I knew a guy who had a 3408 in a KW, and that thing ran sweet! That frame was FULL with that engine. The only one I ever saw in a truck. I was working at a Cat dealer at the time.
On Thursday TwinStick Garage posted a great video on the new hubs and brakes from ConMet. He is fitting them to his Smokey and the Bandit tribute truck the 1979 Kenworth conventional. It is a terrific tutorial on the latest in hub technology and also how air brakes work. Educational for sure. He is out of Ardrossen Alberta Canada which is a short run east of Edmonton. You might want to consider an upgrade to the best technology available today.
As an old retired driver, i spent many a day and night running a ex hood Pete, this thing sounds amazing, i can imagine leaving Cal with a load of produce headed east with all the chickin lites lit and BILL MAc on the all night radio show, and that Big KittY purrin down the road, hopefully someday it will get to live again.
Subscribed and will watch! Loved the old Bedford with strokes in them back in the day!! Shame more manufactures did not fit them over here in England! Was a few ERF EC but was not many with the detroit strokers in them!
New sub ... she's a diamond in the ruff .I drove longhau for yrs and had a 88 Pete with a 3408 "kitty Cat" but they under geared her with a 9 sp fuller eaton🤦♂️😥 But she was a puller🙂👍
Hi Wayne, you sir are hellva a mechanic to be able to stab that 3408 starter in on the first try, good on ya.Just caught your channel,Love the content, and filming. Now that you have done a first start on a CAT 08,you have now a chance to do the great trifecta. A V-12 Detroit, CAT 3408,and a CUMMINS K series, you could do a KT, or KTA.The super diesel engines of the 70's-80's,Ok Ok I guess you can put the V-8 MACK in that category too.Have been trucking since the 70's,second generation.I now own a 1995 FLD132 with a 64" bunk, powered by 1987 3406B CAT,which I would not trade for a newer Semi. Was so excited to hear that 3408 fire up so easily,Those CAT's are over built for a trucking application, originally made for working with rocks and dirt.Keep those ACE videos coming, looking forward to the next first start.C-Ya
I'm envious.Good on you to make it happen by making the trip to NC.Having experienced the smell around those poultry farms ,I can only imagine how pleasant the heat etc. was. Those 3408's have such a unique sound.Kinda brings back memories of some E-9 Mack V-8s I drove.
@@Ol2Stroker If you get a V8 Mack, you may as well get something with a Cummins 903 V8 to complete your collection of V8's from each engine manufacturer. They were in 10 ton tractors in Viet Nam and they ran straight pipes that exited in front of the tandems straight out the sides. REALLY cracked when they got on it. I know they don't have big horsepower, but the sound... I think you should get one if you can find one. Hey, it's not my money or labor, it's yours!
@@tomkrisel4493 not too interested in a 903 but a K is on the list. We're not putting together a V8 collection per-se but we are putting together a big power collection.
Hey there I'm watching your videos for the first time...im not a fella just a chic that likes to hear these old trucks Cheech!! She sounded great and great job getting her started Cats are good motors!! Thanks for sharing
That old girl reminds me of my 1st truck I owned...2000 Freightliner Classic Flattop, 425 Cat, 10spd, duel stacks & all Aluminum wheels. She was blue & she was beautiful when she was cleaned up & pulling a chemical tank!!! Much love from Mobile Alabama.
Good looking ole 1980 classic Peterbilt. I’d rebuild that bad boy. Runs pretty good 👍 for an old CAT 🐱 😁👌 I’d give it what it needs and fix ‘er on up sir.
My first driving job was a 1982 extended hood 359 with a rebuilt 3406B built to 500hp. It was a great truck. I always wanted to drive a 3408. There is something about a V8. I envy you.
Watching you putting the starter in having so much fun remind me of putting the 4 speed in my roadrunner everyone showed up to help till the beer ran out so like you kept going till done 💪
I can’t believe you bought it home, had to change the starter and connected it directly from the battery and it just runs beautifully. I love that truck already!
