  • What's up scuba homies? Today we are looking at some of my favorite Kiss Sidewinder Tips and Tricks with the Hollis Katana 2! As a technical rebreather instructor, I have had to come up with a lot of solutions to my student's problems as well as my own. These are some of my favorite rebreather hacks to make my life easier when I'm CCR diving. Let me know in the comments section if you have any tricks that you like to use! Remember! I should mention that the new cell splitter board from KISS should isolate the computers and prevent the problem I mentioned.

      I guess it just depends on how long you want to wait. This is just a guess, but I figure they're still around a year out. It's gonna take a little while to get instructors updated as well, though they are working on that as we speak. I like the sidewinder as is, so if you're in a hurry it's still a great option. If you have time to wait though, you'll get the latest and greatest.

    Can you do a video on how to travel with a CCR?
    I am looking at picking one up for better underwater videography and photography (no bubbles to scare the fish), but am very unsure about traveling with one. I’d love to know tips on packing it, travel save a dive kit stuff for it, and then diving with charter groups that are on open circuit and working with the dive operators to let you do it on CCR (think Caribbean dive travel through a local shop’s trip and you’re on CCR when everyone else is OC).

      I’ve travelled extensively with my sidewinder. Pack it in a backpack and carry it on. I was only asked once what it was. I get more “inspections” for my canister lights.

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      2 liter, 3l is too long to but mount it. It ends up banging against your bailouts. I have seen people mount a 3l vertically on the back of older sidemount BCDs like the sms75/100. Seemed to work fine.

      Totally can, I come back to Houston all the time. My folks still live there. Always happy to dive the blue lagoon and I'm sure I could convince the woodlands dive center to sell me some pool time. I just need to coordinate it in advance. I'm heading to Houston later this month and also in July. Probably at least one more time this year as well.

    Something I've wondered for a while, why not change out the kiss counter lungs for over the shoulder ones so you have a water trap in the loop
    (And for that matter, where is the dump valve in the kiss for dil flushes/bailout ascents?!)

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great questions! The sidewinder counterlung is one of the best parts of the unit. Keeps the unit super balanced because its lower amd makes perfect trim effortless. The unit is actually a lot more flood tolerant than you might imagine. Edd Sorenson repeatedly flood tested it and found that it could hold a substantial amount of water and still function.
      The over pressure valve is on top of the left canister. You can elbow it to activate it manually. Although my dil flush procedure doesn't involve the opv.
      Thanks for the questions!

    I have a SW on order and initially want to use a single Petrel computer for the O2 display. When I progress to deco dives I am intending to add a NERD as the second/backup display. You are only using a single device connected to the O2 sensors. Can you talk me through some of the pro's and con's of wiring two devices to the sensors or just keeping to a second stand alone computer. Kiss supply a splitter circuit board, which is supposed to isolate the computers if one of them goes faulty. I am expecting far more issues with the sensors and wiring rather than the computer. (I am an electronics designer by trade so I do understand the limitations of using resistors to isolate two receiver circuits)

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  ปีที่แล้ว

      When I first started diving the unit, we had very simple cell splitters that would deliver a different mv reading to the remaining computer if one were to fail. So I moved my petrel 2 off of a fischer cable and run it stand alone, then I adjusted my emergency procedures accordingly.
      I dont think that's an issue for the new splitter board, but I'm happy with my setup. One less cable to deal with is fine by me. Most people run this thing with a single computer and then an offboard backup.
      I hope that helps.

    What reasons you didn’t go with a full Shrimp BOV opposed to the selected Shrimp DSV?
    Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The hose supplying the bov and the extra bulk of the bov itself make them kinda annoying on the sidewinder. Routing the bov supply hose is tricky as well.
      I keep a 2nd stage on a necklace under my chin and I think its a good idea for anyone not diving a BOV to do the same.

    • @SeattleRingHunter
      @SeattleRingHunter 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DiveVibe After asking this questions I came across Gus and Woody's interview today from three years ago with Georgia Hausserman. They spoke in detail as for the major pros for going with a DSV opposed to an BOV. Les weight clenched to the jaw and the improved work of breathing. Its makes sense now after stoping and thinking how it would be in the mouth. Thanks for the response. Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter

    I don't dive a sidewinder but I do dive a swift on my Spirit.. The trick I did was run the transmitter up to my shoulder that way its tight against me but also close enough to the nerd for receiving.

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im glad you brought that up, because its definitely a possible solution with the sidewinder. I like that method a lot with the spirit, because its easy to do with the frame. It's a little more cumbersome on the winder as it definitely creates an extra step during assembly/disassembly, but if you want a transmitter it will work. Thanks Patrick!

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  ปีที่แล้ว

      There was enough webbing for me, not too much left over, but a bit, definitely plenty of room in the waist. I'm 6'5" and weigh around 300lbs, so it should have enough webbing for MOST people.
