Coppola With Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and Brian De Palma use to be Hollywood Renegates in the 70s, for how much their ideas were agaist the hollywood structure. And while Scorsese is still doing strong (even though he barelly gets an award), Spielberg and De Palma still working but not doing that great like they use to be, Lucas and Coppola suffer a severe creative stroke in wich they became too overshadow by their own sucesses (star wars and the godfather) as well as them beeing too obsess with their ambitious ideas (the prequels and apocalipse now) that they barelly find work anymore.
I caught the last screening of it at Cannes and I'm so glad I did because I don't know when this will get distributed. Hopefully this year so more people can see it.
What did you think of it was Shia LaBouf in it a lot and is he insane also is Jon Voight in it a lot I read an early draft of the script and they were the most interesting characters do they both have a lot of screen time?
I have not seen it but it sounds like your boss's drug addicted favourite son who is always in and out of rehab but also happens to be an artistic genius that paints masterpieces between benders. Like you said... special.
I feel like this is a movie that will reward you for obsessing over patterns. There were so many design patterns that I almost picked up on when watching for the first time like the language switches, small scene inserts and symbolisms that were shown for such a short time span that you can't really quite figure it out. It's a movie for the few obsessed cinema lovers and I am looking forward to the niche analysis videos
I accepted a lot of the stupid/weird stuff in the movie, but honestly I don’t even get the most basic arc in terms of story and characters. What did Caesar do differently at the end that he could suddenly somehow realise Megalopolis? How did he change as a character? What did the time-stopping ability even do for the story or is it just a metaphor? Almost everything that happens in the film, from the satellites crashing down to Caesar getting shot just feel completely inconsequential. And if the message of the movie is simply “Just blindly let the genius artist do what he intuitively JUST KNOWS how to do”, the movie itself does a bad job at argumenting itself.
Given all of the controversies surrounding this (the casting of Shia LaBeouf who is a literal monster, and Coppola kissing extras behind the scenes), the fact that Coppola hasn't made a watchable film in decades, and the recent proof that's come to light about Coppola boosting the career of Victor Salva, a literal child r*pist, this video will be the most I ever see of this movie.
It beats all the superhero reboots, average film remakes, mindless summer blockbusters and stupid horror films. I'm open to something unusual or different.
That’s the lowest bar to set for cinema lol but yea American cinema is dead apart from a few directors. Streaming just made the 30-40million budget films that most classic films were around unlikely to be made cuz the brain rot masses only leave their houses for spectacle movies now
@@KamPatterson69I would say that that’s true but not necessarily just because of “brain rot” movies are expensive and people are depressed and stressed it makes sense that people would go for a spectacle if they can only afford to go ever so often.