Ol2Stroker brings a 4-stroke back to life... guess that explains the weird weather. Strapped the fuel tank to the drive shaft... uhhhh... I might not be the brightest knife in the chandelier, but seems to me the tank is connected to the frame, so maybe use the strap to hold the tank to the frame and not the drive shaft. Oh, well, what's done is done. Looking forward to the next installment.
12:00 - you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning. Breakfast beer for the win. And are you really even friends if you don't bust on your buddy with innuendos when polishing knobs? It's no Detroit, but that CAT sounds good. Fired right off with not a ton of effort, really. Hearing it run has to be satisfying.
I have worked with several trucks with 3208 engines that are old as dirt, so when I seen it wasn't locked up and the oil was good I knew it would crank and pull something heavy.
Dude, when that CAT lite off and sat there PURRING smooth as silk, I got goosebumps! Another rare gem and that shift knob. Creativity went out the door when the 80's ended. Start of plastic garbage with NO class began to kill the era of awesome trucks. Check out the low D.O.T #. Set of 8in straight pipes would sound great on that v8 as well the v12. Always enjoy the phrases you use with the sense of humor, love it!
OUTSTANDING. ! Probably one of the best truck finds on TH-cam. It is going to take you alot of work. But that truck fixed up would be priceless. The motor alone is one of the hardest things to find. One in a running and driving Pete. Unbelievable. Best of Luck. Stay Safe. Keep Up the Great Work. 👍 🇺🇸
The Pete dealership that I worked at sold one of the last 3408’s put in a 359. I worked on a few, but, yes they were quite rare. The fuel mileage was horrible but they pulled well stock
Floyd Man that sounded good, just the way I remembered them to sound. Drove one same year as that one with a 6&4. Really enjoyed driving that one for sure.
I’d like to see the fuel system completely gone through and the battery isolation boxes fixed/replaced. Sucks you have to redo the air tank and plumbing but it was leaking anyway, right? Sounds good and runs healthy! Change out the air filter canisters, throw a coat of wax and polish on her, and she would look good as new with a good set of tires all around! Thanks for sharing and keep us updated!
That's an awesome Pete Wayne. I reckon it would look real nice with all the frame etc all spruced up and painted (replace whatever needs replacing), full set of wheels and tyres of course, but keep the patina on the bonnet, cab and sleeper. The cat sounds good too. Best of luck with it. How good was this episode? You not only get the truck running but you get your knob polished as well......ha ha ha....
You gotta restore it! Would love to see a collaboration with you and Gentry and Sons on a frame extention some day...truck is awesome but definitely needs some more wheelbase!

Great Video Wayne. It definitely runs decent. It would be nice to see it fixed up like your other trucks or at least driveable and clean up the original paint as good as possible. It’s awesome and needs to be preserved. Thanks for sharing your treasure.
These things were made in the glory days of trucking. Back when trucks could be had with not just I6, but 2 and 4 stroke V8s and V12 engines, and none of them had automatic transmissions, or looked like spaceships. Nothing new gets me going at all. You gotta get this one back on the road.
Love that old Pete clean it up and do what you do Wayne it’s a beautiful old truck and I know you will not wast any time getting it back to the way she definitely deserves when you get here done she will look as good as your other beautiful one anyways great channel can’t wait to see more videos
She might be old but that 3408 sounds really good , That's exactly how they sounded back then, Somebody took care of it back in the day, Good job Wayne , If that truck was stripped down and put back together from the frame up that will be one nice looking ride , I was a teenager when this truck came out , I remember back in the day The 359 longhood , They showed it on TV news and pulling the cover off her , The trucking industrial went nuts over that truck , They had so many orders it was pathetic , The 359 longhood truck and the first color was kind of a light plum purple in 1986 I believe She was a beauty , My friend bought one he just had to have it , and he still has it today hes not getting rid of it , I would clean her up a little bit and put it on the market , there is always a buyer
Hey Joe the truck is a long hood. They couldn't fit the 3408 in a standard hood truck so all 3408s are long hoods. That's what exhd stands for is extended hood
That truck is a classic and a keeper. Change the fluids and filters , replace the fan clutch and air cleaner ,fix the air tank mount, clean her up and lube the u joints, chassis, brake cams and throw out baring. Check and adjust the brakes and put on some good rubber and get ta truckin ! That rig will be well worth your effort ! I drove and maintained large cars for 52 years and enjoyed 95% of it ! Best of luck to ya !

