A painful but outstanding video. Not because of what happened, but because of how you handled it and your ownership of the incident. This is one of the most important kinds of video's to have on a channel, as they set realistic expectations. Sorry for your losses. May of us have been there, it's painful.
Hi, thank you so much for your kind words ❤️ I guess many of us like myself think it will never happen to them, but just as I get the larger tank and have the stocking level where I want it, BAM. It happens! I've been lucky up to now, but after that massive loss, I'm not going to take any more chances. I'm always going to QT from now onwards. I've always said I would show and share the good, bad, and the Drama !! Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Haha, yes I guess you're right, although in my mind when I set the channel up it was more about leaving the RODI unit on and flooding the floor, or a fish deciding it doesn't like water any more and wants to try it's hand at being amphibious or maybe the skimmer cup overflowing etc etc !! 🤣🤣 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Hello, thank you. Yes, it sure is discouraging and quite upsetting, too. I'm not going to give up, but I can understand people who do, especially when they lose all their fish. I had 5 left, although now down to 3 as one of the yellow wrasse jumped out the QT and I think Piney (Porcupine Puffer) has eaten the cleaner wrasse as I can't find him anywhere now. I'm not surprised as the cleaner wrasse used to piss Piney off, and I had him in the sump for ages. Now being in a 100 litre QT together, he must have finally had enough of him! Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
We’ve have been through identical situation! Also no copper was available to buy! it’s heartbreaking to watch and discouraging, but after so many mistakes the tank is thriving with fish, quarantine all the way, your porcupine looks stunning! All the best!
Hello, sorry to hear you had similar problems, even down to getting copper. OMG, it is heartbreaking, but as you say, quarantine all the way, and I'm going to be keeping some Copper and Prazipro in the cupboard at all times from now on. I'm so pleased your tank is thriving now 😀 I've still got another 40-50 days of fallow in the DT. I may extend the 76-day fallow period to 84 or even 90. Will see. Oh, thank you. He is certainly a character and a chunky monkey at that !! 😆 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
OMG :( soo sorry to hear man. I hope you're feeling better. Not as a nice setup as yours, but just lost a few guys, the blue crayfish was tbe one which i was really sad about. sucks man. Good luck. Glad Pinney survived, he's hella cute.
Hey, thanks mate 😀 Thankfully everything seems to be back on track with new livestock now added, too. Absolute nitemare and heartbreaking going through any losses no matter what the circumstances or livestock is. I'm sorry to hear you've been through it, too 😞 Yeah, Piney is a beast, and I'm also really pleased he pulled through. (Spoiler Alert, LOL) He's going to be getting a bigger tank soon 😀 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Sorry to hear this , not had a marine tank for 20 years but I do remember the only time I ever had any trouble with disease was when I introduced a bristle tooth tang the yellow eye one. Tangs just seem like a ticking time bomb. Can happen to any one just a sad part of the hobby, I got it all to come as I'm starting up again. Godd luck with the restock and build.
Thanks John, oh that's great to hear you're starting back up again. I bet you've noticed quite a difference in some of the equipment from when you had a Marine tank before? Yeah, I think you're right about tangs being a ticking time bomb!! Lol. I'm not sure yet if it's put me off getting anymore tangs as I do love them. Will see. Now I'm going to QT any new fish myself and keep copper and Prazipro in the cupboard at all times, maybe one day I will try again with a couple of tangs. Thank you for your kind words and good luck with your new Marine tank and journey. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
@@ReefDrama Yes mate things have moved on in leaps and bounds, T 5's were the latest thing just emerginging back then, now lights arn't much bigger than my phone and evrything seems so much quieter not like having a dish washer in your living room.
Sorry for your lost. After several incidents, my son only buys his fish from a local place that QTs their stock before they sell them. He also uses a place on line that QTs and trains copper bands to eat pellets/frozen. I'm the variable in the family when I stop at some random Petco or LFS and end up buying something interesting!😅 We have a 35W UV on a Red Sea 425XL(@120total). We started keeping reef meds in the house after the same out of stock nightmare.(reef flux, chemi-clean , cipro, iodine, hydrogen peroxide, copper etc) We're also looking at installing ozone as a part time treatment. Good luck on your rebuild!
Thanks. It's good that he does that. Arr, yes, the impulse buy at the LFS! 😆 What make UV have you got? It's something I'm going to be looking into. Yeah, I'm always going to keep copper in the cupboard from now on along with prazipro or similar. Thank you, and thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Thanks. It's something that I will look into, although as I've said to someone else, the additional 2 points of possible failure are a worry. Also, the potential size of the UV and having a place to put it. I'm definitely going to quarantine any new fish from now on. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Man, that sounds so horrible and heart breaking to go through. Piney is an absolute belter of a fish, hopefully he’s okay! I’m new to reef keeping, currently cycling my very first tank, and watching this has reminded me why it took me years to pull the trigger, I really hope I don’t experience something like this; I really feel for you mate. Chin up, we live and learn. I’m glad I’ve already got a QT set up in place next to my display tank, but like you said… I wouldn’t be QT-ing for nearly 3 months, so would it have even helped?? Do you have an inclination of anything else that changed which might have triggered it?
