It's actually tennis for me! I think it's such an entertaining sport to watch, love it when the Grand Slams are on. Was always a big fan of Roger Federer.
I loved the way Tashi’s line at the start of the movie when talking about the boys next match against each other. “I just want to watch a good tennis match”, is continued throughout the entire movie, Art and Patrick are just playing her tennis match, they’re trying to win her and Tashi is just dragging them along to create her idea of the perfect tennis match. the way she describes tennis as a relationship between the two playing tennis, is also continued as we see Patrick and Arts relationship be destroyed by Tashis game
The whole movie you hear Tashi constantly putting so much emphasis on relationships and love and passion. Art is love but no passon Patrick is passion but no love and Tashi represents the competition necessary to fuel a good game. Art and Patrick are passionate about each other way before Tashi even enters the picture and it is absolutely what attracts her to them in the first place. But in the beginning of the movie Art and Patrick are having a conversation about how Art thinks he can't beat Patrick and Patrick says he'll throw the game for him but they don't care enough on either side to go all in against one another. Then they keep longing after her in order to feel something and they fail realize that the spark they felt was because of their obsession with each other, the competition she brings to it all is intoxicating to them. Then when they don't see each other for years they feel their lives are lackluster. The movie ends like it does because that match reinvigorates the relationship between them. At that point it doesn't matter who won, that wasn't necessary for us to know
@@AEO21ProductionsI heard the most moans while they were playing, actually, especially towards the end! And Agsma is right - it was definitely an intentional choice. The “unnhh! Unnnh!” back and forth could’ve easily been drowned out, but it was very audible. I think it was a good decision.

Wow now I see this comment. Zendaya and Josh characters were talking in the scene before about how Josh is still the teen/young adult. He never changed. Mike is like smaller, more following of Josh. Does that scene tells us that Zendaya's character realize Mike is more like a kid she has to lead in the career, the same way Josh always lead Mike?
Zendaya portrays the obsessed athlete so well, someone for whom nothing less than perfection will satisfy, and who cannot ever really love anything or anyone but the game.
Yeah that's one thing in the review I don't agree with: I don't think this movie is about being in love because I didn't get the feeling that any of the three characters were in love or even wanted to be in love. my interpretation of the movie: art is ego, pat is passion, tashi is discipline. The characters are placeholders for these qualities and how they interact, their relationships and careers reflect these qualities. pat was the better player of the two when they were younger showing passion is a strong source of motivation and progression to oneself but art always wanted to win, pat just loved to play. This leds them down different paths when tashi is introduced. Tashi is discipline(damn near obssession), art and pat saw her life and who she was and were envious, they wanted her and fought for her, passion won. Pat went on tour and that distanced him from tashi and art, his discipline and desire to win(ego), this led to their break up because she simply "didnt want to be with a tennis player that sucks" (her words not mine). When they broke up, coincidentally she had her career ending injury immediately after, when discipline loses passion it needs new purpose. Art comforts tashi as your ego should. tashi decides to become his coach, and he gets to become a successful well known tennis player, and she gets to live through his tennis career, Pat became a bum. Art begins losing and loses his will to play but is afraid of losing tashi if he retires. Ego is afraid of letting go of something that encompasses a very large part of itself. Art worked so hard to get to this point and is afraid of letting it go because its such a big part of who he is. Before Pat and Art's match, tashi and pat meet and do cool stuff. passion finds discipline again and his drive to win. The game is even, showing that passion and ego can be equal motivators to ones purpose. As the match reaches the end both players had submitted to each other, pat submitting to his desire to win and art overcoming his fear of loss in pursuit of enjoying the match. this final match they finally all 3 come together for a moment when they are aligned. Much like a player in any sport, a moment when your drive to win, your passion for the sport, and your training and hardwork are aligned is best described by tashis monologue. 3:46 I think it's a good face cuz it's just a classic Kubrick Stare, and a good one at that. The cherry on top is the closed mouth smile. Smug and devious
In my opinion, Challengers is neither a mess nor a masterpiece. The film is very good, I was positively surprised, but definitely nothing outstanding. The cinematography is impressive, the dynamic editing and music make this film pulsate. The plot itself is quite simple, the characters are not deepened, but what is most important happens in the relations between the three characters, you can feel the electricity between them. For me, it's a film about passion, love for tennis and what flow is.