Thanks brother 🤟🤟
grand slam! You are in the groove!
I sure hope the videos start to catch on now!
I knew a guy who had a 3408 in a KW, and that thing ran sweet! That frame was FULL with that engine. The only one I ever saw in a truck. I was working at a Cat dealer at the time.
It sure fills up them rails there's like zero room to work on it on the sides!
Lol sounds sponsored and way outa our budget.
Cheaper to just throw a newer cut off on it and a newer steer under it unless you just like running through money lol
@@leejohnson6173 definitely. Unless you're sponsored that's not an equitable route.
We're tryin!!
That 3408 my old man had always had a long roll over before it fired. That’s a Gem! Dude you gotta rebuild it
Another awesome video with a sweet CAT 3408. Keep the content rolling Wayne but don't forget about the Detroits.
I don't think there's a chance of me forgetting them lol
Would love to see some more of that TT8v92 race truck
Dude, you gotta restore her. She’s a bad little girl and needs to be on the road again.
If y'all will sub and watch I'll do it!
Subscribed and will watch! Loved the old Bedford with strokes in them back in the day!! Shame more manufactures did not fit them over here in England! Was a few ERF EC but was not many with the detroit strokers in them!
@@micksroversmg558 thanks Mick and welcome!
Careful budy! If Karen hears u say that she's gonna berate you for using the words BAD and GIRL in the same sentence! She'll call u sexist!!!
New sub ... she's a diamond in the ruff .I drove longhau for yrs and had a 88 Pete with a 3408 "kitty Cat" but they under geared her with a 9 sp fuller eaton🤦♂️😥
But she was a puller🙂👍
Hey Michael glad ya found us over here! Actually a KT and e9 500 are on my list of stuff to own.
Anybody that ties anything at all to a driveshaft operates on a different level. Cool rig. You guys did a great job.
Good to see you again Wayne I had a brother named Wayne he died 6 months ago hope you an your family are doing great buddy
Shit Tommy I'm really sorry to hear that. Keep your head up brother, thanks for tuning in!
That was a neat trick with the solder on the battery cable, I'll have to use it one day.
It works pretty slick!
I want to get an e9 at some point Gary!
Thanks for watching Carrie! Glad you found us hope you're enjoying the channel and welcome!
Stoked for you Wayne, let us know where you'll go with resto. and race truck - rust is the devil's work!
Man do I have some serious resto projects now. I need a shop!
Thanks Randy! Sounds like a nice truck!
Good looking ole 1980 classic Peterbilt. I’d rebuild that bad boy. Runs pretty good 👍 for an old CAT 🐱 😁👌 I’d give it what it needs and fix ‘er on up sir.
It's a really hard to find old truck Steven I agree I definitely think it's worth saving
My first driving job was a 1982 extended hood 359 with a rebuilt 3406B built to 500hp. It was a great truck. I always wanted to drive a 3408. There is something about a V8. I envy you.
That's a helluva first gig driving 🤟🤟
Watching you putting the starter in having so much fun remind me of putting the 4 speed in my roadrunner everyone showed up to help till the beer ran out so like you kept going till done 💪
Hell yea Curt 🤟🤟🤟🤟
I can’t believe you bought it home, had to change the starter and connected it directly from the battery and it just runs beautifully. I love that truck already!
Ol2Stroker brings a 4-stroke back to life... guess that explains the weird weather. Strapped the fuel tank to the drive shaft... uhhhh... I might not be the brightest knife in the chandelier, but seems to me the tank is connected to the frame, so maybe use the strap to hold the tank to the frame and not the drive shaft. Oh, well, what's done is done. Looking forward to the next installment.