Hey, thank you. Yeah, it was heartbreaking due to the length of time I had some of those fish. Thanks, Piney is absolutely fine, and he's a great character not only in the tank but on the channel, too!! Welcome to reef keeping by the way 😀 Just take your time with things, and I wish you all the best of luck in the Salty world. You're already off to the best start with having QT from the beginning. I'm pleased to hear you've already sorted a QT, but yeah, I'm still not 100% sure it would've helped in my situation, but QTing going forward anyway. To answer your question, there was nothing prior that was added or different. Just literally added those 3 tangs. Nothing else. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Oh no 😞 I really hope after 76 days (maybe more if the fish are ok in QT) that it doesn't come back. I've only recently brought this tank. I'm glad to hear you started again, though, and didn't fully give up 😀
Maybe it's time to start quarantining before adding fish to the main tank. Sorry to hear your going through this. I've been there. It's tough. Follow the 80 - 20 quarantine method and you will drastically reduce these types of problems. I use an all in one 10 Gallon tank. Works great
Hey Nathan, you're spot on there! Will be quarantining from now on for sure. I was reading about the 80-20 quarantine method only the other day. Thanks mate, appreciate it 😀
Thanks. Will do. No, I'm not going to give up. If I had lost all the fish, then it might have been a different story, but celebrating the good news that some made it through, especially Piney of that, I'm very grateful. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Been there done that, after adding a fish from an LFS without Qt it, didn’t realise at that time that LFS run only therapeutic levels of copper to suppress ich/velvet rather than treat & TMC do they same where I was always made to believe they was QT’d, stripped tank down, left fallow for 105 days , copper Qt the fish over a slow period to start for 4weeks , then parazi, fresh water dipped & returned & touch wood all been good, since then I’ve also done the tank transfer on some wrasse & that seems to have worked too, upgrading soon so the qt tanks will be set back up. Shame we had to learn the hard way being live stock & not just an product sold .
Hey mate, sorry to hear you've been through it, too. At least we've acknowledged our wrongdoings as I suspect there are lots of people who don't and just carry on, not QT'ing. Nice one with the tank Transfer method. I'm not really set up here to try it and will most likely just continue with the copper and prazipro going forward. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Sorry to hear about this. Same thing happened to me. I’m new to saltwater fish, and had my nano tank setup for a few weeks, everything was going well and I finally added my fish that i ordered online. Within 3 days both my clowns died and by the next day the gramma was dead as well. It was Brooklynella, and now im stuck with an empty tank with just inverts for the next month until the parasite is dead. It’s so unfortunate and frustrating
Hi, I'm so sorry to hear you've experienced the same thing. I hope by now you're through the worst of it and have started to restock your nano tank. When the tank is empty, it's a great opportunity to seed the tank with copepods and corals 😀 It's still upsetting to lose a fish, let alone all of them, but keep on reefing, we all learn by our mistakes. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Just purchased a 2nd hand RSR425XL. I ran it a week with freshwater for both leak testing and to kill what ever might have been in there before. Now it's up and running and am looking for more fish. I keep skipping over tangs. I had a sailfin and it got ich in a few days. I was lucky to QT it with another fish. Lucky it was the only fish that died. Now I am very hesitant to get a tang
Hey, yes, I know what you mean. It's knocked my confidence with tangs, too, but I think I will try again. Only this time I will QT 1st. I've also purchased a UV for the DT. I'm sorry to hear you lost your sailfin, too. Good luck with whatever you decide. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
It sucks, but its a lesson a lot of us learn in the hobby. This is why I always QT all fish no matter how healthy they look. For me, every new fish goes through copper, prazipro and deworm at minimum.
It sure does 😞 Yup definitely learnt my lesson and will always QT from now on. What sort of time frame do you do for copper? 14 days? Looks like I can get Prazipro in the UK 😀 So, do you dose that after the copper or during? Thanks for your help, suggestions, and for supporting my channel 😀
@@ReefDrama Copper for 14 days, then Prazipro after. I feed medicated dewormer once the fish are eating good from frozen/pellets/flakes. I do QT for at least 2 months and add to that if something else comes up. Hope it helps!
@@ReefDramaI had a clownfish disease that has killed so many fish that I’m still afraid to use my small 5 gallon reef tank and it’s been over 5 months. I think it was marine velvet.
Had my tank get brooklynella, Lost all my fish but once chromis. Sounds exactly like what happened to me happened to you. I now have a observation tank. I dont dose anything but I watch them for four weeks before adding them to the tank I want them in. Have had no problems since
I've put diseased fish in my tank to rescue them, never used copper since losing a couple of fish using 20 years ago. I just wack the ozone generator up to full and have been lucky to cure quite a few fish over the years. Sorry to hear about your loss though. I know how it feels after losing all mine 5 years ago when the tank split open 200 gallons in the living room 🤦🏻♂️
Hey, I'm glad you've had great success without copper. OMG, 200 Gallons is a shit load, let alone all the sand and livestock. I can't imagine the stress and mess as well as the heartbreak all combined. Thankfully, I managed to get rid of my tank before the glass blew out completely and got them all in the new tank. Still had the heartbreak of losing most of them mind just without the mess. Hope you're still reefing 🙏 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
It is strange that it took 2.5 months for the velvet to surface. it would have happened long before that. Did you add any new fish, or new coral recently prior to the accident?
