Donkey Kong 64 was his first 3D adventure and was one of the earliest videos on my channel. As a kid my mom quite literally told me I couldn’t play Donkey Kong 64 because it was “broken” so I never tried it but in reality she just wanted to complete it at 100% without me deleting or messing up shit and years later I finally understood why lmao

Yeah, the game is broken in many ways, so many glitches and stuff that can be both helpful and frustrating when trying to complete it. Entire save files can erase themselves at times, just for them to return upon reset.

Because it's horrifically, embarrassingly cringey. I showed it to a close friend who'd never seen it just last week and he was in physical pain sitting through it. It's so, SO, *S O* bad.
Some people have not learned to embrace corny, campy wholesomeness, instead seeing it as cringeworthy.
It's a cool product of its time but it gets fucking grating when it's played 1000000000 times from unoriginal memes

This is my favorite game of all time. Played the hell out of it as a kid and got 101% twice.
The characters are so memorable. Its a shame how Lanky, Chunky and Tiny seem to be forgotten.

@@trumpisaclown7280 I know its alot and its not a perfect game by any stretch. Id probably make some other design choices for some areas/collectables but as a Kid i was fascinated with the exploration this game has to offer as well as the characters.
Hey, at least Lanky and Tiny got to make appearances in later games during the 2000’s. Chunky’s one and only appearance is in DK64. Guess Chunky really is dead, isn’t he?
What I heard was that those kings never came back to other titles was because they were created by Rareware employees, therefore making them “spin off” characters in a Nintendo owned franchise. So once Nintendo sold their share in Rare they also gave the rights to those characters away since Rareware was a 2nd party Nintendo development company.
@@patronboy777 Diddy, Dixie, Cranky, K. Rool were all created by rare and they still show up nowadays in various forms. The reason these guys stopped showing up is probably the same reason Kiddy Kong didn't show up again. They're unpopular and/or redundant characters.

Oh yeah, he talked about that in an update video. Here's hoping he recovers and is back to his bearded self. Not very often you hear about a condition with the words blue and rubber in it.

Imagine if Zelda had 5 different colors of Korok seeds (totaling 4,500), that were only obtainable by 5 different characters in the same world.
Sounds great to me, but I’ll probably be in the minority.
I don't think that the scope is comparable. Finding koroks in BoTW is way tougher just due to them actually being blended into the world by design. Also DK64 has a very simple geometric level design bc of hardware limitations that makes it easy to look for the collectables. It is still a lot of unnecessary padding, obviously.
It's not as bad as it sounds. (DK64) All 900 Koroks however...no, thanks.
It wouldn't even be much of an issue if you could just swap characters on the fly, but so much of this game is just running into a collectible you cannot collect or a switch you cannot press as your current character, backtracking to the Kong barrel to switch to the character you need, and then backtracking AGAIN to the first spot. It's just not fun.
And so many of the Kong's abilities are superfluous and make the game unnecessarily convoluted, because all they amount to in the end is another version of pressing a character-specific switch to progress.
RARE was really knocking those games out of the ballpark back in the day.🦍🍌
Even though the N64 couldn’t compete with the PlayStation, it would have sold even worse if it weren’t for Rare.
@@supermariofan03 Well, at least it didn't have loading screens every single level and the cartridges were much more durable. I mean, let's be real here, the only reason the playstation was more successful was because the games were much cheaper than the cartridges and WAAAY cheaper if you pirated them.
The playstation had some pretty good games (Metal Gear and Symphony of the Night to name a few) and better sound quality though, I'll give it that.

As a major Hip Hop head I personally think the DK Rap is incredible.
The subtle switch up on the production for every Kong & their personality shining through for each of their verses is great.
It definitely harkens back to classic 80's Run DMC/Beastie Boys style of Rap, which brings the cheese factor in full effect [especially if you are younger and listening to it for the first time in the 2000's] but that's part of it's charm!
I love DK64 so much. I know it has it's issues but it's just so much fun to me and that's all that matters.
There should be more videos appreciating Donkey Kong 64. I remember being excited for this more than any other game at the millennium. Say what you like about the collectibles, you can’t deny Rare’s efforts in making this an impressive game of its time, jam packed with colourful levels and cool content.