What a career and life, to already be one of the founders of the Hollywood new wave and have made a few of the greatest cinema works ever, only to then spend a fortune of your own money to see your own artistic vision come to fruition. Everything I’m hearing about this movie makes it sound like a return to postmodern filmmaking with unclear themes and I think 2020 audiences are gonna hate it.
@@t.7124 Agree this has "reviewers trashing it now will pretend when they love when it becomes fashionable as a cult class in 10+ years" written all over it.
I actually really enjoyed this film, tbh I honestly could not understand why it got so much hate when I was watching it. I felt like it was fairly coherant in what it was trying to say about humanity and our societies.
I honestly admire filmmakers like Coppola who make the films they want to make, not because of their profitability or award potential, but because they just have a story they want to tell. That's a true artist. I also know that only filmmakers who are making small low budget indie film, or incredibly successful directors with clout and money can, or even want to do this. That's one of the reasons I champion all the new technology that is making the tools of the craft available to anyone no matter how much the hacks and industry shills whine about their "jobs". Pretty much everybody does have a story to tell, but until very recently not everybody had the means to tell it.
I like visually great movies ("The Fall" is one of my favourites), and i don't care if the story doesn't make sense. Would i like it? I mean every image I see of this looks just absolutely stunning to me... How is the soundtrack? It's never mentioned in any review, but it's also always important to me. I don't mind if the music takes control sometimes...
I know this movie will probably be a mess, but just the visuals alone from trailers and all made me wanna see it, it's somewhat alike Copolla's Dracula, whenever I rewatch that it's mostly because of the weird and somehow stunning images, and hopefully this one has that too, at least from what I've seen so far gives me that spectacle vibe, definitely smoking a big freaking J before watching that hahaha
Just watched a few days ago. Your review sums it up pretty well. One of those movies I don't know if I hated or loved, just a fascinating object to assist, like diving into the creative mind of someone , with the logical thread comparable only to a fever dream. Very special
I havent seen this movie but I think it was probably unfortunate that it came out the same weekend as Wild Robot. This movie, Megalopolis seems fascinating and I am definitely going to see it. Wild robot on the other hand (which I havent seen) looks gorgeous. That is hard to beat.
I just watched it last night. There were a lot of things I liked about the movie but I was still disappointed overall. I wanted it to be a timeless classic but I thought it was only slightly better than mediocre
He picked the wrong time to finally make this film - box office is at an all time low. Shame, looks interesting I will check it out. Even if it is as the reviews say, refreshing to see passion projects at this time.
I mean it's not like there was ever going to be a sequel and Coppola has basically stated he doesn't care if it's financially successful. He's still mega rich, but yeah it'll tank at the box office - like most things right now.
@@AndySomething He had to sell something - a home i think - it shows he isnt mega rich. a mega rich person pulls money easily, these are people with generational wealth. current rich people are rich in terms of shares, turning that into actual money isnt easy
i'm interested in how megalopolis adapts the historical event of the catiline conspiracy,,, obvs it's meant to be a loose adaptation but I can't get over the fact that in this catiline gets with cicero's daughter
Just saw this movie, and while I was confused on where the plot was going, it made sure to be entertaining all the way through. It had my curiosity and attention, and while I couldn't really explain the movie well to anyone, I do know that the enjoyment was there from start to finish.
I wonder if you could compare it to Cosmopolis. It had a simmilar trait in that the dialog was not how normal people speak, rather it was a collection of bizzare phrases and quotes
i was also able to see the movie basically only because my friend is a critic for a media site and the best way i can describe the movie is it is a giant mind fuck like and to me has a lot of meaning considering the political and social climate today I can't even really say if its good or bad yet atleast its definitely something you need to sit with for a while since like Karsten said no questions are really answered its very open ended
I'm a big fan of Richard Kelley's sci-fi movie Southland Tales, with Dwayne Johnson. Is the movie a mess? Yeah, it is. Does it have some bad performances in it? Sure...particularly from The Rock. Do I love it anyway? Hell, yeah. It's got so many great ideas, is so determined to be one-of-a-kind, and reaches so high in the sky that I forgive its schizophrenic tendencies (particularly with the FAR superior Cannes Cut). That's kind of the sort of film I'm hoping for with Megalopolis.
I LOVE your take! That's pretty much how I felt about it. I enjoyed it quite a bit when I saw it in the cinema, a lot more than I thought I would after seeing all the hate and the memes. Its messy, very clumsy at times, but the fact that it exists in all its madness made me happy. I also agree with you in that it is neither a "good" or "bad" movie lol. It's a lot of things and a huge spectacle
I'm actually excited to watch this, I expect it to be whatever it is lol. Love Rumble Fish and other "not good" Coppola movies. IDK, I kinda get it, but also I still enjoy them....
9:15 - How did it break down Caesar into what you say? I feel like the film completely fumbled his character in the third act. No statement or lesson from him at all.
I watched the movie today and then started looking for reviews to understand the hate. You review nailed exactly what I was thinking about it. It's actually not bad and people are blowing the hate out of proportions unjustifiably. Although it's not perfect or even great but it's certainly worth watching. It's a different kind of movie experience and I ended up giving it a 7/10.
I found the one other person alive who likes this movie. When I finished watching it I was so confused, not at the film but at the audiences. Why for the love of god where peoole so harsh on this film? Is it a masterpiece? No certainly not, but was it without any kind of merit or redeeming qualities? God no, this movie has so much passion put into it and a very clear message in my opinion. Flawed yes, but ambitious and confident enough to speak its message in spite of its flaws. Its like a really good story teller who is dyslexic and cannot spell for his life.
I saw this movie today. The thing that redeemed the experience was delighting in the confused reactions telling my friends about it. Every ten minutes I remember a wild thing that happened in this movie I had forgotten about because the movie itself glosses over it minutes later. Watching this video made me go “oh yeah there was a Russian satellite that crashed and destroyed part of the city… you’d think the movie would have treated that as a bigger deal”
Just saw FFC introduce the film at the BFI IMAX - he definitely sees the flaws IMHO - and his introduction echoed your comments well. Basically pushing the potential of humankind, as part of his own ideology. You nailed it. Thanks. Good review.
"Don't come away with a clear idea of what happened" That sounds like a great thing. Why do I need to be beat over the head with a message. The ambiguity is what is missing from most films. Coppolla has never been for the small minded.
Shocked you talked about everyone in the cast.....but LEFT OUT Dustin Hoffman??? That's what I want to know about more than anything! Coppola and Hoffman, together at last! Even if it sucks, I'm interested, that's the number one attraction for me to see it!