Hi, yes, it is really strange. Definitely, no other fish were added after the 3 rehomed tangs, and I'm pretty sure there were no corals either. Can't get my head around it, but at least everything is running well now 😀 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Had you added any inverts or corals within a couple of weeks or days of the outbreak? So sorry for your losses. After 10 weeks I really can't imagine they brought it in - the incubation period just isn't that long.
Hi Katherine, after the Tang Gang went in I didn't add any corals or inverts. Piney, my Porcupine Puffer would eat any Snails and crabs etc so can't have them anyway. I know, it makes no sense. The only thing I had was Diatoms that have now turned into what looks like Dinos. Thank you for your kind words and for supporting my channel 😀
I had a similar issue twice where my healthy fish all went down in flames when I added new fish and it seemed to be flukes as once I got the fluke treatment, I saved the last few remaining that were almost done packing their bags for heaven.
I'm glad you were able to save the last remaining ones. I was really surprised my Foxface died as he was pretty big and very well fed. I was hoping his immune system would have helped him last just a bit longer until the copper arrived, but alas, he didn't make it 😞 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
It is a heartbreaking video. Tangs were in there for 2.5months Before you had symptoms of velvet? Did you introduce anything in that time interval? Velvet hits hard! It wouldn't let you have that 2 months at all. Their life cycles are 28 days. This is probably a new velvet strain or something.
Thanks for your kind words 🙏 I know, right, 2.5 months and then BAM! I don't understand it either 😞 After I introduced the Tang Gang, there wasn't anything else after that. Would be typical. I somehow get a new strain of velvet!! Haha Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
@@ReefDrama that's why it's incredibly weird. Velvet incubation period is much shorter than 2.5months. it very virulent I don't think it'd stay on the fish dominantly. It must be something else within the two weeks of the outbreak. I don't think the tang gang was the problem. They might be the canary in the mine.
There are a few businesses that sell quarantined fish. They're pricier, but safe. I bought a pair of clowns and a copper band that way, and no issues. Sorry for your losses, I've been there done that, it's very sad. Good Luck.
Hi, I'm not sure any of my LFS do that, but I usually only buy fish from my favourite LFS, which is Angel Aquatics in Birmingham. It was the Purple Tang that I wanted so much, and all 3 tangs looked so good and not a thing on them for 2.5 months and them BAM!! I'm glad you've had no issues, but boy, are those Copper Band had to feed. Good luck with that. Thanks for your kind words and for supporting my channel 😀
You and me both !! Yeah 2.5months they were in my tank. Went away for 2 nights and BAM! No idea really. If I had quarantined for 30 days and just observed, it still would have happened! Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Hey, yup, from now on, I will always have copper in my cabinet and will always quarantine new fish prior to putting them into the DT. Learnt my lesson the hard way, unfortunately. Totally weird how it took 2.5 months for anything to start showing 😞 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
... mate just seen this vid... we've just been through very very similar ordeal... no real answers but just wanted to say we feel your pain & hang in there buddy 👍
Hey Johnny, thanks, mate. Appreciate the kind words, and sorry to hear you've had similar issues 😞 I'm just so pleased that Piney made it through 😀 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Your story is really sad, but those of us who are involved in this beautiful hobby must face these facts...and don't you all tell me that we haven't faced them over time? I wish all of us that from one point and then everything will be smooth..
Hey Pete, thanks. I'm looking into a UV at the moment. Just so many choices, sizes, and wattage available. Yup, I've learnt my lesson the hard way and will always be QT'ing any new fish from now on. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Im so sorry this happened to u. My heart breaks i am a man and i always feel like crying when i loose a fish its truly sad. Youll come back from this keep your head up brother✌️👍💯🐠🐟🐠🐟🐡
Thanks 😀 was really tough and upsetting, but on this occasion, I only have myself to blame. Definitely will keep on reefing and expanding as well with a new tank for my Porcupine Puffer, but that's an upcoming video 😉🤫 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Thanks Michael, and you're absolutely right. I should never have brought them without QTing but really wanted a purple tang. I've certainly paid the price but I hold my hands up and own it. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Recently i had lost my whole tank due to velvet including 10 baby clowmfish , my 3 years old percula clownfish pairs , one bicolour angel, one coral beauty angel except foxface rabbitfish which i treated with chloquine phosphate Velvet probably came from two new addition either those angels or those baby coownfish batch . I am totally devastated. Fishes are dead after investing so much money in the recent new tank build up and all the euipments. I am more worried about adding new fish. I have installed an oversized Uv. But i do not run follow period. Treating the foxface 1 week with chloquine phosphate its again in display tank. Don't even know if the velvet is still there or not I also misunderstood velvet as ich first . When i realised i didn't even get time to start medicating my 3 years old Clownfish pairs ( they were my first saltwater fishes) ..also here tank temp is very warm around 29-31°C ( 84-89°F).. warmer the temp, faster the velvet proliferation probably) the night i realised i was dealing with velvet probably I thought i would traat those 3 years old clowns after coming home from office..but when i returned those clowns were dead...
