Typing this from Immersed. I've been using it since March 2020 for work, and have not looked back since. Three key things why working in VR is better: you're out of your environment, you're more focused, and you have multiple virtual monitors.

Hopefully as it improves and comes to be more of an actual functional system they will do what they need to with regard to accessibility.

    • @thejonofalltrades
      @thejonofalltrades 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Honestly they have the most robust accessibility features on any VR headset ever, and even compared to most tech in general there are a lot of accessibility options. You have a pretty specific issue that really makes it pointlessly difficult for them to work around. Hand tracking isn’t good enough for you to have a reason to care anyway.

Been using this since it’s alpha. At that point it was the only vr remote app that was used Mac. They’ve come along way in the development. I was disappointed though when they announced the paid versions were subscription based instead buying it once. But there’s a work around. Just buy headless monitor connections for any additional video connections on your graphics card. They show up on immersed as monitors. You got the additional monitors without the need of paying a subscription.

I want Virtual Desktop to implement this... Also to include 60% layouts and other non-standard layouts like 75% or Or even ortho would be cool. Maybe even split keyboards?
Need to respect the custom keyboard community. Another solution is maybe to allow the user to take a snapshot of the keyboard and crop the image. Align keys and functions to each key easily based on keycap outline via software and allow the user to use their own custom keyboard from there.

    @MW_1535 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I did this for about 4 hours over 2 days in the Quest 2 last week. My biggest issues are comfort and the keyboard layout. Having a virtual keyboard helps A LOT, but I use a lot of special keys and they are just in the wrong location. Hopefully we'll get more standard layouts soon. The other issue is comfort. The device is just a bit too heavy (I have the elite strap with a counter weight) for long sessions imo. That being said, I feel like I was actually able to focus more easily because all exterior distractions were gone. I'll be trying it out more today and in the future to see if I can adjust.
    Thanks for the video!

I have no issue at all typing in VR. as i don't need to see my keyboard to type :). It's actually surprisingly easy to place my hands in the correct starting position and you know your on the right spot because your pointer fingers feel those notches on F and J. But i guess for those who hasn't learned to type would have significantly more issues. And from playing games on PC all my life i also know all the special symbols and other keys like home keyes and so on.

This is pretty cool, they definitely need to add several keyboard types though, also surely they could add a mouse...calibrate the same way and then as long as u don’t pick up ur mouse it’ll just track it where u move it. Once they have that Remote Desktop thing would be interesting to try it with a shadow pc, if u can pair wireless mouse n keyboards to the quest that would be great, if you only have an option of a track pad that would suck I gotta say

You are hysterical lol :) The concept is great, but their entry price which is per month is too expensive at 14.99 just to have 5 screens. That's $180 per year, every year! WOW! You can buy used physical screens for less money. Yet physical should cost more than virtual. And this is the price they are starting with? - (people are not just going to want only 2 monitors in a free version.) Usually companies start at a lower price to first gain traction and also work out the bugs (like the bug you experienced with your laptop). I also think soon this will become a native feature as part of all headsets since it is so important now that resolution is no longer in the way. And yes every time I watch... don't want to forget to say... you are AWESOME :)

The virtual keyboard overlay kinda works well. Better idea. Use pass through, to see your actual keyboard, maybe, with a semi transparent grid etc?
Or maybe have the virtual keyboard finger tip active with your virtual hands even? So we can type directly onto it. Who would need a real keyboard at all then.
    Just some thoughts.
    And yeah, tracked virtual mouse.

it would be easy to make a mouse for VR. Just put a small joystick where the left click button is. Moving the mouse on the table would move it up down left and right. And you would control the forward and backwards motion with the joysick. When it approached a floating screen the mouse cursor would 'stick' to it.