This game gets way too much flack now. I think the variety of characters, for the time, was impressive and the bananas (main collectable) are implemented around them are done well.
I agree, I honestly bought the Jungle Green N64 Bundle recently solely for this game, it was my first Console I ever had, and this game meant so much to my childhood.
I love DK64, really feel it’s either a love it or hate it game; the good old days of Rareware and N64. Really overdue for a sequel, a remake and more representation from the characters introduced in the game.

DK64 was the start of Rare's slide into terrible games honestly. While some of their other titles aged like fine wine or cheese, DK64 aged like a diarrhea out in the sun tbh

949 isn't the total number of Banana Coins in the game, I must sadly inform Jirard. There are 977. There's a hidden Rainbow Coin in Fungi Forest that brings the total to 974, and there are three out of bounds hidden ones. The hidden Rainbow Coin is hiding in the grass, in between a mushroom and the Tag Barrel by the Mill/Water Wheel area. It was discovered in 2016.

I mean, it's okay missing out on something you cannot actually see, took 17 years and a computer program to find. Once you know it's there it's pretty obvious because the Kongs suddenly change height when they go over the dirt mound..... but the show is The Completionist and he was going for all the coins... Hate to be that guy but it's not yet completed.

This was what pushed me into loving video games. This was my introduction into not only story based video games but an introduction into what video games could be. I wouldnt be the person I am today if it wasnt for this game
This is still one of my favorite 3D platformers as well. I would love a remaster/port to the Switch with how well it still holds up.
You don't really need to backtrack that much. Just do a run of the game, and then do a second run in which you sweep the stages with everything unlocked. I only say this cos the video kinda sounded like you kept going back and forth as you progressed trying to get everything in one run, which is just inefficient really

I mean, he was right in many design choices. I still think the game has a lot of good things done that make it stand out, but I couldn't help but feel a headache while feeling like I had chores to do with some collectables.
I feel this game would do great as a 5 multiplayer game, and with new minigames instead of repeated ones, along with interconnected worlds like Sunshine
The only times you would really need to back track to a previous level is after you get all the kongs (around the 3rd level so you only need to go back to two levels) and for like one golden banana that requires a ability from the level after it. If you focus on doing one kong at a time and only switch when you need to for opening a path for a different kong or when you got everything for that kong it's not nearly as bad as he makes it sound
Okay I know Jirard played his history about the controller as kind of a sarcastic manner, but that is a really cool bit of completionist trivia. Flows back to the love to DKC2 in some ways
Replayed it last year, got 101%, and LOVED it! The characters, worlds, and soundtrack are all top-notch!~
Still freakin amazing that so much from this specific game was referenced in Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and King K. Rool’s moveset in Smash

Completing this game is a massive chore…but at the same time it’s addicting because I love the world and the Rareware charm.

Man I’ll never forget getting the DK64 Nintendo bundle when I was a kid! I sunk many many hours into this game and to this day it is still one of my all time favorites!! Oh how I wish for an HD remake!!

DK Rap is like an advanced society that we haven't discovered yet
Collectathons weren't really my thing growing up, but now that I'm older and got into some metroidvanias I think I get the appeal. Getting into games like that without a guide and trying to find everything the game has to offer just by exploring is definitely something I can appreciate in the age of the internet.
My favorite game of all time, this is an episode I’ll be rewatching over and over.