Oh brother, yup, I feel your pain 😞 I was devastated when my 9.5 year old clowns died and then to lose the others in such quick succession. This hobby is an expensive one, but it's not even about the money for me, it's losing a pet that you've cared for for so long. My Puffer is like a bloody puppy at times, and I can't imagine how upset I would have been if I had lost him too. The tangs (for the time I had them), Foxface, and Clownfish were especially dear to me, and it was very hard losing them. You are probably doing better than me with that UV. It's something I will have to look into. I think the temperatures your tank is at would mean the fallow period would have been shorter. Fingers crossed, it doesn't come back. I was the same, thought it was Ick and treated for that, but then seemed to turn into Marine Velvet or Brooklynella (still not sure). It all happened so fast as with yourself. If I had been able to get some copper quicker, then I may have saved a few more. The main thing is don't give up, keep going and we learn by our mistakes. Thanks for spending the time writing this comment to me and for supporting my channel 😀
It happens brother, I messed up and added an algae remover into my shrimp tank, it ended up killing everything and kind of made me feel like complete crap for a while
Awww, man, that's tough. Definitely makes it worse when you know it was your fault. Hopefully, you've managed to overcome it and restocked your shrimp tank 😀 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Sorry to hear about your fish. I just went through velvet and bacteria infection. Lost 9 fish. White spot will never be in your tank if you don't introduce it. Fish should always be quarantined for at least 45 days in a bare bottom tank before going to your display tank.
Thanks man, and sorry to hear you've been through it too 😞 Yeah, I learnt my lesson and will from now on QT all fish coming into the DT. You think 45? I thought the standard was 30? Yes, my QT is bare bottom apart from a small tub of sand due to the Yellow Wrasse. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
@@ReefDrama 6 weeks is best. The lifecycle of white spot is actually if I remember correctly 72 days if you have sand and fish. 45 days or 6 weeks is best protocol with bare bottom because of the lifecycle without sand is about a month but if white spot or Velvet is in the filter media, it can hatch there. So 45 days is best, but 72 days is guarantee.
Man sorry to hear that. I had something like that last year. It killed all my fish in 3 days. I had 8 fish. I’m back up to 9 fish I’m extremely nervous about adding anything. I’m buying my fish from a local shop that qt all there fish.
Hi, thanks 😊 Sorry to hear you lost all yours. It happens so quickly, doesn't it 😞 That's great you've reestablished, but yeah, I know what you mean. Gonna be scary enough when I add my saved fish back into the DT, let alone any new ones in the future. I will be QT'ing from now on, that's great you can get qt fish from your lfs. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Sorry to hear your troubles. It's not an easy thing to go through, unfortunately, but at least we learn by our mistakes, and I, for one, will always quarantine new / rehomed fish from now on. Good luck buddy, fingers are crossed for you. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Sorry to hear this. unfortunatley, We've all been there and we learn from it. but can i advise you of this , should you ever find yourself in this position again... You stated that " there was no point taking the fish out and placing them into the QT as you didn't have copper at this point" i understand as you stated, that you are not a disease expert or to that effect but, Never forget fresh water dips with temp and SG to match your Dt and getting them away from the source where the disease is rampant and into your QT. This not only buys you time to treat , but also could save you more fish deaths. Again, I know how heartbreaking this is. Keep reefing my friend.😊
Hi Sharon, Thank you so much for your kind words and for the advice. Yes, you're right, I probably should have put the fish through a freshwater dip and then into the unmedicated QT. Was just so frustrating not being able to get hold of the Copper. Won't be making that mistake again!! As you say a lot of reef keepers have had the same unfortunate issues, and we learn by them. Was absolutely gutted to lose the Purple Tang, considering that was really the only Tang I wanted and only got the other 2 because they were all together in the previous owners tank. I will indeed keep reefing, and hopefully, you will see on future videos the fish back in the tank that survived, plus some new ones. Obviously, the new ones will be going through a QT procedure 😀 Thank you for supporting my channel 😀
Oh no 😞 I know how you feel. Nitemare, isn't it! Yup, quarantine is the only way forward, and we all learn by our mistakes. Onwards and upwards! Hope you have managed to restock, and the problem is behind you 😀 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Hey Dan, it's definitely something I will look into, although the additional connections are a worry as it's another 2 points of failure. If I could get a submerged in sump UV, that's the right wattage for my tank, then definitely. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
All models can be, I think. It is only the top where the electrical connection is that needs to be kept dry. I've run mine for 10 months now - no problems - I started for water clarity and have just kept it going. Have a look at D & D site - it explains the technical side of things, although it was recommended by my LFS
@gavingrafton680 awesome. I guess that makes sense. When I had my 55w UV on my Koi pond, it was horizontal, but being outside wasn't the end of the world if it leaked. Thanks, mate. I'll have a look 😀
Totally guessing as i know nothing about yer tank.I would say some how the fish were stressed too much.Adding three big tangs at once perhaps was to much of a bioload on the system and either ammonia or nitrates went too high.80 ppm nitrate in my experience fish start to get sick.Tangs are big just think how many gobys it would take to equal the weight and size of one tang then times that by 3. Then theirs the diet tangs must have herbivore food or they will become ill over time. Any time i know im gona be gone a while i will feed my fish extra or more often for a few days before i leave to get them fat and strong.I also like to keep some of my favorite meds on hand. Removing a ill fish a placing in a small hospital tank quadruple the stress level of a fish ,so if more than 1 fish is sick it my be wiser too remove corals if its only a few or just use a somewhat reef safe medication.
