Ludwig’s music is so poetic when compared to his fight. Like someone else in the comments said, you hear about him, but when you meet him you aren’t met with disappointment, but disgust. Like “This is the great hero they talked about? But… Look what he is now?” you’re fighting this horrific monster, and finally when he falls, he gains his humanity by seeing his once lost weapon, and you finally see what the legends were talking about.
You see the legendary Ludwig, but not by physical form, but his powerful demanding voice, albeit between winnie’s and neighs, his tall stature standing proud, despite him looking horrifying, and his weapon he holds confidently and elegantly, despite it not quite fitting in with his appearance.
You know that this is the Ludwig you were told about. It doesn’t look like him, but you know, from the way he presents himself, that this was the legend, and no matter how far from grace he’s fallen he’s regained his sanity that he was denied for so long that he deserves.
The absolutely best part is the gameplay elements, how serrated weapons did more damage as he’s considered a beast enemy, but in his second phase, amidst his newfound composure and respect for his opponent (you) that he once tried to devour, they no longer work. It’s like the game is saying “The monster you once fought was killed by Ludwig, and now you fight not just a man, but a legend.”
The second phase music is so good, I’m sure everyone knows how the fight turns into a mad waltz, but I always imagine the more poetic aspect is the hunter in this struggle against this massive creature, fighting with extreme intensity, and as a hunter you see him as a beast, nothing more. He’s another animal to be put down. But like I said before, once he becomes the holy blade, the song turns from struggle to dance, as in the hunter realizes he’s no longer facing the same opponent, and instead of putting down an animal, it’s like both Ludwig and the hunter silently agree with “Let’s finish this properly.”
Fromsoftware is so fucking good. Sorry about the huge rant there, I love bloodborne so much.

    • @Never_heart
      @Never_heart ปีที่แล้ว +41

I love Ludwig's fight for this reason, it captures a possibly the most important theme from Berserk so well, that humanity is not a measure of how we are above or different from monsters. Humanity is the act of choosing to struggle against the fate we have been handed. That the simple act of choosing to choose is what makes us human. Ludwig needed to see his sword to give him a boost then he chose. What his body looked like does not matter because at that moment he chose and he became human

This isn't classical music, a lot of people think that any kind of orchestral musical is called "classical", but classical refers to music written in the classical period (approx. 1750-1820, after the baroque period, before the romantic period). Think Hadyn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven (though some argue that he's a romantic composer, I think probably just a mix).
This isn't even written in a classical style, it's just instrumental game music. Very, very well composed game music.
      -----------Essay warning------------
      Key features of Bloodborne OSTSs:
      Orchestral techniques:
      -Clusters
      -Aleatoric techniques
      -Tremolos
      -Layered dissonant harmony
      -Rhythmic ostinatos
      -Soaring melodic lines
      General characteristics- choir:
-Use of large, prominent 32-person SATB choir.
-Choir division- from 3-note chords to 8-note dissonant chords
      -Vocal effects (clusters, slides, murmurs)
Unrelentingly dissonant, broad emotional palette, somber, soaring, nightmarish, tormented, often very loud.
Classical music was generally very elegant and structured with an emphasis on balanced phrasing, intending to be easy on the ear. Melodies were often fairy short with functional harmony- clear cadence points (though, classical music often changed keys, mood and timbres) and lots of homophonic textures (single melody with chord like/hymn like accompaniment).
VERY different to how BB music is written.
I don't take music anymore, but I'm fairy sure that even using tritones back in the classical period was a big no-no. They called it the "Devil's Chord" because it was so unpleasant to listen to, I think it might have even been illegal! (someone fact check me on this please). Safe to say, if this had been released during the classical period, everyone would have thought Nobuyoshi an avatar of Satan and have him executed or something haha
It was fun flipping through my old GCSE music notebook to write this, hope anyone who read this found this interesting! :)

What would you name this exact type of music?
Hearing 'game music' makes me think of rudimentary Mario beep-boops, low pace ambient tunes in Skyrim, Minecraft, background non vocal rock in Dynasty Warriors and other large clusters of nearly random music.
What would you call the music of Bloodborne, Shadow of the Colossus, Demon Souls Remake, and Lost Ark's Astalgia of Phantasm?
Dissonant Classical? Violent Pseudo Classical? Cinematic Orchestral? Violent Orchestral?

