There is something about knowing a film I saw as a teen on the big screen when it came out finding a strong audience today that feels so amusing. Same with "Coraline".
I got to see Napoleon Dynamite in Austin as a special QnA screening, and Napoleon, Pedro, and Uncle Rico were there in person, and afterwards I got to go on the stage and do a dance off in front of the crowd since I dressed as Napoleon along with everyone else who dressed as characters from the movie. I didn’t get to say much to the Jons but Efren was super nice and he shock my hand, and that made my week. They all seemed like really nice and cool people and even though I didn’t win any of the cool prizes they had for trivia or the dance off, it’s a movie memory I’ll forever cherish. Oh my god, it's probably been a month and I still can't stop thinking about Between the Temples. Holy crap I loved it. The Substance probably tops it objectively, but it's a top contender for my top movie of the year. It's cool that you mentioned La Chimera too, what s cool movie, I can see why you thought of it. Ironically the speedy edited moments reminded me of Uncut Gems, but in a fun way not an intense UG way. The Master is totally slept on. It's easily top 3 PTA for me.
I'm glad that you got to see Baraka. One of my favorite movies. It's a good watch when life is getting stressful and I need a film to meditate over for an hour or 2
It’s interesting you watched Baraka and The Master back-to-back, as PTA had said the iconic monkey shot (8:38) directly inspired the introduction shot of Freddie right at the beginning of the movie!
excited to hear what you thought about The Big Red One! Most people consider it Fuller's most well rounded experience, though personally I found The Steel Helmet to be a relatively more enticing watch.
As someone who thoroughly enjoyed the first one, I agree. Definitely didn't need a sequel and I have very little interest in watching the second one. Idk, it feels like it's going to be missing a lot of what made the Joker compelling in the first one.
@@joyc.e.7511 I really liked Joker 2 but it's definitely not for everyone. If you don't have much familiarity with psychological thrillers or dramas, it will feel pretty disjointed to you. I think so little happens in that movie that if you aren't interested in watching the movie, you're not missing out on much.
i think the original is pretty good but that’s about it. personally the sequel has elevated joker (2019) for me because it was so bad it made me appreciate what we already had before
So many good ones! What a perfectly curated list for this time of year. It's like, if these movies were a month, they'd all be September. Accept maybe Moonstruck but somehow it fits.

Out of nowhere I guess but I recommend you watch the 18 minute Adult Swim pilot Eggland. There's a lot of mixed reactions in the comments that make it feel pretty interesting to find out how everyone feels.

Even if you've never watched the show it still works well as a standalone feature although context does help._ Delicious in Dungeon (Season 1) - 8.5/10 - _A really great fantasy anime with some of the best world building I've ever seen. Every part of the dungeon is so exquisitely well detailed that it feels like a real living breathing world. The main leads are all very likeable and the english dub is great. Can't recommend this show enough._ X-Men '97 (Season 1) - 9/10 - _I'm a bit late on this but I'm happy to say that this lived up to all the hype and expectations I had. The best part about this show is how well it develops almost every single character in a meaningful way and makes them all stand out to each other. If you liked Baraka you should definitely watch Koyaanisqatsi if you haven’t already. The person who directed Baraka is the cinematographer here and it has an incredible score by Philip Glass.
Hey Karsten, been loving watching your videos and hearing your insight on movies. With Halloween coming up, I would love to hear your opinions on a select few that have been my favorite. Ichi the Killer, I Drink Your Blood, and The Bannana Splits movie are my favorites rn. They’re all of different styles and quality but all I feel are a good time and would recommend to anyone watching horror. Cheers!!
Days of heaven is such an INCREDIBLE film… cinematography by Néstor Almendros, one of the best cinematographers in film history 🥹 he captured film like it was a painting🤍

I watched a couple of Robin Williams movies this month but not Dead Poets Society because I think it’s supposed to be quite sad? And I wasn’t really in the mood for that lol. I definitely will watch it one of these days, though, it’s been on my mind for a long time. And Top Gun: Maverick is sooo good!
@@rocco3605 dead poets society does have a sad part to it but there is a lot of joy in it too! As for top gun it’s not my usual sort of film but i recognise that it is a good film and I had fun with it!
@@niamhwelsh That’s good to know, thank you! ☺️ I was pretty sure that was the case but now I don’t think it’s, like, too heavy for me to absolutely need to be in a certain mood. And yeah, I think the reason why I preferred Top Gun: Maverick to the original Top Gun is that it felt like it was more focused on the emotional stakes and less on the technical jargon, which the original had a lot of and that’s not inherently bad but... I get kind of... not bored but lost, basically. :P
I watched The Substance only a couple of days ago. Didn't really like it. The whole last third dragged on so much I was hoping for it to end. As soon as they set up the rules about the substance and how it works, you have a good idea exactly how the rest of the film will play out. Could've been a solid short film, but stretches the pretty simple story to something much longer and it suffers for it.
15:30 I would imagine it's a followup to your Presidential ranking? Vice presidents, maybe? Or perhaps Supreme Court justices? (They can't ALL prefer "My Cousin Vinny.")
Just the best films I have seen last month: A Taste of Cold Steel 1970 Murder by Contract 1958 Enter the Clones of Bruce 2023 (Documentary) Dance with the Devil (Perdita Durango) 1997 (rewatch) Swift Sword 1980 A Better Tomorrow I+II 1986/1987 Tomie 1998 (rewatch) Flower & Snake II 2005 The Killer 1989 (rewatch) Bullet in the Head 1990 A Chinese Ghost Story I-III 1987/1990/1991 The Queen of Black Magic 1981 Hard Boiled 1992 (rewatch) The Peacock King 1988 Lady with a Sword 1971 Painted Skin 1992 And yesterday (so this month, but I need to mention it because it is so great!): Journey to the West 2021, which may be one of the highlights of this year.
I just got a Criterion Channel subscription as a gift. I'm a little lost in the volume of what is available to watch. Can Karsten or someone else give me some must see movies that are available right now? So far I watched The Most Dangerous Game and Deep Red
Karsten I would absolutely LOVE to hear your thoughts on transformers one. Its such a special movie especially for what it could mean for animation moving forward if it does well and I don't see enough people talking about it.

