Just a quick historical side note, horses were extremely rare in the Baltic and northern countries, the only people who had them would be rich nobles, their immediate retainers and kings. The Swedes and Danes historically did not use heavily armored cavalry which most of medieval Europe based their armies on. In a battle it would probably be rare if you saw more then 20 horses on a battlefield in the north. Combat revolved around the use of the shield wall as it did for centuries, and there were no major warfare innovations until the 1400s. Horses were basically gold and they would never just throw them away by charging them into a mob of guys with weapons.

@@peterroberts7684 the long bow was an English innovation mostly, down to the point that only the English knew how to make them perfectly, other countries would not have had them and if they did it was through the hiring of a English mercenaries during and towards the end of the Hundred Years’ War, this was rare though considering how poor financially the northern countries were compared to the kingdoms of Central Europe. As for trebuchets they were costly to erect and took skilled labor and a lot of time to build them. They were never made to be used in a set piece battle like the movie depicts, which is why they were called siege weapons. They would never be used against blobs of infantry, and again to make them and use them effectively required engineers who were skilled laborers in their own right. Engineers were few in the north, which is way sieges in those countries usually revolved around ship blockades and starving the settlement out. Resources were extremely scarce especially in Denmark and Sweden, very little to grow, thus they were poor. The very reason large migrations of who we call Vikings left in the first place.

One little historical detail...the red templar cross on the knight chest is from the renewed Templar Order, the Portuguese Ordem de Cristo, also symbol of voyages of Discoveries.

+Nick B Thank tou my friend for your comment. When The Templar Order ended by the French King and with Pope clearance, The Templar Order had his refuge in Portugal, by the King D.Diniz. The white within the new cross means the Order was purified.

The Long Bow was the artillery of mediaeval times... The French found a way to break their line and win a battle though.
They did not realize the "feeler shot" was done by their weakest bowman. He was going for height not distance. So they felt safe where that arrow landed. They got "CONNED"

Gave me the feeling that none in the production crew had read a single thing regarding to historical warfare, better yet watched a single decent movie that portrays two armies attacking each other.
Too bad though, the book is actually really good and described the battles with great detail.
The arrow was marking the possible max range of the archers attack, and also, from which point they can start shooting with arrows. You watched the movie and you guys still dont understand a bit of it.

Interesting fact. a lot of the men that were struck down during combat during those times, actually survived and lived out their days afterwards, or rejoined the army (if there was one left). Yes, many died and the battles were gruesome. It looked much worse than it was, however.
War didn't really become something that took a ridiculous amount of life until the Industrial Age with the invention of Gunpowder Artillery, and the exploding shell.
War sucks. But many of the more ancient fighting has much honor in it. We don't see honor much anymore these days.
I always love these before-the-battle speeches. Imagine one guy with no mic or loudspeaker trying to give an inspirational speech in front of 5'000 men. Now imagine the guys in the last row: "WTF did he just say? I couldn't hear a single word."
I didn't see the movie but I also simply love how I immediately identified the bad guys (red and ugly faces) vs the good guys (blue and nice-bloke faces). I hope the rest of the movie is a bit more subtle.

From Arn's perspective, this battle made sense. If Arn's army appeared too strong, then his enemy would send in the foot units first, and while the two army were engaging in melee, the cavalry would outflank Arn's men. The trick was to appear weak and appeasing. Arn chose to let his enemy take the high ground while his army held position some distance away at the bottom of the hill; taking the bait, the enemy general was confident that with their horse charging downhill in full might, the ground units would be easily smashed into and be completely routed. Arn, being experienced with fighting the Mamluks, knew that arrows can be effiective against horse riders when used properly. Watch "The King, 2019" - the battle tactic was very similar. You also see similar tactic during the 100 years war between the House of Plantagenet and House of Valois.