That's very good points. It could have been too much adding them together, although the tank was stable and had been running a long time beforehand. I think their diet was fine and definitely wasn't lacking in anything as they all get bits of mussel and cockles from feeding Piney. Probably won't ever fully know the real reason, but one thing is for sure, I will always quarantine now. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for supporting my channel 😀
Thanks. I'll have a watch. I did Copper on my last QT, which worked out great, so I will probably do the same kinda thing. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀 Merry Xmas 🎉🎊
Hi, thanks. I'm glad you managed to save a clownfish, and it had a full recovery 😀 I'm just really pleased, Piney, my puffer fish survived 😀 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
this what a lot of reefer when thru parasite you have to put your tank downtime atleast 3mths so sorry for your loss dont take the change fresh water dip low salinity paraguard it works
Thanks. Yeah, they were covered, so defo not ick. It's my own fault for not quaranting, but I won't make that mistake again! I'm definitely not giving up and will soon be upgrading my Puffer to an even bigger tank 😀 Video spoiler alert!!! 😆 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Thanks, yes, I'm looking into a UV. Do you run the UV continuously or for a certain amount of time each day? It's the 2 extra points of failure that worries me. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
I had a wipeout in my 180. Literally the last fish out of medicated qt spread a mystery disease that killed one fish a day until they all died. Fyi you didn't have brook. It's not treated with copper. I use chloroquine phosphate because it treats all 3. There is a great tank on the other side of this. I know because I did. One more thing, if you have a fish doing bad in qt don't talk yourself into the idea that it's stressed and would do better in the display. That's what killed all my fish, not the disease. I killed them.
Hey Gary, sorry to hear you've had a wipeout in the past, too. What awful luck with that last fish 😞 Sounds virtually the same situation as mine with them passing each day. It's good to know about it not being brook. At least I can rule that one out. I will look into the CP you mentioned. Yeah, I can't wait to release the surviving few back into the 625xl and then start stocking up the QT with the new ones 😀 Thanks for the advice about a stressed fish in the QT. I'm going to be very vigilant from now on. Well, fingers crossed 🤞 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Long story short, take it from a man that’s been through what’s happened to you and more, diligence, attention to detail and precaution is the only way forward, you would be right when you say fish do not always outwardly show signs of disease or parasites, most tangs in my experience carry white spot think the full story of white is I think still unknown, I did as you were suggesting and put my new tang arrivals into a qt tank and just observed, this is the first step of my procedure, I settle them down after tank transfer and travel for a minimum of 2 weeks before going to the next step, in this period most tangs I break out in white spot through stress, I treat new fish with white spot straight away in qt, with plenty of aeration and begin the process of reaching 0.5 with cupramine over 7 days the 24/48 jump from 0.25 to 0.5 is too fast and tends to stress the fish, I make it clear that EVERY fish that I receive gets copper treatment for 14 days at 0.5 then gets a further 2 weeks observation following this, let’s not rule out that you may have had white spot in your tank previously before the tangs were introduced, your fish are hardy to it but new stressed arrivals would have been easy pickings, you’ll need to run your tank fallow for 72 days and treat all the other fish
Yeah, I'm sure white spot probably was already in the tank, but as you say, the other fish were already hardy to it. Still, 2.5 months in the tank is quite a long time for no signs of disease or parasites showing, and then suddenly, the Sailfin is covered. I guess this is the unfortunate issues of having a Marine tank and occasionally working away and leaving it for a couple of days. Thanks for sharing your QT procedure, and yes, I'm leaving my DT fallow for at least 76 days, maybe more. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
I know !! Manifested this all by myself, didn't I !! 🤣 Thought I was being clever with the channel name as we all have reefing dramas, but this one was huge !! 😞 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
I’ve always felt that lots of reef hobbyists overstock their tanks with fish. Not from a biological perspective necessarily, but just from an aesthetic perspective. This becomes really risky if the hobbyist in question does not have a really strict quarantine process in place, because each fish added is a roll of the dice which can kill every other fish in there.
Hi, you're absolutely right about the roll of the dice. I, for one, will no longer be playing the non QT roulette!! I think I had, as you say, the aesthetic quantity right in my tank for movement and colours, however Piney my Porcupine Puffer, has always been set for a tank upgrade as he gets bigger. In the future, I'm hoping to achieve this, and if not, then sadly, I will have to look to rehome him. That Orange Tang I have left will also get quite big. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
I’m so terribly sorry that you had to go through this. Absolutely Heartbreaking 💔😔🥺 This is everyone’s very worst fear. I hope that you can rebuild and recover from this 🙏🏼 Try keep your head up… thanks so much for sharing your story. It will help someone and that’s all that we can do…
Hi Nicole, Thank you so much for your kind words. It was totally heartbreaking and slightly baffling, too, at the same time! I have definitely learnt my lesson and will not be playing the non QT roulette anymore!! I will definitely rebuild and recover, and hopefully, in future videos, you will see the fish back in the tank that survived and the new QT'd fish that I choose as well 😀 Thank you. Yes, I do hope this does help people and prevent the same heartbreaking loss for others. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Hey mate, yeah, I know what you mean. I did have the cleaner wrasse in the sump mind as he used to piss off Piney the puffer. Can't remember when I put the cleaner wrasse in the sump, but I'm pretty sure it was before the 3 Tangs were introduced. The question is after the fallow period, do I sump the cleaner wrasse or not. They seem to be getting along now in the QT tank. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Hey, yeah your right. I haven't got a UV steriliser. I'm looking into it now. Do you mean by going overboard getting one suited for a 1000 litre tank when mine is 600 litres? Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
@@ReefDrama Yes, I would get a UV sterilizer that's a little bigger than recommended for your tank. I would buy the Pentair Aquatics brand. They are the BEST!
