  • Crate training a puppy can be as easy as you make it or very difficult. Getting your puppy used to the crate and making it a pleasurable experience is the best way to do it. In this video I work with a very young puppy in one of the most difficult environments - an animal shelter and show how simple it can be to crate train a puppy the right way.
    This video shows the steps to get your dog to LOVE his crate and get him to go in there. Everything is covered in this video.

    I wish I would have done this day 1! Its been a pain to get my puppy in the crate. I tried out this video using a cut up hot dog. Did each step exactly like Robert described. I also keep his water and food bowl in the crate, and I hid treats throughout the day for him to find in his crate(I'll probably continue to do this for awhile). All I can say is wow.
    Today, the very next day, my puppy is already taking naps in his crate! I'm not sure I will even need to do any follow up training sessions with him. 15 minutes out of my day, and he's already loving his crate.

    OMGOSH!! thank you so sosososossoSO MUCH for not editing out the little puppy behaviors!! I am so tired of never seeing in the videos, how my puppy does things when I am "training"! All i see are these seemingly amazing pups who get it the first time and never act like a doofus, squirrel chaser! It is maddening and sometimes I feel like a failure. It is such a relief to see a "real" training session, Thank You so much.

    Hi Robert! First off, my boyfriend and I really appreciate all the information and content that you provide for new and veteran dog owners! We recently picked up a 4 mo Tervuren gal, and it seems that she is more toy driven than treat motivated. It is making crate training relatively tricky, but we know that there has to be some kind treat that she will go in the crate for (fingers crossed)!
    She sleeps in her crate at night and does make some whimpers at first, but then can calm herself. We don't want to keep having to push her toosh in at the last second (want her to go in all the way willingly), so what would you recommend for puppies that are not as treat motivated but don't "hate" their crate?
    **I should note that she will go in for her toy if we throw it in, but then will leave and play with it outside of her crate.

    Hi Robert :) I recently adopted a puppy and your videos have been very helpful. My question is about the pup you're training in this video; do you know what breed they are? Our little guy, Reuben, was rescued from Mississippi and brought to us in Maine but we don't know what breed he is (it just says "mixed" on the papers). Reuben looks just like the pup in the video but a little skinnier. I look forward to your response and learning more from your videos.

    Hello! I have a 4 month puppy and we are crate training. I do work from home and have my office in another room. The pup follows me and at times place her in crate. The crate is in our bedroom which we place our pup at night. She’s slowly lessening the whine.
    Do you recommend to place a cover the crate or leave it uncovered and continue to practice the crate for roof treats? We currently have the crate covered.

  • @MansterBear
    @MansterBear 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So you said not to let the treats be associated with you, but with the crate.
    But when teaching recall, you want the treats associated with you so they want to come to you, right?
    Can you teach both of these in different sessions but in the same day? Or do you have to spend days on crate training only before progressing to outside the crate stuff?

    Can you talk about crate training an older rescue that sees the crate as a trap? I've worked with my 5 yr old toy rescue so much and she's fine with it now except for going in on her own. She even stays in with the door open just as you show. I need to be holding her and she'll go in if I put her right in front of it. She seems to have only had "bad dog!" training and was probably thrown in the crate for punishment. Maybe she just needs more time, because she does love the crate now once she's in it. Her food and water are in it, and if she is hungry she pokes her head in the crate and looks back at me, but she won't go in and turn around for food or treats. With your help I've brought her so far in the least couple of months, thank you!

    • @k9psychology87
      @k9psychology87 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the things you can do is feed your dog in the crate but don’t latch the door so if your feeding your dog from the bowl put his or food bowl in there . You can also maybe give them a nice frozen marrow bone in there to eat something which will take some time to eat. You could close the door over but don’t latch if you do this over and over. Maybe use the crate as a safe place to again put their bed in there. Again but don’t latch just close the door over. You can then work on latching the door later when you give them the bone. You can also fill a kong with their food rather than the bowl maybe if they are on wet or raw you could even freeze it over night. It will take them even longer to eat it’s about letting them know it’s where all the good stuff happens. “NEVER USE THE CRATE AS PUNISHMENT”

    Can I train my puppy to like the crate again? We just got a two-month-old labradoodle pup and we've had him almost two weeks. We didn't know any better, so we shoved him in the crate. He barks and whines when we shut the door on it and leave the room.We've never taken him out while he's barking, but still hate to put him in there and have him barking like that.

  • @COn1984

    I’m really struggling with this. My wife and I recently received a miniature dachshund puppy. I am starting week 2 with the little guy. For the first week I played with him around the crate, gave him treats while inside the crate, and fed him his meals inside the crate. Now starting week two I am trying to keep the crate closed for 30min intervals and he is not having it. I have just started doing this for the past two days. I make sure he has gone to the bathroom, has toys, and has a treat inside the crate, but the entire time in the crate he whines and barks continuously. At night (thankfully) he has been sleeping most of the night in his crate, with the exception of a few potty breaks.
    My two questions are:
    1. Am I rushing this too fast and should slow down as maybe he still doesn’t have 100% positive association with the crate yet?
    2. Will I be able to correct this, or did I cause too much distress that he can not be crate trained now?

    I did exactly as this video but this didn't work with my 3 month old husky. As soon as the door is closed she goes absolutely berserk. Barking, howling, clawing at the crate. The crate is full of treats but as soon as that door is closed she goes hysterical. So I tried going back a step and leaving the door open for a few days while still rewarding with treats. Tried the door closed again and once again she went hysterical. I've lost all hope of her getting this.

    • @maverickwyattlee3416

      ScuuBdoo Don’t give up. Start fresh. Once you close the door have a treat coming in. Keep giving the treats. Walk away. If the dog barks. Ignore it. Don’t talk to them or anything. Ignore them. Wait until they tire out. They will. Give it a good minute of silence. Let them out. Never let it out while it’s barking or anything negative. When you let the dog out. Ignore him

      PLEASE DO NOT BREED THESE TWO DOGS! Breeding of dogs should only, I repeat, ONLY be done by experienced and responsible breeders who have performed extensive genetic / health testing and thoughfully and thoroughly reviewed pedigrees for health, temperament and proven working ability. Please, PLEASE be a responsible dog owner and have both of these dogs spayed and neutered. Backyard breeding is just not cool.

    What do you do if the dog has been babysat by a crate ... the puppy we have is now 6 months old, his last family just put him in a crate and left him or just left him in their backyard -- he was a surprise present from a teen's dad (who doesn't live in the home) and no one really wanted the dog -- Golden Retriever. I didn't want to shove him in and repeat their errors. How long before I close the door and how long should I leave him and overall how long should it take to train him to stay in the crate for a couple of hours?

      Go slow
      Be fair
      Be consistent

      @@RobertCabralDogs Thank you for that answer. It seems so simple but it is easy to forget in the midst of a puppy antics. I wrote that on a piece of paper stuck it on my fridge to remind myself. (Meant to say that we have only had the dog for two weeks).

    Where do you recommend the puppy sleeps for the first night home?

      It must sleep in the crate and just let it cry , ear plugs work well

    • @cordulam
      @cordulam 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MIKEC2000 No, that is cruel! It's a baby which just lost his mother, siblings, place to live, people it knew and just went through a very stressfull journey to your house. Let it sleep besides your bed. Or, like I do, sleep on the sofa to be near them. After a while, when his new "world" has become his home you can start letting him sleep alone.
