To me, the Zach Wilson experience is such a fascinating microcosm of what is really valuable in football. Sometimes, I notice that a certain talent will come into the league that just causes everyone to look for the next version of it. A great example is Antonio Gates. Chargers find a hall of famer who barely played any football but had great basketball experience, which helped him win as a tight end. Then, everyone wanted their tight ends to be basketball players. Cam Newton becomes an MVP, and now teams are looking for the next big QB that can run (Kaepernick, Tebow, etc.).
Well, Patrick Mahomes just won the super bowl after throwing for 5k yards and 50+ TDs the year before. Now everyone wants the next Mahomes. So, teams look for a guy who can make those off platform throws deep and get outside the pocket. Zach Wilson did a lot of that at BYU. If you wanted to convince yourself he had Mahomes potential, you could easily put together a lot of film to do it. However, he also had a losing record against winning teams, and when I say losing, I mean he put some BAD things on film. All the shit JT is talking about here, that was on the tape at BYU. But Mahomes put some BAD stuff on tape too, so I guess it's okay, right? This is why you have to make sure guys can do the simple things before trying to find someone who can do something extra. Like, if a dude can't make close to 80% of their free throws, how on earth could you think they'll be able to make 45% of their threes? The dude looks absolutely ATROCIOUS 90% of the time. Sure, he'll do cool shit 10% of the time. But give him layups, and he'll give it to the other team, or put it in the dirt

    • @Don-md6wn
      @Don-md6wn ปีที่แล้ว +21

Now everybody is trying to find the next Josh Allen, so you have people actually projecting guys like Will Levis and Anthony Richardson ahead of Bryce Young in the draft because they're big and have big arms. Never mind that they've both looked completely overmatched by decent college defenses, and even some bad ones (Levis had 98 yards and 3 picks against Tennessee, which gave up 284 yards a game passing, 125th of 131 FBS teams). Anthony Richardson threw for barely 200 yards a game, completed only 53.8% of his passes and had 17 TD passes and 9 interceptions. He throws virtually nothing but fastballs and looked absolutely lost trying to play from the pocket in several games.

Some guys aren’t used to nfl timing and nfl speed esspecially when they switch to a scheme that is literally nothing like their college scheme and doesn’t play to their strengths at all. Zach is used to a more open field spread offense from his college days and the jets offense is not as spread out or built on db leverage like spread systems, its built on timing and rhythm, two things that ZW struggled with in college already. Look at burrow, first half of the season they are 4-4 and struggling on offense while running an outside zone shanny kind of scheme. They switch to a more up tempo spread out offense that plays into burrows strenths more specifically into the way he sees the football field and processes space and they havent lost since. Also ZW is accountable for his actions and he is a leader. The only thing you know about his character is a 5 second clip where he said the word “no”. Nearly every bazarro miss and the technical miss on the film was due to his off arm swinging down hard and out, causing him to miss left. He should’ve looked like he was eating a sandwich with his off arm, not trying to elbow someone behind him. I don’t know why he has sound fundamentals on crazy throws rolling to the opposite side, but his form goes to shot on easy thows that are like 10-20 yards down the field. This tendency also causes balls to just die on you. You have to use what feel like more arm strength for less yardage.

It's really nuts. Nice analysis on his throws, btw. Because since the Steelers game he's deteriorated in processing speed, pocket awareness, and accuracy. But one thing he's done since he's been drafted is miss passes to the flat. It's a mechanical issue and should be easy to fix; if Knapp or Beck were still there it probably would have been ironed out.
Le Fleur has been pushing for Mike White the whole season. Le Fleur's crew isn't interested in coaching him. Mike White got a simplified playbook tailored to his strengths, which is something that Le Fleur has never done for Wilson. And White's skills, to the extent he has them, are a match to Le Fleur's offense!

not a Jets fan here but look at it an objective way. Hitting on QB1 is difficult. GM Joe Douglas has managed to hit on OTHER important parts of the roster (DT, edge talents, CB, parts of the O-line, Safety, WRs). Yes its on Douglas as well to pick Darnold the 2nd after he saw the train wreck that was Darnold the 1st. But as long as he can recognize he screwed up on Wilson and he's making active moves to get a better replacement be it in the draft or the FA market, count on him to continue making those roster improvements.

