And while this can work sometimes, there are lots of situations where that isn’t enough information for your dog to understand what you want from them. Hi there, Amanda! A collar will give you the best control of your puppy and it’s a much better piece of equipment during training. A harness is a great option once your puppy has learned their skills and it is something that your puppy can “graduate” to.
A properly fitted collar will be able to stay on your dog all of the time. You’ll need to check on the collar as your puppy gets bigger, to make sure it’s still the right size and with most collars you can adjust it to be the perfect fit. People have run into issues when their pups collar is too loose with their puppy wearing it overnight. So checking its size a couple of times every week as your puppy is growing, is always a good idea. Thanks for watching! ~Ken

I sat in front of the crate and every time my dog stop barking I gave him a treat and told him good boy then the longer he went without crying I really reward him with three treats. This dog is so quiet now in his crate it make me wonder is he ok. Lol
I need to do this ASAP because I need to sleep!!

How longg did it take?
I’m glad I’m not the only one having trouble with this. I’m going to try this tomorrow. I know it will take time. Edit: Two days later after putting food (breakfast and dinner) in his crate, kong, and having him practicing going in and out of his crate...he has stopped crying at bedtime for the past few days.
The issue is that many trainers give a lot of mixed advise. Sometimes I have had trainers say to stop the noise by giving treats, others say be silent. It really confusing not just me, but the furry one.
I think there is that mix advice bc not all dogs train the same, some react better to different techniques. The key is to try out something and if it dosnt work out then move on to the next one. What they all have in common is patience and effort, you need to show your dog that you are trying and they respond better.
Yeah I noticed sometimes if she settles down for a few mins and then I treat her and walk away again she’s like woah where are you going! And starts all over again 😂

Then others say ignore all noise from the pup. That they need to learn to self sooth. Goodbye sleep.
Tapping on the crate and then praising my puppy for being quiet worked like a charm. Now he loves his crate and doesn’t make any noise while in there. Great advice
This works! I have been crate training my new puppy for 9 days and all she does is scream and bark for hours. I live in an apartment so the noise has caused me so much stress due to neighbors complaining. I applied his suggestions today and it worked instantly for my puppy! I am so grateful! Thank you!

I can hardly believe how well that worked with my 9 week old puppy. He's generally very good but has a tendency to bark when I put him back in his play pen and walk away. Our little goldendoodle puppy is great in the crate at feeding times and at night but HATES when we give her crate time during the day. Working with her for just 15 rewarding her for settling down has already improved her behavior SO much!! Thank you!!

I have the exact same problem! He's a dream when he's tired and I make sure to tire him out before putting him in for a nap. He may whine a tiny bit but then he goes down pretty quick. But if I try to feed him in there he's never happy or even just to put him in for a minute to get some food! He barks like crazy!
Exactly! I’m going through this right now. My almost 2 year old Yorkie all of a sudden has a problem being in his crate. Never had it ever been a issue.

How is this going
I just brought home an 8 week old golden retriever and this has been so helpful. Specially with house breaking, he is spending lots of time in the crate and it’s day 5 and he goes in there willingly on his own now. 👌🏼

I love my dog but he does tend to give me a headache 😩 he did well in the crate up until a few months ago, now all he does is bark. I was ignoring him, sometimes that would work but most of the time it didn't. So I just tried the quite and praise and it worked after a quite a bit of tries. I'm gonna keep on trying this method. Your advice works!!! Thank you so much for making these videos for us, for free. Two night ago we had about 2 hours of sleep due to our puppy crying and barking in their crate. Our previous dog never fussed in the crate, so we thought the right thing to do was to let the dog “bark it out”. Last night, within 5 minutes of following your advice on tapping the crate with “uh uh or no”, the barking and whining stopped. We had a full nights sleep, thanks to you!!

We recently got a dog, and she was never crated. We only want her to be familiar with that crate for vet visits, emergencies, etc. We may crate her overnight, but she actually does really well in a dog bed in our room. Regardless, she's 10.5 weeks old, but already terrified of the crate and just whines and barks. I'll definitely have to try some tips from here

I have a Samoyed puppy that absolutely hates her crate and took several months to even tolerate it. None of the suggestions from any video I watched ever helped. The one thing that did help me was to be very consistent with putting her in the crate. Anytime I noticed her about to nap I would put her in. Once she calmed down and was quite for a minimum of 5 minutes (differing the time every time) I would let her out. Rinse and repeat. She got so tired that barking and fighting was the last thing she wanted to do. It helped her associate the crate with a place she can sleep.

