- We are finally back on the Michigan 55A loader that has been abandoned for over 14 years. A tree fell on this way back when and knocked off the exhaust and water got down the cylinders and seized it up. Tune in today as we rebuild the 3-53 Detroit Diesel in this and see once and for all - can we resurrect it for good? Will it Start?

injector dont sound like it set up correct watch (danger marine) there a mechanic in Australia that does a how to set up and tune those engine it really good

It does my heart good to see you using the correct tool for installing the rings. Now, if you would just stop using a claw hammer when working on equipment, that would really make me feel good. I sold tools to mechanics for 40 years so if I rag on you, it's just from habit.

Plan on future leaks with cork gaskets!! Set the idle so you DON'T have to keep starting it!!

Being honest, maybe I might be a bit excited at first but as you just went through a lot of work, why try to make this rig work without the amounts of oils and other to make sure nothing fails in the start?? Not ragging ya, but its a bit of a let down

You made a nice job of that, you probably didn't need to get the pistons fitted but it gave you confidence in the job and getting the replacement head was a wise choice. I'm retired now been around Detroits all my life and I can't remember the first one I put together,45 years ago at least but I guess I would have been more nervous than you.
And just importantly, congratulations on baby. Now there's a different adventure. Thanks for your time mate and all the best for the future.

Great video, my grandfather owned a 1963 Michigan 75iii. It still runs and operates today. One of the loudest machines in our town when we have it running

No, Sheboygan,WI I came across it while looking for parts for my 85 series.
Old retired diesel mechanic here, worked on many 71 series and later the 92 series Detroits. The school I attended back in the early `70s taught us that the reason these engines were made so that you could swap the blower side to side and turn the head around, swap the cam and blank shaft side to side was so that you could reverse the direction of rotation of the engines; very important in marine engines. A twin diesel setup in a boat or ship has one engine rotating clockwise and the other engine counter clockwise, to prevent the ship crabbing at an oblique. The props pull the same direction yes, but they rotate in opposition. If you swap that head, blower, cam ect, your engine will rotate in the opposite direction.
After watching you fiddling around out in the snow, I'm reminded of why I don't live in Michigan and I am very thankful that my folks left Racine, Wisconsin in 48. You have a beautiful state for about 6 months of the year.
A little late here,but have got s 3-53 in an old army crane we still use.. runs like dog shit,but always does with a snort of anesthesia..im not gonna pull the valve cover cause im hoping itll just die...i dont really care for 2 strokes.. all they do is make noise and go nowhere...but theyll do it with practically anything in the tank .. maybe someday ill learn to appreciate what they were/are but as of now, they're nothing but a boat anchor to me🤣...but anyway 👍👊👊
Watching you start this with the valve cover on with (no vice grips) on the rack and no emergency cover for the intake in case of a run-a-way

Always have a way to shut off the air to a diesel engine on first start or when starting after a turbo failure where oil got into the air to air cooler. A board works for that.

ive had goodluck bleeding at the injectors..crack yhem and when they drip tighten them up.. and prefill those fuel filters 😎😎👍👍
Your supposed to take the engine out when you rebuild it you can't even see what the cylinder walls look like that way you sure wouldn't be rebuild my engine for me and if you do get it running what's saying that it won't blow up on you or your doing it just to get rid of it really quickly I know several tricks to get an engine running just to make a buck on but I am not that way and I don't go ripping people off that way

A long time ago, when I was in the service, one of the guys said he had worked in an automotive garage, and they used telescoping radio antennas to push new rope seals in the upper half of rear mains that were still in the vehicle. Take care.

Do not run multigrade oil use only 30 or 40 weight engine oil. I learned that from the old guys. They said they will leak oil more if you use multistage oil and everything I do it leaks more. For some reason
Nope not at all 15 40 for diesels specially designed to battle the build ups from happening
@mchl8 you have no idea about these 2 cycle engines. They did not have multi grade oil back then. The multigrade oil was developed for the high pressure fuel systems in the newer engine designs.
@@andrewtiefry5990 wat do I not know or aware of? The multi grade pils are not just designed for high pressure systems. Multi grade oils were produced long long before high pressure oil systems were even thought of. So come again?
@mchl8 last one I own several 2 stroke detroits and have several really good master 2 stroke detroit masters tell me the exact info of what to use and why in a 2 stroke detroit. And it works why I have no idea. They just leak less and there is nothing clean about a 2 stroke detroit your going to change the oil one way or another. Either your going to add oil and it leaks or change the the oil and it leaks.

I can't believe that you would start the machine and then try to move the machine without ever checking the fluids and then wonder "what's that sound?"! LOL! That was the sound of a $2000.00 hydraulic pump starving for oil.

I always put rubber hose on the rod bolts when installing pistons and jugs. Learned the hard way by tagging the crank once - ouch
