  • While the clubheads get the most attention, golf shafts are just as important in a golf club fitting. One of the most popular brands for golf shafts is Project X, which offers a variety of different golf shafts, especially for irons.
    In this video, 2nd Swing's Thomas Campbell and Drew Mahowald conduct a head-to-head test using Trackman technology to compare the Project X steel iron shaft offerings available in 2nd Swing Tour Van golf iron fittings.

    You guys have been knocking it out of the park lately with not only the quality of your videos but the content too! Keep em coming! 👍 I was really interested in this one because back in 2019 I got fit into the MP18-SC and a shaft that wasn’t even close to being on my radar…PX6.5. I swing 6 iron around 90 mph, have a fairly aggressive transition, 4*-5* down with a fairly neutral path and my miss is left as a righty...over draw or a pull. I was 50 and had just gotten back into golf after an almost 10 year hiatus. I had been a DGX100 guy and went into my fit figuring I was going to be in a 120g S shaft. I tried Modus 120 S & X, DG120 S & X, CTaper 120S, KBS Tour 120 S, and PX6.0. Everything wanted to go left. My fitter then said “let’s try this just for fun” and handed me a PX6.5. I looked at him as if to say “no way!” It took me 3 swings to realize that was the shaft for me. For me it was a dispersion killer with tight baby draws and the occasional small push. Just goes to show that everyone’s swing reacts differently to shaft flex, weight, or the combination of both. For me it’s all about weight and how it affects my timing. I’ve since soft stepped them to add a little more feel (real or perceived). Since soft stepping them I feel like I don’t have to go after it on every swing just because the shaft label has PX6.5 on it.

      Thanks for watching and your detailed fitting experience. Sounds like your fitter did a great job. PX 6.5 is sturdy but weighs a little less that X100 which sounds like might be a good mix of weight and stiffness. - Thomas

    I thought you guys were using Project X LZ 6.0 shafts for some reason. I got rid of my Ping i230s and returned to the Ping i210s, which felt much more solid. I was using NS Pro 120s and just bought a set of Ping i210s with the Project X LZ 6.5 shafts. No one was buying these clubs because of the 'scary' 6.5 shafts. You guys were right... I probably added 8+ yards, and the clubs feel great. I will be 59 in a couple of months and I can see using these clubs for at least another 5 years. I must have watched hundreds of your videos over the past year. Great job!!!!

    Nice informative video. You two do a great job of presenting relevant information. This was a really good comparison of the Project X line of shafts. Your video seems to explain why my Project X 5.5 shafted irons almost always favor left of target and my LZ 5.5 shafts are more consitantly closer to the target line.

    It's crazy, I went and got fitted for some new irons and I had been playing 115g Nippon that were super stiff and I ended up up leaving with the Project X IO 6.0 at 110g. I literally could not make it go left or right for that matter and I picked up 2 MPH. This should not have been the shaft for me, but here we are lol.

    Thank you Thomas, I had the same experience during fitting, except IO I tend to miss right, didn't try the LS, PX was too stiff for me and tend to pull my shots

    The LS is a frickin' rod. I miss the LS left also because I'm trying my best to load it, so I use my hands more and pull it left. I'm working too hard with it. I play X100 and the LS is an entirely different type of stiff.

    Several years ago I got fitted into the original Rifle shafts at Titleist teamed with AP2's and although my numbers were good I hated the lack of "feel" from the shaft, it always felt "dead" in my hands and it never felt as though I had "loaded" the shaft properly.
    So as soon as I could I swapped out the Rifles and replaced them with Nippon NS Pros which gave me a much better feel. As a result, I have given Project X shafts a wide berth!

    I have the project x LZ 105s in my callaway Apex16. I hit a draw. Bought the srixon ZX5 with nippon 105g stiff. I draw or hit them right. Not sure if either shaft is right? 7 iron club head speed105 mph. Not sure if i need a lighter or heavier shaft to straighten the ball out a little. I have a slower back swing and swing smooth thru the ball. The guy who fitted me. Couldn't find a shaft that i could hit straighter. We went 2 * flat. I drew the ball. 3* upright drew the ball. I have seen a video that you guy's did on that problem..Did he try heavier shafts? i dont know? He wouldnt let me see. I use to hit s300 staright. Just lower. 5 AND 6 irons came up short. I did have my left hip,left knee, and right ankle replaced. I just wish that i could get back to enjoying the game. I get frustrated when i aim right and hit it straight and miss the green right. no draw. Then i move to the left. Then it draws left of the green. I cant keep scrambling to score. I was a 6. now i cant break 80 hell 85 now.

    Great Iron shaft video. Thanks guys
    I am currently playing around with all the Project X, LZ, LS, C-taper, TGI shafts. The LS definitely requires more work(feels heavier) and launches lower but that has been my favorite feel getting the club head through the dirt. That being said I had to double soft step them to get the launch window I wanted in my longer irons. I am going to be trying the io in the longer irons to see how that compares

    The very stiff tip and butt with mid flex was a winning formula for Gerry Hogan"s Nunchuk design.
    Not surprising that others are jumping on this since Mr Hogans patent expired.
    "I came into this review with very low expectations for the feel of Project X graphite. I will happily report that I was wrong to expect so little. To me, the Project X feels most similar to the Nunchuk: a solid, “one-piece” feel with very little kick or torque."