I think this would overcome much of the security concernes with working from home, it would also help the employee as you wouldn't need external cameras preventing some of the Zoom embarrassment. I will buy the Facebook Keyboard and software once it comes out and am looking forward to it. Very nice video. Thank you for the upload. I have been working and using my Hololens 2 for a while now and it is nice to see a similar interface get closer to VR headsets. Maybe I'll come out with a program that rivals theirs lol. But that's a ways off lol. I have to finish working on Mixed Reality (Hololens 2)stuff instead. The only thing I don't like about (my set) such an expensive product is the fact that you can't just use it as a VR Headset like a Quest. You would think with a Hololens 2 I should be able to just start it up and jump in Steam VR or whatever. But the good thing is since it's real Mixed Reality I can use it literally anywhere. I sometimes watch youtube while in the kitchen cooking with a music screen playlist up and messenger and my desktop all around me in the kitchen, so I can have as many screens open as I want with Mixed Reality. And it's very good in a working environment while at a desk having multiple screens to work on with a real keyboard with everything visible around you. I can be in the back up a Lyft ride with my screens following me or ...........caugh......caugh.......(looking both ways suspiciously) on the toilet watching youtube lol. Um, I think I'll stop right there lol. Thank you again.

I'll be using VirtualDesktop so I have the power of my main PC, but I can contiune to use it anywhere in the house over Wifi6... it's very cheap to use this high bandwidth connection, just add a PCIe Wifi6 card to the computer, create a wifi hotspot and then connect Quest 2 to the hotspot. Logitech has released some keyboards which can pair directly with quest over bluetooth as well which is awesome. It's crazy that just a headset and a keyboard can produce a full office / social / entertainment environment. Imagine VR 5 years from now if Facebook and others continue to produce extremely affordable headsets like the Quest 2! 120 hz, super high resolution, 6 hour battery life, direct lossless video streaming from a dedicated game system etc... - this will cause the display industry some concerns if people can have a virtual environment with a huge cinema, and a desk with 3 screens, and a relaxing outdoor area with a virtual drawing pad which tracks a real life pen using AR against a surface etc... amazing!

I was impressed with how ok it feels to be typing and working when it works, but feel like the experience is still really buggy with immersed. I have spend a few hours trying to set my office up and I experience a lot of the following: Hand tracking not always on, or working properly. Sometimes my hands are not detected despite them being on front of my face (only for this app). Sometimes hands appear but "partially" like I can see them but they are translucent and do not let me do gestures. If I am typing with my hands I want my hand tracking to work. When hand tracking does work, very easy to move screens and stuff by mistake. Some screens stuck/frozen or not working. Sometimes screen loading for waay too long after a display setting is changed - maybe to do with my laptop not being beast but should be good enough?. Screen layout not quite matching what I want for proper mouse flow across screens. Any others having issues? Really want this to work!

I kindly asked u/ggodin of virtual desktop if he needed me to sacrifice my firstborn to get this functionality in virtual desktop. He said he’d get the overlay when Oculus themselves does it with infinite office.
I keep my firstborn on standby.

Now you can use logitech k830 keyboard to pair with your quest 2 to type. I don't use windows or android for typing. Instead I am using only chromebooks and it is more complicated to use the virtual desktop for chromebook in quest 2. So, a stand alone keyboard will be good.

Wow! This is great! Even though I'm retired, I still do some consulting and use MS Office 365 all the time. So, I'm going to download Immersed VR as soon as I'm done typing this.
    Thanks for your great vids!

The only thing I don't like about this is that working in vr is going to be a strain on the workers eyes and head just so they're more productive and focused but they're not going to get a single cent more on their wages/salary to compensate. Its like what happened with computers but at least computers have strict health and safety regulations and for the most part people actually know how to work with them.
I can also bet that there are some employers that will disable all features like custom environments, phone notifications, music players etc and it's just going to be working in a 360 picture of a black and white grid with your desktop and keyboard. There's going to be statistics like "people who use the mountain lodge environment are less productive than those that work in the void" and it's gonna essentially be a way to squeeze as much efficiency out of you as possible by blocking off as much of your personal life as possible from work. Sorry if that's disappointing to hear but ultimately what it's going to be used for and Facebook are only happy about this because right now they have a chokehold on mobile vr.