Ok question. My dog will willingly go in the crate when I tell her to and as long as she can see us she does fine, she doesn’t mind being in there but as soon as we leave she bark and whines incessantly. I watch her on our cameras and she barks for hours. But as soon as we walk in the door she stops barking because she knows she only get to come out when she is quiet. Help!

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much, but he barks A LOT... So, leaving home is always a challenge for us. My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? Knocking on the crate to break him from barking and whining is working so well, I use present tense because I'm watching this at 2:43am. I'll try and use his cage a bit more during the day, not just for time out
Thank you. I just got a second dog. My first dog can stay in his crate for 9 hours and be fine. But the puppy is now barking. The crates are in the hall far from the bedroom. I don’t want to move the puppy into my room and not my other dog to our room because it’ll be confusing for my first dog and then my first dog will be sad the new puppy gets to go into the bedroom and he doesn’t. the quiet trick seems to be working, I've been with my dog all day working on kennel, peeing outside, and now whining. I've had him for 4 days and his whining is the worst so far. the only place in the house is my bedroom for him and he was whining all night. so far I have been able to be away from him for 1 hour,, the best hour of my life
So I did crate training with my 8week old Labrador, and she stayed inside the whole time I was actually stoked about it the second time I showed her the food and she went in and waited for the food which was adorable, but she still doesnt love the crate ( mainly goes in when I want to feed her) , I leave her in the backyard during the day with the crate door open but she doesnt go in voluntarily, should I just keep doing what Im doing? Or should I keep her in the crate more
I work from home, my puppy is with me in my office in his crate. He doesn’t bark at night… barks during the day when I leave the room, to the bathroom, the kitchen, etc… I’ll try these suggestions, thank you!!!
Hello McCann Dog Training, I intend to purchase an 8-week old miniature schnauser what size of crate would you recommend and... I intend to travel a lot with my dog. So, would you recommend a Plastic or Metal crate ???
Our puppy is perfect at night in the crate and usually perfect during the day too. The real issue is when he's in his puppy play pen. While I'm working(from home) I want him to be able to stretch his legs, but if I'm in the room he will bark constantly. I taught him to settle and be quiet, but as soon as that's over and I go back to my business he just starts up again. It's driving me nuts.
My puppy is going to be 1 next week. She slept in her crate through the night until she was spayed. Now she doesn't sleep let alone in her crate. Oddly she actually loves her crate. She will go in it with no problem when I am going out or when I shower. You can see she fights sleep. If she sleeps 6 hours in a 24 hr period thats s lot. I haven't slept in 6 months!

He only quiets when I let him out and if I stay there with him (he follows me around everywhere). If I’m not there he destroys things. I will definitely try these tips!!

This is great, but what if one uses this method and stops barking after the "quiet" cue or the rap on the crate and then starts up again right after that?
Struggling with this issue with our 9 week old BT. She does okay if you put her in the crate to sleep but if she’s awake she whines/barks and if she sees you the more worked up she gets. Been feeding her in there and trying to teach her to be quiet while in there but she never settles down even if she’s tired. At night when she wakes up I take her outside but maybe that’s confusing her? I know she has to go out though?!

Answering this in case anyone needs answers now for this type of issue. Cover the crate with a breathable blanket or crate cover. It tones down there sense so they can calm down. We have a beagle pup and as they are "seekers" it helps his nose and sense chill so he can sleep. We had to use the above techniques when he started barking in the crate after a week. He did need the specifics of "what I should be doing in here."

What if it's the first night you have brought your puppy home and they are constantly whining? Tips for handling that? I am picking up my corgi in a couple of weeks. I bought a wire crate first week I took my puppy home. It was a life changer but an oopsie happened during the night and one of your video truly made a difference to the crate experience!
My dog doesn't bark at home nor in the crate but doesn't settle well in his new plastic Medium size crate even with a bone, his toy, watching us. He'll shake in the crate so much so he almost roll over with it !