I remember playing the The Old Hunters DLC the day before Thanksgiving in 2015. My brother came over and we were getting food ready for the next day and playing Bloodborne on two separate consoles, side by side on two different TVs. We stayed up all night exploring it. I got to Ludwig first and when I got to phase 2 the first time (took me a few attempts) I was so blown away by the music I just stood there and he killed me.
My brother was like , “Bro, what were you doing?”
I responded “Did you hear that music?”
He was like, “I wanted to keep listening but you got killed 😫😫”
    That’s a good memory.

Ludwig is mentioned constantly throughout Bloodbornes lore so us finding him in his monstrous state is such an interesting feeling. The track accentuates this perfectly and makes Ludwig one of the most memorable bosses in the SoulsBorne genre.

It mirrors the 3/4 to 6/8 descent into madness of Laurence’s theme, with phase 2 becoming a mad waltz. I always thought of the cello as his real self that is trapped and deafened in a cacophony of the voices in his head from becoming blood starved while obsessing over his blade. And the moment he finds his sword (the part where the voices start shouting until silence) he finally becomes clear in mind, and becomes himself again... Silencing all the voices and he is now fully focused at the task in front of him; the hunter that he must defeat; forcing all the voices to follow HIS lead; to not be drowned out.

I love how his theme so perfectly portrays the disgust from himself and us by just sounding kinda off with that chorus and strings, while still sounding emposing and massive.
In the second phase he shifts into something menacing, the disgust is not important anymore, all that matters is that he is going to kill you and you have to do everything in your power to not die
yet it all has that light string sound so honorable

"Ah... There you are, my friend..."
I love the way you can literally pinpoint the moment he sees his blade and regain his humanity in his music at 7:52
The first time you fight this monstrosity, you don't even pay attention to the music that much. Phase one is just typical. It is low humming in the background from the chorus and the wild lashing of a beast. It is normal. It is safe. You expect this. He is reckless, but you have dealt with reckless beasts, and he is no different. Then the music changes. The cutscene plays. It is such a small scene, but theres this strange feeling of unease as you see the holy glow of his blade reflecting in what little of his human face. Then his eyes glow alight, brighter than the blade itself. And he smiles. Suddenly, the music is *alive*. This beast, no longer hunched and slaving at the mouth, stands on all his legs with a straightened back. This is no beast anymore. This is Ludwig, the Holy Blade. The sweeping brass and chorus adds to the panic as you realize that you arent hunting anymore; you are fighting for your godforsakened life against the strongest and the oldest of the hunters. Ludwig has returned to the hunt one last time.
Once you become familiar with the fight, its fascinating in this horrific way that he is literally dancing with you in rhythm to the song. He is having the time of his life in who knows how long. One last honorable waltz of death to reclaim the glory of his olden days. Each strike with his partner is beautiful. It is as intimate as a man and his bride, as close as brother in arms. And it can only bring a question to mind; just how many fell to his waltz before we ended his madness?

I love this ost soo much, if you look at the latin lyrics, at first he praises the blood, the holy blood (sanguine sanctum), then there’s a 20 second pause where just music plays which symbolizes the passing of time, time in which people used and abused the holy blood. After that, Laurence realizes the blood’s side effects and start asking if it’s blasphemy.
The part where music stops and words are spoken menacingly is when he realizes the blood is evil and tries to tell everybody to stop, spread the word, but nobody will listen
The beautiful violin (edit: cello*) symbolizes laurence’s transformation into a beast, and after it he praises the holy-blood in a way more worrying way than in the beginning, like he’s completely controlled by the blood, unable to rationally think
    AHHH It’s beautiful

One of the brilliant details of this song is that it's sung from the point of view of LUDWIG'S SWORD, it refers to itself as mentor and companion to Ludwig even after he turned to a beast.
It's a great, almost mythological angle to take for the song and I personally love it.

I can't decide if I like Ludwig's or Gael's theme more. Ludwig is one of the best songs i've heard, the ,,Holy Blade" melody is so catchy and just beautiful, but Gael's theme has beautiful three parts where every phase is just more powerful, and that third phase... God it's so good.
Anyway, I think that Ludwig is one of best bosses in the video game history, period. I've never been so shocked, hyped and sad after the battle ended. The first time i've heard ,,THAT PART" of the song while Ludwig was attacking me to the rhythm of his theme was just too much for me, I just did a little break from Bloodborne to think about this beautiful moment, SO EPIC.

