      @Erikthedood ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@daniebelle22 Tbh don’t even know what you’re talking about, combat in KH3 is actually solid if you’ve actually played the game post-patch; it wasn’t even bad before (just flawed, like most vanilla KH releases) but now with REMIND it’s definitely 2FM-tied or above level from a combat perspective if you know what you’re doing. And what; Sora felt like a “straight up child” in KH3?! What?! Did we even play the same game?! He learned multiple life lessons throughout the Disney worlds, & said goodbye to childhood in Hundred Acre Wood, acknowledging his connection with his childhood was fading as he was growing older. We finally saw him acknowledge the “my friends are my power” thing was an insecurity he had against his self worth (he felt worthless without them so used it as a coping mechanism), he straight up told Xehanort to his face he wasn’t a real leader and what a real leader should be after literally beating his ass and pushing him to near death. He literally sacrificed himself multiple times to bring all of his friends back and literally faded out of existence for doing so; even when he knew it would cost him everything. Like what, “childish?!” If that doesn’t show his maturity and growth, I don’t know what does. Also, no FF characters? Did you even play REMIND? I don’t care if you prefer KH2, but you don’t have to lie on KH3 lmao. That was all so bad faith. Whatever.

      The problem with kh3, is the fact, that it is so different from the other games.
      The worlds is not as magical, way too many, and long boring cutscenes. No story. And the combat is by far, the worst of any kingdom hearts game. No disney bosses, and the worlds, with few exceptions just feels empty and boring.
      It took me 2 years to finish kh 3, and I have never played it since, and got no interest in going back to it. All the remixes, i will play again though.

    I completed this about a week ago for the first time. It was my first time playing through Final Mix, so all the extra content was a new and exciting experience for me. The extra cutscenes adding onto the story, the rebalanced gear, the fun I had with Limit Form (and the amount of times it saved my ass), the exploration into the Cavern of Remembrance and the ensuing battles against the Data XIII, the delightful diversions that were the Mushroom XIII (except you, VIII; you know what you did), and then the final challenge against Lingering Will that put all my time and effort to the ultimate test. The relief and elation I felt at dealing that final blow and seeing the last of the trophies pop off starting with the Lingering Will defeat, the last of the journal trophies, and finally the Platinum itself is a feeling that I will treasure always. First Platinum and completion of 2023 and boy, what a great way to start off the year. I've always championed Kingdom Hearts 2 as my favorite game of all time and after the 75 hour journey through Final Mix, it's nice to be reminded why.

    I will never forget seeing the KH2 cover for the first time. I was in a rental store.. kinda like Blockbuster but not… and it was like a magnet had drawn me to the game. With the anime art style I had never seen at the time (I was a kid), seeing it combined with Disney characters I knew and loved, and seeing that it was available on the PS2 (a console I was lucky to have at the time), I knew I had to play it. I had no previous knowledge of the game and didn’t even know there was a first one. But from the first time I booted it up, I was hooked. Ever since then I’ve played almost every single KH game and have loved every second. But nothing will beat the tear-jerking nostalgia that KH2 holds for me. The combat has so much variety and room for experimentation, the visuals are stylized and striking, the OST is one of the best I've ever heard, all the boss fights are amazing tests of reflexes and pattern recognition, and the story is simultaneously ridiculously far up its own ass and passionately genuine, I find it next to impossible to not love this game.