watched these back to back and it was a wild experience

The SpongeBob movie is an absolute classic. Rewatch a couple days ago and still enjoyed as much as I did as a kid.

Love I Am Cuba and Taste of Cherry! 🤩
If you liked Baraka you should definitely watch Koyaanisqatsi if you haven’t already. The person who directed Baraka is the cinematographer here and it has an incredible score by Philip Glass.
I care about the wild robot but not watching your video until I see the film! I can't wait
Damn can't think what connects The Good Doctor and Live free or Die Hard.
Cheers!!
15:30 is it a video talking about Kevin Smith’s acting?
If you liked Baraka you gotta watch Samsara stat
Days of heaven is such an INCREDIBLE film… cinematography by Néstor Almendros, one of the best cinematographers in film history 🥹 he captured film like it was a painting🤍
4:08 and 6:29 for a sec i thought you used the same clip but it's just a similar scene of someone taking off their sock. i know what type of man you are karsten
Loved the substance
days of heaven and barry lyndon in one month- 'nuff said
You should check out Samsara - it’s the sequel to Baraka. Just as mesmerizing!
As someone who's name is Aguirre thank you for saying it right
Baraka is a GOD DAMN masterpiece!!!
You should watch The new year that never came, the winner of the Venice Festival’s Orizzonti section
You're like Ryan Gosling in Drive, if instead of driving he watched movies.
In September I saw:
- Okja
- C'mon C'mon
- The Holdovers
- The Green Knight
my sept watches and my ratings:
Her 4.5 ⭐️
Lisa Frankenstein 3.5 ⭐️
NT Live: Prima Facie 5 ⭐️
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 3.5 ⭐️
Dead Poets Society 4.5 ⭐️
Top Gun Maverick 3.5 ⭐️
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 5 (rewatch) ⭐️
Prima Facie is soo good
@@KeepDatRatchet it’s brilliant, would love to see a dvd release or something
Great set of movies!
- Flow: 4/5
- Sasquatch Sunset: 4/5
- Kill: 4/5
- The Fault (1980): 3.5/5
- The Surfer: 3.5/5
- Alien Romulus: 3.5/5
I watched The Substance only a couple of days ago.
Didn't really like it.
The whole last third dragged on so much I was hoping for it to end.
As soon as they set up the rules about the substance and how it works, you have a good idea exactly how the rest of the film will play out.
Could've been a solid short film, but stretches the pretty simple story to something much longer and it suffers for it.
0:07, Background music name plsss
Video idea: ‘Times when the Oscars got it wrong, and what should have won instead’
month 4 of asking karsten to add chapters (time stamps) with the titles
15:30 I would imagine it's a followup to your Presidential ranking? Vice presidents, maybe? Or perhaps Supreme Court justices? (They can't ALL prefer "My Cousin Vinny.")
The next video is about the font of the movie poster
You should watch His three daughters, great movie on grief
if you liked baraka you should get into the qatsi trilogy. Koyaanisqatsi is a masterpiece and fricke was cinematographer for it
I will be going to see the wild robot next weekend after I get paid 🙏 gotta support good animation and I really need it right about now
Is the video for The good doctor, Live free or die hard and The big red one, about thrillers that involve moral dilemmas?
Just the best films I have seen last month:

A Better Tomorrow I+II 1986/1987
Tomie 1998 (rewatch)

Lady with a Sword 1971
Painted Skin 1992
And yesterday (so this month, but I need to mention it because it is so great!): Journey to the West 2021, which may be one of the highlights of this year.
Its such a special movie especially for what it could mean for animation moving forward if it does well and I don't see enough people talking about it.
expound on the "what it could mean for animation moving forward" part pls, i havent heard about that
dude baraka is the shit on some acid
if you liked Baraka, you have to watch its main inspiration, Koyaanisqatsi.
Karsten, I have a recommendation for your monkey Mondays. Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness (1927). Wild stuff & much funnier than I expected.