Don't forget that this entire song is also aided by the boss battle itself. The first half as a screaming abomination that once was a man tries to trample and devour you. The second half as the Man emerges from the monster and continues the path of murder, but with skill and finesse. His intention is still your demise, but he has become the same form of beast he was when he earned his wicked curse. A man, a monster. A sainted sinner.

My favorite boss of all time, right there. I've faced him like dozens of times, and yet I get crazy everytime. No other boss in any game I've ever played, even other From Software games, have had a boss that hit me as hard as this.
You spend all the game of Bloodborne hearing about one "Ludwig" and how great, important and beloved he was, then suddenly you meet him, and he's the most grotesque abomination you've ever seen (and you've seem plenty of abominations by now). You prepare yourself to put the monster to rest, like a beast, but suddenly the guidance of the Moon shines upon him, and he remembers, and recovers some of his humanity. Suddenly you're not fighting "a beast" anymore, you're fighting LUDWIG, THE HOLY BLADE!
All of this is so masterfully reflected on the boss design, the fight, the sounds, how he stops screaming and stands upright, holding his sword and giving his all like a warrior... And the MUSIC most of all!!! It sends me shivers down the spine, no matter how many times I fight this boss...
    10/10 perfection

There's a trope I've seen in a lot of video game boss fights, including the rest of the 'soulsborne' series. When you battle a person first, but then in 'phase 2', they get stronger by becoming a monster! But Ludwig does it backwards! You battle a monster, but in phase 2, he gets stronger by REGAINING HIS HUMANITY!

I'm SO glad you came around to revisiting this song. Because, as you discovered, it's absolutely phenomenal.
It's always been my favourite track from Bloodborne and is definitely among my top 5 of best FromSoftware music. I particularly loved how you recounted the lyrics and really felt it with phase 2. I love how unrestrained you always are when you listen to this impactful music. How relatable your reaction is. You don't hold back but instead let it carry you from emotion to emotion. You're really good at showing what's going on inside you and how the music affects you as it plays. This has been so far one if your greatest qualities. I can always see the way the music influences your state of being as it happens and this is what I enjoy most in your videos. Needless to say it's particularly noticeable in this one.
Also a huge thanks for pointing out the music's regal quality in phase 1 that I haven't really noticed before. You always keep adding to my experience listening to these soundtracks. Your expertise always manages to expand my horizon and shed some light on facets of the music I previously overlooked, letting me view, or hear, it in a new way. Great stuff.

The transformation from the chaotic and super creepy first part, to the much more easily recognizable melody in the second part describes Ludwig so well. The transition between phase 1 and 2 is still my favorite musical moment FromSoft has ever put out. The sheer discordance and borderline atonal chaos of the first phase, like mindless beasts playing the instruments, and then, you knock some sense into Ludwig and it cuts everything but the most human instrument, voices.
At first, chaotic and discordant as before, but then they find their way back to sanity and order as Ludwig's humanity reasserts control over the beast.
Then, finally, you face the heroic paladin at the head of the Church's Hunters, the legend everyone's talking about, and the strings and brass kick you in the teeth for one final heroic stand. Storytelling through music at its finest.
It's Ludwig's humanity deciding that he's not dying in the streets like a dog, he's going out on his own terms. What a badass.

I love the Latin breakdowns, that adds layers to the song I would have had no idea about without your going over them and it really adds to my love for this song. Not only does it clearly come across as a dance to the death with this disgusting powerful beast, it also sings about his tragic tale right under your nose while a lot of people, myself included may not be able to hear that with not understanding it, so it's like a hidden tragic tale, much like how to find that in the game you'd also have to really look beneath the surface to find that out. Not to mention the high voice kinda makes me think of people wailing in grief at the loss of this holy symbol in Yharnam, a man that was looked up to by the people of the healing church.