Unfortunately, it was all I had in the cupboard at the time and obviously took too long getting the copper. Going to keep some copper on hand from now on, though. Not sure hyposalinity is effective against marine velvet.
Follow humblefish, he's the foremost expert in fish disease. I followed his quarantine steps when my blue tang got ich. For best results set up your quarantine tank with a hang on back filter full of biomedia from your DT, like bioballs live rock or matrix. Be sure to have a seachem ammonia alert in the tank in case your biomedia cant handle all of the ammonia you can add some Prime or do a water change. Fish can go straight into 2.0 ppm copper power on the first day. The next day raise it to 2.5 which is the therapeutic level. That will be day one of a month in copper at 2.5. After the month do 100 percent water change and observe for 2 more weeks. During this 6 weeks the tank has been fallow. Make sure to raise the temp to 80.6 or a bit higher as this will make the parasite life cycle complete faster. After 6 weeks, since your DT and quarantine are the same temp just move the fish back to the DT. It works like a charm and if you did it soon enough all will survive. From there on out no fish goes into DT untill a 6 week quarantine. Make sure to have a complete set of tools, fish net, siphon, etc for your quarantine and NEVER cross utilize. One last note is to make sure DT and Qaurantine are at least 10 feet apart.
Thanks for the recommendation, I did actually watch his quarantine procedure and did exactly what you said, HOB filter with Seachem Matrix from the DT, Seachem Ammonia Alert, etc. I have all separate accessories for the QT to include net, heater, HOB filter, glass cleaner, towel, water change hose, etc. The only thing I couldn't do was have the 10ft between DT and QT. I also couldn't have the copper at 2.0ppm when the fish went in because of the Porcupine Puffer which is why I slowly increased it over maybe 5 or 6 days and once at therapeutic level then start the 30 days. I think the main problem for me was not being able to get hold of the copper as quickly as I would have liked, so I will keep some in the cabinet from now on. Thanks for your great comment, and thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Hey, no worries. Yeah, if it wasn't for Piney, I could have gotten the tank straight up to the therapeutic level and put them straight in. Also, that's another reason for using Copper Power as it's not so harsh, especially on the puffer 😀
@poltavasae OK, thanks. I will look into the product in more detail. The first advert was saying it was for enhancing growth rates of sponges and gastropods. Now I've found a write-up saying it's a non-chelated copper solution. Thank you. How long do you recommend any new fish in the QT be in this solution for?
You have been manifesting this with the channel name alone :D
Haha, yes I guess you're right, although in my mind when I set the channel up it was more about leaving the RODI unit on and flooding the floor, or a fish deciding it doesn't like water any more and wants to try it's hand at being amphibious or maybe the skimmer cup overflowing etc etc !! 🤣🤣
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
So sorry to hear about this. It can be very discouraging after something like this, but don't give up.
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
OMG :( soo sorry to hear man. I hope you're feeling better. Not as a nice setup as yours, but just lost a few guys, the blue crayfish was tbe one which i was really sad about. sucks man. Good luck. Glad Pinney survived, he's hella cute.
Hey, thanks mate 😀 Thankfully everything seems to be back on track with new livestock now added, too. Absolute nitemare and heartbreaking going through any losses no matter what the circumstances or livestock is. I'm sorry to hear you've been through it, too 😞
Yeah, Piney is a beast, and I'm also really pleased he pulled through. (Spoiler Alert, LOL) He's going to be getting a bigger tank soon 😀
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
@@ReefDrama Of course! Subscribed and looking forward to your new posts!
Sorry to hear that. Are you considering a UV before adding any more fish?
I literally started the same time as you iv had a good 7 months until yesterday all 4 of my fish died 😂
Sorry to hear that, I lost a full tank to velvet a couple years ago. Thought I beat it, but it came back a week later and wiped out everything.
Oh god, really. Sorry to hear you lost all your fish. How long did you leave the main display fallow for?
@@ReefDrama I ended up taking that tank down and restarting
Thanks mate, appreciate it 😀
Sorry to hear that. Take a break. Slow down. But don’t give up.
Thanks.
Sorry for your loss. Pretty hard stuff.
Thanks. It's always hard to lose a fish, especially the ones you've had for over 9 years.
Thank you for supporting my channel 😀
Sorry to hear about this. Same thing happened to me. I’m new to saltwater fish, and had my nano tank setup for a few weeks, everything was going well and I finally added my fish that i ordered online. Within 3 days both my clowns died and by the next day the gramma was dead as well. It was Brooklynella, and now im stuck with an empty tank with just inverts for the next month until the parasite is dead. It’s so unfortunate and frustrating
Hi, I'm so sorry to hear you've experienced the same thing. I hope by now you're through the worst of it and have started to restock your nano tank. When the tank is empty, it's a great opportunity to seed the tank with copepods and corals 😀
It's still upsetting to lose a fish, let alone all of them, but keep on reefing, we all learn by our mistakes.
