  • In this video, I will show you some simple things you can do when crate training isn't working. Puppy training can be a frustrating process if you've got a busy puppy. One of the best ways to keep your puppy from getting into trouble is to practice good puppy management, and a great way to do that is to use your crate for your puppy. A crate can keep your puppy safe, and allow you to always be giving your puppy good information as they explore the world!

    You hit the nail on the head..my 6 month PittBoxer learned the crate in 3 days..he's fine if I'm in front of him...as soon as I walk away..panic starts..I'm a new owner for him so he's still adjusting to me..new house..new environment..and a female dog who doesn't want him here.
    I want him to be good n quiet when I walk away like he is when I'm in bedroom with him in crate.
    I will try the long leash approach today...anything else or do I need to put crate where I am until he adjusts to his new home? He's super smart.

    The breeder recommended we make food and water constantly available but you guys recommend meal times for the food.... this is only one of the things that I’m confused about. Our puppy and I have been doing pretty well with many of your training activities, so I’m trying to teach my kids to also be good leaders with the dog. I’d love to see a video or get some tips on how to teach my kids to play well with the dog, they tend to get a bit crazy playing chase with the dog which I have told them not to because I don’t want the dog chasing kids! Thank you, your videos have been the most helpful by far!

    Our 11 week old puppy is doing very well with his crate training generally. He will happily go in for treats and all meals. Will sleep in there while we are home and we are able to move about the house without issue. He will go in and settle at home when we need him contained for short periods. Sleeps 6-7 hours in it at night in our room. However, we are trying to be able to put him in and leave him for short periods between our families work shifts and he is not having it even when he is VERY tired (or asleep) and has a special stuffed kong. Cries and carries on, pushes the tray out of the crate etc. Managed about 20 mins today until the mailman woke him up. Any hints? We will eventually need to leave him longer and want to get him prepared.

    Hi. I love your videos and you both are super positive people - amazing. I have one question. I have a puppy beagle and he is terrible in being quiet and staying in the crate over the night. From your experience should I give up and move the crate to the bedroom as he will never learn, or persevere and hope that after a week or so he will learn that staying alone in the living room over the night is ok?

    Okay, I have watched so many crate training videos, I have a new rescue that hates the crate and car seat and has seperation anxiety. She is definitely a velco dog and her previous owner must have had her on his lap constantly.
    I am trying to create seperation so she feels confident, she is not aloud to wonder the whole house and I try to crate her at different times of the day and use treats and do all that you have said.
    I’m to the point that she will go into the crate on her own because I’ve taken her bed away and don’t let her on the couch and I leave the door open so she can come in and out and she is okay with that beacuse it’s her choice, BUT she will NOT go in on command when I need her to and when I finally lure her in with treats or pour her in and close the door because I need to shower or due bills, etc. then she will whine cause she no longer has choice and is sperated from me.
    She will whine on and off and I ignore all whining and when she is quiet and I’m able, I let her out slowly. But I really need the help with crating on command.

    Hi,
    All the way from Quebec city, I have been a big fan of your training videos on youtube for the past few months. I am going to adopt a border collie puppy in 2 weeks, and i am in the process of buying a crate. I am currently looking at the petmate kennels, and I have seen that you seem to be using them as well. I was wondering which size you would suggest I buy. They seem to suggest the 32" on their website for border collie, but i am afraid it might be too small when Woody will be an adult. What size do you have?
    Thank you so much for you time,

    3 days home and my Golden crate use during sleep has been well. That might be because im next to her. All other times she wont stay in, food doesnt do it, tous dont do it. She snaps on the cold floor in front of it. I tried no bed because of the surface. When she grabbed a toy she would run to her fluffy bed, now that bed is in her crate, she takes toys away from it instead of being in it.

    I drive for a living. My new puppy is in a puppy carrier atm, and I'm unsure of the best approach to be able to keep the top of the carrier open.
    So far, he wants to escape. Who wouldn't. I get it it.
    I just tried repetition and reward. Didn't get to reward too much. He more frustrated and confused if anything.
    Should I focus on other basic training like luring to get him used to the concept of rewards first?
    Holding his harness/collar and waiting for him to settle partially works, until I let go.

