    Detroit Diesels will ALWAYS fire up providing no obvious holes in the side or bent/destroyed internals. Hell, it may just fire with those issues depending on the severity. Might run away, or grenade shortly after, but they don't need much to cheech away. Love Ole 2 stroke Detroit's. Easily one of the best engines ever built.

      Same for the 850 Etec Rotax, i got an 8v92 silver turbo out back, 2 strokes are more durable and the detroit with their anti-friction bearings allows them to come online quick.

    Love the 2 strokes! I'm a Cat (power generation) guy now but I worked for 10 years for a Kohler dealer, Kohler used a lot of Detroits in the gen sets. I've serviced everything from 4-53's to 20v149's and then the newer series 60's and MTU/Detroits. You are correct about hospitals and critical care these 2 strokes sense power loss and are online in 3-4 seconds. Can't do that with 4 strokes but they still have to meet the 10 second deadline.
    I would check and see if the start leads from the gen controller are shorted together and trying to start the unit when in auto position. It will typically be only be 2 small gauge wires that normally run to an ATS (automatic transfer switch) for starting but if shorted together it will try to start the unit when in auto.

    I worked on those old Detroit 2 cycle diesel genesis at Suffolk county water Authority on Long Island. There is probably nothing major wrong with the generator. Sometimes it’s only a matter of cleaning up the selector switches and flashing the exciter field. Or installing a more modern regulator. These old beasts are very hardy. If it has brushes just spray some contact cleaner on the slip rings as it’s running. If it’s brushless spray cleaner in at the prime mover. I still have books on the alternator.

    I had to laugh about the fuel consumption of that 12v, it brought back some memories from 2001-2003. I worked in a industrial gas plant which had brought in 3 gensets to supplement 3.5 to 4 megawatts of power needed to make up power shortage from contracted power from grid. We had a 5500 gallon diesel fuel tank to feed the gen sets which was on a 2 and a half day fill schedule, at the time it was cheaper to burn that much fuel than buy the extra power from the power company.(thanks to Enron)

    1,500 RPM for 50 Hz, 1,800 RPM for 60 Hz AC. It's a good thing that you checked the racks, before starting. Governed engines are at full throttle at rest. If the racks gets stuck open, you've got yourselves a "runaway"!!😮😮The only thing that would shut it down, is to cut off fuel, or, a CO2 fire extinguisher in the air intake. I would LOVE to have found something like this, in this good condition. What a find!

    0-1800 rpm in 2 seconds, child's play. I was working in an industrial plant and we had IR mobile compressors with 6-71's in them for emergency plant air. You want to see sketch ? How about at 3am on a -10* night and I get a call of air dropping in plant. I needed to fire up a couple of those 6-71's so I hop in my shop truck with the big 24v hot start mounted in the back. With the full amps off the hot start feeding the batteries and half a can of either in her I hit the button and that Detroit goes right up against the governor like now, 2250rpm with ice hanging off the exhaust manifold. I can say I was beating feet around the corner of the building but those old 6-71's took a beating and kept on ticking. Amazing.

    Great barn find! Be careful with generator end as you don't know what is wrong with it. before you run it again drive at least 4, 6 foot rebar into ground and wire to frame of genset. This will protect anyone on or near machine. With the manuals find the exciter / field circuit and disconnect it. This will prevent it from making really big power. Even with field disconnected generator can still be self exited. Probably 150 volts. Still enough to kill!. Make sure all stator connections are disconnected and safe. Biggest danger in old generators is short between phases or to ground. Not sure which governor, probably a hybrid. It can be electric or hydraulic or a hybrid. If its straight hydraulic there will be able to adjust its speed within a certain range. some of them had a warm up / cool down solenoid that gives an idle speed. Hybrids use servo motor to adjust speed...
    If its electric governor it will be controlled from inside main panel that drives servo motor, generally these will have an inductive pickup.

    • @Ol2Stroker
      @Ol2Stroker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Damn Rod that's a ton of great info! I sadly had to give this genhead back. Is there an easy way to find the field circuit without a book? I have another vid coming up... I assume the rebar is the most important part?

    • @LichaelMewis
      @LichaelMewis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rod you sound really knowledgeable about gensets. I had a 15KW 1800 rpm industrial generac and sold it for a 25KW commercial 1800rpm generac. Both natural gas. The 15kw had several issues from bad control board to bad ground that I was able to resolve myself. Once I sold it and acquired the 25kw I connected it to my home myself except for the ATS I hired an electrician. The unit puts out approximately 104 amps @ 240VAC single phase. I use a "Sense" meter on it so I can monitor my system in realtime remotely. It's strong enough to run my entire home whrv everything on , even strong enough to charge my EV which pulls ~45 amps. I run for a week straight during Hurricane Ida. Anyway I just wanted to say that I love generators, and working on them and getting to know them. I'd probably enjoy speaking with you about the subject.

      @@Ol2Stroker I've seen lots of wore out governors, but I've never come across one of those with a malfunction that a little adjustment could not cure. My Dad got a 40ft. wooden shrimp lugger from my Uncle once. That boat had a 271 on a 4:1 marine gear. It was a nice cypress hull. He could catch a lot of shrimp with that rig. Those engines were used on welding machines often. The only flaw on that engine was the crankshaft design. There is no supporting main between the two rod journals.. You'd see broken cranks because of this.
