  • Senior Director of Alloy Engineering for True Temper/Project X, Scott Cokeing, talks with Keenan Phillips about the new Project X IO (Individually Optimized) shaft.
The new Project X IO was born from the concept that not all golfers need the same thing from a shaft. While the stronger players require launch and spin reduction to control their ball, many golfers need more launch and spin to help maximize their distances.
Project X IO takes the DNA of the popular PXi shaft and evolves it by having each shaft flex designed with a specific weight and trajectory progression in mind. As Project X IO increases in flex, it gets 5g heavier and is geometrically modified to launch lower-providing an individually optimized shaft for each flex. Project X IO is ideal for players who love the stability of Project X but need an easier to load shaft profile and are looking for a lighter weight option. IO also features a unique brushed chrome finish that reduces glare and gives Project X IO a distinct look.

I swing a 7i at 88-90 mph and have ping i230, these things were an instant match in the 6.0 weight (never go on flex!). While swing speed maye have a part to play, it's probably 20%. I came from kbs tour 120-S and they , for ME, weren't even close to the IO in dispersion or feel. These shafts are awesome.

seriously I had the exact experience and came from the kbs s. Way better shaft for me. 116 driver swing speed

There needs to be more explanation regarding what needed to be changed from the Project X "I" shaft and the newer Project X IO shaft. Also, I'm, playing Mizuno JPX 2019 Pro irons with the LZ 5.5 and was wondering why Mizuno selected this shaft over the IO shaft in this head whereas the JPX 921 Forged irons uses a Project X IO 5.5 as a standard shaft. Can you compare/ explain the difference between the IO shaft and the LZ when compared in the 5.5 designation.

Please bring this shaft out with the matte black finish available on the LZ line.

Love my 6.0 IO coming from 5.5 LZ Blackout HS1x. They are really smooth and consistent. Very nice brushed finish adds that high end look as well. Thanks TT/PX gents!

I'm currently playing i500 irons with proj x lz 6.0 120g. I recently turned 70 and have lost some club speed from 4 yrs ago when I got the i500's. I'm looking at i525's also, would the IO 5.5 105g be a good selection for me?

How is this different than the PXi when the PXi 5.5 was 108 grams, 6.0 - 112g, 6.5 - 117g. What are the technical differences?

how does the shaft deliver different launches? When it says higher flight, is it increasing dynamic loft at impact? And vice versa for lower flight?

Had custom fit with PXG. Data on launch monitor suggested 10yrds more distance and better dispersion as opposed to my current golf iron. Following delivery of the new irons, very disappointing just cannot play golf with them they feel clunky and distance wise iam a club shorther. PXG have offered a spec check. Shafts are project x IO 60/110. Swing speed 75mph. I feel the shafts maybe too stiff.

All of our steel shafts are made in our Amory, MS steel plant in the USA.

So this is a shaft for a slower (70-80) swing speed