One of my favorite games of all time, new to the show and I’ve been dying to hear the review! Love it
Man I love this game to pieces growing up. As I got older it saddened me to see how much people seemed to dislike it. I always got so much enjoyment how large the worlds were at the time and the collectathon method just made me explore every nook and cranny of the worlds so the collectables were never too much for me. I also loved having to play as five different kongs each with their own abilities and power ups (though why make Tiny and not bring Dixie in for the game?). The bosses are also a lot of fun. The mine-kart sections and barrel blast sections with DK are also so much fun. I also like how you don't have to worry about drowning in the water in this game; say what you will but I think I would have hated Gloomy Galleon if I had to worry about air.
My only gripe about the game is the need for those Rareware and Nintendo coins to get the final key to get to the final boss. I could gt the Rareware just fine but I always struggled with the original DK arcade game. I replayed the game in 2009, 10 years after the release of the game, and I was finally able to beat it to get that Nintendo coin and beat the game.
I think the reason why collecting is so great in this world is because the attention to detail in literally ever single aspect which you just can't get enough of. The music is just perfect everywhere. Every character feels unique, even the enemies all are very unique. And every environment is different. And then what I like most is the challenging aspects of the game, because you just know which things are hard and if you beat them you feel great.
I never got into this game, but I used to watch my friend play it almost every day, and we NEVER skipped the DK Rap. :)

This game will always be a treasure to me. But I can’t tell you how crushed I was when during a long awaited replay I only got a golden banana for beating “Donkey Kong.” Realizing I had to do it again for the Nintendo coin just about killed me.
one of my most favourite titles from the N64 era, really miss playing this as a kid. I spent hours on it. Really hope they drop it on the switch online service

This game is both the high and low point of collect-a-thon games. So much to do, too much to do.
The beauty of such collectathons is in always having something to do, you beat the game but still want to mess around in the world without starting a new game, trying to do it all in a limited time kills it
If I ever play Donkey Kong 64 for a third time, I am absolutely completing it for a third time.
Screw your finish it rating, I will always complete it entirely regardless of how many times I play it. I love every aspect of Donkey Kong 64.
As much hell as this game gets(admittedly for good reason), I love this game. It's one of my all time favorites. No other game brings on more nostalgia for me and to this day I enjoy playing it.

I remember getting this game with the N64 bundle.
I loved this game and that beginning song I found myself humming and singing for months if not years afterwards.
I remember playing through it for a second time when my now ex wife told me it reminded her of banjo kazooie which I had never played at that point.
Thank you for redoing these games Jirard, I loved the original episodes but I find revisiting old things can give us a new perspective on things.

I've watched this back to back like 4 times. Takes me back to the good ol days. I went crazy over kong 64. Thought I may have been one of the only ones from back in the day that played til I watched this. I gotta dig it out now and replay

DK64 is by far in my top two games for the N64. Anytime I feel like pulling out the system, it’s to play this or Paper Mario.

Super Mario 64 May have been my first game ever, but to this day DK64 is my favorite collectathon of all time. I love the artstyle, the personality of the writing, how clearing each world feels like solving a puzzle one piece at a time with each character, the atmosphere of each world is so unique with the music, and just the overall game feel.
I’ve never 100% completed it but I have played it over and over again. It’s the one game I genuinely want a remake for.
Maybe I’m biased because this was my favorite game throughout all of my childhood and it’s still up there now, but there is no game that deserves an hd remake more than this one. Why did Microsoft buy Rare 😖
The multiplayer in this game was pretty fun as well!
I played this game when I was still having trouble doing much in Banjo Kazooie, just to give you an idea of my understanding of platforming and exploring. Needless to say I never completed this game, but I really liked it and was struck with awe about the world and traveling around, regardless of never really getting anywhere. XD

Was the intro a callback to the Mario Allstars pack ? That gag was my favorite from the old show and what got me hooked before I got to "know" you. The "but beardman" joke was charming and fun but I'm glad to have grown with the channel and see you're still doing the content you did in new and exciting ways. You guys rock.

It just so happens that I too have recently completed this grand masterpiece. In know completing it was tough, but that chapter of my childhood came to a close, and it was DEFINITELY worth it.

The bonus ending wasn't auditions for this game; it was an audition for a non-existant GameCube sequel. If you look closely, the sign has the word "auditions" plastered over a picture of a dolphin, and Dolphin was the in-development code name for the GameCube.
That's the first time I've heard of such a thing, and now I cry from being denied such glory.

I remember coming home from school on a friday, running into my room and turning on my n64 this gave me some nostalgia for sure I never beat this game as a kid because I was only 7 when it came out so I got stuck a lot but I loved playing it. This was a nice blast from the past