Damn that's actually a great breakdown
are you saying apocalypse now was a failure? i'm confused.
@@worrywirt it wasn't a failure but it was a literal hell to shoot it over 7 years that cause coppola several metal breakdowns

James Cameron is the most exceptional of them all!
Desperately need for this to get distributed in the US! Hate that it hasnt gotten that yet. This is not a movie i want to watch at home.
And you technically cannot watch from home😶
I caught the last screening of it at Cannes and I'm so glad I did because I don't know when this will get distributed. Hopefully this year so more people can see it.
What did you think of it was Shia LaBouf in it a lot and is he insane also is Jon Voight in it a lot I read an early draft of the script and they were the most interesting characters do they both have a lot of screen time?

Babylon 2024. All for it

The comparison definitely came to mind and that's not a bad thing
The film did remind me of Babylon.
This movie feels like if Caden had actually gotten his play done at the end of his life

A great movie! Hopefully Megalopolis is just misunderstood and not a steaming turd!
Saw it tonight at tiff . This review 100% nailed how I felt when I left the theatre
This movie has strong "Southland Tales" vibes.
I love that movie, I still have the dvd
Mother of God....
Southland Tales is such a glorious train wreck. I think this is an apt comparison.
Bullshits.
@@thomascuriel7611such a coherent argument

I liked Beau Is Afraid… I will admit it’s a confusing movie but I loved the performances and scenes. I hope Megalopolis is at least similar
Agreed. I'm not going to say it was a good film, but I enjoyed the hell out of it and I would take it any day over a stupid superhero or remake
@@KamPatterson69
Absolutely not it was trash
Watching this video is like watching that key and Peele MasterChef skit , what are you trying to say my dude
I think Cloud Atlas would still be the most expensive independent film of all time by a few million dollars.
And it's so wonderful!
i just watched it this morning at the flix and spent the entire time thinking "What is the point". Visually impressive and good performances but the film is SO so dull
What a career and life, to already be one of the founders of the Hollywood new wave and have made a few of the greatest cinema works ever, only to then spend a fortune of your own money to see your own artistic vision come to fruition. Hes right, hes earned the right to die satisfied. Im envious but happy for the man.
your description of the actors, how they play the characters, and why they feel disjointed together was PERFECT ❤
i enjoyed annette so i'm interested to see this, you're right that it seems like a once in a life time sort of film with the hype and stories surrounding it
Just when we all thought Francis was out, HE PULLS HIMSELF BACK IN.
I audibly went "oh no" seeing the thumbnail.
Ion know chief I was really looking forward to this one but if Karsten has to do this much to sell this movie, it doesn’t sound too good ☹️
EDIT: This comment aged so well seeing as how the movie was received🤣
Same sentiments but I would still like to watch it! Better to see it for ourselves one day 👀
My takeaway is that the film is probably self-indulgent and the director may be in mental decline
Recent interviews show Coppola is quite lucid for a man his age.
@@agesflow6815 Which is surprising because this movie was a steaming Pile~
Everything I’m hearing about this movie makes it sound like a return to postmodern filmmaking with unclear themes and I think 2020 audiences are gonna hate it.
True, and I think 2030+ audiences are gonna love it
@@t.7124 Agree this has "reviewers trashing it now will pretend when they love when it becomes fashionable as a cult class in 10+ years" written all over it.
That’s the best way to go into it, I probably would’ve walked out at the points that made me want to leave if I watched it completely sober
Just watched a few days ago. Your review sums it up pretty well. One of those movies I don't know if I hated or loved, just a fascinating object to assist, like diving into the creative mind of someone , with the logical thread comparable only to a fever dream. Very special
This sounds like the backstory of a bioshock game