@PurelyAquatic hey, thanks. Sounds like a good QT procedure. Thank you for letting me know 😀
@@ReefDramaI had a clownfish disease that has killed so many fish that I’m still afraid to use my small 5 gallon reef tank and it’s been over 5 months. I think it was marine velvet.
Had my tank get brooklynella, Lost all my fish but once chromis. Sounds exactly like what happened to me happened to you. I now have a observation tank. I dont dose anything but I watch them for four weeks before adding them to the tank I want them in. Have had no problems since
Hey, sorry to hear you went through it, too. Glad your qt process is working for you. Keep on reefing 😊 Thanks for supporting my channel 😀

Sorry to hear this bro
Thanks 😀 Was hard at the time, but you learn by your mistakes! Onwards and upwards now 😃

Hope you're still reefing 🙏
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
It is strange that it took 2.5 months for the velvet to surface. it would have happened long before that. Did you add any new fish, or new coral recently prior to the accident?
Hi, yes, it is really strange. Definitely, no other fish were added after the 3 rehomed tangs, and I'm pretty sure there were no corals either.
Can't get my head around it, but at least everything is running well now 😀
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Had you added any inverts or corals within a couple of weeks or days of the outbreak? So sorry for your losses. After 10 weeks I really can't imagine they brought it in - the incubation period just isn't that long.
P.s it wouldn't be the corals or inverts themselves but it could possibly be the tank water they came in.
Thanks, I never transfer any LFS water into my tank anyway, but I know what you mean ❤️
Did you have a UV running????
No, but I do now 😀
I had a similar issue twice where my healthy fish all went down in flames when I added new fish and it seemed to be flukes as once I got the fluke treatment, I saved the last few remaining that were almost done packing their bags for heaven.
I'm glad you were able to save the last remaining ones. I was really surprised my Foxface died as he was pretty big and very well fed. I was hoping his immune system would have helped him last just a bit longer until the copper arrived, but alas, he didn't make it 😞
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Tank Transfer Method for QT is king.
Thanks for your kind words 🙏
I know, right, 2.5 months and then BAM! I don't understand it either 😞
After I introduced the Tang Gang, there wasn't anything else after that.
Would be typical. I somehow get a new strain of velvet!! Haha
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
@@ReefDrama that's why it's incredibly weird. Velvet incubation period is much shorter than 2.5months. it very virulent I don't think it'd stay on the fish dominantly. It must be something else within the two weeks of the outbreak. I don't think the tang gang was the problem. They might be the canary in the mine.
Yeah, it's very weird. Really don't know what happened, but copper seems to have saved the rest. I just hope it doesn't come back!
I'm confused. How do you get velvet 3 1/2 months later?
You and me both !! Yeah 2.5months they were in my tank. Went away for 2 nights and BAM! No idea really. If I had quarantined for 30 days and just observed, it still would have happened!
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Keep copper on hand !!! Always. Also you should of copper treated them before introducing them. But it’s weird how it happened couple months later..
Hey, yup, from now on, I will always have copper in my cabinet and will always quarantine new fish prior to putting them into the DT. Learnt my lesson the hard way, unfortunately.
Totally weird how it took 2.5 months for anything to start showing 😞
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Reefplus as a bit of copper in it. It may be too little to help.
Thanks. Will look into that although some chemicals you can't get in the UK.

A UV Sterilizer works great oversize the unit for a heavy outbreak. New fish never in your display
Hey Pete, thanks. I'm looking into a UV at the moment. Just so many choices, sizes, and wattage available. Yup, I've learnt my lesson the hard way and will always be QT'ing any new fish from now on.

Sorry to hear this. But i would never buy tangs from another reefer. Then especially not without a proper QT period
Thanks Michael, and you're absolutely right. I should never have brought them without QTing but really wanted a purple tang. I've certainly paid the price but I hold my hands up and own it.

Strength to you! ❤
Thank you so much 😀
Recently i had lost my whole tank due to velvet including 10 baby clowmfish , my 3 years old percula clownfish pairs , one bicolour angel, one coral beauty angel except foxface rabbitfish which i treated with chloquine phosphate
Velvet probably came from two new addition either those angels or those baby coownfish batch .
I am totally devastated. Fishes are dead after investing so much money in the recent new tank build up and all the euipments. I am more worried about adding new fish. I have installed an oversized Uv. But i do not run follow period. Treating the foxface 1 week with chloquine phosphate its again in display tank. Don't even know if the velvet is still there or not
I also misunderstood velvet as ich first . When i realised i didn't even get time to start medicating my 3 years old Clownfish pairs ( they were my first saltwater fishes) ..also here tank temp is very warm around 29-31°C ( 84-89°F).. warmer the temp, faster the velvet proliferation probably) the night i realised i was dealing with velvet probably
I thought i would traat those 3 years old clowns after coming home from office..but when i returned those clowns were dead...