Exactly what i thought of the film, not a masterpiece but great. I’d watch again. I think the film has some more depth with the social dynamics between characters.
yeah i think in order to be a masterpiece it needs to be deeper, yk have a bigger message but it doesn’t…which is okay cuz it’s not tying to be, instead it’s just this fun and really well made film that excels in what it’s trying to sell and we need more of these films
i teared up at both knee centric scenes (the tree scene and the pt room) and i as well have had a devastating knee injury. welcome to the club. it fucking sucks
This movie is such a of fresh air. It trumps any current movie. It’s a cocktail of a perfect score, genius writing and a new use of camera angles that had me intoxicated at the end of the movie.
I just watched it and it was an amazing film - totally unexpected the way it was edited and scored. I also liked the fact that Luca Guadagnino doesn't always frame his characters in a perfect way?! He has beautiful composed shots but sometimes it feels that he and his cinematographer avoid perfectly framed medium shots as they want to keep some sort of naturalistic feeling. It shows in the editing as well. He is not afraid of having his scenes feel a big roughly cutted and roughly framed. Great movie! Great cast!
It's also my favourite movie of the year so far! And I agree on the knee scene: a knee injury ended my (not-as-promising) football career and I felt Tashi's so viscerally. I think injury scenes often feel silly or over-the-top but this was just spot on.
@@moi5206not a triangle IMO, it was a straight line. Patrick liked Art, Art loved Tashi, Tashi loved tennis. While bisexuality was exhibited in the film, ultimately it was a straight line. But could be viewed as a triangle, no need to shit on your parade. Life is all about perspective so essentially your comment is your perspective and my comment (this) is my perspective. Therefore, you’re right and I am wrong(in your eyes, and in my personal assumption). Hope you learned something from this comment. Re-read it & digest it if you have to. (I have no problem with LGBTQ+) my comment was/COULD BE useless and unnecessary. Great film, loved it.
@@smittyttg2029 no i get you!! i just meant that most films with 'love triangles' are based solely on two people after one, whereas challengers have them interact as a throuple (kind of, you know, at least the boys kiss at one point and have chemistry with one another) but yeah their relationship is more a straight line than anything
Also had a knee surgery similar to hers two years back and almost cried in the theatre today because the scene was so frustrating lol i hope you're recovering well!!
Yes, I saw that immediately and slightly shrunk in my chair as if he was going to see me as well. The whole time I was thinking ‘ oh God, not right in front of your husband’. 😂
I really love how luca doesn't make a movie that outright says what it means. I love that he does through music and color and cinematography. Its really interesting. I can see why people have issues with this film. its really complex. it requires some digestion and maybe even a second watch. but I love films that are something real. something that can be understood without actual words. What I love most about Lucas films is how easy it is for him to film emotion. through all of the elements, you get EMOTION. i felt our characters anger, stress, and tension. I felt how much inadequate art felt. and i felt how much patrick wanted to be seen by someone. it was almost as if this love triangle was phyiscally binding the three together with a tight rubber band and you were actually watching it snap.
This movie was sooooo good omg. Me and my friend are now obsessed with it. Music was fire, characters were fun to root for because of how good everyone looks, the pov of the tennis ball was so good, we were never bored while watching this. I wish I could experience this in theaters for the first time again. New favorite movie for sure!
This formula worked for me. Was I into Tennis before the movie? Absolutely not. After? No, but I’d watch a match if it were playing. This was a breath of fresh air. I didn’t think it would be worth the watch in IMAX. I was proven wrong. I may never watch this movie again, but I will watch the final scene. There were corny parts for sure, but those can be forgiven. The jokes for the most part landed and didn’t tire out even it was reused. The payoff was incredible. It was incredible storytelling. I liked how Art’s injured wasn’t even mentioned as to how it happened. The focus was about the three main characters and what they had to do with each other. If it didn’t involve individuals it was both, three, or nothing. I liked how you saw the Zendaya’s first match career go through in the background noise. It was thought out and kept you entertained the whole time. The only thing I would change is use less slowmo. If it wasn’t for the direction of the film and all the other things it had going for it, it would have been unbearable. It is forgivable especially for those last few minutes of the film.
This movie blew me away. Just never really seen anything like it like you mentioned in the video. That soundtrack was also the best since Oppenheimer and was downloaded immediately after it finished
i think more than love, this movie is about drive, about what makes you move forward and where are you willing to go to get where you want to, and sacrifices you’re willing to make and in the end, if it really matters at all
It was a very unique movie-going experience. I went in not know a single thing about this movie, and was very surprised by it. Still processing, but I do believe I liked it.
i looooved this movie, just amazing pace and editing with the music and the different shots of them playing just ahhhhh loved it. Plus yes I agree they were all beautiful people, filmed beautifully, like wowwww
I feel like this movie was a darker Love and Basketball but for white people, with two guys who ultimately end up falling back in love lol… Oh yeah and the girl is evil lol
That is exactly what I said after coming out of the theatre. Yes, I was aware of how ridiculous it could be seen as, it was perfect, and HOW HAS NOTHING BEEN MADE LIKE THIS BEFORE.