💯💯💯 I ain't mad at him it was so friggin hot when we were loading we were both a little delerious!
@@Ol2Stroker Yeah, bad decisions can be made when you are really hot or really cold.
@@stansdds totally! Trip wouldn't have been the same without em!
Wayne you gotta keep working on the pete and your wife is helping ya thats awsome keep up the great up load s
Thanks Jesse!
Hahahah my sentiments exactly on the knob joke! I'm so relieved it runs. I literally dove in head first and had no idea if I was gonna come out on top
Thanks Mark! I couldn't believe it when it fired up and just idled perfectly.
Good to hear that old girl come to life again. Good luck with the restoration and hopefully you will post it again when finished.
I plan to do a build series on it, so subscribe!
I'm keeping my eye on this build!👍
Awesome thanks Carlos!
Love the old 359's and a total plus with the 3408. Sweet
Thanks Charles! I was really excited to be able to do something noone else on here is doing!
Gonna have to tell my friend Danny Smith he's gonna have to step it Up. LMAO ☹️ 🤣
Starts better than a new truck, that's amazing 👏
BACK IN THE DAY IT WAS SAID NEVER LATE WITH A 08!!! AWESOME CAT HOUSE!! GREAT VIDEO WAYNE!!!!
Thanks Dan! I've heard that before guess we're gonna see!
Bud she needs to be restored, you have a classic right there for the history of trucking. 😊
Great find very rare well worth the time it will take to put it back on the road can't wait to see it done
Thanks man I thought so too! They sure aren't making them anymore.
The Pete dealership that I worked at sold one of the last 3408’s put in a 359. I worked on a few, but, yes they were quite rare. The fuel mileage was horrible but they pulled well stock
Floyd
Man that sounded good, just the way I remembered them to sound. Drove one same year as that one with a 6&4. Really enjoyed driving that one for sure.
Oh man that'd be killer if this one had a 6x4!
I can't wait to how this one turns out awesome old girl
Thanks Paul me either!
I really like your plan it's very similar to mine!
Hey, it was great watching y'all polish your knob!🤣 That said.. that old 3408 sounds like a keeper! Once the fuel hit it, it was off and running.😉
🤣🤣🤣🤣 doesn't get much better than getting an old Pete running and getting your knob polished in one video!
Hearing that ole girl come to life was priceless!!...I love how those old Petes sit. They look so good!
This thing for sure had the look!
You gotta restore it! Would love to see a collaboration with you and Gentry and Sons on a frame extention some day...truck is awesome but definitely needs some more wheelbase!
Man it's pretty long for a factory truck already. I'd love to meet up with him sometime.
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome, Awesome job. And love the opening montage, very Smoky and the Bandit. Beautiful ol truck. Thank you for saving it and bringing it back to life. God Bless You and all of your Family and Friends. Awesome.
Thanks Kevin I'm really glad y'all are diggin the intro!
Keep going on it make it a keeper nice old truck
Thanks Albert!
You need to keep going on her. This is a very cool truck! You can do it Wayne, you're the man.
Thanks Junior! I want to!
You've got a long way to go an not a short time to get their on the grey ghost its great to see it running nothing like a big v8 it needs to be brought back to life whether a full resto or just the minimum done to make it drive . I love the new start i was thinking of the song seeing it
Thanks Peter I really think it's worth saving and preserving!
That CAT 3408 sounds sweet! Can't wait to see it driving to.
I can't wait to see it move!
"AWESOME"!!! Sounds great!! A great addition to your collection!! ,,, Have to brag on your wife coming out to help ya. The hand signals were spot on. No doubt she supports ya. Yaw seem to complement each other very well. Good on ya man. You're a lucky feller.
Thanks Joey! We always try and help each other as much as we can
@@Ol2Stroker That's is really great!!
