I Used Virtual Monitors For a Week!

  • In this video I try the Augmented Reality functionality of the VR headset Meta Quest Pro. The idea is to see if virtual monitors is something that can replace your physical desktop monitors. How functional is it right now? Do I see a potential future for this technology? Or, is it really just a gimmick to sell you a new device?

    Tip for future airplane usage: turn off 6dof tracking in settings to avoid the “stuff slides away” issue. Not sure if this breaks Workrooms, but it works great in Immersed and media apps

    So I want to thank you for watching this video! This is by far the video I’ve put the most amount of effort and money into ever! This was a really big project and took me a long time to complete. This is how I will approach all videos on this channel going forward. My focus will be to make the best videos I could possibly make, and this one is the start. I genuinely hope you enjoyed this video!

    I don't have the quest pro, but after working with virtual monitors on Quest 2 I have to say - the connectivity issue is most likely your laptop's wifi limitation and not the headset. Try a dedicated wifi6 router (one that won't thermo-throttle on the constant load). It kinda defeats the portability theme a bit, but that was the only way that worked for me.

    • @HopperNation
      @HopperNation 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes it has been demonstrated that most laptop wireless connectivity struggles with things like this, I agree that a wifi 6e antenna would fix or mostly mitigate the issue

    • @dbhrgdb3638
      @dbhrgdb3638 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not connectivity, it's a GPS tracking issue. I'll tell you, if you have a 5G connection there is no problem and things are @ 2K/4k with my PC. But GPS Tracking kills the experience.

I even go as far as to leave my laptop at home, on and connected to the internet, and bring only my headset, Bluetooth mouse & keyboard, to the office. Works extremely well.

      @kirbyclem4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Alternatywny_1 Having owned both I would highly suggest the Pro, I have not had any connectivity issues as mentioned in the video. 1st - the quality of image is much better on the Pro, allowing me to work exclusively from the headset for long periods of time, especially with having to read small text without having to zoom in. 2nd - The connection to my remote computer seems to be much stronger on the Pro, even when connecting via hotspot while away from my computer. My setup in office is my 17-inch laptop with the headset using the Immersed app ( with wifi direct turned on allowing me to remote directly to my computer for better connection). When traveling or away from the office I use the VSpatial app to remote access my laptop while using a Bluetooth mouse & keyboard. I almost always use both Immersed & VSpatial in pass-through mode so I can be aware/ interact with my surroundings. I purchased the headset when it was $1,499 & still think it has been an awesome investment.

    I’m so glad to have caught this video early. I think fair points were made. Keep in mind this headset will improve with each update. The Quest 2 is simply not the same headset it was when it was first released. Each update has brought new features, added stability, and even UI updates. We can expect the same for the Meta quest pro.
    I’d be interested in seeing a long term review after 6 months.

    • @no-nukez
      @no-nukez 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There’ll be improvements to software, but I don’t think the 6 month review will be much better.
      The hardware is simply not good enough. Screen resolution is not enough for a monitor replacement, the cameras are not good enough for AR, and while this use case doesn’t really require it, the battery life is too low. They can compensate some of this through optimization, but I think the Quest Pro just isn’t there yet. Maybe the quest Pro 2.

      @Leathal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boz is on record saying he wasn’t sure if they had enough spare CPU cycles to globally enable local dimming support - a literal keynote feature. The Pro is six pounds of sht in a five pound bag so don’t expect a Quest 2 style “glow up”

    Latency and refresh is a solved issue (see VirtualDesktop).
    I do wish that Workrooms or Immersed whatever app is on the quest pro would treat your focussed screen like VirtualDesktop and keep the others bandwidth-limited, allowing you to configure options for changing focus by looking (head tracking or eye tracking now) or mouse pointer.
    I also actually think the nReal Air might be better for this purpose long term. I've had a good time with the nebula landing page and Samsung Dex, I just wish I could do 3 Dex screens side by side inside nebula and then I'd be onboard.

    I am using Immersed + Quest 2 rn to watch & write this (been working "goggled in" for a while now). I do 3d sculpting, modeling etc as well as general browser based work.
    Tips: 1. if latency is an issue just use a usb cable. It's not too much of a hassle and I am getting 1ms response...it's truly unnoticeable. It also keeps your headset charged!
    2. As others have said, turn off headset tracking in settings > system > headset tracking to avoid the screens moving while on the tram/plane.

    Yo Kalle, you legitimately my hero. This year I’m gonna try my best to be like you by challenging myself more and creating value. Perhaps I might even start my own channel. Love from Namibia.

    I like how you mentioned you had little space in front of you. Almost like your imply to the guy in front to put his seat forward.

    Loved this review!!! You saved me a ton of money on trying these out. I would definitely like to carry around 3 screens with me in a pair of AR glassed, but the technology has to get better. Your video editing skills have become top-notch! Hope you publish more videos (on ANYTHING/any subject) in 2023. You weave a good yarn.

    they should probably place the cable port in the middle of the headset -- to make it less intrusive. the lag comes from the headset being wifi connected. and they need to add room on the sides of the head for glasses.

    Anyone else notice that at 5:10 the holographic screens he edited in don’t match the laptop? They are of an OSX/Apple device when he is actually using a Lenovo.

    For the connectivity issue, try using a thunderbolt cable to connect the headset and Mac. Also I’ve noticed that sharing internet from your Mac and using that networking on the oculus improves latency.
    Hope that helps!

    what you could do in unstable environments is to stop tracking, then it should (hypothetically) not change the view. I guess you can do that by getting the developer mode on.

    Thanks, Kalle for a great and unbiased video! I enjoyed every minute of it. ❤
    For me it’s also important to work with multiple monitors while on the go. One great remote work setup is the one by nomad setups 😁

    They can fix the plane/public transport problem with an airport/transport mode which keeps them stationed in one direction and only move with a stick movement.

    Hey @Hallden, excuse my ignorance, but how exactly are the virtual displays shown in the video created? like, do you use rendering software to make that?
    Clearly it's what (you) are seeing with the headset on, but how are you showing the audience of this video? I am just beginning to learn about coding, editing etc. and this fascinates me!