    Since my puppy has come home, we have fed her inside the crate. What usually happens is she paws at the dish until its all over the floor of the crate, and refuses to eat it. We also tried the crate game of getting her inside the crate--she won't go passed the half way point, and completely ignores kibble/treats on the floor of the crate (only taking it from my hand--at the halfway point and then running out). I am going to try doing the crate game again with the door of the crate removed first thing after her morning potty break to see how she responds, then maybe some basic luring around the house before giving her breakfast in the crate--at the front of the crate (over time moving it further inside) with praise when she eats. Wish me luck!

    Your videos on crate training have helped my anxious 10 month old BC pup so much this past week. We are working up to being in her crate while we are at work (with a nice break in between). She still gets much more anxious when she knows we are actually gone and she can't hear us anymore. Will that usually start to get better with practice? We try leaving her a frozen Kong and a chew bone in there, but once that door is closed she doesn't even touch it no matter what is inside or if it's her favorite toy ever. Is there anything I can do that will help her want to still entertain herself while she's in there?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there, Caroline! I'm glad you've had so much success with your pup by following our videos! She will get more comfortable over time. But in the meantime, you should use her crate for short periods while you are home as well. The more comfortable she is when she's in her crate, the better. If you're nearby, you can place a tasty treat in there and let her go in and close the door. When she starts to engage with the treat or toy, you'll be able to praise her and reinforce her great behavior. On top of feeding her in her crate, you can play the fun restraint/fetch exercises where she runs into her crate, leaving the door open so she can come back out and try it again immediately. That exercise is a really fun one, and it's also a good way to burn off some of that puppy energy on a rainy (or snowy) day!

      I love this question, Michelle. You can definitely teach your 3-year-old Yorkie to love her crate as well. I did the same with A Labrador of the same age. It may take a little more repetitions, but it is certainly a good idea. It can be a really great way to reduce that separation anxiety as well, as she learns how relaxing and comfortable her crate can be. It seems like my pup gets more agitated when I'm in the room with him and he's practicing crate training. When we are doing short crate sessions he's really good. But he can only handle maybe 5 minutes or so at a time. But that doesn't work when he goes to bed, or when I have to work or whatever. It's only his 2nd day home, but I want to make sure I'm doing that right.

    Thanks for much for these videos! I'm finding with my 9 week old pup that when she does quiet down and we say "good girl" it makes her start screaming all over again. Is there something else I should try?

    • @orchardlea
      @orchardlea 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried throwing her a treat? It's been a while since you posted so maybe it's a phase that's passed already... but even just looking at the dog is a reward, so after the barking spell, looking at the dog for a short while might be enough reward if speaking to them starts up the barking again.

  • @malindamiller2609

    My pup is already crate trained but just wondering.... I know you are against eCollars. I am against shocking my dog as well but we used an eCollar beep to do the same thing as the leash attached to the crate door. Just to startle her in order for her to be quiet, long enough that we could reward her. In general we found the beep very effective, as we could be completely out of the room. Do you recommend against that? I guess I could see how it would be tempting to shock the dog since the option is right at your fingertips? My pup was a rescue and had some negative association with the crate already so we were never tempted to cause her anymore pain in there.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, Malinda! The trouble with the beep is that it doesn't mean much if it isn't associated with a negative stimulus. And the trouble with using an e-collar is that a misplaced zap can do a lot of harm. Not only is it painful, but it can be really confusing and scary. It's difficult to pair the beep with an undesirable outcome, and you aren't close enough to acknowledge the good behavior when your pup is quiet. That's why I suggest the "long-line" idea. It allows you to give your pup the information to be quiet, and it forces you to be close enough to be able to communicate with them the when they are quiet that they're doing the right thing. Hope that helps, Happy Training! ~Ken

      Oops -wrong key! It is cold here in Bc and while she has a longish fluffy coat and is protected from predators I still worry as she is so young! Should I go get her and put her back or just leave her outside ,which she obviously prefers? She does crate well through the day for an hour or so..love your show so much!