    I have a quicker transition and aggressive swing too. No Ernie Els here. I like the smooth feel of a Modus 120 S, but I feel the middle of the shaft bowing on me. Thinking about trying the X flex and maybe soft stepping it. 1. How do you think the Project X LZ & IO compare to Modus 120? 2. Thoughts on the Modus 125? KBS C Taper? What are your top picks for a quick transition and aggressive swing?
    I also tend to come over the top unfortunately. Thanks, Joe.

      I like the C-Taper as a favorite for a quicker transition. I play the LZ and I have a quicker transition but I like the feel in the midsection. Modus 120 or IO might be a little light/soft. I would say top 3 to try are C-Taper, LZ and Modus 125 in that order. - Thomas

      Difference is IO is going to be lighter and in the longer irons easier to get the ball in the air. LZ is just a constant shaft the has a softer midsection feel but heavier. Similar swing speed to me. If you hit long irons well LZ is probably a winner but if you struggle with long irons (which I doubt based on a LZ 6.0 success in a 2iron) try IO. - Thomas

    What Project X shaft is comparable to $-taper 120?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! Due to the elongated step-pattern in the $-taper shafts, the $-taper does tend to play a little stiffer than the KBS Tour. The $-Taper also has a tendency to be a little more friendly on lowering a spin rate for a player. With that being said, I would say the Project X 6.0 Rifle (stepless shaft), would be the closest comparison to the KBS $-Taper 120. Also helps that they're equivalent weight at 120grams. -Danny

    So I used to play project x. The 6.0 was a bit too loose, but the 6.5 was a bit too stiff. Do you think the 6.5 LZ may be a good fit?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perfect fit in the middle. I was in similar circumstances. Played X100, (too stiff) played C-Taper Lite 115X (too flexible) LZ 125g was perfectly in the middle with a slightly softer mid section - Thomas

      Try a 6.0 X LZ, the X LZ plays 0.5 "Stiffer" than the X.
      (Don't believe me, try to find a 7.0 X LZ.)

    Attack angle on a 7 iron -1.0?? 🤔

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least it's not positive today :) One of my flaws is my attack angle is very shallow, probably from hitting off mats too often. That is why the spin is on the lower side in testing. - Thomas

    I have the KBS Max 85 Steel, and am considering purchasing the Project X Rifle 5.5. Do you think the Project X 5.5 would be comparable to my current KBS’s or would they be a bit more stiff?
    Thanks.

    Hey. I watch your TH-cam channel regularly .
    I’m a gear junkie. I’m going to getting a new set of clubs next season. I’m currently gaming srixon 585/785 irons. I’m a picker/sweeper so I don’t love the soles anymore. If I bought them again I would have gotten more 785’s then 585. Looking for a great feeling tweener iron. I’m looking for great looks, feel, and turf interaction, and not much offset. I want forgiveness. I don’t want to make the game any harder. 8 handicap. I hit the ball decent just care about stability and then secondly working the ball. I do like to shape shots but care more about stability.
    Any irons come to mind? I have seen the photos of the new mizuno, ping, and some others irons for 2021. I currently have jacked lofts but I am open. I Figured I would ask and see what you thought? Thanks in advance for your time.

      The new t200 from titleist would probably be an iron that fits many of the points you are looking for. Little to no offset, small compact headshape but also packs a fair bit of tech and forgiveness inside. Soft feel with some forgiveness as well as the ability to shape shots.

      @@olivegarden2670 thanks for the response. I love the look of the t200. Probably the nicest looking iron for me over the ball. I didn’t love the feel and sound. I am willing to try again. But as random as it sounds the few times I have to hit it out of a weird shot left handed, I’m not sure the back of the club would hold up.
      I really do appreciate you taking time to respond

    How does the modus 130 compare to the lz?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The most obvious answer would be weight Modus 130 actually is 129g in x-stiff and stiff is 124g LZ 6.5 125g and 6.0 is 120g. So slightly heavier with Modus 130. Midsection is a little softer with LZ and is more of a lower launch than Modus 130. Modus 130 is unique as a heavier shaft that can provide higher trajectories compared to shafts in it's weight class. - Thomas

      @@2ndswing thanks for the response. What about spin? Specifically in lz 6.0 vs s flex 130. I currently play lz 6.0 but could use a bit more height and spin. Club speed is decent with driver at 105 mph and I make a fairly aggressive move at the ball but I struggle with low spin for some reason.

    • @CraigalFun

      @mike maupin modus 105 x will give you more height and spin.
      But is a trade off for weight which imo affects your tempo/takeaway

    Shafts are just as important has the Club Head itself. Get the wrong Shaft and you will lose distance and accuracy.