I feel like a lot of people don't talk about the knee scene enough tbh. I also had knee surgery (blew my ACL and meniscus) and seeing the injury occur, seeing the emotional aftermath, Zendaya pushing herself through, the frustration, it all really hit me to my core. The way her knee gave out and the recovery process was eerily similar to what I went through, and I was fighting for my life during that scene man 😭
This film was one of the best I’ve seen this year. I will definitely be going to see it again, something I haven’t done since spiderverse last year. Few films grab my attention like this one.
“Luca Guadagnino is one of the only directors working today who knows how to make an entertaining movie” lmao what? Like, I’m a huge fan of the guy but that’s such a blanket statement
Probably because you had known both these informations before the movie. That being said….i knew both the info too but halfway through the movie I was just pulled in and just thought of them as their characters.

I loved it up until the ending. I had NO IDEA what was happening for the last fifteen minutes or so! Maybe I need to know more about Germany in the late 70’s?
I fucked up my knees nearly a decade ago, and that knee scene sent me back to the same traumatic shock I felt in that moment. I had to stop watching and lay down for a few minutes, but I can't help but respect a movie with that kind of power over me.
in my theater everyone laughed at the....j*rk off scene 😅 i think that's honestly the best way to describe it lol - but everyone was quiet for the tell me it doesn't matter. yeah - it's been a couple hours already and I can't stop thinking about it. it's really something special - for some reason it felt like an old movie and a new movie all at once - like classic but also fresh - i was asking myself "why aren't more movies like this"
07:30 Most likely because they shot it in regular frame rate but decided to make it into slow motion in post. I'm not saying they lack the foresight of shooting high frame rate for the scene, but if you're referring to the scene where they make out by the car, I'd guess that they shot the masters with regular camera and it happens to be the best take for performance and just went with it
The film was truly compelling, I was just captivated the entire time wondering how I’ve never seen a film like this before. And good lord, that score. Yeah this needs a rewatch.
I loved this movie so much I felt so bad for art , especially how he was sleeping so peacefully with their daughter Omgggg I loved seeing zendaya like this , I hated the ending but I knew it was gonna be one of those ending so your thought run wild
His is my favourite performance in this movie. But I also wanted to see more of him and Zendaya onscreen - that’s the relationship I wanted to see more of.
7:38 the choppy frame rate in that scene is very obviously a dramatic choice reflecting/building the tension around Tashi/Pat's double betrayal. You may as well call the movie messy because it was stormy as hell in that one scene but sunny in all the others.
The standout chemistry and core relationship for me was between Art and Patrick. The way they played together and against does make them understand each other more than anyone else. The ending made up for a lot of messiness. Tashi wants to see Art fight to win & that meant much more than the result.
idk if you'll see this comment but the movie resembles so much of the anime "Ping Pong" which happens to be my fav TV Show: the scores are incredibly similar, the ending is thematically close, a lot of things honestly down to shots following the ball back and forth. i dont consider this copying at all cus the movie is uniquely its own and also DAMN it was awesome to see that vibe live-action.

I think the film has some more depth with the social dynamics between characters.
agree w u completely
yeah i think in order to be a masterpiece it needs to be deeper, yk have a bigger message but it doesn’t…which is okay cuz it’s not tying to be, instead it’s just this fun and really well made film that excels in what it’s trying to sell and we need more of these films
i teared up at both knee centric scenes (the tree scene and the pt room) and i as well have had a devastating knee injury. welcome to the club. it fucking sucks
I had a bad elbow injury last year and felt that lurch in my stomach myself, never mind the same injury that much have been awful
When Zendaya went "My potions are fit for a beast, let alone a man", I gooned.
on jah my rizzler!!
@@jonathanmak1424 mom, please stop
i left the theatre like 4 hours ago and i'm still thinking about that ending scene
It was a film for bisexuals and I love it for that!
GOD YES. I was so satisfied.
Ikr finally an actual love triangle for once
@@smittyttg2029WAIT. PATRICK LIKED ART??
This and Past Lives are the best double feature since Lost in Translation and Her.
