    I like that the Gyrojet pistol is the only one capable of not having any inside nor outside problems. All it has is poor accuracy results and highly-expensive bullets. It didn't get jammed, malfunction, disassembled, nor hurt the user when shooting. Besides the accuracy and bullets, it was PERFECT. I even like how you reload it in the chamber rather than having it's own magazine, just like revolvers.

      @seanmalloy7249 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The Gyrojet also had the problem of having a _minimum_ effective range, as it took some distance for the projectile to reach a speed where it was effective. Accordingly, it was almost useless against someone standing right in front of you, or at the ranges typically encountered in house-to-house fighting. Additionally, because the rounds carried the propellant internally, they had a significantly lower sectional density (i.e., weight per cross-sectional area), increasing the effect of drag on the projectile after the propellant burned out.

    Though not well known today, the Smith and Wesson Light Rifle deserves an honorable mention. The British neglected to mention that their military 9mm at the time was more powerful than the US 9mm cartridges available for testing. On delivery and testing in the UK the rifles promply began blowing up. Only a few remain today because the UK, (desperate as they were for weapons) threw them in the sea! _The Liberator~_
    Reason why it was shipped with extra rounds concealed in the grip is so, once used, the Freedom Fighter with a now better weapon; passed the pistol along to another Freedom Fighter. He would repeat the process. It was never intended for any one individual to fire more than one round from the weapon. Quality was such that, once the last stored round was fired, the pistol was no longer safe to shoot; and meant to be thrown away.
    While most were destroyed after the war, a significant percentage of Liberators were dropped to US friendly Freedom Fighters in the Pacific Southeast. A famous b&w photo of an Asian Freedom Fighter exists, that shows a Liberator partially tucked into his waistband.

      @@allangibson8494 The 1911A1 was used by the US military from 1911 until the mid-1980s. From what I heard, from my dad and others, if you could hit a man sized target anywhere from around 25 yards, you were "qualified". Also, the main reason they switched to the M9 Beretta was the fact that most existing 1911s in military stocks were dated from WW2! Rather than replacing them with new .45s, they decided to go with the 9mm for NATO commonality. I guess the idea was if combined NATO forces were fighting together, they would have one common pistol cartridge. You could take cartridges from an ally if needed, even if you used different pistols.

    The revolver rifle isn't cursed. Especially the 1855 Colt. It is, literally, the most successful of that type of firearm. The 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry fought at the Battle of Chickamauga and fired 55 rounds per day per man. That's about 10 times more on average than other soldiers. They even held the line for the northern retreat. No reports from them of any self inflicted wounds due to chain fire

    So the “cooking-off” part was NOT an issue found exclusively on the revolving carbine. Loading the cylinders with bullets that don’t provide a good seal to protect the powder in each chamber was a condition that would have caused any cap and ball revolver to have a catastrophic failure. The other method used to prevent this condition was to fill the chambers with fat or wax overtop of the bullets. The ‘proper’ way to load a cap and ball revolver is to use lead bullets casted to be a tight enough fit to have a small ring of the lead ball cut out when ramming the ball into the chamber. This is what provides that sealed condition that both prevents a chain fire, as well as allow the revolver to be more easily fired in damp weather/rain.

    Another consideration with revolver rifles in general: even if they don't suffer from cookoff, the cylinder gap makes it hazardous to shoulder it the way you'd normally shoulder a rifle, as there's the risk that the gases escaping from between the cylinder and the barrel will be perfectly positioned to go right into your face. There are modern ones that just add some metal to deflect the gases away from the user, in the vein of ejection port deflectors used to keep spent cases from hitting a left-handed user on a modern autoloading rifle.
    Hypothetically you could also make the revolver push the cylinder forward when it's brought into battery and seal the gap, like the Nagant revolver famously does. I don't know if any revolver rifles go that route though.
