    Around 2 months ago my now ex started gaslightning me, calling me toxic, made me feel like there was something very wrong with me and invalidated my feelings and my reality before discarding me. After years of therapy that scared me so much. Maybe he was right, maybe I was relapsing into my traumas? Was there something wrong with me? What could I do to heal? I immediately contacted my therapist, whom I hadn't met for a couple years now, for a checkup. She just told me she had never seen me healthier than now. Therapy is your best ally against your own traumas, doubts and the abusive people surrounding you. Videos on youtube, self help books will never compare. Go to therapy guys, it's great.

    "So many people are afraid to go to therapy because they don't want to know that they are fucked up. I want to why it is I am fucked up and how we can change that, and how I can choose differently for myself." SO TRUE.
    I did a few free sessions of therapy last year and although I have run out of free sessions, I am constantly revising whatever my therapist taught me. It was a short-term experience, but I finally got a very refreshing take on "myself" after YEARS of not confiding my deepest insecurities, even with my closest friends and family, and never having the courage to hear stuff about myself. I am trying my best to reframe my thinking, reach out to my friends more, and put greater trust and belief in myself. It's gonna be a very long journey but I believe it will be worth it.

    I went to therapy for 8 months and it was literally the best experience of my life!! I had two different therapists within this time (one moved to a different location) and I loved every minute of it. Don't get me wrong it is TOUGH to dig down deep into your feels especially once you've buried it so far down, but once you release it and give yourself that closure you feel like a whole new you. Therapy LITERALLY saved my life! And I am forever thankful ❤️ this is by far my fav video on TH-cam, I hope everyone gets the opportunity to try therapy in their life! Love your videos!!!!🥰

    I started going to therapy 2 years ago when I got into a serious self-harm accident. My partner urged me to go since he goes to therapy too and says it's helped him tremendously. My first experience with my therapist felt a little condescending she said things like "you're still so young you'll go through more in life." which didn't sit so well with me. I think it's also super important to find the right therapist for you. I stopped seeing her after 3 months and took a break. My mental health went down again for a few months and I decided to try to look for another therapist again. I talked to a few before I found the right one for me and honestly it's one of the best investments you can ever make for yourself. I haven't hurt myself in 2 years and I'm working on going fully sober too. Thank you for sharing your story Amy. We need more content like this.

    I've only been in therapy in a little over a year and a half and it already has made WORLDS of a difference! I have upped my frequency to three times a week and I know that isn't possible for everyone and I'm SO grateful I am in the position to have therapy. I cannot recommend it enough for EVERYONE. I think anyone can benefit from therapy!

    Its also important to remember the difference between a *psychiatrist, psychologist, a clinical psychologist and a therapist*. At least in EU, as a psychologist I have to have a MA in psych (+ several years of clin. training in hospital for clin. psych.) which includes general biology, neurology and pharmacology which allows me to consider a much wider range of causes and treat people w. serious mental illnesses. A therapist might be someone who just took a course and a psychiatrist is not a therapist at all, but a doctor. They prescribe meds for a wide variety of neurological issues, but if needed, they should refer you to a psychologist.

    • @amy_lee
      @amy_lee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      yes definitely! thanks for educating us. personally i have only worked with a therapist and have never seen a psychiatrist or been prescribed anything so that's why my video focused primarily on therapy. but i believe all forms of medical mental health are so useful and the differences are very essential for us getting help and getting better. thank u!

    • @kwunnkzz
      @kwunnkzz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That explains so much. I've seen 2 psychiatrists for 'therapy' because I thought they'd be able to do what therapists/psychologists do and because therapy is not very normalised where I am. It seemed like they were just looking to cure me with medicine and because I'm not actually mentally ill or bad enough, there wasn't much they could do and just gave very generic advice like 'think positive, have a hobby'. Like wow, couldn't have come up with that myself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. One did prescribe me medicine though and it seems to be helping. Maybe some of my symptoms stemmed from chemical imbalance, but it still seems like all it's doing is suppressing rather than fixing the root cause.

    • @Lea-hl8md
      @Lea-hl8md 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      kwunnkzz Honestly I feel the same way, I take medicine but I feel like it supresses me, but when I don’t take it I’m jittery.

    I am glad therapy is working so well for you. I had mixed results with it, though mostly good. Decades ago, the therapy profession was taking some wrong turns, like into "memory recovery," a false technique that was messing lives up. And some practitioners had messiah complexes. Quality standards in therapy are better now, but people must always remember to be in charge of their own therapy experience. You seem to have that down quite well. It is clear you are feeling so much better at this point in your life.

    Therapy has changed my life for the better. In college, I struggled a lot with mental health and never validated my own emotions. I never wanted to burden others with my problems, so I kept myself busy to hide it. Having a professional validate my emotions and feeling, taught me how to feel your feelings. Thank you for shedding light on how amazing therapy is.. past me needed would've loved this.