@@t4d0W I agree with you. Douglas has to come clean with ownership and if Zach is released at least within the organization from top to bottom evaluate how they missed so badly. We are talking scouts, Zach 's background with his teammates BYU(never a captain), level of competition a college qb prospect faced. Zach 's best year BYU played a weakened schedule as they garbage teams who had not canceled their season due to covid. Does our next qb prospect have enough elite physical and athletic traits for today's NFL. Zach was undersized in college and still is. But Unlike Murray or Bryce Young he was never tested in college(nor hit enough) to see if he could overcome his slender frame against the best competition
We were told he had an incredible are. He doesn't, he is capable of some impressive and unimpressive throws.
He ran for good yardage in college. But again who fast was he against that competition. He barely attempts to run anymore as the speed in NFL closes too fast and he gets hit. Don't forget he conveniently developed a hamstring and didn't run the 40yd dash at the combine. He is good athlete, not a great athlete in the NFL.
Worse is he is panicky and scared to get hit. The hits, the injuries and now the teammates turning on him have robbed the kid of any swagger he had coming in.
But this can't happen again. If Douglas stays he to honestly reflect why two high 1st rd picks in Wilson and Becton are busts. Why Mims a high 2nd rd pick is a bench player who asked to be traded. Why another high 2nd rd pick Moore asked to be traded only a few games into his 2nd yr.

He gets an ounce of pressure and he immediately wants to roll out horizontally. Something I like with Fields is he really stands tall in the pocket and only runs when he has to. Zach is too skittish. I do think mental processing part of it is huge. It's just too fast for him...and thats consequently screwing with his head and making the easy more difficult. When you see those occasionally wow throws...thats him just being mentally loose and throwing the ball as he knows it. Just having confidence in yourself carries over. I really think taking a privileged kid from a bubble in Utah and making him franchise QB in NY was a bad idea. Just the fact he wasnt voted team captain at BYU was a huge red flag. That’s the Jets environment that caused this insecurity and pressure … You can’t compete for the playoffs while you’re trying to groom a very green QB. @@FirstNameLastName-kt3zn As it turns out, the OC was not at all interested in Wilson succeeding. He's been pushing for Mike White since last year.
The whole thing was such a case of mismanagement: as a rookie, Wilson memorized the playbook and then told Le Fleur he found parts of it extremely complicated. Le Fleur basically told him to go pound sand. Then White, who's been a Jet for as long as Wilson has (and has been in the league for a whole lot longer, comes to Le Fleur with the same complaint. Le Fleur does up a whole new simplified short playbook for him. The rot in the OC's staff was deep.
The irony is that Le Fleur had been arguing that White fit the offensive scheme better. Probably true -- Wilson is more of an Air Coryell type quarterback. But then why are you changing your playbook for the backup who's supposed to fit the offense when you wouldn't lift a finger for the starter who wasn't as good a match? Also, shouldn't a competent OC build his scheme around the long term talent he has? It's like if the OC of the Colts gave a rookie Peyton Manning a playbook full of designed QB runs.
I guess that's why he's the former offensive coordinator. I can't help but wonder what would have happened if Trevor Lawrence had come here. He's another QB with a non-MLF skillset. He'd be considered a bust.

Excellent break down of film. What this exemplifies is the distinction between athletisism....strong arm... speed....etc... and how that benefits the QB play..... and the mental abilities...being able to slow game down mentally.....see the field...anticipate the defense and the check down options.
Let's face it....Tom Brady is not the most athletic QB but is the best...its the mental part of the game that is so important at the QB position.
On a positive perspective you cannot teach athletisism..... Zak has that gift....but can you teach what amounts to mental agility....smarts.. not panicking in the pocket? Perhaps.... but as Geno Smith shows....that mental talent if initially lacking can only be gained through lots of playing time..... an option the Jets may have unexpectedly ran out of time for ad discussed further below.
Mike White is not the most gifted athletically but you can immediately see the distinction in his play.....the decisiveness he brings to his play compared to Zak.
In the end if this is another lost play off season for the Jets....despite the great work of Joe Douglas otherwise....the fault lay on him and the other coaches....
who I suspect all along knew White was a better QB now.... but for reasons other than just wanting to have best chance of winning the game ......decided to stick with Wilson. That change needed to come 2nd half of 2nd Patriots game at latest but really earlier.
When it became clear the Jets had assembled a winning roster more quickly than expected the objective of this season needed to change immediately from one of developing your prized number 2 draft pick to that of ensuring you're playing with youre best QB right now and winning now. Who knows what will be next year...what free agency does...what injuries do.... you had a chance this year and you....the Jets management.... waited too long to make the needed change at QB and in end it seems gave us Jets fans one more season of "same 'old Jets".
It was obvious immediately that White had better command of the game. Us fans knew it. Worse the players in the locker room knew it. And you knew it too but you were worried more about how you would be perceived if your number 2 puck was benched instead of winning now....its a shame. Will never know but I suspect Mike White operates the offense effectively enough to put a 3 point field goal up against the Pats and we win that game. That may turn out to be the playoff crusher. Mac Jones was also held to 3 points but the Jets defense played amazingly....but Jones was completing passes...moving the chains...Jones had enabled a functioning offense that was shut down by the Jets defense.... whereas and in contrast to how in that game Zak was completely dysfunctional.... was obvious... it was dog poo as the coach admitted. Had White played 2nd half we win 6 to 3. Oh well.