    For everyone wondering about the quality of this game's story and plot, most agree that it is a lot better and more interesting. The first game is the bare bones "friends make you strong and light is stronger than darkness, good is stronger than evil" and some slight hints with the theme of growing up. The characters are what make it passable, and even then it is very generic. In Kingdom Hearts 2, things are not as surface level. The entire plot and game surrounds the idea of the nobodies, specifically with Roxas and the themes of identity, belonging, purpose, desire, etc. Almost all the worlds in this game have aspects of these varying themes, which works to make the organization and nobodies more sympathetic. It is definitely Sora's best character arc in my opinion, going from dismissing their existence to begging them to change, all because of his connection to them. These themes are not very obviously shown through these worlds, unlike the first game, but that happens when your story is more complicated than bread and butter. You are much better able to connect the dots when you have a clearer idea of the nobodies.
    Here's a game world's overview for these themes:
    Mulan- Her entire story centers around identity and purpose, trying to find who she really is and where she truly belongs in the world.
    Beauty and The Beast- He is struggling with his identity as "the beast" vs what he really wants, what he really desires. He is seeking emotion that people say he cannot feel or find.
    Olympus- Hercules is struggling with his identity as a hero, it's killing him, so he thinks about a hero's purpose. He made a mistake and is questioning who he really is and what he really wants.
    Pirates- This one doesn't connect as well in its main story, but the connection to the nobodies is quite obvious with the curse. A bunch of people have been cursed, and they are desperately seeking their normal lives back. They want to be human again. The curse has taken away what made them people, as a result they find shelter and belonging with each other and share their torment together.
    Agrabah- This one is less so connected like the last. It mainly has to do with Iago in terms of identity and purpose. He doesn't want to be the bad guy anymore. He wants to find where he really belongs.
    Halloweentown- Jack struggles with his identity and purpose for Halloween, wanting to try out Christmas. Very cut and dry. The second visit is much clearer with a puppet desperately searching for something that's missing inside, a heart. It wants to feel emotions but cannot. It ends up hurting others in that search, but can you really blame it? The puppet is trying to find the emotion to understand its actions in the first place; it wasn't given a choice.
    Lion King- Simba struggles with his identity and purpose as the true king. He needs to go back to where he belongs, much like Roxas did.

    • @NikiYKN
      @NikiYKN ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is that, unlike other games, you have to really stretch it to get most of these interpretations, and I don't think that's a sign of it being "more complex".
      Like, Iago is not really struggling to find where he belongs as much as he's being intimidated by Jafar into tricking the others, and in the end he chooses to do the right thing for the people he considers proper friends regardless of the consequences. That has nothing to do with the Nobodies and the themes surrounding them, to say it has to do with themes of "identity", "purpose" and "belonging" is pretty forced.
      Same goes for Mulan or the Beast. You could argue the sense of duality in their character arcs that come from their struggles with identity and purpose mirrors Sora and Roxas in a way, but it never really goes beyond that, because that duality is never explored much to begin with. Sora doesn't really have much of a character arc himself until maybe the end of 3D-3, he deals with different stuff in different games, but it's never something as significant as "trying to find his identity", his duality with Roxas is more about the fact that they're technically the same person, and he now has to face that guy, his "other half", but he never really deals with that in a deeper level than acknowledging Roxas' existence, fighting him, and later trying to get him to live his own life. Roxas' arc, meanwhile, is more so about finding where he belongs than who he is as a person. The Nobodies and Replicas are beings "not meant to exist", they're shells without heart or emotions, people who are "fake". That's perfeclty shown in CoM through Naminé being a "fake Kairi" in Sora's memories, but making a promisse to develop a real relationship with him at the end, not as Kairi, but as herself. Making real connections since, like Sora, she deserves her own life. That's what Riku Replica, Roxas, Xion, and the Nobodies in general are all about, and it has not really anything to do with Beast learning to be a better person, and choosing between the Rose(his past self) or Belle(his new self), or Mulan not fitting in and choosing to fight for her father's sake despite the role expected out of her. Basically, the characters in the Disney worlds struggle with who they are, where they fit in the world, and what they want to be. The Nobodies struggle with whether or not they belong at all, whether or not they deserve to exist, if their life has any meaning, since they don't even have hearts.
      I'd say KH2's real story is about "closure". That's a theme you can actually see in every world, aswell as the main story. It works perfectly as the end of the 1-CoM-2 trilogy, it's just not the best when viewed as a individual story.