Partial passthrough so we can see our desk if we look down would be better than overlay, then we can see our mouse, whatever crazy type of keyboard we may have. That would surely be minimal work for the devs and no need to handle the myriad of different types of keyboards and mice. Hell, just throw in full passthrough so we just have the extra screens like we can in oculus home. Some sort of automatic placement of the primary screen above the keyboard would really streamline setup. And please give us snapping. I don’t need to finely tune where my monitor is, it just goes to the left, right or above another monitor.

This is very useful!! Can't wait to get my VR headset so I can do this and use 5 monitors while doing school work. It's cool they added a keyboard overlay as well, I have a blank keyboard so it doesn't matter to me but still really nice if say, my mom, dad, or sister want to work in VR! this is gonna be so cool!!!!
I just hate that you have to pay a subscription of a crazy 15 dollars a month for the 5 monitors, they should just make it a one time purchase

instead of creating a virtual keyboard, they should consider creating a mask passthrough, so you can see your actual keyboard. I find 'shift' keys and 'enter' keys can be very different from one keyboard to another. arrow keys, etc. especially when you include laptop keyboards in the mix.

I have issues with the keyboard implementation, for one thing you need to have your keyboard on a solid desk, if your keyboard is on your lap once you get the virtual keyboard aligned then your real keyboard gets out of alignment. The next issue is that even if your keyboard is on a solid surface the alignment will still slide, just a little, so that your keys will be not quite in the right location, it's not the biggest issue but my brain has to do an extra step to move my fingers to the keys. The biggest issue is that the setup is clunky, you have to know where your keys are, pressing your P Q and B keys down all while your headset remains positioned so that the tracking remains accurate, I find if I have to lift the headset up to look at the keys to see where my P Q or B is then the cameras might lose the track and I'll have to do the thing again, this alignment process wouldn't be bad, except that I have to do it every time I have to take off the headset and put it back on, and every time the keyboard slips too far...
It would be ideal if there was a way to stick a tracker of some kind on the keyboard, it would be great if it could just remember where the keyboard was relative to the guardian boundry because that typically is smartly glued to the room, so a stationary keyboard would remain in alignment between uses of the headset.
Bonus points if there were multiple keyboard layouts to be able to account for keyboards that have numpads and arrow keys that are floating away from the qwerty levels.

is there any chance that the pricing model could be adjusted for regular home users who might be willing to pay a one off fee. Understand it is aimed at businesses at the moment but using the free version with only one monitor isn't worth using for me.

The Quest‘s hand tracking is way too limited to even detect the position of my desk-bound keyboard. You essentially have to put the keyboard right in front of your eyes and look at it all the time. Otherwise the hand tracking stops working. Props to Immersed for including hand tracking but it’s simply not good enough.
I am way more interested in innovative VR typing like the pinch gesture typing prototyped by FRL.

i don't want to pay so much money monthly for just having more screens which are fully virtual and don't even need any maintenance. I mean the features are great and all but I'll better have something I pay for once and with only the needed core features like multiple screen Support (as many as your gpu can handle) and the keyboard overlay. I wouldn't need any more tbh ^^

sounds good, but from the sounds of it, they don't support different layouts from different regions? like Nordic Keyboard layout, where some keys are placed differently etc., or do I have that wrong? As a developer, I work on several screens at once (2 -3 depending on location), and I use them all. The idea of sitting in a VR area like a space station lounge like you is very attractive. I just wonder if I would be able to work 7-8 hours without getting a neck crank or otherwise :). I just ordered my Oculus quest 2, so I haven't actually tried it yet, but for short intervals, for like a quick change it definitely sounds great.

Wish this had like a $5/month option for 3 screens or something. I will probably get the free version but I can't see spending $15 unless my company were to adopt this as a standard, which won't happen.
Agree with wishing virtual desktop would do this, but that's a one man operation and he probably has his hands full supporting new games. Then again, never underestimate Guy Godin 😉
    Great content as always!
