One thing that trips me out about this is that Russell Wilson is known around the league to be the type of person that will fly every receiver and tight end on the roster to Hawaii for a week during the off-season to party and practice. Or invite the entire offense to some Resort in California for a vacation/ work retreat where they study offense and get to know each other so to see that this is the end result of all those things it's kind of scary cuz it makes you think the work is there and the effort is there but the talent is gone.

So I recently came back to watching football -- I used to watch as a kid, but have since only watched hockey and soccer into adulthood -- and since I was a fan of Denver during the Elway days as a kid, I've been watching their games mostly. And then during Week 1, I saw that Russell Wilson had been traded to the team, and I thought 'oh, he's that guy that I heard about years ago that was the Seahawks superstar winning superbowls and whatnot -- wow, this should be an entertaining season to be a Broncos fan'. And then...yeah.
And since then, I've been entertained by all the talk about 'what the heck is going on with Wilson?', because yeah, I just assumed he was going to be a superstar. And actually, I've learned a lot about football, because since I didn't play much myself (beyond a couple of years in junior high), I never had much knowledge about what most positions need to be thinking/doing. So watching all these analyses of how Wilson is messing up his reads, etc., has been very illustrating for play design and execution to me, as a more-or-less complete newbie.
Anyways, this was also a very interesting analysis; really enjoyed the video!
I do hope Wilson can iron out whatever kinks he needs to, if only just because it must really suck as a human being to have such immense pressure on you and be in his current situation re. his numbers. And the defense who have been pouring out their sweat and blood and always losing. Hopefully they sort it out.

Russell Wilson somehow ranks 15th in attempts this year. Despite being the worst offense in 3rd down conversion %, 3 and outs, stalled drives.
And he is 41st in completion %. He came in talking "10-12 more years and 3-4 more Super Bowls" like he was Jesus himself or something. There has never been anything like it that I can think of as a sports fan. So many games for Seattle, especially in recent years, were decided by these throw it up and pray throws. Key drives that were extended by Lockett and DK bailing Russ out on very low percentage throws. The thing is, Russ “believes”. He thinks if he just throws up those prayers and believes, that it will work out. He’s like a kid finding out Santa isn’t real right now. He doesn’t understand why they aren’t winning. No other QB has had an easier time than Russ over his career in terms of the scrutiny he has faced, and there are still seemingly tons of believers out there that the problem lies solely with the coach and the team, and that he's every bit "Mr. Unlimited."

Now, he's on the receiving end of the worst trade AND the worst contract in NFL history. It really sucks as a Broncos fan. I almost cried when I heard the news of the trade, because I knew something along these lines was going to happen. As well as the insane doubling down with a contract extension (which also ended up being nightmarishly worse than even I imagined).
Drew Lock had a QBR above 50 in half of his 20 games he played and finished. Russell Wilson barely broke 50 once (51.9 in the opener). Drew got killed for being great 50% of the time. The media and the fanbase crucified him for his play. Russell Wilson was above average in only 10% of his games this season, and fans and some in the media are falling all over themselves to try and explain it away and continue to worship at Russ' feet. It's tragic just how much of a media slaughter he has endured due almost entirely to Russell Wilson's play and his effect on the team dynamic as a whole. He has proven uncoachable on the field, as well as in terms of handling the media and dealing with his teammates appropriately. It's just inane happy talk 24/7 from this guy while he makes major blunders constantly (which would be considered unacceptable at even the *high school level!*).

He ain't the worse but what is his job if he can't get Purcell off Russ chewing him out on the field a week before? What is he doing not managing the clock/timeouts and bringing up a coaching staff full of nepotism products save Ejiro Evero the DC? He's suppose to be an offensive wiz/playcalling specialist but he had to defer that job by week 10 to some bum named Klint Kubiak because he can't get it done.
Russ is on the hook long term so its ride or die with him regardless and the new ownership group (not the one who hired Hackett) knows it. He can definitely play subjectively better by next year given actual talents on offense come back again such as RB (very important) talents like Javonte Williams and actual tall targets like Tim Patrick along with Sutton. And an actual staff that can make good football decisions.