Everyone’s riding that bandwagon that it’s over for Zach Wilson with the Jets except the coaching staff. But I blame this more on the New York City expectations from the Press, the PTSD ridden Jets fanatics who want instant gratification, and an unexpectedly ready to compete surrounding cast around Zach Wilson.
Wilson played a total of 1-1/4 season of NFL Football. This is simply not enough a sample size for a very raw, low floor QB coming out of BYU who really hasn’t fully learned to play the the QB position in college unlike the likes of Trevor Lawrence and Justing Fields. And yet both Trevor and Justin have been allowed to go through their growing pains and mistakes without the insane amount of scrutiny that Wilson has had to go through from the get go in NYC with Jets fandom … I am here in NYC; Jets fans in general were obstinate and abusive from the get go; they gave Zach Wilson ZERO margin for error. So Wilson was drafted by a team that ultimately had no patience for him to develop over 3-4 seasons; and once the team realized that the surrounding cast was ready to compete, Zach Wilson’s developmental timeline be damned; and unfortunately, the young surrounding talents with the Jets also haven’t any patients for Zach’s growing pains.
So I see this more so as the Jets and NYC atmosphere with fandom and press failing Zach Wilson.
Not all young QBs improve in a linear trajectory; some experience growing pains and obstacles that result in regressions and erratic swings like Wilson. So it’s not fair to give up on ZW in less than two full seasons that came with lots of drama, injuries and pressure to win now.
SO I won’t follow the herd preaching the narrative that Zach Wison is done or is a bust, not even in NYC … If what Saleh and Lafleur are saying are as sincere as they sound, I think the Jets will either keep Mike White, or bring in a stable game manager average QB to manage games such as Garopolo or Derek Carr to appease to a ready defense and offensive players in order to compete and win games; they'll keep Zach Wilson on the team to sit, deal with his mental issues and learn like Patrick Mahomes did for a year or so. Zach has two seasons left on his rookie contract; unless someone blows the Jets’ minds with a trade, They’re keeping Wilson to resume his development with patience … I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he’s simply a slow learner longer term project who needs time to learn to process defenses and learn to play the QB position in the NFL.

I appreciate these breakdowns. I struggle to balance giving players time, and figuring out why these things are happening to him. There’s enough blame for Zach, the coaches and inexperienced.
I don’t think he’s well coached in the offense, I also think he is way into his own head/second guessing or getting too greedy. The INT play is maddening because of how open Garrett is and I think he got greedy for the wheel for a big play, but he didn’t need that route. Left so many yards on the field. SMH

Zach Wilson makes the hard throws looks easy.
The easy reads and throws, which are in more abundance than the hard ones during a game, are the ones that are costing him and his team.
He needs a really good sports psychologist to deal with the pressure he is facing.
A lot of these failures have been accentuated in the second half of the season, mainly because the running game has stalled and the pressure is failing back on him to drive his team.
The BYU plays are his comfort zone, but you cannot pull those often on NFL and you those should be your last resort.
    The Jets face a dilemma:
    1. Develop Zach and give him as much time to improve on those "easy reads" and potentially sacrifice other player's development and team's playoff aspirations
    2. Move him to backup QB, whilst keeping M. White or potentially another seasoned QB as the top choice, whilst still allowing him to develop/improve. This also allows the Jets to develop the other offensive players.
    3. Trade him
It feels to me that 2 is option Jets will take.
Consistency throws will trump Hero throws 90% of the times, and for most NFL teams with a good defense that is more than enough.