It's a fabulous, tacky, camp and unforgettable cult classic to me 😍🥰
I havent seen this movie but I think it was probably unfortunate that it came out the same weekend as Wild Robot. This movie, Megalopolis seems fascinating and I am definitely going to see it. Wild robot on the other hand (which I havent seen) looks gorgeous. That is hard to beat.

It doesn't matter if your vision or concept is good or even brilliant. If the execution is bad, it's all over.
I just watched it last night. There were a lot of things I liked about the movie but I was still disappointed overall. I wanted it to be a timeless classic but I thought it was only slightly better than mediocre
You're being Kind~
It's a really good movie. messy true, but a nice message and you are able to feel the soul the director poured into this. a true passion project.

Wasn't Jude Law originally attached to it as well? I think I saw him as the only cast member of this film's IMDB page a few years back.
As a video editor, I very much liked the editing. The triptychs were a very nice addition. This movie really swung big, and I can respect that.

The fact that we know every one of these actors real life stories and that they are typically type casts is a major flaw in this.
It doesn't sound too clunky it just sounds very Shakespearean.
I used to go to a club called “Megatripolis”. Yeah, lots of ecstasy and LSD. Good times, noodle salad.
i was also able to see the movie basically only because my friend is a critic for a media site and the best way i can describe the movie is it is a giant mind fuck like and to me has a lot of meaning considering the political and social climate today I can't even really say if its good or bad yet atleast its definitely something you need to sit with for a while since like Karsten said no questions are really answered its very open ended
Southland Tales was a mindfuck and ill leave it at that. Take from that as you will.
Thanks!
I'm actually excited to watch this, I expect it to be whatever it is lol. Love Rumble Fish and other "not good" Coppola movies. IDK, I kinda get it, but also I still enjoy them....
what if neil breen made a hollywood budget movie.
Feels like if “Atlas Shrugged” was a movie
Star Wars Episode 1 was self financed by Lucas, and cost over $100,000,000 and released in 1999!
Sounds kind of like the opposite of "The Fountainhead."
While one can admire and respect all that can go into art, the stories behind it, at the end of the day, is the final product good?
For me, any film is good if it succeeds in what it set out to do. If it does that, then any other commentary is subjective
Time is the greatest critic, let’s see how it holds up in 25 years
I saw this movie today.

Coppola has given the world millions (maybe billions) of hours of entertainment, so the least we can do to pay him back is watch his passion project
"Don't come away with a clear idea of what happened" That sounds like a great thing. Why do I need to be beat over the head with a message. The ambiguity is what is missing from most films. Coppolla has never been for the small minded.
It's a 1920's movie made in the 2020's in all the good and bad ways. And I for one I'm here for it.
Shocked you talked about everyone in the cast.....but LEFT OUT Dustin Hoffman??? That's what I want to know about more than anything! Coppola and Hoffman, together at last! Even if it sucks, I'm interested, that's the number one attraction for me to see it!
