Hey there- I'm the speaker and I wanted to clarify something. There were 900 people in the audience that day and I was extremely nervous. So, I misspoke one of my statistics and didn't know it until I saw the video. It was actually the year 2000 when there was the largest number of democratic countries in the world, not 2020.
I think this talk made a lot more sense than people give it credit for. It is about time more people got involved with our local governments including me!
This was such an outstanding and inspiring talk, Dr. Nancy Pearson! The connection between bears and personal responsibility in a democracy is a vivid and creative image. Thank you for helping us realize the importance of engaging in local government and the value of even the smallest actions we can take to contribute to our communities. This talk is a powerful reminder of the strength of collective power and that true democracy begins with the things closest to us
I’m not gonna lie. I found this video boring at the beginning because of my shallow mind. But I came back to it this afternoon and all of a sudden I’m in love with the content, the elaborator, the audience for their laughs, and you the viewer who came to the comment section. This is truly an awesome piece and I will send it to all my loved ones. This environment is part of our priorities and we just don’t accept it even though we know it to have an influence on our everyday lives. Not much needed to be said. We who are here and reading this are all smart and we do deserve the credit. It what do we do next? GET INVOLVED!!!!!!!!
She talks as a primary school teacher, to a 6 year old audience; which both delights me, in my belief that many people don't understand these common concepts and horrifies me, reminding me of that Regaining Unconsciousness, NOFX song. She's a great speaker, but the fear remains, for most people will turn away, not from her talk, but from her topic and, those who remain until the end, will only be those who already agree with her, so she'll accomplish very little. That's the society we live in :'( Nevertheless, I loved this
Yes, people should be engaged in their local politics and governance. This is where you can have the greatest impact. City, county and State engagement matter. However, citing one small example of Libertarian extremists in a town of only 1,350 people is anecdotal at best. It is not a great case for bigger government. If you have ever had to fight the government and try and make them do their jobs like I have, you develop a disdain for bureaucracy and unelected bureaucrats. There is such a thing as too much government.
In India Every Local Leader is Neither Gangster nor Nepho kid of Politician......Cultural(colonal) root followed by 7 decades....Corruption is the Main Aim & Goal of them....🥺😒
But that the point exactly though isn't it? Why would it? Her point is not tell you what problems people should do something about. Her point is that if YOU notice that homelessness, or whatever it might be, is a problem in your local area, YOU do something about it. You participate. ❤
The U.S is a democratic republic no? Your citizens elect people to represent their interests, and these representatives act in the people's name. Thus, it is a government ruled by representatives elected by the people. A Democratic Constitutional Republic.

The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal.
- Aristotle
this quote hits really different depending on what you consider fundamentally unequal
Thanks, from Cameroon
Excellent Nancy. So proud of you.

Good work Dr. Nancy.
Does she know that the U.S. is a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy?

@falmgalm No it is a constitutional Republic.
@@Therealmathilda the US constitutional republic is democratic in nature. Are u stup*d or what?
The simple definition of a democracy is a government elected by it's citizens. That's what the US does.
@@Therealmathildait’s both