The problem with my pup is he only barks when we leave him and move out of site. Makes it much more difficult to give it treats once its quiet. Is yelling "NO" when it barks the followed by a "Good Quiet" the right way to go about this or am I giving him the attention he's looking forward to? I'm conflicted with the silent treatment method or stopping the behavior right away then positive reinforcement once he's silent? Any help would be appreciated.
What would you suggest if we have tried all this and he’s still doing it. 13 year old Springador & it’s getting worse. He’s absolutely trashed his bed and is in there for hours in a morning before he’s quiet to be let out
Hi, my golden was a nightmare the first week home and then he was perfect, he’d sleep in his crate during the day in my room then about 3 weeks ago he’s started to whine again in his crate..I bought a bigger crate incase his other one was a little small for him but there’s still issues..I Ignore the whines at night but sometimes it goes on for an hour at a time when I’m trying to sleep..is he just being rebellious or is there something I’m missing? 🙏🏼 thanks!
Just try going back to some of the kennel games, remind them that it's a really good place to be.
Cover the crate with a dark sheet or blanket at night. You can also give them a nylabone to keep them busy in there till they get tired.
Should I use the same crate for day and night then? I’ve been using one smaller, more “den” like one during the day that she quite likes and a larger, more open crate at night. I think she’s associating that larger one with me going to bed.
She barks and after a while starts to cry. She sometimes reverts to playing with her toys and then I notice her trying to self soothe. (Lays down, shifts, lays down again again). All this takes a long time too and she just seems stressed. I’ve used soothing music, which works well, but I don’t want to have to rely on that all the time, going forward.
Could bringing her daytime crate upstairs help for nighttime?
Also; is barking in the middle of the night the only way for her to tell me she needs to go potty? It wakes everyone up.
Not sure if anyone has any advice. We recently got a puppy about a week ago. We exercise her often throughout the day and play with her often. We take her on two long walks to the park. When we are done with the walk we run around the yard and play chase with her. We keep her awake most of the time during the day. She is great on a leash already, very sweet, and goes potty well. BUT at night it’s a whole different story. We have tried the crate in the bedroom…unless my hand is in the crate she barks and cries for hours. We read that the crate shouldn’t be in the bedroom so we put it in the livingroom. We have set it up like “disneyworld” as we were told but also comfortable. We play with her near the crate. We have hidden treats in the crate for her to find. She continues to bark, howl and cry for 3 hours straight. It’s so loud we can hear her from one end of home to the office in the building the home is attached to. Which is a long distance and many rooms from one another. HELP! Not sure what more we can do.

Hello! I love your videos, and I’ve used them to get my dog comfortable in his crate. He sleeps in it through the entire night without barking. He’ll go in and out without any issues - but whenever I leave the room, like to go to work or run errands. He barks like a mad man for hours. His bark is very whiny and he definitely has some separation issues, it’s been weeks and it hasn’t improved. Any tips?
Hi there, Hannah! Yes, this can seem like an impossible task when your pup only makes noise when you're away. You need to use his crate more frequently for short periods. On a day where you aren't working, have him go into his crate then pretend you're going to work. Pop back in a minute later and repeat the process for varying lengths of time throughout the day. He understands that when he goes in his crate at a specific time, you'll likely be gone for "X" amount of time. By breaking up the cycle, he will be less likely to get anxious when you leave. You can also break up that cycle by leaving him with something like a frozen Kong. Stuffing something tasty in there, and putting it in the freezer overnight will make it last a lot longer, and he will be more distracted over the day by having something to investigate and chew. @@McCannDogs thanks for your videos they are so valuable. My pup has separation anxiety as well and he howls like mad non stop when we leave the room or the house. We are trying tiny 1-2min exposures and returning before the howl gets intense. Any sense of how long we need to keep doing this before we can actually leave our home? We feel like prisoners despite doing all the things.
I’ve tried leaving a kong with treats in the crate when I’m gone but Always come back to 💩. I wish I could leave it for him since it can occupy him for a good 30 mins but it seems more trouble than it’s worth. Any advice for this?

Feel like this all make sense but, my pup loves his crate but rn whenever i feed him he gets nuts, bark bites, pees, jumps for 2h even if i involve trick training and long walks in that period hes still super hyper when we get home. And if i leave him in crate while im in the same room for him to calm will he not be scaredof the crate? Rn he just barks until i com to him sit there and calm him,then i open cus i dont want him to calm down and pee in his crate, but as soon as i let him out it starts all over. So any videos of how to handel dogs with tantrum that has been activated physicaly and mentaly but just dont realise they are tired?