what you probably didn't know about this scene:
the battle depicted is the historical Battle of Lena which came at the end of an ongoing century long dynastic war over rule of Sweden, fought between Swedes and Danes
according to the OFFICIAL record, Odin himself rode out to lead the Swedes to victory against the Danish backed deposed king
Jan Guillou cleverly overlaid Arn in the place of Odin, the symbolism is quite deliberate ;)
Some practical details are pretty sketchy; Archers holding a drawn bow for any time longer then a second, arrows punching though shields, a surprising lack of shields for the time, a complete lack of military formations of the time, mail armour seemingly doing absolutely nothing and of course the classic trope of the main characters having a serious neglect in head armour when that would be your number 1 purchase of armour in practice.
Crag_r to be fair though, in that time period the now was dominant. considering king Harolds rag tag bunch of peasants launched over ten thousand arrows in the first MINUTE of the battle vs the invading Normans, not having archers sealed your fate.
arrows go through shields and simple chain armor if they're designed right and at a reasonable distance. and as you can see they do wear helmets, but in Arns case you could explain it with the disadvantages of wearing one such as narrowed sight etc.
Nikolas Douglas In some circumstances sure. But when it was shown Aarows going though chain at their max range then it gets sketchy. Especially when these clearly are not warbows but small hunting bows, the chances of them getting though chain at any range is not brilliant to say the least. Chain however will stop swiping sword attacks quite easily, in order to puncture chain you generally need to get quite close for a stabbing attack. Not something seen here.
Its not even about a narrow slit helmet. At the very minimum you would have one that covers the top of your head leaving your face free (like most of the forces here). Expecting to rely on chain alone, when the rest of you is covered in multiple layers would be unheard of.
The arrows MAY be able to break the links but said arrows would then have to go through the gambeson as well. Despite what Hollywood would have the audience believe, armour did actually work and bows were NOT as effective as is normally depicted e.g. the one shot one kill nonsense you see in basically every movie that features bows.
Crag is right, but sadly this is normal for movies and tv series where historical accuracy is set aside for the action and pacing.

I don't normally watch tv shows like at all, but this one got my attention really good wen I first watched it. Most descriptions of these stories back in the day are hardly accurate but the fact arn was so faithful and spent most of his time training and praying made it seem like a document, he died at the end which was so fuked up. If u haven't noticed, most ppl are like this sequence but some of us, u Kno who u are will remain strong

They didn't really act like idiots. The Sverkers would have never expected the trap as long range archery was practically unknown of during this Scandinavian era. Arn was simply smart.

A martial arts teacher once told me , fights in movies are far to long but necessary or there's nothing to really watch ... A real fight lasts about 8 seconds tops , usually shorter as it's the first mistake that loses the fight

This is one of my favorites.
Some stupid knights charge with their shield on their backs instead of holding them, and the commander just stands there waiting to be captured..
a strange fact, that there is some truth to that practice of having their shields strapped to their backs in history, either to control their horses or to wield a large weapon like a huge axe or a pike.
The infantry is far more stupid. "Oh no! There's a rain of arrows above us! Let's just hold our shields for decoration, it's not like they're used for blocking projectiles or something..."