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, Susan! You should definitely be going outside with her, and be sure to have a leash on her as well. The last thing you want her to learn is that she doesn't have to listen to you unless you go out to get her. You'll also know right away if she's making noise to be let out because she just wants to go out and play, or if she actually does have to go potty. When she is done you can just walk her back indoors, and have her go into her crate, where she's safe and warm;)

    Please help! My puppy (6mo) doesn't care if I rattle her crate with a long line. It doesn't phase her hardly at all and she'll just keep barking or whining. She doesn't always whine in her crate. Must of the time, she's perfectly fine but she HATES it when we leave so I'm trying to work on this. I gave her a stuffed frozen Kong and bully stick, went out the front door, and she still barked. I left the long line right by the front door, came in quietly to grab that while she was barking and couldn't hear me come back in and rattled it. After the initial confusion, she went back to barking 5 seconds later, despite rattling it over and over. It wasn't really making much of a sound for some reason though. Maybe because of the corners of the house it was rubbing up against? Do you think if I can get it to rattle louder, it will work? Thank you!

    Hi I have a 8 month old puppy. He is a mixed breed dog part Blue Heeler and part BC. so he pretty high energy. How do I keep him from shredding his bed when he is in the crate ?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, Dave! You should remove all bedding from the crate if your puppy is shredding it. If you are able to supervise him, that would be a great opportunity to have him in his crate and you'll be able to see and hear him when he begins to chew and tear it. Then you can use your voice to mark that behavior. Puppies will do whatever it is that they find rewarding. Without you there to give him the information that it isn't acceptable, because it feels good, or he thinks it's fun, he will continue to do it. If you can break the habit of him destroying his bedding, or you're able to keep an eye on him in there, then he can have something like an old towel (or something you don't mind getting ruined) until you're confident that he isn't interested in chewing his bedding. Lots of puppies will stop doing that behavior after they have either been trained through it, or they haven't been able to rehearse the act of shredding their bedding for a while. Thanks for watching! ~Ken

    I'm planning on getting a puppy (small breed - shichon) and I want to potty train it to go both outside and inside (especially when I would take it to my office and wont be able to take it outside). Can you make a video about how to accomplish this? Should I train one form of potty training first or both at the same time? Any insight would be appreciated.

      Hi there, Kayla! That's not a problem if your puppy doesn't want treats in that situation. Simply praising him, and telling that he's good for being quiet is one way to mark that good behavior and reinforce it. Do you recommend anything for longer stints in the crate? Such as when I need to go shopping or during work hours. It would never exceed 4 hours but small puppy bladders raise some concerns for me when daily life must go on regardless of the puppy.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a great question, Taylor! Spending a little extra time playing with your puppy before they need to go in their crate is a good idea in that situation. It could be something as simple as playing a game of tug. Or working on some luring exercises. Or simply some recalls from one end of your hall to the other can really help your puppy to be ready to have a snooze when they go in their crate for a longer period. Take them out to potty before you leave, and they will have burned off enough energy that they'll be more settled in their crate. And taking them out to potty before they go in their crate will reduce the chance of them having an accident in there.

    I have had my 4 month old puppy for 2.5 weeks now and really struggling with this. I am confused at what methods to use. One of the videos says to interrupt with voice and praise when quiet and NO food. Another says to use food when they are quiet. So my puppy sleeps in her crate in my bedroom at night no problem. Not a peep, perfectly quiet. The problem is with the daytime. I do alot of training sessions , and long play sessions outside in my yard to tire her out. But when I put her in the crate to get some things around the house done or work, she gets super loud. Crying and whining, and now howling loudly. Fine if im in the room, but the second I walk away she starts. I have tried to interrupt her, but it only works a second. And I praise and say yes when she is quiet for a few or more moments, but it doesnt seem to help at all. If she is in my room and I shut the door (with her in the crate) and walk away she goes nuts. If I walk up to the shut door she stops. I dont know if she can smell me close or not. But im getting so frustrated. I dont want her barking and howling the entire time in her crate if Im gone if I leave home. Please help! P.S. we do crate training games and she only eats her meals in her crate. I think im doing it all right but nothing seems to work, and its gotten worse.

We tap on the crate and say quiet every time but it doesn’t help.. she whines every hour and a half to two hours so we always think she needs to go outside so we let her out and she pees in her spot right away! Then we bring her in and she willingly will in her crate but then she will whine for 20 minutes... any advice would help immensely as we’re getting no sleep at night...

    Feeding your dog in their crate isn't practical for people who feed their puppy's a raw food diet. You'd have bacteria all over their blanket and floor.