My Puppy is 4 months old and recently we bought crate for him... We have put all his toys in the crate and all his eatings given in crate only. But he doesn't play with the toys. He goes in the crate only for eating which he finishes in two secs and once he is finished, he starts crying.
Should I be covering or partially convering the crate during the day? As school has started my Aussie now has to spend 3-4 hours a day in her crate during the daytime. Barking isn't an issue ever at night but during the day today it was constant (I work third shift so I was trying to sleep). I'll certainly be trying to work on the other things here but it's a wire crate so I wasn't sure if maybe limiting her sensory options might help.
Hi there, Wes! Sometimes that can help. What’s more helpful is using the crate at random times, for random amounts of time. Make it as relaxing an experience as possible, and make sure you’re trying to use your crate sometimes when you don’t need to. So that you’re able to focus on training through the barking. Covering the crate is worth a try. But the tried and true method to ensure some good sleep is to treat this behavior like any other training exercise. Thanks for watching ~Ken
im really stressed rn because i got a new puppy, we put a couple of treats in his crate taught him to go in and come out. he is barking and i know i shouldn't bother and its his first time so i should be patient but it scaring me out and making me cry... thank you so much for this video im trying to do what you said! hopefully it goes well.

Just got a new Golden. Got him at 10 weeks, he’s now 11 weeks. In a bit over a week and now when I open the door and he waits sits and waits to be invited out. He cries for a minute or so after going in, but quiets down after that. He only goes in for a treat held at the back, but he’s ready and willing to make that trade.
I have a Labrador Retriever Pit Bull mis he has zooms if energy and bites his leash, I think I’m doing this appropriate, I’m saying NO then grabbing a treat telling him to sit, lay down.. and giving him a treat then moving him to his crate but then he goes in there and barks, I’m having trouble but ignoring him is working but it’s hard to do
What happens if you share a room with toddler and infant and can’t have dog crate in bedroom with you- should one of us be out on the couch to correct the barking until the dog knows and then transition crate into bedroom after a few nights of not barking?
I have a deaf french bulldog. She is 9 mos old. I have tried a couple of your suggestions. I also have 2 other 9 mos old frenchies, they do fine in their crates, but my deaf girl doesnt respond to vibrations or tapping. I have to lay down by the crate so she can see me and when she falls asleep, all is good. But this is not the right method. She is responding well to hand signal training. Leash training has been very difficult. I would greatly appreciate any advice!
ADD: every night if she is left out of the crate bc of crying, she eats the house or garage...wherever she is left sleeping. She wakes up about 3 hrs earlier than the hearing pups and is destructive to anything in her reach. I have lost most vacuum tools and remotes bc of this behavior.
How long would be too long for a barking period? For example we have a new GSD and she barks constantly in her crate. I'm scared she's going to develop separation anxiety due to me working from home. I put her in the crate at different times of the day but she always barks amd never really settles. Its currently day 3. Is that to early or do I need to give her more adjustment time?
Ive noticed that you prefer the plastic crates over the wire crates, do you feel that provides more of a den type setting for them ? Or why is it that you prefer these crates? Thanks!!
It"s a smaller space which makes it less likely for your puppy to soil his bed
What if you can't move your dog upstairs? My dog has a large crate, so we don't know if there's enough space for him in our rooms.
What about a 11 week old puppy that constantly barks the moment you put them in there? Do I still put them in there during the day while there barking? I tried treat training him but he is too nervous that I’m going to put him in there.
My family struggles. My cavapoo is horrible lol. He loves to bark time we hit the bed!!!! Man I start letting him run most of the day in the back fence. An entire half an acre. I have to tire him out to even sleep!!!
My puppy is with me for a week now and he used to be free at the apartment when i bought the crate 2 days ago and tried this tips but he went crazy in there and bark for hours nonstop and he was very very angry when he's out and biting everyone
Sounds like you need some movable fencing so you can let them out of the crate but still have him fenced off from the rest of the room

I have the same issue. We have a 5m old and a 6 yr old and the little one stresses if the older dog leaves. Also he screams in his crate because the older dog is free.
Any suggestions?
