The lore behind this boss is that he was the first hunter of the healing church, seeking to establish an order to slay beasts and help protect people. However, when we find him he has become consumed by the hunt, becoming a beast himself. He has taken on beastial form become a horse-esk creature with way too many legs. In the first phase (Ludwig the accursed) he fights as a beast, screaming and charging and stomping to attack. As the first phase finishes he collapses and his sword which was sheathed on his back falls out and lands in front of him. The sword is the holy moonlight blade, a teal glowing sword that has been a staple in the souls series. Upon seeing it he states, “ah… so you were by my side all along, my true mentor, my guiding moonlight.” Having seen the blade he seems to remember himself, remember his glory and honor, and his duty. He realizes what he has become, but also what he must do; and so he tests you, fights you, no longer as a beast but as a man. He rears upright, straightens his back and becomes once again “Ludwig the Holy Blade”. Upon which the second phase begins. The second phase of the fight is, much more distinctly, a dance when compared to the first. He fights and swings his sword smoothly and gracefully. He has reclaimed his humanity, and in doing so, is given the chance to die as one, rather than a beast like the ones he hunted.
My favorite part about these Bloodborne tracks is that they're singing in Latin. There are actual lyrics to these songs which usually tell the story of the boss.
I second checking out Father Gascoigne's track, also called "The Hunter." If you haven't already done it, Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower is also incredible!
The 2nd part being perfect requires a little in game lore explanation: In Bloodborne, the City of Yharnam is lost due to multiple reasons. From a Beasthood Plague to Outer Gods. Throughout multiple instances, you heard how Yharnam had a heroic Hunter who was respected and beloved by everyone for his might. Ludwig was the one last hope to save Yharnam. But the main game never explains his status or whereabouts. The DLC however elaborates the sad truth. Ludwig got very far, further than pretty much anyone else but he too underwent a grotesque transformation into a hideous and bloodthirsty monster who seems to have fused somehow with his horse. The first phase is Ludwig being a beast among beasts. The 2nd Phase where it hyped up is Ludwig regaining his humanity after seeing his Moonlight Greatsword who he refers as his mentor and guiding moonlight. Ludwig did the unthinkable and defeated his inner beasthood through sheer force of will to do battle for one last time. He doesnt want to die as a monster who lost his senses but as the once proud warrior he was. He does all kinds of energy blast with his swordy energy arcs and you can even see the humanity you could say as he raises his sword, his hair flowing as he gathers energy to try and blast you away. He wants you to finish him and end his suffering but he does not want to die without resistance either cause thats against everything he stands for.
From Software Games are filled with heroes, with great kings and generals and leaders who through some flaw or the inequities of fate found themselves cursed, twisted and corrupted into mindless beasts. We always meet them well beyond the point that they've lost themselves, sputtering embers of who they used to be or their old strength, but Ludwig is the one time where we see the reverse, at the beginning of the fight hes a monster, a slavering beast flailing wildly and screeching in his madness, but then he sees his sword and suddenly the humanity comes back, for a time he becomes the hero he was again. In a way its horrifying to see that hes still awake in there, malformed as he is now, but at the same time its powerful to see the strength of will to survive despite it
Hey man, great video. When reacting to Bloodborne OSTs sadly there is a small mistake most people do and that is listening to the wrong version. In general no OST just fades out at the end (besides two exceptions in the entire soulsborne series). There is a guy called Ninjabox who actually uploaded the entire soundtrack in way better quality and in the original, unedited format. It’s a quite different and better experience overall. For the most time I didn’t knew versions like that even existed because these edited/extended lower quality versions are so common. The final boss theme of that game is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time and only by listening to the high quality version made me noticed about 3 more instruments in there. When it comes to the other games the best way too listen to them it via one of the composers TH-cam channels like Yuka Kitamura for example. Although Bandai Namco also uploaded some themselves. It’s just different with Bloodborne due to some legal stuff.
Great video! I have been enjoying the Shadow of the Erdtree OST reactions and I hope you continue reacting to souls games music. Here are some recommendations: DS2: Burnt Ivory King DS3: Slave Knight Gael Bloodborne: Laurence the First Vicar Elden Ring base game: Final Battle, Mohg the Lord of Blood, Godskin Apostle
Bloodborne has a lot of incredible ost ! I can give you some other like : - Lady maria - Father Gascoigne - Living failures - Laurence first vicar - Gehrman the first hunter
I heard you mention the Jaws theme a couple of times in the beginning of the video. Because of that, I’d like to recommend the Father Gascoigne OST, also from Bloodborne. Great analysis by the way. Keep up the videos!