  • @TankTaur

Great analysis! I really love this track.
The meeting with Ludwig is an absolute revelation both in the context of the lore and the greater design trends of From Software boss fights, and the music perfectly encapsulates that.
If a first time player follows the lore of Bloodborne, all they've heard about Ludwig the Holy Blade before this point is that he was a legendary church hunter, almost a mythological hero - a Saint, even. But what they encounter here is an Accursed demon, an utter monstrosity. And the start of the track is like straight out of a horror movie, and transitions into an unholy chant.
Almost every boss in Soulsborne starts monstrous, and gets worse in the phase transition. But Ludwig reverses that. The doomed beast remembers who he used to be, and as he grabs his sword (the legendary Moonlight sword that exists in every game) and he reverts somewhat to the knightly figure he used to be. And here the music becomes more heroic, like the final fight between two epic heroes, or perhaps this doomed soul fighting for his own eternal fate.
And when the battle is done, all that remains is his talking head. Here we can choose to lie to him, that his legacy is heroic, not beastly, and we give the doomed soul a little hope in his personal hell.
The music, following the presentation beat for beat really elevates it to one of from softwares best boss fights, and one of the best tragic character meetings.

Alright time for my own rant to add a bit with this amazing comment section:
The way I see the music of bloodborne and especially Ludwig is "two sides of your sanity battling themselves" as the tracks take this massive chivalry mixed with horror vibe, all of them expressing in differently like for example Gascoigne having this moments where it feels the music is physically punching you on every beat, the solemn that irradiated your fight with the First Hunter, the desperation with the blood-starved beast. But with Ludwig is...so increased
You have this honorable hunter who set a mark in the history of hunters, this massive personality trapped in a horrible abomination between horse and man. The instruments try to convey this, it attempts to bring attention to the bright past of the great Ludwig, but they are all out of sync, just barely that they mix in a way that doesn't manage to convey his achievements. Then the moonlight appears, Ludwig remembers who he is and stands proudly as best he can in his warped body
The vocals join in. The vocals **accuse* Ludwig of the monster he has become, tells him that the only thing that exist in his life now is blood, and it will flow *eternally* no remorse for his old self, no redemption for the hunter, just death, killing those who come his way or being killed by the main Hunter. But the music now is clear, his mind has returned to somewhat sanity and the music finally is able to display how powerful the church hunter is. You have the voice of insanity over Ludwig ear tempting him to return to a beast and you have the voice of sanity, his past reminded him who he once was

There's also something to be said that they KNEW how much of a good song it was, that they used it for the trailer for the expansion. I remember hearing the song with the trailer, when it came out, and just being so beyond hyped. And then getting to find out that it was the Phase 2 theme for the first boss, and a major figure in the lore, that we had heard so much about via items and such in the world. Watching him go from slavering beast to regaining himself for one last dance of death against a fellow hunter is something that'll stick with me for many years.

I already watched tons of videos like this, but this is different, the other vids usually just talked about the feelings that a music causes, but you are insane! you analysis everything of the music, and this music that I just thought was just a very good music is in fact an experiene. This is just incredible.

The fact this piece has so much narrative in it and it reflects the vibe and the situation Ludwig is in so well is exceptional. Also the fact this man was able to break it down so well is the cheffs kiss on top of it all. Love videos like this!

my god i NEVER get tired of hearing this track and i wholeheartedly agree that this is the best track and boss fight combo from software have ever made. one of my favourite lore theories regarding ludwig is that he resisted the curse of the beast longer than anyone else, but this meant that when he finally transformed it was far more horrific and disturbing. people speculate that ludwig was riding his horse, doing his usual thing killing beasts, when one beast managed to decapitate his beloved steed. this rage caused ludwig to finally succumb to the curse, but in the process his flesh was fused with that of horse. hence why it seems like he has way too many legs, a disgusting stump, and a terrifying horse/human face.

What I love about From Software games are the level of detail they go into, not just gameplay but lore and how everything compliments everything in that universe, how just listening to the music gives you chills, and how it gives you so much PTSD and anxiety that you hold your shield up or your fingers ready to roll at every turn of the corner, how you are ready for nothing, yet ready for everything at the same time

I was genuinely terrified fighting Ludwig and nearly died a few times and this music just creeps underneath your skin without you even realizing it.
Also I'd kindly ask you to listen to "Holy Saint, Holy Spirit" from Trails of Cold Steel 2 it might be right up your alley

Dancing with the devil is the best description of this music. I absolutely love how Ludwig remembers who he was when he saw the moon blade. Like...the light inside of him becomes back to life. I absolutely love Ludwig.

I swear I will never get tired of this piece. It such a great song, it exudes that immense feeling of disgust and fear at the beginning, then some sort of reawakening as if to remember your purpose and who you are, then the strong heroic trumpets break in and the choir singing with every swing his sword takes whereas before they were lamenting or more so singing about what Ludwig has become. I love this song so damn much.