Steve McNair, Carson Palmer, Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, Pat Mahomes, Joe Montana all sat. They all started lots of games in college. There are exceptions of course. I've heard a successful GM say that QBs should start at least 28 games in college. Of course there are exceptions. NFL GMs are drafting guys that played half, 1 season 2 seasons in college and then throwing them into the defensive meat grinder that is the NFL. Most of these guys are not close to being ready.
I'm in NYC. Zack should have never been drafted that high. He didn't play enough in college. Add the media in the mix and he was set up to fail. If he had to play the Jets should have gotten a veteran, professional wr for him to play with. Someone that runs tight routes and has NFL savvy.
    Excellent breakdown as usual.

Wilson is kind of the burden on the offensive side of things because the defense needs a moderate or okay offense at best, but the offense can’t operate without a good play caller. He’s missed some very easy passes for NFL standards or football standards in general, sometimes he does excessive things that don’t need to happen, such as, the wildly overthrown ball at the New England game. That’s just my opinion, love the videos Coach O’Sullivan keep it up!

Zach takes a lot of heat for mistakes made by his skill position players. First play is a good example of that to me. And then the last play by Elijah Moore. Lots of detail mistakes within this offense. Overall sloppy not just from the QB. Just not a tight enough operation imho.
Run game, Oline, Receivers all making mistakes. That’s coaching. OB coach and OC need to adjust. It’s week 16. They haven’t done it all year.

I mean, those passes he made deep don't win you games they just look good on highlights, and that's the problem he's all flash, no substance. It's the difference between a home run hitter and Derek Jeter. A power hitter batting average is usually low, but home runs are usually high, but If the opposing team pitches around the power hitter he becomes obsolete while a guy like Derek Jeter was fantastic at the little things and could occasionally hit Homer's, his fundamentals were so great he was dangerous no matter what the opposing teams pitching and defense did against him

What do you think the jets would take for Wilson? Do you think a 3rd and 6th or 3rd this year and 5th or maybe 4th next year? I'm a lions fan. The lions really need a back up. Someone like Goff who knows how to stay in the pocket and step up or slide a foot right or left. Goff is best with a clean pocket. Wilson is best with no pocket. Goff is only 28 with 2 years on his contract after this season. I also believe Wilson would be better in a dome. 2 years behind Goff might give the league it's next super star and Goff could be a high paid backup for 2 years. I actually love Goff and hate the idea of Stroud or Levis and really hate the idea of Carr or jimmy g. But Wilson in a trade means at least an interesting back up

A couple weeks ago Josh Dobbs was signed to lions practice squad. Probably because lions need help dealing with running QBs. Fans are always clamoring for a dual threat QB. Fans actually wanted Detroit to use number two overall pick on Malik Willis. And earlier in the season wanted lions to use both number ones to trade to Texans for Bryce Young. Lions other back up is Nate sudfield. I'd rather have Wilson than spending a 5th on jerkovec or another QB this year.
After benching Wilson tonight down 13 with 3 minutes in the 3rd quarter for the 4th string QB he has to be done in new York. You can't get the locker room back after losing it the way he has. If the Jets would take a 5th or later then it's worth it to me.

Zach Wilsons combination of issues just isn't solvable. I'm sure with better OL, scheme, and time to learn on the bench, he can look better but he will always be a deeply flawed QB. You cannot fix his terrible instincts or the severe lack of poise he has.

Look at what Mike McDaniel has gotten out of Tua for most of the season besides the last 3 games. It is the QBs who can't execute consistently IN the system that put themselves IN conflict. Look at Baker Mayfield who looks like a million bucks who lives with his big plays but also dies when he can't stay in the pocket. Look at Lamar before this year in terms of his pocket passing. I'm NOT athletic at my age, but when I see an NFL QB missing throws that I could actually make consistently it is a problem, especially when he is missing them badly. I fully understand that defenders often force QB's to miss throws they should easily complete, and those misses are perfectly understandable. The bigger problem is it seems that Wilson isn't improving. NO quarterback plays perfectly, but the great ones are always striving to get better and DO get better. Mahomes and Allen are BOTH better QB's than they were a few years ago, especially Allen. Coaches can live with a talented but raw young QB, especially if they are coachable and show signs of steady improvement. When they fail to improve it appears that their ceiling is low enough for them to be a liability, which forces teams to ultimately move on from them.