This track always gets a lot of recognition (which it deserves), but I personally prefer the theme for Laurence the First Vicar. It's a masterpiece, imo.
As many others in this comment section are suggesting, please listen to Laurence the First Vicar. I like it just as much if not more than Ludwig's theme
Yeahh, this is probably still the best piece of music Fromsoftware ever put in a game. It's goosebumps every single time! I agree with other commenters saying to check out more Bloodborne music, I especially recommend Gehrman the First Hunter. But beyond that, I really think you should look into the music of Monster Hunter World/Iceborne and Monster Hunter Rise/Sunbreak sometime. They have amazing music with so much character! Personal favorites (World): Brachydios and Raging Brachydios, Velkhana and Arch-tempered Velkhana, Nergigante, Shara Ishvalda, Alatreon and Fatalis. (Rise): Mizutsune, Magnamalo, Crimson Valstrax, Malzeno, Gaismagorm
I think you would like the Living Failures ost from Bloodborne a lot of people sleep on it but I personally think it's one of the best tracks in the game
You’ve entered the Bloodborne ost on one of the best tracks in the game, and while I really want to recommend you listen to Gehrman next, I really think you should save that for last. Father Gascoigne is a great track to follow up on next!
Seems you’re a fan of strings and always point out the Altos/Sopranos , how bout you try out Lawrence the first vicar, it’s what you seem to like except it doesn’t have a lot of Alto vocal
It was an easy boss fight. Was honestly disappointed. I've heard that he was one of the hardest bosses just to beat him in 3 tries. Still a good boss though
tbh Ludwig imo is a liiiittle bit too overpraised. It SLAPS but I think Laurences and Living Failures are superior. Pls give them a listen! Specially Living Failures, its very Holst
@@skullton1121 i prefer Living Failures bc i think its way more balanced. Ludwig is meant to be bombastic, but this for me ends up being too overpowering. Living Failures on the other hand has a more steady curve into an absolute amazing climax. Ludwig for me is too much for a listen. Altho this particular reason that makes me prefer Failures over Ludwig, is what i think makes Ludwig a better combat BGM. I prefer Living Failures as a stand alone track for active listening
@@latiaos11 I still disagree, the other day I was listening to Ludwig’s track and I paid really close attention to the instruments, and I heard something I never heard before, and it changed the whole song for me. It’s a masterpiece and I pick up new stuff whenever I listen to it. Like when the choir is going insane and yelling there’s another choir underneath them which is why the song has lyrics. And the lore and everything behind the song is amazing. Literally in one of the parts the instruments are supposed to resemble Ludwig and it makes sounds like a horse. I personally feel like Ludwig has so much to it and if you pay attention every now and then you’ll hear something new and now you can’t un hear it, which changes the song a lot. Which is why I love Laurence’s ost a lot, and Gerhman. Lady Maria is 4th for me but it’s still good, I mean the second phase is her literal character development infront of our eyes and ears.
CURSE YOU BA- oh, i mean TRUE MENTOR, MY GUIDING MOONLIGHT... (Horse laughing)
NEIGHAHAHA
Wrong game dude
I dream of one day waltzing in a ballroom to The Holy Blade...
you'd probably a villain but a cool one
Hey, it's a perfectly good waltz! Even The Accursed part is one, if one squints a bit, but The Holy Blade is one through and through.
@@kacperdrabikowski5074to me it feels more like 6/8 rather than 3/4 but i guess it works more or less
@@coaiegrup You have always have Maria if you want a proper waltz
Fun fact: Bloodborne is the only of From Software's games where the latin lyrics are actual latin, and not just latin-sounding gibberish!
I hate to be that guy but Laurence and Gehrman also get actual Latin. But yeah its always nice when they actually use it.
@@slavicgerman5104 Yes, and they are also in Bloodborne. I meant compared to their other games, not Ludwig compared to other bosses
@@Nick-jt5nb ah yeah fair. I misread the comment.
I believe "song of lament" in eldin ring is also actually Latin. It's the song the bat ladies sing