Nah. He might be a douche, but he was pretty damn good for a 7-8 year run. It wasn't until he became a full on diva, decided he didn't like getting hit in a collision sport, and totally stopped using his legs to scramble.
Since he can't see over his line, and refuses to use his legs to extend plays and gain yards, he isn't seeing the field. And even when he is, he sails passes all over the place.

Every quarterback - is a system quarterback at SOME level. Whether it is coaching and study they got and retained in highschool, college, or the NFL... who they have as coaches and teammates... role models... it all plays into who they become.
The QB role is highlighted, but the team around them is a HUGE part of their success.
IF a QB isn't retaining some of the knowledge and habits they picked up from previous coaches etc... it really highlights what level is system vs the greatness of the player themselves.
This is part of why we see players like Brady, Manning, Favre etc going to other teams to see if they can get one more ring (or more) after spending most of their careers with one organization. They want to prove it wasn't JUST the organization/system.

It was pretty easy to predict. Wilson's best part about his game was 1) His mobility, 2) Extending plays thanks to the mobility, and 3) His arm which could make all the throws. 1-3 all were finished after last season. He put on poundage and bulked up and lost the mobility (the Rams game in 2019 where Suh injured his ankle also caused some of that) and after the finger issue and some injuries piled up on his arm he lost that too.
Seattle completely fleeced Denver. Even when he came back at the end of 2021, it was Penny mowing through a bunch of bad rush Ds that caused Seattle to win games... but Wilson was completely off. Everyone graded Denver so highly and said they fleeced Seattle... yah what was that about? WOOPS.
Wilson always has been one of the worst pre-snap and pocket passers in the NFL. He can't read defenses or blitzes, he often took WAY too long to snap the ball (Seattle would routinely let the playclock go to 1 on designed passes), and he held onto the ball WAAAAY too long. He never was successful stepping up in the pocket either. When an all pro left tackle (Duane Brown) is visibly yelling at the QB on the field, that says a lot. What made Wilson good was when he had the athleticism and run game. Props to Seattle's coaching staff, but it's very obvious that the rumors that Schneider wanted to trade Wilson to the Browns for Allen and wanted Mahomes were 100% true.
So yah, the let Wilson cook thing? LOL... well when defenses figured out that Wilson just wanted to chuck deep balls 24/7 where he had his worst 4 game stretch in his career, it was pretty obvious Carroll said, "Yah no we're done with that...." And what did Wilson respond with? "I need more weapons and an offense line wah wah!" and it was obvious Seattle was done with him. And then I love all the analysts and dorks online screaming that "Wilson will finally have better weapons and an OL in Denver." WHAT!? Denver's OL was just as good as Seattle's (PFF magically bumped them up several slots after the trade lol, sure that wasn't a payoff), the receivers in Seattle are FAR superior, Fant was traded... and if Penny was healthy the runningback situation was just as good.
      What a joke.

  • @craigcampbell8560

Watching receivers run routes short of the sticks on 3rd down is one of the most maddening things I can watch. Running a curl that doesn't go deep enough is almost as bad. There's no excuse. If the defender is sitting at the line to gain, drive his ass past the line to gain before making your cut. He has no choice but to back up and run with you, or let you go, which probably isn't going to be his responsibility on 3rd down. When you push him past the sticks, make the catch and get tackled immediately, it's fine when you already have the first down. Unless it's something like a slant that is designed to get a few yards after the catch no matter what, push past the damn sticks! I can live with it if it turns into a scramble drill and the receiver ends up short of the line to gain when he makes the catch because he ran back toward the QB to give him somewhere to go with the ball. Still it amazes me to see "professional" receivers make this same stupid mistakes repeatedly when 12 year olds can easily be coached to run these routes properly.

He came here saying "10-12 more years and 3-4 more Super Bowls," and nothing he has said indicates he understands he is far and away the worst QB in football right now. The Broncos backfield has been an absolute dumpster fire this year, partially due to injuries (Javonte Williams and Chase Edmonds) but a lot just from constant benching and shuffling. Melvin Gordon was the co-number 1 going in, got pulled (too early and too often IMO) for fumbling, as if that was the source of the team's problems, and eventually was benched and then cut. And now they're starting Latavius Murray, who was on the couch at the start of the year. It's Adam Gase type stuff going on over there.