  • @Rixec2
    @Rixec2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Actually, the story - while maybe not as intertwined in its elements - is brilliant for its themes and subtlety. Take Halloween Town. It may not seem to be connected to the main story, but it does connect to the themes. The Experiment in the second part was made - i.e. born - without a heart, and it sought out something to fill that void, much like the Nobodies.
    And that's really what makes so many connect with the story. Plenty of people I know with depression felt that sense of emptiness, that they didn't really exist, and they related so hard and found strength in the story, as well as LGBTQ people who really resonated with the strong friendships and sense of identity and found themselves in them, along with being rejected for something beyond their control by others.
    Even Roxas at the start hits so hard, with his section having themes of friendship, identity, life, melancholy, death, and rebirth. He is essentially living out the last days of his life without knowing it and he's doing normal things with the people close to him just as any of us would do. It was a down to earth story that slowly turned into a tragic mystery.
    Kingdom Hearts may not always make sense, but the themes always hit home.

    KH2 will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only was it the first game I ever played in the series, but it was because of this game that I had made my first friend in high school. He came over to my house one day with KH2 and I was blown away by how amazing it was. He let me borrow if after that day, and I loved it from start to finish. And since then, thats how I became the KH fan I am today.

    It was my older brother who got me into KH (and many more, such as LOZ OOT). I had never heard of it, and I wasn't into any games made by Square. But I would watch him play for hours. I thought it was kinda fun that these cool looking characters were interacting with Disney characters. When I finally started playing, I was hooked. I didn't really understand the story and I kept getting stuck and asking my brother for help or watching him go through that certain part of the game so I knew what to do. We didn't always bond or get along, but we did with these games.
    He doesn't play many games anymore, and I've moved quite far from home now so we dont really talk much. But playing/hearing the classic soundtracks of KH 1 and 2, always reminds me of being a kid hanging, out with my big bro again

    Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix is one of my top most favorite games of all time and seeing this review has me wanting to replay the game to completion for the 5th time. I love the gameplay to death and it was because of this game that I started to explore other action RPG games (which led me to Souls games). This is one of those action RPGs where the deep and satisfying gameplay (atleast when on Proud or Critical difficulty) absolutely carries the somewhat clunky paced story, plus ofc the beautiful ost and visual magic well known by Square in the PS2 era. Also even when the plots at their most convoluted some of the characters still carry over the emotion well.

    No matter what anyone says the ending of KH2 will always make me teary eyed. Tbh it probably should’ve ended there but it is what it is. Just the music and the flash to roxas and namine is so freaking effective

    • @Erikthedood
      @Erikthedood ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could’ve ended there (just like kh1 or kh3), but there were so many unanswered mysteries and or plot lines that even vanilla kh2 was opening up that it clearly was never meant to be the last game. I’m glad it continued after that, even if some people don’t care about KH anymore because they stopped trying to engage with it.

    • @36inc
      @36inc 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      nah if it had ended there roxas and namine would still be trapped even though they clearly developed their own heart. 3 was absolutely necessary and id say bbs was too. 1 is the closest but even the original teased chain of memories so nomura was already on his gigabrained super sentai logic way to making it a whole thing. its only confusing if you dont have access to all the games- its less obvious about it but it essentially works like any givin persona game- heartless are shadows- nobodies are pure memory the context that heart uses to sow connections- that ultimately allow sora to grow up. at the end of the day the confusion is just proper noun encumbrance- theres alot of whose and whys to get lost in but at the end of the day soras motivation is his friends- its his biggest asset and the reason he doesnt fall to depression (heartless ansem kh1) APATHY (XEMNAS in kh2)or self worth (kh3)
      the other characters just facilitate how he learns them. or rather soras always overwhelmed too so naturally they overwhelm you. mimics being a kid pretty nicely.

    Firstly: 18:28 - nice
    Secondly: I gotta say - KH2 Gummi ships were my favorite by far. I didn’t even use the donut strategy, and yet the flow and momentum and on-rails spectacle was great. I ADORED mission 3 where you have full control over the camera. It felt ridiculously satisfying to finally get the S(plus) ranks and get that mode that enabled every medal to just gravitate towards you.
    It’s a feature I rarely see talked about in a positive light. I know it’s not the main focus, but when I was younger it never felt… like… pace-breaking. I really enjoyed it ^^
