Another interesting way to have the dog associate the crate with their home is that my wife and I put the dog in the crate close to us while we’re having dinner so the dog realizes that when she’s in the crate it isn’t because we’re leaving. We always give the dog a treat going into the crate, but when we take the dog out, we just open the door and walk away so we encourage the dog to go in but we don’t encourage the dog to come out with treats. She Hass to come up by her own will.

Every time I watch one of these videos the puppy seems almost completely trained already and super comfortable with a kennel. While mine is whining constantly and biting at the kennel.

Hey! I love your videos and your dog and I thank you for all the time that you take to teach us. I have a question and don't know who else to ask.
1 am buying a 4 month old Akita from a reputable breeder. The puppy has been socialized a bunch with people, dogs and environments. I also met the puppy and seemed to have an amazing temperament. I'm just a bit concerned about his age. You mentioned that the most important window for a puppy closes at 4 months (the exact age that I am getting mine). Do you think this will be a problem and is he going to have an easy time transitioning to a new home? Will our bonding be affected? Is he too old? Thanks for your help!

What's the best way to size a crate so it's not too big or too small?

What size crate is suitable for a puppy that is coming home at 8 weeks? The adult weight will be 25 lbs

  • @annaperley45

will you please talk about how to teach puppy to stay home alone (in the crate or out)? there's so many controversial information, some say that to avoid separation anxiety in the future you should just leave it even if it's crying, others say that leaving them to cry it out will actually lead to separation anxiety. we are so confused and afraid to do the wrong thing, feels like we are chained to our puppy for the last two months

@@Meiathena we just brought home our puppy and he’s great at night - his crate is next to our bed and he doesn’t whine or bark. But trying to get him comfortable in tbe crate during the day is a different story 🫣 we have another crate out in the main living area we want him to get used to being in, but anytime he is in there with the door shut - even when we are in the room or right next to his crate - he barks and whines a LOT! I’m going to try encouraging him in with treats and not making a big deal when he exits, as you suggest. But wondering if, in the beginning when you did it for short periods of time, did your dog still whine a bunch? I’m so nervous to do it wrong and make him grow up to hate the crate, so just not sure how much barking/whining is okay in the beginning 🫣

@@KatieMarie we had this exact same issue. Eventually we only used the bedroom crate even for naps and he’s much better during the day. I think he needs the quiet to settle down and has too much FOMO if he can see us in the living room. Also really helped to give a treat when we nap him, even just a few carrots and he’s quiet at first and settles in.

Same!! I still don't know what's best! I chose not to let him cry which I think was the wrong thing because now I can't leave him! He crys for hours and try's to chew out the crate. He's 12 weeks old. I don't know what to do and videos on TH-cam are not helping!

@@kindpoisonat 12 weeks your puppy need aprox 20 hours of sleep a day. Make sure to make him a little bit tired by playing with him and letting him burn some of the steam off before you put him in. Then give him a chew toy or kong to ocupy and calm himself with. You can stay near by at the begining until he falls asleep

My husband raised German Shepherds all of his life. He never crated trained. Since his death, I need protection and I got 2 German Shepherds. We crated and they love it! 💕 They go into the crates on their own. It is security, their den. And…. Mama gets some private time. There is no privacy with Shepherds 😅

same with my 4 mo labrador puppy...jumps into my lap (already more dog than lap 😁), wants to incessantly chew at my pants and socks and roll around under my legs if I sit in a chair, etc. She happily naps in her closed, covered crate now. The BEST crate training advice was to provide a very high value, long-lasting chew - I had raw soup bones and knuckle bones from a 1/2 beef in the freezer - and then take it away when you open the crate. Now she runs into her crates often, just checking 👍

What can we do if we did all of the steps but our pup likes to growl and bark at us still. We tried the walk away method and if she's quiet will say Yes and treat the back of the kennel. But when we need to leave, she continues and even if we say ah or no.

I have a good-sized wire crate for my 7 month old puppy that I rescued a couple of weeks ago. I wondered if a crate cover would be a good idea. I’ve tried just using a sheet, but she pulls it down. I was wondering about a heavier cover that can’t be pulled in. Thoughts?

only crate train before meals. wait an hour or more past mealtime, sit by the crate with his bowl, toss A kibble at the door, repeat, gradually tossing a bit farther in. You have to completely re-condition his bad attitude. Good luck ❤️

Try a plastic dog crate with the top of first. Then add the top after she is comfortable. Takes a bit longer, but it works

Give all his meals in the crate. Play there and throw some treats let him walk and out. Don't close till he settles, give alot of alot of treat.
      How is he now?

In their other videos, they usually explicitly point out that you should place a board on top and then drape a towel over it so that there is enough distance between the crate and the towel, meaning the puppy can't reach. Maybe they forgot to mention that here.

    • @ckee8437
      @ckee8437 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Definitely only to be used for sleep and short periods, it will be outgrown soon. Once the pup doesn't require constant supervision the crate isn't used much during waking hours and they certainly would need a bigger one for even sleep soon.