Just some information form the books of this story. The story behind these films and this war is that one man from an important family in the early rise of the Swedish nation was punished by rivals to the throne to go to the holy land and fight in the crusade for 20 years. When he comes back he reforms the army and brings with him knowledge previously unknown to the nords, hence longbow tactics and a lot of other things. The real story here is one man saving the nation Sweden in it's cradle. The story tells us of an arrogant king controlled by the Danes supported with a huge army fighting a much smaller army in battle for the succession (heard it before?). The story uses fictional characters mixed with real events to create a somewhat historical epic story. To the Danes defence the story also tells us they are not aware of the new warfare and underestimate the technical advances of their rivals.
I hope the book describes this better, cause i fail to see what's new warfare here? Every army used Archers, the Longbow is not something New that only the English and welsh used, their are also theories that the Bow was introduced by vikings that came to England, there are tales of very strong viking Archers that used obviously very strong bows. The Longbow had been in use probably for ages, it's just a long powerful bow, Warriors used bows of difrent drawweight according to how strong they were. One inovation that came to the Longbow after the crusade was the curves at the end of the bows. Anyway what's portrayed here is idiotic, it's not how they used cavalry. And Archer fire at long range can not kill Knights in chainmail unless you hit him in the eye.
JanXXVI well i just told about the book. And it's not a documentary.
Good writer's that write about historical settings, do their research, they read many books on the subject, G.R.R.M f.eks has read lots of books on the medieval age before he started to write Game of thrones, and that is fiction, but it's damn good fiction cause there are so many details that are taken from medieval history that fits so well with his fictional world.
Now i havent read the books on Arn, so i don't know how they are, but im betting their a lot better than the movies. Im also betting that the Author did his research on templars and the medieval period of the crusades. Longbow tactics that you mention here, could be just mass amount of Archers as the English armies of the hundread years wars used, archery was not something New, and every army had a large portion of Archers or crossbowmen. The English could Field many cause they made it tradition and insisted that the farmers practice archery, this took years of training. While the French also had Archers and longbowmen, but they used more mass amount of crossbowmen, the crossbow doesnt need years of training to be able to use it like a warbow does. So if this hero copied the tactics of the English by installing a large archery tradition no the swedish farmers, it is not well shown in this Movie, English longbow men also used stakes infront of them, so that cavalry could not charge straight at them, and the Archers were also often deployed on the wings while Heavy infantry of men at arms and foot Knights formed the center. I don't see any of that in this Movie, so im criticising this Battle scene as very badly done and unbelievable, which is a shame, cause i like the story in the movies.
It's been a while since I read the books, but it was basically something like this:
The books states that Scandinavia at the time, is still stuck in the "viking" style of fighting, mass Infantry without any support from Cavalry and little to no Archers. There was also some mention of the fighters acting like "berserkers", in that they would wield too heavy weapons, and focusing too much on raw strenght, instead of agility, endurance and technique.
Arn, the maincharacter, grows up in a monastery, where he is taught how to fight and ride by a monk who used to fight in the Holy Land as a Templar. Thus he learns state of the art fighting technique and military tactics. These skills are obviously further refined when Arn is sentenced for adultery, and has to serve as a Templar for 20 years.
During his very last years in the Holy Lands, Jerusalem is captured by Saladin (Hattin 1187). Arn survives because he has a "mutual respect" relationship with Saladin. Then he joins the 3rd Crusade, and goes home afterwards. So his timeline as a Templar is pretty much 1167-1192, give or take a few years.
The book also places a lot of focus on the Templars and the Hospitalliers as pretty much Medieval Special Forces, which is kind of accurate. They were low in numbers, but had the best training, the best equipment, the best technique, discipline and tactics of their time.
So when Arn returns home to (current day) Sweden, knowing a war with Denmark is only a matter of time, he starts reforming the army, replacing "viking" fightingstyle with Templar style training focusing on technique and endurance, and ofc adding Heavy Cavalry and Massed Longbows.
The battle in the video is the end of the third book, and I believe it was supposed to be 15ish years after he returns home, so somewhere around 1210 give or take a few years.
How historically accurate this is, is obviously up for debate, but that's an extremely basic version of how the books went.
Well, this is NOT historical settings, but all pure fiction. Jan Guillou has been inspired by Swedish history when writing the books, but he doesn't claim that it's something that actually happend. But he has reused a lot of swedish landmarks and places that is known for historic reasons in Sweden. If you want to compare it, think of it as a Swedish Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, Beowulf story. It's just legends.
The man who played Arn's father died on Tuesday night this week from battling cancer for a year.

@@bryanjensen300 armor didn't start to effectively bounce arrows until the very tail-end of the Medieval period. This is the very beginning, when most men were wearing ONLY chain. Chain is good against slashing weapons, but not crushing (because it's flimsy) or piercing (open rings). Even at the battle of Agincourt, it's suggested that French men-at-arms wearing iron or steel "munitions plate" were the ones taking the brunt of the damage, and the wealthier knights in tempered steel were able to just slog through as though it were a hailstorm. The real problem though are the horses. It takes a LOT of arrows to bring down a horse, but they're not keen on being on a battlefield at all, much less getting shot. Referencing Agincourt again, this is why subsequent waves of attack went in on foot - the horses were too unreliable in the face of all those arrows. Mounted charges were the exception for the majority of the medieval era, not the rule. Their use in battle is overstated in cinema, because a cavalry charge looks stunning on screen.

Many of the antitank recoilless rifles made in the 1960s and 70s prior to laser and satellite guided smart warheads had a "marking rifle" attached to the launcher chassis. Usually a .50 BMG rifle that ranged and plotted the target. The crew of the enemy tank would hear the BONK of the .50 caliber projectile striking their tank and think nothing of it, not knowing that 5 seconds later, the 50 pound HEAT warhead is about to follow and turn their tank into molten slag.

@@sophiaherschel567 oh no this is a very realistic depiction of how it actually happened this movie is set in the ealry middle ages so no full plate armor yet. those archers are using longbows, those have a drawweight between 150 to 180 pounds. that is a LOT of force. what you see here is what happens when you shoot mass volleys of arrows. only at the end of the middle ages when full plate armor became a thing bows became less effective against knights, but could still kill you. just look at Agincourt, although they did not shoot in an arc as seen in this movie but they shot point blank into the french so they would have a better chance of penetrating armor etc.

The war that time differed from the modern one. In the past the search for tactical advantage was secondary. The willingness to fight in any situation was the primary.