Wayne I love this channel. I drove a lot of different detroits over the years and and Cummins and caterpillar the Detroit and cats were my favorite my truck I run now has a 3406b great motor looking forward to this new project
Awesome thanks Justin!
Great Video Wayne. It definitely runs decent. It would be nice to see it fixed up like your other trucks or at least driveable and clean up the original paint as good as possible. It’s awesome and needs to be preserved. Thanks for sharing your treasure.
Thanks Doug! I'll try my best to bring it back and preserve it, you know I will!
These things were made in the glory days of trucking. Back when trucks could be had with not just I6, but 2 and 4 stroke V8s and V12 engines, and none of them had automatic transmissions, or looked like spaceships. Nothing new gets me going at all. You gotta get this one back on the road.
I agree completely
RUNS DAMN GOOD, shocked for as long as it has been sitting.
Ran great! Totally shocked honestly
Enjoyable , funny, glad to see someone with a living history of what trucking was!!
Thanks Michael sure appreciate it
I was a awesome video truck runs good thankful for that
Noone is more thankful than I am I promise! Lol
Hi Wayne, you are lucky the pump element plungers were not stuck up in their bores. Had to remove all mine and polish them up.
I was really curious about the condition of the inside of the pump. I agree got really lucky there. When you coming over to see it?!
Love that old Pete clean it up and do what you do Wayne it’s a beautiful old truck and I know you will not wast any time getting it back to the way she definitely deserves when you get here done she will look as good as your other beautiful one anyways great channel can’t wait to see more videos
Thanks Bryan sure appreciate ya!
Nice vid. Great project truck. Looking forward to the next one
She might be old but that 3408 sounds really good , That's exactly how they sounded back then, Somebody took care of it back in the day, Good job Wayne , If that truck was stripped down and put back together from the frame up that will be one nice looking ride , I was a teenager when this truck came out ,
I remember back in the day The 359 longhood , They showed it on TV news and pulling the cover off her , The trucking industrial went nuts over that truck , They had so many orders it was pathetic , The 359 longhood truck and the first color was kind of a light plum purple in 1986 I believe She was a beauty ,
My friend bought one he just had to have it , and he still has it today hes not getting rid of it ,
I would clean her up a little bit and put it on the market , there is always a buyer
Hey Joe the truck is a long hood. They couldn't fit the 3408 in a standard hood truck so all 3408s are long hoods. That's what exhd stands for is extended hood
@@Ol2Stroker For sure I kinda wasn't paying attention there , But I straighten my paragraph out best i could
@@joeferreira7382 no worries bro!
Thanks for sharing this with us the sound of the CAT cranking up was music to my ears. You have a been blessed. The polishing your knob was hilarious.
Compared to straight six..that 4 stroke v8 diesel sound is just freaking sweet!😍👍
Hell yea! Totally different than a 6
That truck is a classic and a keeper.
Thanks Doug gonna need a little bit more than just that but I'm hopeful and optimistic!
I've REALLY been looking forward to this video and it did not disappoint me...That thing sounds GREAT! And now you're a Cat man Wayno. Can't wait to see what the future holds for this project. Just remember, you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning...
Haha hell yea Bruce! I'm glad you enjoyed it I was curious to see what you thought!
What a great project Wayne! The 3408 Cat engine is rare and sounds great under load. Can't wait to see this one on the road!
Hell yea me either Robert!
Another great video can't wait to see what you'll do with this truck Full restoration would be 👌👌
Thanks David!
@@Ol2Stroker keep up the great work your videos are a pleasure to watch Will be great if you can get the V12 Detroit and the V8 Cat back on the road again Mint👌👌👌
You got it running sounds great. Put stacks on, your almost done. ✌️
I wish it was gonna be that easy!
The whole "dropping the starter on your foot, arm, or head" is something I face every time I start work on anything lol.
It's never any fun!
My old 79 kw lw 924 3408 , and it had 80lbs of oil pressure, and with my 6inch rain catchers , it would lump and bump just like a big block Chevy, mr cat was the nicest old kwhopper I have even driven