    I thought for years that I didn't needed one and that talking to my boyfriend was enough, but I recently felt sooo bad after lockdown that I decided to take an appointment. I sent you a DM but I managed to get here so early that you might see it!! : Amy, thank you for all the amazing videos and this journey you are allowing everyone to take with you. I am so grateful for you and all your kind, thoughtful and progressive words that have inspired me for a long long long time now. Whenever I am stressed, down or need something to pick me back up I go straight to your channel and watch a video (especially your living alone diaries) and I identify so much with your life and your personal struggles and how you have grown from them. I also am a dog mum, have struggled and continue to struggle with depressive episodes and am split between so many different paths and directions. For me, my current battle and where my struggles lie is what path I choose to take and having the courage and bravery to follow it through, for myself, not to please or impress others. I am entering university in September and have chosen a path I am passionate about and now I feel the need to continue seeking for personal growth and confidence to take control Of my own life. This message is so long but even if you never see or read this, I feel I have spoken it a little into existence and typing it has helped me feel grounded and more confident. I hope to meet you one day and once again, thank you for helping me endlessly. What you are doing is changing so many lives for the better and I hope to continue this journey alongside you for many years to come. Pilar- London

      hi pilar! wow thank you so much o____o sorry that i missed your dm as well. you are so young (we both are)! don't feel pressured to have things figured out or to "know your path" rn but it is GREAT that you have a direction you wanna go in. i have changed interests and career paths/desires so much and i am only 26. as you get older, you will become wiser and more authentic. your intuition will get stronger. plus! the whole point of earth school is to learn lessons and our life's journey is to constantly "figure it out." you are already doing so well for wanting to invest yourself, ask yourself deeper bigger questions on life, and for seeking self-fulfillment. you are doing AWESOME! keep going! much love to u, amy

    Thank you for sharing Amy! 💚 I been going to therapy for about 3yrs now & I did it for about a yr as a child. I agree with everything you're saying & I have the same perspective on therapy now too! I also feel like growing up asian American it's not acceptable to go to counseling. It took me going for my parents to accept my anxiety. I know not every parent is as mine but if you're struggling & would like to seek help but worried about what your fam may think go for it! It has helped make my connections with them more healthier & mental health conversations are a regular for us now! ❤ I would also suggest taking breaks as therapy can be exhausting in many ways! I have taken months of breaks in between these 3yrs & it has helped me a lot. Also if you have Medicaid or make less then 2k you can apply for it & get free mental health insurance. This is possible in my state not sure what it is like for everyone else but an option to seek. I also do talk therapy, focused on trauma if this is something you want to look into. I also see a therapist who does emdr(rapid eye movement) counseling for trauma. We haven't tried this yet but so far trauma talk therapy has been good for me. I hope this helps whoever may need it. You're not alone 💙 feel free to ask questions through my comment if you need more info on what I shared

    I haven't been to therapy but would love to give a try. I love that you're talking about therapy and self-awareness! I feel like I'm going through similar things as you as an Asian American. And thank you for compiling the list of low therapy options! These are affordable!

    I'm so glad that the AM with Amy is back and that you have talked about this! :) I really feel like so many people need to hear this. Pretty much everything you have said about going to therapy and how it's changed you so much rang so true with me, especially when you were talking about how everyone has some trauma - that's so true! Thank you so much for re-starting the AM with Amy and de-stigmatising mental health and therapy and for finding affordable therapists. You're such an amazing and strong person xx

    thank you so much for this video Amy. I’m actually thinking about going to school to become a therapist to help others after I get out of high school. it’s so nice to hear that there are people out there that are open to the idea of opening up to someone else when in this day in age, it feels like everyone just tries their best to keep everything to themselves and bottle up all their emotions.

    Amy thank you thank you thank you. I love how raw, open and transparent you are in this video. I relate to the lack of opening up for fear of being a burden. Having that space to discuss, deconstruct, and grow with a therapist is the most transformative experience you can give yourself. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I am so excited for the next videos you are putting out and to be on this authentic and real journey with you.

    When you're in a mental health crisis and your therapist is on holiday for 3 weeks 😩
    But yeah, therapy is soo necessary and beneficial not only for you but also for the people you're interacting with cause it makes you a more balanced person 😊

    Thanks so much for this vid! Your tone and attitude is powerful and I appreciate your energy a lot. Super entertaining and informative, and no doubt you're reaching and helping a huge number of people! Thanks for the interesting explanations of the nuances between talking to friends about problems and talking to a mental health professional, very important point. A lot of us are 'deep feelers' as you put it. Recently I started a channel to cover similar subjects, and it's awesome to see what you and others are saying! Thanks again.

    i’ve been aware that i need therapy for almost a year now, but i haven’t been able to go since i don’t have health insurance and it seems quite expensive. i’ve also been home for the past 5 months (i’m in college) and i don’t feel comfortable going to therapy while i’m home because i would feel judged by my family. i’m not in a great place right now but hoping it’ll get better by next year :)