YES✍🏻✍🏻✍🏻✍🏻
Funny Games and Suspiria say Hi.
past lives is overrated
Sorry what’s a double feature
Funny that the directors for both movies are married LOL
Runquist is Karstening again
I’m gonna karst
About to run my quist
May December 2: The Karstening
RUNQUIST KARSTENS BACK
She karsten on my runquist till i review
Also had a knee surgery similar to hers two years back and almost cried in the theatre today because the scene was so frustrating lol i hope you're recovering well!!
Did you guys notice in the tashi and Patrick scene the poster of her and art were behind them
Yes, I saw that immediately and slightly shrunk in my chair as if he was going to see me as well. The whole time I was thinking ‘ oh God, not right in front of your husband’. 😂
I like how immersive the tennis scenes were I kept feeling like the ball would hit me at times lol
I LOVED every messy, complex, co-dependent minute of it!
Thank you for mentioning the soundtrack, I feel like it's criminally underappreciated. It had me mesmerized from that opening scene.
Genuinely loved this film so much- need to see it at least 3 more times
This movie was sooooo good omg. Me and my friend are now obsessed with it. Music was fire, characters were fun to root for because of how good everyone looks, the pov of the tennis ball was so good, we were never bored while watching this. I wish I could experience this in theaters for the first time again. New favorite movie for sure!
Karsten PLEASE watch God's Own Country. what Josh does in that movie is crazy. truly one of the best working right now.
He’s incredible. I still can’t believe he was Prince Charles in The Crown as well. He’s extremely versatile
Josh looks like one of my ex's whose name was also Josh which is really funny and a bit eerie to me lol but yea he's hot!
i actually really enjoyed the movie. the music and tension were insane.
Loved this movie, banger score, great acting, well told story and solid drama
That soundtrack was so amazing, felt like dancing in the middle of the scenes lol
i think more than love, this movie is about drive, about what makes you move forward and where are you willing to go to get where you want to, and sacrifices you’re willing to make
and in the end, if it really matters at all
It was a very unique movie-going experience. I went in not know a single thing about this movie, and was very surprised by it. Still processing, but I do believe I liked it.
i looooved this movie, just amazing pace and editing with the music and the different shots of them playing just ahhhhh loved it. Plus yes I agree they were all beautiful people, filmed beautifully, like wowwww
damn everyone keeps praising this movie! i can't wait to watch it!
I can't wait for you to react to you Chu !
It was horrible don’t recommend it
definitely watch it in cinemas first before doing a reaction if you ever want to do one

That is not a romcom. It’s a sports romance through and through
I feel like this movie was a darker Love and Basketball but for white people, with two guys who ultimately end up falling back in love lol…
Oh yeah and the girl is evil lol
@@Nooooooooooooooooooooo7913 Love and Basketball for bisexual white people I’m crying 😭 😂
@@SmartStart24 lmaooo yup!
That is exactly what I said after coming out of the theatre. Yes, I was aware of how ridiculous it could be seen as, it was perfect, and HOW HAS NOTHING BEEN MADE LIKE THIS BEFORE.
added to one of my favorite movie ever. I was hooked to every emotion of the throupe
I feel like a lot of people don't talk about the knee scene enough tbh. I also had knee surgery (blew my ACL and meniscus) and seeing the injury occur, seeing the emotional aftermath, Zendaya pushing herself through, the frustration, it all really hit me to my core. The way her knee gave out and the recovery process was eerily similar to what I went through, and I was fighting for my life during that scene man 😭
Going to see this tomorrow. Can't wait
Edit:The horniest film I've seen in a while.
This film was one of the best I’ve seen this year. I will definitely be going to see it again, something I haven’t done since spiderverse last year. Few films grab my attention like this one.
I’ve already seen it 3 times and oh boy is it even better on rewatch when you know all the background and what happened the night before the big game
We surprisingly really enjoyed this movie. It was really well written with flawed characters that made it fun to watch. It was a fun drama to watch.
That knee scene lowkey was a jumpscare.
8:09 yup my favorite movie of the year too ❤
“Luca Guadagnino is one of the only directors working today who knows how to make an entertaining movie” lmao what? Like, I’m a huge fan of the guy but that’s such a blanket statement
Yeah wtf was that comment I had to go back for a second
I was hoping someone called this out, I laughed out loud.
