      Yet I feel like alot of Ragnars downfall was his fault. His betrayal of Ragnar hurt him deeply. He had lost so much, been betrayed by others, but Loki betraying him stung the most.

    What I always found crazy was 500 years earlier, before the Saxons and Danes even came to Britian, the Latinos and Anglos were battling with 10x the size of armies, numbering in the tens to hundreds of thousands. Then 500 years later, in the Saxon and Dane days, 2,000 soldiers was the absolute largest anyone could muster. Just 100 men could take over entire regions, as opposed to 100,000. Even 300 years after the Great Hethen Army, the Norman conquest was tiny compared to 1,000 years earlier in the Roman vs Anglo days.

    • @cianmurtagh468
      @cianmurtagh468 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Romans exaggerated constantly. Look at the 'forts' of 1000000 barbarians foundations in archeology and their usually the size of a cowshed. I reckon Romans actually had numbers from their institutions and logistics but well I'd say your idea of 100 taking over a region was quite common back then before they showed up

    • @NickWilly-yi5xb
      @NickWilly-yi5xb 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank You. THAT is the source of my disgust with The Whole institution Of "Royalty", back before The Intergenerational Stockholm Syndrome, That brought The Cult Obsession with Royal Families, they started out as bands of 100 (or less ) armed thugs, who could impose their will on the surrounding countryside and shake down the local inhabitants, much more like The Mafia than King Arthur's Court.

    • @anthonyskata
      @anthonyskata 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Roman empire was huge yo. But they also let most anyone join them. They would rather gain soldiers than fight them. This also caused the empire to crumble. The Roman soldiers would assimilate into the area and vice versa. Eventually they sided with locals more than that did with the leaders in Rome. The Vikings added beautiful women to their country but they didn't really establish big outposts or recruited from outside as much

    • @TheGeoArchaeologist
      @TheGeoArchaeologist 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Roman collapse and subsequent vacuum in various regions did mean smaller armies could achieve more. And as the Roman system broke down, it almost made for a mini collapse throughout Europe. Some areas which had been occupied by rome for longer than people there could remember were now forced to carve their own path, forming their own cultures, and fighting their way into the world we start to recognize.
      Also keep in mind England isn’t actually that big tbh, so mustering hundreds of thousands would be kinda wild

      historically accurate description is nearly impossible, but:
      - The clothing/armor and weapons displayed are actually quite close or you can say really good replica.
      - There are historical written texts that are quite believable that claim that this battle actually happened.
      We don't have believable evidence that explain how exactly this battle played out, except that the vikings won, but we really don't know how they managed it. Having far superior numbers is a fair assumption though, because most battles in history were won this way.

      The Vikings didn't always frontal charge their enemies and if properly led they used fairly advance tactics. The mixed nature and independent spirit of each warrior led to a very efficient and flexible force. The Byzantine empire appreciated their bravery, loyalty and strength and skill enough it seems to form the Varangian Guard because by the time the Vikings arrived anywhere near roman territory the roman empire was a wounded beast slowly bleeding out and armies of any appreciable size were few and far between.

      @thegreenreaper6660 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Battle"? This wasnt a battle... this was one of the most savage and onesided slaugthers in the Viking History!
      The Great heathen Army must have outnumbered the Northumbrians 15, maybe 20 to 1?
      Thousands and thousands of angry Vikings, storming towards King Aelle's army... imagine the amounts of SHIT those soldiers must have had in their pants!
      You can bet that quitea large number of those Northumbrian troops, immediately tried to flee... to no avail ofcourse. Every single one of them was killed: This encounter was over in a matter of minutes. Perhaps the 'biggest fight', was amongst the Vikings themselves over who got to kill a Northumbrian?

    • @SuBeKuTah
      @SuBeKuTah ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thegreenreaper6660 Have you read my comment? I said the whole battle took place ON KING AELLE'S FACE. The part we have seen, obviously. In any case, that's where the action is in this scene. But yes, they were desperately outnumbered - which made me really impressed by King Aelle's composure. He knew they would be slaughtered but he stood his ground, just compare his voice to that of the bishop. Doesn't mean the Northumbrians didn't fight as there was not much sense in running either, so they could as well go down killing as many of the invaders as possible. King Aelle certainly chose that approach in the part that we haven't seen. And I think he would've tried to get himself killed in battle as that was the best possible outcome for him in that situation. Just had very bad luck with that.