This is an absolutely fantastic movie if you're up for something long, heavy, and requiring a generous helping of closed caption reading (assuming you're not fluent in Swedish, Aramaic, Latin, and who really knows how many other languages are actually spoken in the flick). It's on my Top 10 list. In my opinion, Sweden puts out A LOT of top-quality movies 👍 Lookout, Hollywood.
What i find amazing is how massive amounts of men would charge at each other and usually never actually be killed from the enemy usually they were trampled to death. Even then, there was so few casualties. However now you can send that many men at 10 people and lose all of them. Seriously, that's just plain horrifying.

It's not true . If you have minimal historical knowledge, and reconstruction. Mass killing in fight with heavy damage . Horses and heavy cavalry its damage too , but swords and axes kill peples more then anyone.
Not always the case. Many battles of English civil war left many thousands dead or dying and fields literally muddy from blood.
Whilst still formed up in cohesive units the casualties aren't terribly heavy... Once an enemy line is broken or flanked, or their resolve falters and they run.. Then people die wholesale.
@@mrpirate3470 correct. Historically about 90% of all casualties occurred after a unit broke. Which is why in ancient and medieval battles the Victor's often suffered tiny losses.

Got to love these battles in which there is no interest in formation or tactic, especially when the red side had clearly never came across the cutting edge technology we now call ´´the bow and arrow´´which seemed to take them completely by surprise. The answer to that surprise was to order a full frontal disorderly mass charge where no one was covering anyone. Pretty realistic all of it

Armies very rarely "ran" at each other. Maybe the last couple of yards as a shock and motivational thing, but the often walked slowly towards each other.
Also holding the weight of a war bow for more than a few seconds would be exhausting. You're holding an incredible amount of force. Imagine holding 150 to 180 pounds above your head for 30 to 45 seconds.
Spot on was thinking the same myself. English / Welsh longbow men actually developed irregularities in bone structure in their " pulling arm " shoulders. Yes your right for time it took to pull the bow they would have waited to the last second.

There are two more aspects of this scene which abound in movies but are very unlikely: men wouldn't usually exhaust themselves by running hundreds of meters with heavy armor and weaponry before impact. They would probably gain a little speed a couple of meters before impact but most of the time they just walked into each other for the first clash. Running makes for poorer organization and cover, all while increasing the risk of falling and being trampled. The other one is the archery: loading a bow requires a lot of strength, so the archers wouldn't hold it for an extended time, but rather load and release. They would also not wait for a FIRE sign and decide for themselves (which the marker serves for in the first place).
Of course, this fictional fighting is much more dramatic but it's a bit sad that we're being wrongly educated about history by popular movie.

It's called a poetic license, and like the bard's who would tell the tale using their own style of telling it.
Which in some cases would take a bit of time to get the real story.
It's like in the modern day when you talk to democrats, they lie until they are caught, and even then they will continue to lie to cloud the issue, like saying that Jan 6th was a insurrection, when in fact it was a hoax staged and setup by Pelosi, or how about the incident with K. Rittenhouse, there are people who still said that he had killed 3 black Americans and that they were unarmed and peacefully protesting, all of which are absolutely not true and they are actually brain washed. And for those who don't know, NO BLACK AMERICANS were killed by Mr. Rittenhouse, and the 2 who were killed, were white and were trying to kill him, and the 3rd guy the one who testified in court, and under oath admitted that he had been trying to kill Mr. Rittenhouse and that the reason why Mr. Rittenhouse shot him was because he had been pointing a handgun at Mr. Rittenhouse, and was fortunate that he was only wounded.
However if you would ask the View, about it they will say that Mr. Rittenhouse had no right to defend himself, and had no right to have a AR-15 to defend himself ( what is the most amazing thing about the View is why is it still on the air, and how can they be some of the stupidest creatures on the planet and still be on the air. And why no whaling ships haven't harpooned whoops yet)
so why is he completely shocked at the result of charging into a barrage of arrows? hadn't the bow been around for quite some time at this point?

one big historical and technical inaccuracy is that you can not hold fire with bows. they are not crossbows and take a lot of energy holding them.
A longbow can also break if held at full draw for too long.

If the honor that hand to hand combat brings did not matter to Arn, his guys could have just held their positions and kept up a sustained rate of fire until everything in the field was dead, just like how the 19th century British troops in Africa did against human wave attacks by the Zulus and other tribal warriors. Arn's forces in this scene had plenty of ammunition to keep up sustained volleys and squad designated marksmen amongst them could be assigned to pick off the enemy leaders with aimed shots. But during that time, this would have been considered dishonorable so they had to abandon safe pragmatism and charge in for close combat.
