How many of you have ever tried adding cream cheese to a fruit pie like this?

Is the cream cheese to stop the crust from getting soggy or is it for flavor? Or a combination of the two? I've never tried it but i do like the idea.

I used to make this pie back in the 70's. It is soooo good! My recipe called for an 8 oz. brick of cream cheese and to quarter the berries. I used to add a few drops of vanilla to the Cream Cheese to soften it up as well. You should add the rest of the gel from the pot to the pie too.

When I was a kid I was in love with the strawberry pie for my birthday in April. We had to wait for the strawberries to come into season here in California. Everything had to be strawberry for me! Now we can find strawberries year around in the grocery store! (Nations Hamburgers was a chain out west here they made breakfast and sandwiches too but those pies! )

I make my strawberry pies exactly the same way, but I stir in a little sugar in the cream cheese first! Either way you can't go wrong. My Momma taught me this one when I was a kid. Everybody went nuts and she always had to make at least 2 pies to have enough to go around! So, so, good. Thank you!

Dear Paula, I just about fell out of my chair when you mentioned Shoney’s Big Boy restaurant. My Brother Ron was the Head Cook at the Kips Big Boy here in Dallas, Texas for over 25 years. Yes, the Buffet Breakfast Bar was Wonderful and my Favorite was the Hot Fudge Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream, Hot Fudge Topping, Whipped Cream and Cherry 🍒 on Top. Thank you for mentioning this Memory. I watch you every morning to see what y’all are cooking so I can get ideas. This Strawberry Pie looks Scrumptious. Love You from Dallas, Texas. Happy Cooking Chef and Wishing you a Blessed Day.

When I lived in Minnesota, we had a product called Danish Junkett. It was bright red and slightly clear. It was richer than a jello. You would make a batch of that up and chill it and add fresh cool strawberries. A dollop of whipped cream on top and you were all set. The cream cheese on the bottom sounds like a great addition. Wonder if they still make Strawberry Danish Junkett.....

You mentioning Shoney's brought back memories. When I was a teenager after church the church youth went there at times and when my daughter was a toddler we used to go once or twice a week for the breakfast bar and sometimes my Mom would meet us there. I saw a Shoney's when I visited my brothers in South Carolina in 2011. Strawberry pie my Momma made and I believe she made her crust from scratch and sometimes fresh picked strawberries. When I worked as a waitresss at a family owned rib house when I was 20 or 21 many years ago, the owner paid my Mom to make strawberry pies for him to sell.

The first time I ate this pie was 1968. My ex-mother-in-law made it when I went to meet them. (She crushed the berries with a potato masher, added red food coloring (just for aesthetics), and vanilla extract just prior to taking the filling off the stove). She also stood the ripest strawberries whole (after coring them) atop the cream cheese. This pie is so good I believe it was the reason I married her daughter. (Pie's still remarkably good, but the marriage wasn't.) Enjoyed watching.

I've been a restaurant cook since I was 15 years old I'm in my sixties now the one thing that I learned over the years when it comes to any kind of cream pie chocolate vanilla coconut Eden lemon meringue when you have any kind of pie like that your best bet to a not get a soft crust or watery crust how it turns after a while is put 1 to 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar on the bottom and on the sides of the prebaked pie crust and what that does is it actually creates a barrier between the liquid and the crust under pie crust actually stays crusty so to speak...

I have tha Shony"s recipe for their Starwbeery pie. I can send it if you don't have. Back in the "70"s my mom asked for the recipe and they gave it to her. She made a couple times a year. We all loved it.

I worked for the Shoney’s Big Boy in College Park Georgia, in the early 70’s. We used fresh, uncooked strawberries with a jarred glaze, made at the Shoney’s commissary.

Yes, very few left now. I worked at the Shoneys here in Savannah for many years, 1986-2003, so I know the fudge cake and strawberry pie all too well. I waited on Paula's son, Bobby, for quite a while until I left. He offered me a job working at the Lady and Sons. That was 20 years ago, and my life has taken some strange turns in that time.

I know. She’s always rushing to try stuff before it’s cooled, and here we have the perfect opportunity and she doesn’t taste it...Go figure. She did say, however, they’re having it for their “supper dessert.”
