advice you can provide. I'm loving these videos and finding them ever so helpful!

A crate should be a safe, relaxing place for your dog to be able to rest. It's also a great way to make sure your dog is safe when they can't be supervised! Does your dog love their crate as much a Bee-Line the border collie puppy?

Unfortunately not! Our 12 week old Labrador Retriever puppy is great in the crate overnight but just won't stay in there during the day without whining. We have followed the tips in your video from the start (meals in there, treat games etc) and she goes in no problem but she will never go in there of her own accord to play with her toys or relax. And if we put her in there and close the door she will immediately start whining! It's making it very difficult for us to do simple things like leave to go to the bathroom or cook a meal. Do you have any tips? Thanks for the great videos! They have been a great source of info for us!

Hi there, Brian! We talk about that problem specifically in one of our live-streams that we did in crate training. We worked through that issue specifically. We also addressed how to let your pup know that they’re not allowed to make a fuss in their crate in a video we posted a couple of weeks ago. I’ll post the links in the next 2 comments (because I’m on mobile and can’t copy multiple URL’s. Feel free to reach out if you continue to struggle with your training! ~Ken

You talked about having 2 crates. One in the bedroom for the puppy's first few nights (or weeks) and one (in our case) in the kitchen downstairs. How do we make the transition? Our pup is coming home next week and we hope to eventually be able to keep him in the kitchen which will be gated and in the crate for nights and when we have to leave him alone during the day.

This is so helpful, thank you! Our puppy does fine in his crate during the day if we are leaving to run errands, but when we go to bed, he howls. We are working on making the crate a "positive atmosphere," but in the meantime, while we get him more and more used to the crate, should he still be sleeping in the crate, or somewhere else? Also, right now his crate is in the family room, but if we move it to our bedroom, is it okay to move it eventually into the family room again?

Crate training has been immensely helpful for our cattle dog mix. We adopted her at 7 months and she’s almost 2 now. She loves her crate and we often find her napping in there.
I do have a question though.
We just adopted a 3 month lab mix and we’re hoping to do the same things we did with our first girl. We’re 4 days in and because we have another dog to introduce her to we’ve kept her separated by having her crate in our guest room. At what point should we move her crate to a more central part of the home? Thanks!