Hopefully, you've managed to overcome it and restocked your shrimp tank 😀
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Sorry to hear about your fish. I just went through velvet and bacteria infection. Lost 9 fish. White spot will never be in your tank if you don't introduce it. Fish should always be quarantined for at least 45 days in a bare bottom tank before going to your display tank.
Thanks man, and sorry to hear you've been through it too 😞
Yeah, I learnt my lesson and will from now on QT all fish coming into the DT.
Im basically going through the same thing now 😪 i didn't quarantine and ive lost 6 Vanderbilt chromis a clown and a lawnmower blenny in 2 days
According to HF’s forum, a H2O2 bath can improve the condition of a fish infected by amyloodinium. I’d check the topic on hydrogen peroxide there.
Cheers buddy, thanks for the info and for supporting my channel 😀
Obviously, the new ones will be going through a QT procedure 😀
Thank you for supporting my channel 😀
same thing happened to my display tank now i quarantine all fish
Oh no 😞 I know how you feel. Nitemare, isn't it! Yup, quarantine is the only way forward, and we all learn by our mistakes. Onwards and upwards! Hope you have managed to restock, and the problem is behind you 😀

could run UV to help manage it if the worst ever were to happen again
Hey Dan, it's definitely something I will look into, although the additional connections are a worry as it's another 2 points of failure. If I could get a submerged in sump UV, that's the right wattage for my tank, then definitely.
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Look into D & D UV's. I run mine half submerged in the sump. Sorry to see this posting - keep your chin up.
Hi, thank you 😀 I will do.
What model D&D do you have that can be half submerged? Sounds like what I need 😀
What a nightmare , I’m so sorry
Hi, thank you. It certainly was a nitemare. Stressful and upsetting at the same time 😞
Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I'm sorry to hear that 😞 What a fantastic age! Hope you restocked and continued with the hobby?
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
BRStv has a good video with Elliot Lim from Marine Collectors that provides an excellent quarantine schedule...
Thanks. I'll have a watch. I did Copper on my last QT, which worked out great, so I will probably do the same kinda thing. Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Merry Xmas 🎉🎊
Omg really bro I'm so sorry u lost your fish I saved one clownfish and my fish recovered thank God I just needed more time with them dude
Hi, thanks. I'm glad you managed to save a clownfish, and it had a full recovery 😀 I'm just really pleased, Piney, my puffer fish survived 😀
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
@ReefDrama Here's my secret my good friend the speed force is always right
@ReefDrama I just lost two cheap fish my friend not to expensive to start with now I know next time to have more time with them its like a dog
this what a lot of reefer when thru parasite you have to put your tank downtime atleast 3mths so sorry for your loss dont take the change fresh water dip low salinity paraguard it works
Thanks. Yes, it was very upsetting, and what made it worse was it was my own fault! I'll look into that. Cheers.
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
definitely velvet , if you can count the spots its ick , if its more abundant than its velvet. sorry about this mate just dont give up!
Thanks. Yeah, they were covered, so defo not ick. It's my own fault for not quaranting, but I won't make that mistake again! I'm definitely not giving up and will soon be upgrading my Puffer to an even bigger tank 😀
Video spoiler alert!!! 😆

Sorry dude thats rough. UV is the way to go in my opinon. I wont run a tank without one.
Thanks, yes, I'm looking into a UV. Do you run the UV continuously or for a certain amount of time each day? It's the 2 extra points of failure that worries me.

Yeah, I can't wait to release the surviving few back into the 625xl and then start stocking up the QT with the new ones 😀
Thanks for the advice about a stressed fish in the QT. I'm going to be very vigilant from now on. Well, fingers crossed 🤞

Def not a brilliant situation indeed mate sorry bout your fish...
Thanks mate, appreciate that and for supporting my channel 😀
Reef drama😂
I know !! Manifested this all by myself, didn't I !! 🤣 Thought I was being clever with the channel name as we all have reefing dramas, but this one was huge !! 😞
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
I will definitely rebuild and recover, and hopefully, in future videos, you will see the fish back in the tank that survived and the new QT'd fish that I choose as well 😀
Thank you. Yes, I do hope this does help people and prevent the same heartbreaking loss for others.
Thanks for supporting my channel 😀
Sorry RIP
Thank you 😊
Cleaner wrasse don't help none worst fish in my opinion they non stop bug the other fish even if clean

Sounds like you lack a UV sterilizer. I wouldn’t buy anymore fish until i got one. Oh, and go overboard with it.
Ok, thanks for the recommendation 😀
Polylab medic is garbage. Should have pulled all fish and do hyposalinity
@@ReefDrama yep I didn't think about the puffer, you have to go gentle with them. Thanks for sharing your experiences
Hey, no worries. Yeah, if it wasn't for Piney, I could have gotten the tank straight up to the therapeutic level and put them straight in. Also, that's another reason for using Copper Power as it's not so harsh, especially on the puffer 😀
brightwellaquatics "Cuprion"
Hi, what's the reason you're recommending this product?
Extensive experience in treating fish after purchase
@poltavasae OK, thanks. I will look into the product in more detail. The first advert was saying it was for enhancing growth rates of sponges and gastropods. Now I've found a write-up saying it's a non-chelated copper solution.
Thank you. How long do you recommend any new fish in the QT be in this solution for?