I was thinking the same-- I feel like Yorgos Lanthimos is bringing something different too
@@stellarphaseI on the other hand, cannot stand Yorgos
100% agree with the mike faist theatre kid thing. Also zendaya sometimes gives Disney channel vibes to me
Probably because you had known both these informations before the movie. That being said….i knew both the info too but halfway through the movie I was just pulled in and just thought of them as their characters.
been watching you for a while. just want to say thanks and i think your video essays are important
I fell for this film, and even harder after that ending. Such an incredible film
Yeah seeing Zendaya about to have a three way in the trailer really opened my eyes like bruh
I’m sorry, you weren’t crazy about his Suspiria remake? WHAT? the fact that I just found out the guy who directed that movie directed this movie makes me wanna watch this movie
I loved it up until the ending. I had NO IDEA what was happening for the last fifteen minutes or so! Maybe I need to know more about Germany in the late 70’s?
Suspiria is soo boring
@@samfilmkid 😂 I’m sure they were up to some wild shit
@@hazardrock7120 ironically I feel that way about ‘Call me by your name’
Suspiria and Call Me By Your Name are still my favorite Luca movies.
I fucked up my knees nearly a decade ago, and that knee scene sent me back to the same traumatic shock I felt in that moment. I had to stop watching and lay down for a few minutes, but I can't help but respect a movie with that kind of power over me.
people seem to be forgetting Malcom & Marie, genuinely one of Zendaya's best performances.
YES I am so glad Kirsten Runquist validates my feelings about this movie. SO SO good
in my theater everyone laughed at the....j*rk off scene 😅 i think that's honestly the best way to describe it lol - but everyone was quiet for the tell me it doesn't matter. yeah - it's been a couple hours already and I can't stop thinking about it. it's really something special - for some reason it felt like an old movie and a new movie all at once - like classic but also fresh - i was asking myself "why aren't more movies like this"
07:30 Most likely because they shot it in regular frame rate but decided to make it into slow motion in post. I'm not saying they lack the foresight of shooting high frame rate for the scene, but if you're referring to the scene where they make out by the car, I'd guess that they shot the masters with regular camera and it happens to be the best take for performance and just went with it
Challengers was a movie about breaking tennis rackets
Luca Guadagnino did it again!! A masterpiece and I knew you would love it Karsten 💙👏
"one of the only filmakers today who knows how to make an entertaining movie" is a hell of a hot take
In a perfect world, this film would gross $1,000,000,000, but this is not a perfect world.
I DO NOT CARE this movie is probably one of my favorites OF ALL TIME!!!!!
He Karsten on my Runquist till I feel things
The film was truly compelling, I was just captivated the entire time wondering how I’ve never seen a film like this before. And good lord, that score. Yeah this needs a rewatch.
We get it - they're sweaty. We get it - it's windy.
Awesome acting awesome match scenes and magical background sounds
I loved this movie so much I felt so bad for art , especially how he was sleeping so peacefully with their daughter Omgggg I loved seeing zendaya like this , I hated the ending but I knew it was gonna be one of those ending so your thought run wild
i can't stop thinking about this movie, I watched it twice and I can't get enough.
as a bisexual this film made my hormones burst out of my body in the theater. The blast radius put two people in hospital.
the day i found out that trent and atticus did the score, i was sold. i dont even needto watch a trailer.i didnt evenit was about tennis lol
I felt things in the theater
Girl same 😂
Really liked Josh O'Connor in La Chimera a couple of weeks ago. Really excited for Challengers now.
His is my favourite performance in this movie. But I also wanted to see more of him and Zendaya onscreen - that’s the relationship I wanted to see more of.
Movie seller. I am going to the cinema, and require only your strongest movies
My movies are too strong for you traveller
I watched this movie yesterday. I watched two other big TH-camrs that do theater reviews. This man gets it, the other two don't. Subscribed!
i loed this movie. it was cinematic and dramatic. i loved the complexity of the characters and their dynamics.
saying mike faist sounded like he was abt to burst into song has me pissing myself
Literally just came from the theater to watch this. This is a masterpiece ! They must have put crack in it or something.
Challenger is my favorite movie of 2024 thus far. It's brilliantly written, directed and acted. ❤❤❤❤
7:38 the choppy frame rate in that scene is very obviously a dramatic choice reflecting/building the tension around Tashi/Pat's double betrayal.
You may as well call the movie messy because it was stormy as hell in that one scene but sunny in all the others.
This shit was fire 🔥🔥 probably the best film of the year so far .
They ate, but we were fed.
The review we are waiting for is here!
Happy to hear your thoughts on this Karsten, was also hoping for a video on Civil War?
